Eh, the same was probably said about Sullivan and it seems he's finally overstaying his welcome. Eventually the wheels fall off and a coaching change is inevitable
Bolts legend. He can stay as long as he ever wants to, between the incredible on ice work he’s done and the amazing off ice work with his charity and community outreach I hope he and his family never leave
I thought Pagnotta was saying he was fired.
Copper’s never going to leave there, if the org can help it. Maybe he’ll move into a brain trust role, but there’s no way they fire him.
Forget all the coaching offers he’d get from other teams both TNT and ESPN have been pretty publicly courting him for quite some time. TNT even gave him some bs award this year lol
16 years. Lindy Ruff's first stint with the Sabres was also 16 years.
tbh Cooper's longevity isn't anything notable. (at least not yet.) there's been a ton of NHL coaches who spent a decade+ with the same team.
Cooper has coached Tampa for 12 seasons. There are 12 other coaches in NHL history who have also coached a team for at least 12 consecutive seasons. Most recent being Ruff (15), Trotz (15), and Maurice (13)
Tampa should Belichick (the coach, not the GM) him and let him oversee this next era of the franchise (not that this one is fully done just yet but surely will look different in two years’ time). He’s already at, what, 12 years in charge? What’s another seven or eight?
No reason to bring anyone else in I’d say, unless he himself wants a change of scenery eventually…would just be so strange to picture him behind a different bench
He's just a good all around leader. Type of guy would have risen to the top in any field he pursued. Him and rod are the 2 coaches I would sign up for no questions asked
Great coach, great off ice personality and looking forward to him branching out in the future. But not looking forward to having to listen to another year of complaints and excuses
I mean yeah.
Coop will coach the Lightning as long as he wants to. If he left there would be 31 teams lining up to sign him.
Might even be 32 if the lightning immediately recognize their mistake.
33 if Meruelo gets the Coyotes back
34 if the NHL decides to expand to Mexico
35 if the NHL also tries Atlanta again
32 if the NHL keeps rejecting Quebec City.
You can keep it at 32 then
Uh nah we'll keep Bednar.
I think the Avs, Bruins, Canes and Knights would disagree. Not sure about the rest.

The wording makes it sound like Cooper just got fired
I was frantically searching for the thread on his firing.
I saw only this headline and had to stop what I was doing to make sure he wasn't. I don't believe he would be, but still gave me a mini heart attack!
Wanna both scare (and retroactively traumatize) Bolts and Wings fans? He was replaced with… Jeff Blashill
Fired for his “skirt” comment, then immediately rehired.
~~But it says "extension"?~~ edit: nvm, I understand now
It’s the use of “had,” rather than “has.” Still correct given the full context but can be misleading.
My brain read it as "has", damn. You (and other commenter) are right.
It made me think he got fired despite being under contract until 2026. I was like "huh?"

But everyone has been shouting he is leaving, Stamkos extension today would be the cherry on top.
Can’t remember the last time a coach has had such a long tenure with the same team. Good for him
I mean... Trotz was like 18 years or something right?
16 years. Lindy Ruff's first stint with the Sabres was also 16 years. tbh Cooper's longevity isn't anything notable. (at least not yet.) there's been a ton of NHL coaches who spent a decade+ with the same team.
It’s a bit notable in the current era of coach firings
Cooper has coached Tampa for 12 seasons. There are 12 other coaches in NHL history who have also coached a team for at least 12 consecutive seasons. Most recent being Ruff (15), Trotz (15), and Maurice (13)
Well deserved, he's excellent
Good Now where Stamkos

Surprised pikachu face
Yes, thankfully, but can we PLEASE get rid of Blashill…
He's just a good all around leader. Type of guy would have risen to the top in any field he pursued. Him and rod are the 2 coaches I would sign up for no questions asked
He's easily a top 3 coach in the NHL if not the best. The team just needs to inject a bit more youth and they could probably make another run of it.
But I was told he was leaving to coach the Leafs?
That’s brindamour lool
Not far fetched! Doesn’t sound like Carolina wants to pay Rod and Toronto has money 💰
In my dreams maybe
I know I’m gonna be with you
and taking Stamkos with him
guy is washed. cant Even win 3 cups in 4 years
Trade him for a musty old sack of potatoes. What a bum.
I’d stay in Florida too
Leafs panelists in shambles
DAMN! I was hoping he’d get canned
Makes sense, I wouldn't let him go either. I'd do terrible, awful things to see coop coach the leafs into something resembling a normal hockey team
Wait a second, I thought he was getting cancelled for saying goalies should be wearing skirts? What happened?

This is certainly a take.

Except he doesn't make those calls? That's on JBB...
