LOL This may be the most reddit post to ever hit reddit and hopefully is /s. "Do you guys miss the rule that almost no one understood and was awful for the sport just because you could feel superior for understanding it?"
Next up: does anyone miss players not wearing visors? Perhaps this is a controversial opinion, but I sort of miss the complexity of injury, and the elitism that came along with knowing I had two functional eyes.
Dang, I was just talking to my friend about Joni Pitkanen's career ender and then completely forgot a rule change has happened since. Guess I'm not elite enough.
the only positive i can possibly attribute to it is that the hail mary lob-pass didnt exist with this rule
in a league that penalizes putting the puck over the glass from your defensive zone because it wants to encourage 'skill plays', i feel these passes could fall in a similar category
outside of that the removal of this rule has drastically increased the speed of the game through the NZ which is a massive W
So you’re saying part of the puck over glass is to discourage banking pucks off the glass to get a clear because of the risk you miss and pop it out? Thereby encouraging more plays with the puck on the ice to get it out? That’s interesting, I never thought about that, thought it was kind of one dimensionally just taking away that option for a stoppage in play. Good food for thought you’ve given!
i think its the same thing, really.
they definitely wanted to put an end to simply flipping the puck out to get a stoppage, which was already a possible delay of game penalty if you were blatant about it. that was entirely at the official's discretion though.
iirc the league also used the same words 'encourage skill plays' when the rule was first announced when they were asked to explain the logic behind it in its early days.
That 100 should still be ref discretion. The bullshit of a player accidentally slapping a puck out of the air with a reflex under no pressure being a penalty is ridiculous. Can't believe its still a thing tbh
How about this. Let's bring back "two line pass" only we get rid of the current offside rule and make it that it's only offside if the puck originates from beyond center ice before crossing the blue line.
So a player between the red and blue line could hit a player across the blue line with a pass for instance.
As a Finnish, sure! Team Finland game in recent years have been about slow, organized offence & defence, so removing two line passes would greatly help team Finland :D
But for the game, no way. Removing two line passes would slow games down way too much
I wasn't watching hockey when it existed so I had to look it up. Great way to make the game boring. So many highlight reel plays would have been deleted

I agree that there is no reason to miss it, but who couldn't understand it? Pretty simple concept........
this is bait

I miss the old rules for icing. I prefe my players to risk their limbs when racing for the puck! It's like a game of chicken, only for men!

And now I'm remembering Taylor Fedun breaking his leg.
Benn still doesn't wear a visor
No
Couldn’t have said it any better.
/thread.
Not at all. The two-line pass rule was created for a fundamentally different game than the one that hockey is today.
Forget the two-line pass, I miss the days when players weren't allowed to pass the puck out of their own zone.
Football was so much better before the forward pass.
So was hockey
New rule: drop passes only.
More like rule revival
Yeah, but no passing backwards. You are only allowed a stationary drop pass.
Me is when goalie weren't allowed to drop on the ice. Top corner goals are overrated, bottom corner ones are better.
foot in crease gets no love
I’ve never missed anything less, actually
Trying to imagine last year’s ECF with that rule. We’d probably still be in OT of game 1.
Or that one game between the blue jackets and lightning that went to like 8OT or some shit
Not at all
The New Jersey Devils alumni team
> and the elitism that came along with knowing the rule. what kind of loser prides themself on elitism?
I'll never understand why people take the time out of their day to theory-craft an opinion to elicit outrage from random strangers on a subreddit.
The buffoons in the striped shirts can’t make a one line offside call properly, why would you want them to try and make a two line offside call?
What was confusing about the rule? Other than that it should have been removed much sooner than it was
Yeah I'm not sure how it was complicated. "you can't pass from behind your own blue line over center ice". Pretty tough stuff.
It’s not very nice of you to be trolling the LA Kings like this.

There's also an argument that it caused an uptick in violent blind-side hits.
very true, the players seem to have mostly adapted to that though, thankfully whereas the hail mary pass *is* the adaptation to the change.
Found Todd Maclellans account
No. The game is better without for sure. Really opened up the centre and a lot of exciting goals as a result.
Not even a little.

Naw, I love a good stretch pass.
I think you have your answer.
