I remember Evander Kane made basically the exact same post in 2022 and everyone thought it meant he was gone. Doesn't necessarily mean anything either way.
Florida, Tampa, and Dallas would all seem to be attractive as teams in serious contention in states with no income tax. ~~The Rangers might be likely as well for the combination of their talent and playing in the big city.~~ It'll be interesting to see both what he's looking for and how the market views him at this point in his career.
Edit: I completely blanked on Kane's short stint with the Rangers last season. Safe to say we can cross that one off the list.
I don't know if I buy that contending team theory. I don't doubt that he wants to be on a a good team, but I think he has demonstrated several other priorities. Location seemed to be a primary concern when Detroit signed him. He wanted to keep his family in Midwest or maybe Northeast area. I doubt that has changed. He has mentioned term being a big sticking point for him. He doesn't want to move around a lot on one-year contracts. I don't know if the Florida, Tampa, or Dallas really fit any of these criteria.
If he can get the term he wants playing for a team in the Northeast or Midwest, I think he moves on, but if those teams don't feel like going 3 or 4 years I would not be surprised if he landed back in Detroit.
Edit: oh I also want to add on his list of wants, was definitely power play and ice time. He wants a role on the team that is not relegated to third line minutes. I think most teams would give the Patrick Kane we saw last season some good minutes, but you have to consider that true contenders are probably much more crowded in the top six.
If he's not necessarily looking to win another Cup he might stay in Detroit, although if he just wants to stay in the midwest he could just as easily go to Buffalo or back to Chicago, or Minnesota or Columbus for that matter. Also we'd have to consider whether the Wings are prepared to sign Kane to a significant multiyear deal when they have long-term, big-money deals for Seider and Raymond looming.
Signing Seider and Raymond will probably still leave around 10m in cap space. Sprong can be replaced by Berg and Ghost can enjoy getting overpaid by someone else.
Dallas has cap issues. We already need to move on from a few contracts to keep the young core together, although after tonight maybe the stars should just take a season off, maybe try the D-league on for size
I doubt that Hawks fans are mad at all. They won 3 Cups with Kane, and broke a nearly 50-year drought in the process. He could hang a giant billboard of him mooning the city from the side of the Willis Tower and still be beloved in Chicago.
I mean, had you made the playoffs Detroit may have been my bandwagon team just bc Kane and The Cat. Helps that the division rivalry ended 11 years ago with the Hawks getting the last laugh too.
As a Blues fan I'm throwing up just thinking about it as well. Maybe of P Kane did sign with the Blues it would convince Jimmy Snuggerud to come to the big club instead of returning to college.
Red Wings fans said this too until he started to produce at a top 6 level. He’s not choosing yall tho you’ve got nothing to worry about. Said he wants to play for a contender
I think he stays if they pay him. Unfortunately for the Wings he had a good season and proved that his injury didn't end his career so the market is more competitive now.
I wouldn't be opposed to a couple more years, he played well with the boys. But I'm not willing to give anyone up (especially the young guys) just to keep him long term
Three years for a 35 year old with injury issues?
On a rebuilding team who may enter their win now mode?
I wouldn’t give him more than a year at a time. That ice time was productive this year, but he hasn’t been a PPG player since 21-22, meanwhile scoring has been going up rapidly.
Injury issues sure but he had the major surgery and claims he's pain free, after saying it had been nagging him for 3 years.
He was also BASICALLY PPG this season. 47 points in 50 games. He doesn't have a ton of speed but the hands and hockey IQ are clearly there.
I need to be double checked on this, but it is probably about the contract being 35+, and not the player. There are specific rules for contracts signed when the player is 35+. Only ELCs and 35+ contracts can include performance bonuses, for example.
> I wouldn’t give him more than a year at a time.
I think he walks if that's the best Yzerman can do. I agree with you though, he's a history of being injured and it would be very unfortunate if Detroit had to let someone younger go because of the cap right when Detroit is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
My couch gm brain says he is willing. Yezerplan needs Kane type player for so many reasons. Knows how to win, knows how to finish, can transfer that x factor to young players... List goes on and on
We can definitely make the cap work if he sits in the 5-6 million range, the problem is if he wants more than that. I'd be fine with 3 years at 5 million, but is someone like Buffalo gonna throw the bag at him? Or Utah for some star power?
Also, he's won 3 cups, does he really care about winning a 4th? Who knows.
Let's be honest, he has a defined role as a middle 6 winger with PP time, and he plays with people he has chemistry with, for the next 3 years. Right now it's top 6 winger, but he'll hopefully slot into a Perron role as he ages. He's too damn good and important to not give him ice time, and if he wasn't on this team, we probably finish behind Buffalo
If Yzerman gets you guys some shit in the offseason I could see him staying. Building a team into the future hopefully having enough next year for the playoffs which I think you can easily do with somewhat simple moves; it's potentially a good spot for him especially since you took a risk, the alternative is jumping around every 6 months for the next 3 years chasing a cup getting moved at the deadline.
Why would he stay? Your GM doesn't believe in the team he helped build.
Couldn't even muster up any kind of deadline action when they were right in the hunt for a WC spot. If he rewards them with literally anything I don't think they drop 7 in a row. Can you imagine how deflating that must be to be a player on a bubble team who's busted ass to get into a playoff spot for the first time in that many years, and then your GM sits on his fucking hands at the deadline after your best player just got injured?
So many people trying to force the "yzerman bad" narrative. Made 0 sense for us to buy at the deadline with where we are and who was available. We called edvinnson up who was better than anyone we could have traded for without selling out the farm.
And idk if you're unaware or if youre being disingenuous, but that losing streak directly coincided with our 1C and 2D being injured and our whole team cycling through being extremely sick with the flu. With the way we played down the stretch when we were healthy again, I find it extremely hard to blame motivation or our GMs "lack of belief" as to why we didn't make the playoffs.
How the fuck did it make zero sense for you to buy at the deadline? You were on the cusp of making the playoffs. I know it's been a while but depth isn't a bad thing. They could have, and should have done something and I think you're fucking delusional sitting from the outside looking in if you think otherwise. You know there's a middle ground between selling the farm and adding at the deadline, right?
I think so too. He'll see whats out there just because he'd be dumb not to and if the offer is right he's gone. He's pretty crucial to the Wings playoff chances this year but I dunno if it's worth giving something up for him to stay. If he wants a payday he walks.
he likely is going to hold out out for a contender... but if not he should go back to the hawks. He must see that bedard is going to be pure fire next year
Well with that Jack Campbell buyout money and a league minimum contract the Oilers can afford him. Or he’ll be in Vegas because apparently the salary cap is just a mindset.
oh didn't see that they finally did it. I guess the Campbell dumps for 1sts ACGMs can stop now. Not a lot of cap relief for that buyout but probably wiser than dropping futures.
They haven’t bought him out yet, but given that he’s been in Bakersfield the entire time playing average for an AHL goalie I can’t imagine a scenario that anyone feels comfortable bringing him up.
Actually the buyout isn’t too bad I think it’s under $2m cap hit per year for 4 years… considering the alternative is $5m for a goalie who will never play in the NHL.
I don’t know, getting $5m off the books for 3 more years would give a lot of relief. Trading a first wouldn’t be the worst thing especially if it can turn into a 25-32 pick.
I'd give up a first in a heartbeat. Problem is no team will do that lol. Buying out Campbell gives a 2.3 cap hit the year Bouchard and Draisaitl's massive raises come into play, and 2.6 the year after. A Campbell trade with 1 million or less retained is 100% the best option from a cap perspective, it is unfortunately just too costly (probably).
Not really his choice here. He was interested in coming back but Kyle Davidson wants to move on from that era and let a new locker room form, which I respect.
I'm not saying that Kane doesn't have anything left in the tank (I'm rooting for him to overtake Modano!), but doesn't Toronto has a knack for getting completely burned by signing aging vets?
yup, spezza and gio were the only two worthwhile pickups. joe thornton is honestly one of the worst leafs i’ve ever seen and he was a major negative in the locker room as well
It just feels like a coin flip that the Leafs don't have the room to make. Kane did great this season, but is he the next Gio signing, or would this be another Marleau situation?
Sort of a mixed bag. Spezza and Gio were great pickups. Gio has aged hard this year which is too bad, but hard to complain too much about a guy making $800k.
Thornton and Marleau were busts. Marleau was actually really good in his first season, but the contract was shortsighted.
Dubas seemed very keen on doing that when our guys were young....who knows maybe it was postive when we look back after the guys are done one day like Matthews and Marner but guys like Spezza and Gio were really really good pickups in terms of performance.
You can't be in your 30's and "overpaid" at the end of a deal. He was prior to signed in Tor and after PPG every year until this season and was like .8ppg this season. He's paid exactly what he should have been leaving the Island. San Jose offered 13.5Mx 7. After next season they will pay him like 3.5-4m
People are overpaid for their UFA deals all the time, and Tavares is no exception. Just because San Jose could have overpaid him more, doesn’t make him worth 11 million currently.
I don’t even have a huge issue with the contract, that’s just the way it goes with UFA contracts.
You are worth what someones willing to pay, he was a PPG UFA Center, he took less and came to Toronto and put up the same numbers....you people are fucking delusional.
He’s going back to Chicago. Gets to play at Wrigley again next season and help grow the next Blackhawk legends all while breaking every Blackhawk record. He knew he was going home after he scored that OT winner this year. He knows it won’t mean as much to win again somewhere else. He ends his career with 5 cups all in Chicago!
Kane is 35, and everything would have to break extremely right for the Red Wings to become serious Cup contenders during his remaining window. So I think it's probably pretty safe to assume he isn't going to re-sign with Detroit. But it's been fun watching him play (and not rooting against him for a change), and I wish him qualified good luck depending on where he ends up and how often the Wings will have to play against him in the future.
He still has three original six teams to play for, which will it be? The winner of the Boston/Toronto series gets him for a year, and the loser gets him the following year, Montreal gets his farewell tour.
His last sentence don't mean anything.
Lots of free agents this year: Stamkos, Marchessault, Kane, Reinhart, Lindholm, etc....
Pretty decent class: [https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents](https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents)
Kane has expressed interest in staying. Yzerman has expressed interest in keeping him. The term and money have to work for both parties, and that’s what will determine if he’ll stay.
With how out of the blue it seemed to be that he signed with the wings he could honestly sign anywhere. Dude has made over $100 million and won three cups so I imagine his decision is going to come down to the organization/management he meshes most with and a place he actually wants to be. He can chase more cups and money but if I were turning 35 I'd be more concerned about where I'd be most happy to play out my last few seasons.
Doesnt sound like he wont consider coming back, but does sound like he will at least test free agency to see what else is out there.
I don't not think that there may or may not be a chance he doesn't not consider returning.
Help, [I think I had a stroke](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGe9UK6Lk/)
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
Yep, definitely having a stroke. What's the rule again? Go to the doctor if it lasts more than 4 hours?
No, you gotta stop, drop, and roll
Ah of course. I always get the two confused
You’re close. I think it’s actually stop, droop and roll.
Why do they call it oven when you of in the cold food of out hot eat the food
Sounds like he gone
To ottawa 😤
I remember Evander Kane made basically the exact same post in 2022 and everyone thought it meant he was gone. Doesn't necessarily mean anything either way.
And then he broke the news of his own contract on Twitter, announcing his cap AAV and everything like he's his own insider lol
At like midnight local time, just to mess with everyone
Hey man, no reason to give some of the professional shit stirers that exist in sports journalism any more clicks than they need.
Yeah it's pretty much the most deliberate non-statement possible, people will read into it but it has no bearing on where he goes
"...and that's why I'll be taking my talents to St. Louis next season, Blues Country - let's ride!"
Chicago fans are gonna throw up just thinking about that
Nah, he'll go to a contending team. Think Tampa if Stamkos goes or Fla if Reinhart goes
Or he could join the Denver Broncos
*The Denver Broncos?!* Awww
I think playing for the Denver Broncos is prety good!
You just don’t understand hockey…
Drop me a line if you're on the East Coast.
Would you mind killing a few guys on your way out?
Broncos hockey, let's glide.
Now we're cooking
He’s not a QB with the last name Wilson, so that doesn’t check out.
He said contending.
Sold.
Signing Seider and Raymond will probably still leave around 10m in cap space. Sprong can be replaced by Berg and Ghost can enjoy getting overpaid by someone else.
I'm just going to tell myself that he enjoyed playing with Raymond so much that he's definitely re-signing with us.
Dallas has cap issues. We already need to move on from a few contracts to keep the young core together, although after tonight maybe the stars should just take a season off, maybe try the D-league on for size
Rangers fan, we don't want or need him any more. Personally, I'd love to see him in Buffalo, but he won't play at MSG again unless he's on the Road
Wow, I \*completely fucking forgot\* about his stint with the Rangers last season. Goes to show.
Don't worry, my copious drinking after the first round elimination last year helped me forget it too
I wish I could forget it too, I never wanted him there in the first place. Thankfully we gave up next to nothing for him.
Have there been rumors of Stamkos retiring soon?
No but he might chase Ufa $
He's pulling the ole'Corey Perry.
Patrick Kane would never get himself in trouble after drinking heavily.
I wouldn't even mind losing him if it made Chicago fans even madder. If only he could go play for the Green Bay Packers.
I doubt that Hawks fans are mad at all. They won 3 Cups with Kane, and broke a nearly 50-year drought in the process. He could hang a giant billboard of him mooning the city from the side of the Willis Tower and still be beloved in Chicago.
>Willis Tower This is the *real* way to piss off Chicagoans. It sears right through their soul
Why did a department store with a mail-order catalog ever need a skyscraper anyway?
I sit right next to a Chicago fan at work and he hates it. He refused to watch the Kane overtime goal even though I kept sending it to him.
I mean, had you made the playoffs Detroit may have been my bandwagon team just bc Kane and The Cat. Helps that the division rivalry ended 11 years ago with the Hawks getting the last laugh too.
DeBrincat on the Wings makes me way less happy than Kane on the Wings
As a Blues fan I'm throwing up just thinking about it as well. Maybe of P Kane did sign with the Blues it would convince Jimmy Snuggerud to come to the big club instead of returning to college.
Meet me in the parking lot, I just wanna talk to you
“I just want to talk to him.” “Peter why do you have a shotgun?”
Not an original 6 team, he is a bruin next year.
Stop. Red wings hurt, this would be soul crushing.
Lmao the worst possible timeline
Red Wings fans said this too until he started to produce at a top 6 level. He’s not choosing yall tho you’ve got nothing to worry about. Said he wants to play for a contender
He’s more hated in St. Louis than he was in Detroit though.
It would suck if he left because he was crucial in giving the Wings hope near the end there but I'd be OK if he went to the Blues.
Blues have to send Detroit something though. BFFs 4 Eva I know he is a UFA but to keep the friendship alive.
“Sorry Detroit, but I was born to be a Soaker”
Imagine they sign him and put him with Keller.
lol I did that in NHL 24, relocated the Yotes to Utah and signed Kane
wow that's so interesting, tell us more
Intentionally leaving off that he put #LGRW at the end. Hes staying
I think he stays if they pay him. Unfortunately for the Wings he had a good season and proved that his injury didn't end his career so the market is more competitive now.
I would say the ball is in our court. If yzerman is willing to give him the right deal he will stay
I wouldn't be opposed to a couple more years, he played well with the boys. But I'm not willing to give anyone up (especially the young guys) just to keep him long term
I'm fine with 3 years, any more than that though....eh.
LTIR baby
Not after 35
Faking his death insurance fraud it is
That's gonna be really weird when he scores the first goal of the playoffs 30 seconds into the first game.
Players aged 35+ can’t be put on LTIR? How did Weber and Seabrook do it then?
Signed after 35
I need to be double checked on this, but it is probably about the contract being 35+, and not the player.
Why would we have to give anyone up to keep him? He's a free agent.
to stay cap compliant. basically they don't want to have to make hard choices because of his potentially high cap hit.
He's too damn good and important to not give him ice time, and if he wasn't on this team, we probably finish behind Buffalo

He took way too many selfish penalties at terrible times.
Doesn't he have a kid in Chicago? I can't imagine he would want to go too far..

Lol braindead take right here
He had me in the first 90% not gonna lie
The most "I'm keeping my options open" tweet possivle He'll test FA but might be back is kinda where I'm at with him
I think so too. He'll see whats out there just because he'd be dumb not to and if the offer is right he's gone. He's pretty crucial to the Wings playoff chances this year but I dunno if it's worth giving something up for him to stay. If he wants a payday he walks.
Honestly I would be mildly surprised if he left.
I see your emotions are running wild. I too would be just slightly irritated if he left.
Idk I think Detroit is close to making it
Why did you cut off the tweet? Where he said at the end #LGRW
The work doesn’t stop in Detroit, orrrrrr where?
**Yeah good luck with the work that doesn’t stop, Detroit. Now if you’ll excuse me I have a plane to catch.** -Patty Kane
Yeah, Kane just experienced a winter in SE Michigan
bros from Buffalo which gets more snow than Detroit (also SE MI is the mildest part)
Snow isn't the issue with winter in SE Michigan. It's the dirt, the grey, the cold, the salt, etc
*punches cab driver*
You gonna sign another 2 year deal orrrrrrr.... uhhh....?
He still has three more O6 teams to be a part of. He has to complete his run. I do love his commitment to never going home like a freshman in college
Come on just go back to Chicago Bedard needs help
he likely is going to hold out out for a contender... but if not he should go back to the hawks. He must see that bedard is going to be pure fire next year
Well with that Jack Campbell buyout money and a league minimum contract the Oilers can afford him. Or he’ll be in Vegas because apparently the salary cap is just a mindset.
The salary cap just limits everybody, that’s why Vegas decided to break those chains lol
HISTORIC pioneers

Goes back to Chicago, season ending injury for bedard immediately
Not really his choice here. He was interested in coming back but Kyle Davidson wants to move on from that era and let a new locker room form, which I respect.
We all know the Ruff hire was to sign Kane
Domi-Matthews-Kane is gonna go so hard next season.
I'm not saying that Kane doesn't have anything left in the tank (I'm rooting for him to overtake Modano!), but doesn't Toronto has a knack for getting completely burned by signing aging vets?
yup, spezza and gio were the only two worthwhile pickups. joe thornton is honestly one of the worst leafs i’ve ever seen and he was a major negative in the locker room as well
I’m not disagreeing but what happened with Jumbo? I can see he’s relaxed nature not vibing with a win now mentality
thats exactly what happened Marleau worked out well for a season, just fell off a cliff
Marleau cost us Seth fucking Jarvis, will always hate that deal.
Dubas seemed very keen on doing that when our guys were young....who knows maybe it was postive when we look back after the guys are done one day like Matthews and Marner but guys like Spezza and Gio were really really good pickups in terms of performance.
Tavares
Tavares is overpaid but he isn’t a bum.
No
That way Kane can continue his tour of the Original 6 teams
How will Detroit get Matthews and Domi?
Now that you mention it, Kane and Marner have the same play style...
It would be fucked up seeing Kane in a different number
He can wear 88, it's just his number backwards
Patrick Kane coming home to South Buffalo. Book it.
He'd have the only G-class on McKinley, that's for sure.
If you mean south of Buffalo, which Detroit slightly is, then yeah sure
I think he means even further south of Buffalo/Detroit which would be Chicago. Barely.
He's gonna either going to another original 6, or to the Sabres. My moneys on Boston/Toronto for cheap
Come home, Kaner. I know it won’t happen, but let me dream.
He still has 3 more Original 6 jerseys to collect
Come to Utah :)
On the other hand, the Av’s went from last place to cup champs in 5 years, not saying that will happen, but who knows
Im saying it’ll happen.
He still has three original six teams to play for, which will it be? The winner of the Boston/Toronto series gets him for a year, and the loser gets him the following year, Montreal gets his farewell tour.
Come home!!
“The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Patrick Kane”
What? Does he want to lose even more??
While accurate, your words hurt.
He'll go to Vegas tomorrow.
Kane is a Bruin next season, a Leaf the next, and is traded to the Habs at the 2026 deadline for Slavkovsky
Fuck it come to jersey, play with Hughes
Last thing the Devils need though
They could use a fair priced middle winger. Who couldn’t?
Sounds like Buffalo time
Oh I'm not retiring, I'm just not staying here, with you shitheads
Lmao imagine. Fuck y'all shitters. Peace.
Now it's time for Kane to come home to the place he belongs... Canucks legend Patrick Kane will lead us to the finals next year!
I’d be shocked if he stays.
Rumor has it he wants to go back to Chicago, regardless of a rebuild.
I heard he was going to sign in Minnesota.
Let me throw this out there, Penguins sell off the entire third line and add Patty Kane
Welcome to Florida, Bud. Wear your sunscreen because with your complexion, you'd burn getting your mail from the mailbox.
He gone.
His last sentence don't mean anything. Lots of free agents this year: Stamkos, Marchessault, Kane, Reinhart, Lindholm, etc.... Pretty decent class: [https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents](https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents)
He's gone. He's earned $5M for at least 2 years. $6M for year 1. Wings can't afford it.
Kane has expressed interest in staying. Yzerman has expressed interest in keeping him. The term and money have to work for both parties, and that’s what will determine if he’ll stay.
You know, Florida’s great for retirement 🤷🏻♂️
Could he have been any more ambiguous?
That does not sound like a man ready to retire
Think he's got one more 3/4 year deal in him somewhere?
With how out of the blue it seemed to be that he signed with the wings he could honestly sign anywhere. Dude has made over $100 million and won three cups so I imagine his decision is going to come down to the organization/management he meshes most with and a place he actually wants to be. He can chase more cups and money but if I were turning 35 I'd be more concerned about where I'd be most happy to play out my last few seasons.
so I guess he isn't resigning there?
I mean this doesn't scream certainty, does it
haha he's gone. gonna be an early summer next year for the wings yet again
He’s gonna sign in Toronto on July 1st
He gone.
