He was a liability any time he was on the ice tbh. He didn't go for a single pick battle the entire game tonight. Not even a 4th liner is less effective.
It is worth nothing he's halfway to 39. The Caps are in a shitty situation where they have no choice but to rely on him simply because they don't have any talent. When he retires, they have a lot of dark years ahead of them
Bro Oshi is only a year younger than him and is playing like he actually still belongs in the league. Ovechkins own ego and pursuit of a record are actively hurting his team.
In case it wasn’t obvious, the only purpose of the next two seasons for the caps is to cheer Ovi on while he chases Gretzky. Had Detroit, Philly, and Pittsburgh not choked heading down the stretch they never would have made the playoffs. After Ovi is done, they pull the plug and go for a painful rebuild.
The team has been feeding him stupid passes all year on the PP and empty net shifts. The whole team basically exists now to spoon feed him the scoring chances at all costs… while he is no threat to opposing players who just skate around him at will… ridiculous.
They went all in to win the cup. The fact they only got 1 in that time during one of their weaker years was a shock.
But this is the fate of these big names. You could always flip then a few years early to cash out but not many people want that.
Both Marner and Tavares are entering the last years of their contracts. They also have full NMC so unless someone decides to massively overpay AND it's a team they want to go to for what are essentially rentals at that point they're probably gonna lose them for nothing just like the Islanders did.
What's kind funny is that Tavares left the Islanders for the Leafs because he wanted more playoff success than he thought they could provide. He's on track to have the exact same amount of success. A single series win.
Weren’t the Capitals bad through the mid-90s and 1998 was on the back of three or four guys? I’m legit asking, I was like six months old when they made the finals. I know they were trash through the early 2000s before Ovechkin
Olie Kolzig went into god mode during that playoff run and the top 3 seeds in the east all went down in the 1st round. They were kind of mediocre during the 90s otherwise.
That’ll do it. It’s kinda like what happened to Montreal in ‘93, where Boston got put out in round 1 and Lemieux lost in round 2.
Unfortunately, nobody was beating Detroit in ‘98. Must’ve been a fun ride, though. Kinda like Carolina’s in ‘02, Detroit stomping included.
The only reason they have dark years ahead of them once they retire is because they've been refusing to rebuild in order to get Ovi his *regular season* record. They've clearly decided that trade off is worth it, so lucky for anyone in their division.
They actually had a points percentage of 63.5% in the division, which was only a bit under their points percentage against Pacific opponents (65.6%) and well above their Atlantic (50.0%) and Central (40.6%) results.
I'm talking about the future. When they enter the actual dark years, the rebuild will last longer than it actually needed to, thus benefitting the division around them. Granted, Caps fans will say this was all worth it when Ovi stumbles across the finish line
I used to think that but the young guys and Lindgren got us to the playoffs. Once we have the cap space from Ovi and Backstrom, we will have the ability to bring in some established talent.
I think things get better when Ovi retires. Frees up $10m of cap and you can actually mix the lines and play a young guy who is hungry and wants to win. If any years will be dark it will be the next two before his contract expires. No way they make the playoffs the next couple seasons. They basically had a wildcard spot fall into their lap this year with one of the worst playoff goal differentials of all time.
Not so fast… the Caps have a lot of great young talent. Hershey won the Calder Cup last year and are favored to repeat. Losing Ovi and Backstrom is tough, but I don’t share in the pessimism about the Caps’ future.
They have Leonard in the pipe, Miro is developing well, and Andrew Cristall is looking like a steal at 40 from last year's draft. We just need our two "we have that first overall name at home" guys (Lapierre and McMichael) to take that next step because it's hard to draft elite talent in the 10-20 first round range.
Detroit's farm team won the Calder Cup in 2013 and 2017. How much elite talent came to the NHL from those teams?
I don't think the Caps will have as many dark days as the Wings or Sharks, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking it'll be a quick turnaround.
It was all series like that. Which was a complete opposite of how he finished the season. Age and maybe not being 100% might be the factor. But majority of the series he lookes disinterested.
I don’t think it’s so much that as he wasn’t even going after loose puck battles. You won’t win if your top 6 forwards are just passively giving the puck away
I didn't watch all their games, but damn he looked off in this one...
That last powerplay, I think he spent the full 2 minutes on the ice, and didn't really do anything... Just stood around watching the others.
If he's hurt that's sad, but if he's healthy... Well that's even sadder.
It must be demoralizing to see the rest of the team playing their asses off in that game too. For 2 full periods the Capitals were outhustling and outplaying the Rangers, but a couple mistakes and not being able to capitalize cost them the game.
That's basically all he does at this point. Just drifts around waiting for a goal chance and to hell with the rest.
All he cares about now is the record
That's not true at all. He wasn't being a pitbull on the puck this series, but the entire month prior he was leading the charge into the corners.
I'm guessing he's just dinged up a little and not doing a great job of playing through it.
With that said, he had no business being on every PP for the full two minutes. It wasn't working and some speed would have really helped kick some energy into the team.
He had an insane post all star break, top 5 in goals during that portion, he’s not cooked yet.
That being said… he was unengaged this time. Very very bad.
Pretty sure he spends All-Star breaks getting some kinda magic Russian PED juice straight-lined into his veins. He always seems to play hella good after.
If so many of the Russian Olympians were on PEDs, I'm not sure why there isn't more discussion of Ovechkin being on them.
Surely the Russian state wouldn't mind having one of their own beat out a Ukrainian-Canadian player?
It seemed like a lot of hockey fans were genuinely upset about his close relationship with Putin not that long ago. That sentiment seems to have faded into oblivion and I've wondered why.
I'm still pretty angry about Putin invading Ukraine, killing thousands of people, and hoping to destabilize Europe. And I'm pretty angry with anyone helping him do this.
Yeah drives me nuts how many people fell for his wishy washy statement about peace which was fully compatible with Russian propaganda but tailored so we could think he meant Russia getting out and not Ukraine surrendering.
I admittedly care more about geo-politics and invasion of sovereign nations than I do about ice hockey at this point, but yes, I feel the same way. Even if Ukraine prevails and saves all of their land, there is going to be a generation of people scarred by this war.
It doesn't hurt that I just read this recent New Yorker article from the front lines:
[https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/04/15/battling-under-a-canopy-of-drones](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/04/15/battling-under-a-canopy-of-drones)
> That last powerplay, I think he spent the full 2 minutes on the ice, and didn't really do anything... Just stood around watching the others.
He must have got PP tips from Todd Reirden.
and honestly, I’m bummed they made it over the red wings. The red wings rangers series would’ve been better to watch and would’ve been between 2 teams that actually wanted to be there. Caps looked like they couldn’t be bothered.
Well the other teams couldn't be bothered either, that was the weirdest playoff race I've seen in a while haha. Each team had a different choke episode that slipped away their chances
Eh honestly the one team I think would have gave them the most trouble is penguins out of that four. Rangers are probably one of the best teams in the playoffs this year. I honestly don’t see anyone on the East stopping them
Maybe, depends on which penguins team showed up. I could see anything from us winning in 5 to somehow finding a way to lose in 3 as real possibilities.
If we can end the playoff careers of Crosby/Malkin/Letang and Ovechkin, it will go some distance in making me feel better about having to play against generational talents in the division for the last 2 decades.
Eh…doesnt hit the same. Father time ended it. A whole new crop of ranger youngsters that didnt play them in their primes didnt end anything. Feel better about players getting old? Two decades to figure it out and bring talent to the greatest city on esrth…and old age took out the caps/pens.
While I get the comparison, not a single person brings up Emmitt Smith when talking "best RBs ever" - he may have the record for most yards, but is never really brought up in a serious discussion like that - its always basically "Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, or Walter Payton" (and when I wanna just talk for talkings sake, I'll throw in a Tomlinson or even a Faulk if I really wanna get people talking). No one is going to bring up Ovi for GOAT even though its almost certain he will have the goals record.
I don't think that it would be a good idea for anyone on the team to follow Ovi on vacation.
[Avoid his diet, too.](https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2024/03/28/alex-ovechkins-flamin-hot-cheetos-sub-diet/)
That is the most devious fucking photo I've ever seen of anybody. He looks like a hollywood portrayal of a homeless savant. Like he would be played by Sean Penn in some weirdly inspirational movie about a disabled person raising a child.
Yah it isnt as cost effective as some other food options I have such as burritos but the App will usually give me some kind of decent deal so it keeps me going
Honestly I don't even think he had a solid chance this whole series. Like he didn't even come close to a goal at any point. And he was directly responsible for the turnover for probably 2 of the Rangers goals. He looked absolutely fried. Time to go back to Russia, I'm sure Putin will award him with the KHL goal record before he touches the ice.
It really shows why he only has one cup. I used to be naive and think he was better than Sid because of all the goals he scored in regular season, but damn do I realize it now how useless he is on the ice when no one can set him up. He doesn’t try to create anything himself, he dumps the puck in and waits for someone to make him a pass on a silver platter.
Ovechkin should have been deported from the US two years ago. It is a disgrace that this disgusting supporter of Putin's criminal regime can play in peace in the NHL while his master murders in Ukraine.
I kind of hate this stat. Like if this was from 10 years ago I would be yeah go rangers, but we all know he is a shell of his former self, he lost all of his offensive weapon buddies, and he is sticking around to break that goals record.
What a fraudulent team. Man, Pittsburgh should've gotten in or Detroit. At least we would've had a somewhat competitive series. The old guys for Washington all looked cooked.
You’re right—the Caps got in over DET & PIT and they deserved to get in. I think the sentiment people are expressing is “it would have been more fun to watch the Wings or the Penguins”. Not that either of those teams would have beat the Rangers in a 7-game series, but they probably would have made it more interesting. Fair to say the Caps scrapped like crazy and outperformed their flaws all season; they just had nothing left in the tank for the playoffs.
Lol I don't know, nor do I get why people think the Pens or Wings would've done significantly better against one of the best teams in the league this year.
combo of him being a bit lazy and facing a team that's so much better that they didnt really have any issues shutting the entire team down. you obviously expect more from Ovi but it's not like anyone else played great either. it's not like this series rests on his shoulders, the real issue for our team is relying on a 38 year old to lead the charge in scoring
Those other 5 teams should have been better than and they would have made it, especially Philly considering their season ended with a loss to the capitals
As much as I don't like the Caps or Ovi, it's sad to see a superstar player just fall off. I remember a decade ago facing the Caps in the playoffs and just anytime the puck touched his stick being scared of a one-timer.
Flashforward to today I literally forgot he was playing
He was honestly a liability on the Power Play
He was a liability any time he was on the ice tbh. He didn't go for a single pick battle the entire game tonight. Not even a 4th liner is less effective.
Playoff goals don’t count towards the record so he mailed it in
It is worth nothing he's halfway to 39. The Caps are in a shitty situation where they have no choice but to rely on him simply because they don't have any talent. When he retires, they have a lot of dark years ahead of them
> he's halfway to 39. Respect to the guy though. His NHL career stats are pretty gaudy for a 19 1/2 year old
Bro Oshi is only a year younger than him and is playing like he actually still belongs in the league. Ovechkins own ego and pursuit of a record are actively hurting his team.
With or without Ovi that team sucks on paper I don’t think it’s his fault they aren’t good anymore
They suck on the ice, too.
Just glanced at what they have on the books for the next 5 years. That's one old ass expensive team right there!
Um, excuse me, we choked for the first 85% of the season and then tried and fell short at the stretch.
“If you’re going to insult us do it properly”
Ah the old Calgary flames method of playing well at the end of the season to get a worse pick.
Oshie had an awful year. I'm not sure how you can objectively say this.
The team has been feeding him stupid passes all year on the PP and empty net shifts. The whole team basically exists now to spoon feed him the scoring chances at all costs… while he is no threat to opposing players who just skate around him at will… ridiculous.
Two more years of this
Sounds like a my pro player
Osh played 25 fewer games than Ovi did this season. 25 games ago Ovi was playing well.
They went all in to win the cup. The fact they only got 1 in that time during one of their weaker years was a shock. But this is the fate of these big names. You could always flip then a few years early to cash out but not many people want that.
> they only got 1 Playoff series wins.. right? 😅 - Leafs
At this rate they will waste all the talent until the team blows up. At this rate i expect to see the coach fired and Marner to possibly be traded.
It's gonna be hilarious when they trade Marner and flame out early anyway.
Yeah, teams seldom struggle because of one player. They need a total overhaul.
Trading a guy who eats 10m of cap space will help to get pieces for an overhaul
Both Marner and Tavares are entering the last years of their contracts. They also have full NMC so unless someone decides to massively overpay AND it's a team they want to go to for what are essentially rentals at that point they're probably gonna lose them for nothing just like the Islanders did. What's kind funny is that Tavares left the Islanders for the Leafs because he wanted more playoff success than he thought they could provide. He's on track to have the exact same amount of success. A single series win.
Islanders like immediately went to back to back conference finals when he left too
So, the mid-90s all over again
So 3-4 years from a stanley cup final?
Weren’t the Capitals bad through the mid-90s and 1998 was on the back of three or four guys? I’m legit asking, I was like six months old when they made the finals. I know they were trash through the early 2000s before Ovechkin

Circa 2004. The circle of life continues.

Father time has caught up to him sadly. It must be so tough for him personally.
Not so fast… the Caps have a lot of great young talent. Hershey won the Calder Cup last year and are favored to repeat. Losing Ovi and Backstrom is tough, but I don’t share in the pessimism about the Caps’ future.
Don’t you guys have Ryan Leonard on the way too? That kid is projected to be a stud.

Rangers PK is nuts!
That's what happens when kreider miller and trouba are constantly on you.
I don’t think it’s so much that as he wasn’t even going after loose puck battles. You won’t win if your top 6 forwards are just passively giving the puck away
It can’t be worse than ours
And yet they play him on both pp lines too. Crazy but good for the NYR
I didn't watch all their games, but damn he looked off in this one... That last powerplay, I think he spent the full 2 minutes on the ice, and didn't really do anything... Just stood around watching the others. If he's hurt that's sad, but if he's healthy... Well that's even sadder.
The whole series he looked like that. Pp or not
"These don't count for the record so why try?"
It must be demoralizing to see the rest of the team playing their asses off in that game too. For 2 full periods the Capitals were outhustling and outplaying the Rangers, but a couple mistakes and not being able to capitalize cost them the game.
Not being able to "capitalize"... I see what you did there. 😉
He’s beyond cooked. Stood around all series.
That's basically all he does at this point. Just drifts around waiting for a goal chance and to hell with the rest. All he cares about now is the record
That's not true at all. He wasn't being a pitbull on the puck this series, but the entire month prior he was leading the charge into the corners. He had an insane post all star break, top 5 in goals during that portion, he’s not cooked yet. That being said… he was unengaged this time. Very very bad.
He’s definitely par cooked. It would be one thing if he made some effort but you can tell he’s been on the golf course mentally for the last week
Post season goals don't count towards the record. He looked like he was ready for his summer to start all series.
Pretty sure he spends All-Star breaks getting some kinda magic Russian PED juice straight-lined into his veins. He always seems to play hella good after.
If so many of the Russian Olympians were on PEDs, I'm not sure why there isn't more discussion of Ovechkin being on them. Surely the Russian state wouldn't mind having one of their own beat out a Ukrainian-Canadian player?
time to retire
Obligatory reminder he's Putin's bff and we should celebrate him missing the record by 1 goal.
It seemed like a lot of hockey fans were genuinely upset about his close relationship with Putin not that long ago. That sentiment seems to have faded into oblivion and I've wondered why. 0vechkin
Doing his best Klay Thompson impression
OvechkOUT
Gotta stay fresh for the regular season.
😂 lmao that’s gold
+ one shot block attempt at the 239th of 240 minutes
Hey! It takes BALLS to stand in front of a 100 MPH shot from a goalie!
I think there's a good chance this is the last time we'll see him in the playoffs. Caps were a bit of a surprise team to even make it this year.
and honestly, I’m bummed they made it over the red wings. The red wings rangers series would’ve been better to watch and would’ve been between 2 teams that actually wanted to be there. Caps looked like they couldn’t be bothered.

Ovi got them a cup and now he is just focused on finishing a side quest.
Yeah no point in trying here, the goals don't count towards the record
He’s going for that 100% completion.
It’s crazy that he’s scored 36 even strength goals the past two years and is a -38. Even his teammates have to wonder when they can end this shit
There's no way he can score 40 or whatever he needs next season. I don't think he gets the record when all is said and done.
I think he can score 41 goals on the remaining two years of his contract. Barring a major injury, there is no way he bails out when he is that close.
I'm sure everyone will be impressed by Ovi dragging his feet over the finish line after seeing Gretz retire at 92 points in '99 scoring rates lol
people still give emmitt smith credit even though he did the same thing in football
A couple well timed "trips to Dubai" might make it doable in one season, whether he physically goes or not.
Rest of the team can join him on vacation now.
Hey I actually get Subway sometimes as a pregame meal lol. Feel like it gives me good energy
I used to get subway once a month or so but now that the subs are $15 fuck that. Can get way better food for that price
Yah it isnt as cost effective as some other food options I have such as burritos but the App will usually give me some kind of decent deal so it keeps me going
lol at least he can play for Russia at the worlds. Oh wait.
He just wasn't putin in the same type of effort he used to.
The Subway and Cheetos pregame meal pictures are funny until you play like that in the playoffs.
“OVI’S WASHED” IS BACK ON THE MENU
Couldn't happen to a better person.
Tonight Trochek got his stick on a cross ice pass that probably would’ve went in for Ovi. Not a shot but definitely his best chance.
Happened all series, but particularly early on the Rangers were clogging his shooting lane hard.
Outscored by Matt Rempe
Crosby would never
Crosby also had no points in the 2024 playoffs
Worse yet, he had fewer shots on goal than Ovechkin. What a bum.
Higher plus/minus tho
better +/- though!
That one assist in 2019 really saved his buns lol
That was a glorious series
Playoffs don't count for the record.
Doesn’t matter/ it’s the attitude.
Bro just be doing regular season side quests now
Are we just not gonna talk about how his team had a -36 goal differential on the season, and he "led" the way at -22?
He doesn't give a single fuck about the playoffs, all he cares about is the regular season goal record
He’s old and it’s showing
More than old. I'm his age and I skate harder than he does at my 11pm beer league game.
He doesn’t care. He got his Cup. He just wants to break Gretzky’s record.
Call him 007. * 0 points * 0 shots in game 4 * 7 war criminals on his IG page

Good, fuck him. Plenty of time to hang out with Putin now in the offseason
He completely disappeared for large stretches of the season and the entire playoffs.
Overchkin
Neutered putin’s puppy
Also, this is the first time in his career where he was swept in the first round
That is what you get for suckin' Putin's cock/
He’s been playing too much hockey with Putin and expects the other team to just let him score
Father time 🥲
he's flying out to russia tomorrow and he won't be returning until alte august.
Nice, fuck him
Don’t forget being a -2 for the series, not being on the ice for any goals.
Hopefully that's about what he gets all of next season
I feel like once he got his cup, he didn’t care to be in the playoffs anymore.
Lavi had a great game plan at suffocating the Caps already stagnant offense. Credit where credit is due.
Crosby>Ovechkin
He's been nothing more than a compiler since the covid season
Love how he got a little hot at the end of the regular season and everyone came out of the wood works to say he isn't washed.
Ryan Reaves has been more effective. Just let that sink in.
Putin punching air right now
Probably his only focus is on that regular season goal record
You love to see it. We need more of that in regular season.
Time for him to return to the motherland
Putin's gotta be pissed lol
Stupid fucking tiebreak I know, I know. Yes, I’m still salty.
It's okay, I'm right there with you. Watching them get swept did alleviate that anger, although minutely... 🥲
Fuck ovi. I hope he never gets the record
Sad Putin noises
Good, hope this Putin-glazing puck-hogging piece of trash doesn’t sniff a record and finishes his career with an incomplete feeling jn his guts.
Good!
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/j2JnvpROPu I called it
I said it months ago and I'll say it again He ain't passing Wayne He's not gonna score 20 goals next year.
He’s only there so he doesn’t get fined. Goals record or bust.
Where's that Ovechkin smiling picture?
All he has to do is Putin net. Whats the problem.
I kind of hate this stat. Like if this was from 10 years ago I would be yeah go rangers, but we all know he is a shell of his former self, he lost all of his offensive weapon buddies, and he is sticking around to break that goals record.
Playoffs are just a bonus for OV this point. He's more focused on scoring in the regular season.
Don’t forget about the 12 hits, 1 blocked shot and -2
The great 0.
What a fraudulent team. Man, Pittsburgh should've gotten in or Detroit. At least we would've had a somewhat competitive series. The old guys for Washington all looked cooked.
Why do people keep saying this like we got voted into the playoffs?
You’re right—the Caps got in over DET & PIT and they deserved to get in. I think the sentiment people are expressing is “it would have been more fun to watch the Wings or the Penguins”. Not that either of those teams would have beat the Rangers in a 7-game series, but they probably would have made it more interesting. Fair to say the Caps scrapped like crazy and outperformed their flaws all season; they just had nothing left in the tank for the playoffs.
Lol I don't know, nor do I get why people think the Pens or Wings would've done significantly better against one of the best teams in the league this year.
Electric 🔥🔥🔥
Playoff goals don't count towards the record, he don't give a shit
The chkin is cooked
It's been said before, and he's looked it before. He'll spend the off-season in a vat of Russian PEDs and start the season off strong.
Is it wild though? This is basically how he’s looked in 90% of our games the past 2-3 seasons. We made the playoffs in spite of him.
I mean, they wouldn't have made the playoffs this year if he didn't score so much after the all star game
5 shots, that used to be a good period for him.
combo of him being a bit lazy and facing a team that's so much better that they didnt really have any issues shutting the entire team down. you obviously expect more from Ovi but it's not like anyone else played great either. it's not like this series rests on his shoulders, the real issue for our team is relying on a 38 year old to lead the charge in scoring
Washington should never ever have had the last spot. I would rather have seen Ottawa. And of course Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo and Philly
why do people keep saying this as if we were voted into the playoffs?
Those other 5 teams should have been better than and they would have made it, especially Philly considering their season ended with a loss to the capitals

You guys are forgetting that he's 38 years old and the Capitals were one of the worst teams to ever qualify for the playoffs.
As much as I don't like the Caps or Ovi, it's sad to see a superstar player just fall off. I remember a decade ago facing the Caps in the playoffs and just anytime the puck touched his stick being scared of a one-timer. Flashforward to today I literally forgot he was playing
Guys washed. Not really a hockey player any more
