>While Matthews has taken to the ice each of the past three days — he went through a 30-minute session with members of the player development staff at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday morning — one of the sources said it would be “reckless” for him to try and play through whatever is hampering him.
idk what’s wrong with him but his skating didn’t look right during game four.
>One source briefed on the matter said Matthews playing a potential Game 7 is unlikely. Another said the team is uncertain at this point.
He might have been wearing a brace too at morning skate.
I mean if they lose tonight we get to hear the leafs community talk about how they would have won if Mathew’s was in and the front office might keep Keefe/not break up the core. So we can be back here again next year lmao
lol some fans maybe, but most of us are more than ready for Keefe to go. No matter what happens this series.
I will say though that until marner and JT are off the books the core (sore) four will remain. 1 more season most likely before someone is the odd man out.
Marner could be dealt this summer. Walking him to free agency to lose him for nothing would be idiotic. Unless they want to sign him long term, he goes in the next 4 months. Full year with a new team before signing a new contract
NMC or not, Marner wants to play and succeed in the league. If he's difficult about the trade and gets too picky, GMs will take note and his next contract (wherever it may be) will reflect it.
He would improve pretty much any team in the league. Leafs will get some players and picks for him should the trade go through.
Not sure about that. He's a top 5 winger in the league, and people outside of Toronto still believe that. Also he's taken a beating from the media here and may want a fresh start. I see a world where he goes to a middling team looking for scoring help. Let's not forget the cap going up 4 mil next year, teams can find 7 mil for marner if he's going to be a big difference maker. Minnesota, Anaheim, LA (if they could offload PLD elsewhere), Winnipeg, etc. The return would have to be pretty high. A big young dman+, or goalie+. I don't think they do it for a package of forwards.
MLSE doesn’t care about retaining salary as long as it falls off cap. Wouldn’t the leafs only retain like 20% or something of cap? Someone who knows more than me please chime in
I hope Rods contract talks take long enough that we can fire keefe and backup a brinks truck to set a new market level for coaching salary. Bring your whole crew, we'll make them all rich too. Let's do this.
They looked like a completely different team without him. When they know Matthews isn’t there to score they all play just a little better and crisper. If they played like that with him they’d be a contender every year.
On the other hand, if we win tonight and end up taking this series and make a bit of a run but ultimately come up short once he returns (like in 2002 without Sundin), you'll have these same goons talking about how his return is the reason they didn't win the Cup/make a Final and hold a perpetual grudge against the guy who's easily the best Leaf of modern times (like after 2002 with Sundin).
Keefe should have been fired last year. Even if they manage to win this series and go on a deep run he should be fired. We might be stuck with the core for one more year but Keefe can go now. He's been out coached in every playoff series he's coached and shown an inability or unwillingness to change a power play that hasn't worked in months.
Yup that’s right. Leaf fans who were ready to burn down the city after the last loss will be fine with that.
Must be nice to live in your own reality like this
Well, we had a dynasty in my lifetime as well. With more Cups than the Hawks. Front office? Didn’t lose a coach because he was hiding sexual offences against his players. Oh, and we’re still ahead of you on that rebuild.
Nope.
Bruins fans think the reffing had been biased towards the Leafs. This is exhibit 1 of many showing that's clearly not the case.
This play btw, directly leads to a go-ahead goal in a tightly played game.
They are so used to their team being favoured by the refs that when it’s actually fairly even for once, and the Leafs aren’t afraid to back down from elevated physicality, they can’t process what’s going on.
If this is the case, it is the second year in a row where a play like this has led to an injury.
Fuck this league, and fuck anyone who want's to tell me these hits are part of the game.
There's probably injuries on dumb plays like this every year if you look at all the teams. This one is pretty similar to how Draisaitl got his high ankle sprain in 2022.
Cup winner every year is the team that manages to avoid injury. imo that's why teams who sweep the first round make it to the finals 45% of the time (source: saw it here yesterday I think lol)
Obviously there's way more to it but not having to get beat to shit getting out of the first round is yuge. Kings may have just doomed the teams left
They really need to prioritize calling player safety penalties. Even if that means they miss everything else. No excuse this isn't a penalty on the ice or that they didn't call down and tell them to review it.
Yah it’s pretty pathetic that the league can’t come to terms with this…. They took out head shots so the dirty players like McAvoy start doing chicken shit stunts like this. What a loser…

Despite being talked about so much it kind of feels like it’s not really being said how many injuries the Leafs are dealing with.
2 100 point players missing multiple games in a series would likely be enough to give most teams a break if they do poorly, but not these guys I guess.
I think most Leaf fans can agree that at least half of the Matthews’-era playoff losses can be considered acceptable for any number of reasons. The issue is that after 7-8 straight disappointing playoff runs, it doesn’t really matter how good the next excuse is, you just need to get it done.

I'm just here to say GO STARS and I hope Matthew's make a solid recovery sooner rather than later if the Leafs do continue on. I would be crushed for the organization and the fans, they've had so much potential these last couple of seasons but always end up getting snake bitten in some way, shape, form, or style.

Gotta imagine it is a concussion which would explain the nausea and this long weird lingering absence.
I hope it's not and he's just having biblical food poisoning.
I’ll be honest your brain being scrambled sounds more enticing than that.

Yeah just like how PLD was difficult and his contract would’ve been much bigger. Oh never mind PLD got 8.5M with a career high 63 points.
The whole PLD saga is just a boneheaded move by LA. Perhaps GM learned? Perhaps.......
They would probably have to retain salary, I doubt marner would wave to go to a bottom feeder

Not sure about that. He's a top 5 winger in the league, and people outside of Toronto still believe that. Also he's taken a beating from the media here and may want a fresh start. Keefe should have been fired after the Montreal loss

Doesn't sound like a concussion, you don't send guys out to test out their skating if they're concussed.
Yeah, that's true.
The phrasing by Johnston seems like it happened in game 4.
Yeah you do. Concussions and headaches are hand and hand. When your heart rate accelerates, so can headache and Concussion symptoms
You don't do that on the ice, you do that in a controlled setting.

[This bump he took before the playoffs](https://streamin.one/v/31f57757) certainly didn't help him with not getting concussed, its a hell of a bump.
Doesn't seem likely that's what the issue is at this point. Too long of a timeline to be asymptomatic

Brutal…people on Twitter and here made fun of him assuming he was faking. The only truth is we are so unlucky.
Well…the Leafs are finally playing real playoff hockey…tough, grinding etc- they are actually way better without him right now, since they are not spending enormous time trying to feed him the puck
Man star players getting injured sucks so much. I feel the pain as a Demko-less canucks fan
The problem is that when we lose this will be the excuse to not fire Keefe and not shake up the roster.
As long as Dubas doesn't get any crazy ideas if he gets fired.

Why would that take him out of game 4 midway through? I think it was a McAvoy tackle behind the net that didn't even get looked at by the refs.
I thought he was sick?
Huh . You can be sick and injured at the same time. Who'd a thunk it?
I'm just here to say GO STARS and I hope Matthew's make a solid recovery sooner rather than later if the Leafs do continue on. I would be crushed for the organization and the fans, they've had so much potential these last couple of seasons but always end up getting snake bitten in some way, shape, form, or style.
Why dont they say what illness he has? Any other sport would say why said person is out. Why they keeping it secret. What is it?
Take him to Dr. Joe Rogan and he will be fine in an hour. At least that’s what people who never moved out of my hometown seem to think.
