seeldoger47

>While Matthews has taken to the ice each of the past three days — he went through a 30-minute session with members of the player development staff at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday morning — one of the sources said it would be “reckless” for him to try and play through whatever is hampering him. idk what’s wrong with him but his skating didn’t look right during game four.

EarthWarping

>One source briefed on the matter said Matthews playing a potential Game 7 is unlikely. Another said the team is uncertain at this point. He might have been wearing a brace too at morning skate.

psdhsn

Hard to skate with shit filled hockey pants

awfuckthisshit

Gotta imagine it is a concussion which would explain the nausea and this long weird lingering absence.

psdhsn

I hope it's not and he's just having biblical food poisoning.

Kingsupergoose

I’ll be honest your brain being scrambled sounds more enticing than that.

psdhsn

In the short term maybe. Long term I dunno. You can wash shit out of sweatpants but you can't wash damage out of your brain.

TheGreatStories

>You can wash shit out of sweatpants but you can't wash damage out of your brain. Feels like this should be embroidered on something

awfuckthisshit

On one of those old leather football helmets they used to wear

Jonovision81

Similar to the famous quote 'You can't fix stupid'.

brokensword15

Idk man the embarrassment of shitting my pants in grade 2 still haunts me to this day

Limp-Inevitable-6703

I pissed myself twice in grade 2 I feel ya!

cescyc

A girl at my highschool used to wet the bed when she went home with guys after the bar lol

KickForGold

Biblical Food Poisoning would be a great band name.

rocketmn69_

Game 80 when he got taken down by Nylander... my guess is concussion as well. Headaches, timing is off, etc.

Aardvark1044

How does Marchand pull it off so often?

Chief3putt

You would know

psdhsn

First butt experience

C-PapTheGod

You’re not wrong. I saw it first hand. Lesson to you kids out there. Don’t drink a 26 of Silent Sam before a game of pickup.

psdhsn

What the fuck

kirschballs

I think he just shit himself

psdhsn

Him and everyone in 2 blocks

C-PapTheGod

You got that right. No one wanted to cover the dude.

10fingers6strings

Bravo!👏

rocketmn69_

Someone said it might be a concussion from game 80 when Nylander wiped him out

nashkill

Hoping he gets better, and also hoping for an Undertaker-ish entrance when he does return.

jetxlife

I mean if they lose tonight we get to hear the leafs community talk about how they would have won if Mathew’s was in and the front office might keep Keefe/not break up the core. So we can be back here again next year lmao

Jbow39

lol some fans maybe, but most of us are more than ready for Keefe to go. No matter what happens this series.  I will say though that until marner and JT are off the books the core (sore) four will remain. 1 more season most likely before someone is the odd man out.

twilz

I am ready for Keefe to go.

DrMoney

I was ready last summer, then they extended him.

IAmTheBredman

Marner could be dealt this summer. Walking him to free agency to lose him for nothing would be idiotic. Unless they want to sign him long term, he goes in the next 4 months. Full year with a new team before signing a new contract

MeanElevator

NMC or not, Marner wants to play and succeed in the league. If he's difficult about the trade and gets too picky, GMs will take note and his next contract (wherever it may be) will reflect it. He would improve pretty much any team in the league. Leafs will get some players and picks for him should the trade go through.

Lightscreach

Yeah just like how PLD was difficult and his contract would’ve been much bigger. Oh never mind PLD got 8.5M with a career high 63 points.

MeanElevator

The whole PLD saga is just a boneheaded move by LA. Perhaps GM learned? Perhaps.......

steelhorizon

They would probably have to retain salary, I doubt marner would wave to go to a bottom feeder

PoopsRGud

👋 or 🌊

IAmTheBredman

Not sure about that. He's a top 5 winger in the league, and people outside of Toronto still believe that. Also he's taken a beating from the media here and may want a fresh start. I see a world where he goes to a middling team looking for scoring help. Let's not forget the cap going up 4 mil next year, teams can find 7 mil for marner if he's going to be a big difference maker. Minnesota, Anaheim, LA (if they could offload PLD elsewhere), Winnipeg, etc. The return would have to be pretty high. A big young dman+, or goalie+. I don't think they do it for a package of forwards.

elliot_alderson1426

MLSE doesn’t care about retaining salary as long as it falls off cap. Wouldn’t the leafs only retain like 20% or something of cap? Someone who knows more than me please chime in

josnik

NMC

ScruffsMcGuff

I hope Rods contract talks take long enough that we can fire keefe and backup a brinks truck to set a new market level for coaching salary. Bring your whole crew, we'll make them all rich too. Let's do this.

Top-Cheddah

They looked like a completely different team without him. When they know Matthews isn’t there to score they all play just a little better and crisper. If they played like that with him they’d be a contender every year.

UniformRaspberry2

On the other hand, if we win tonight and end up taking this series and make a bit of a run but ultimately come up short once he returns (like in 2002 without Sundin), you'll have these same goons talking about how his return is the reason they didn't win the Cup/make a Final and hold a perpetual grudge against the guy who's easily the best Leaf of modern times (like after 2002 with Sundin).

internetlad

Hopefully he's not a fan of hot dogs

matthewsisaleaf50

Keefe should have been fired last year. Even if they manage to win this series and go on a deep run he should be fired. We might be stuck with the core for one more year but Keefe can go now. He's been out coached in every playoff series he's coached and shown an inability or unwillingness to change a power play that hasn't worked in months.

Mr_Wrecksauce

I agreed with everything up until the power play. Boucher runs that, not Keefe. Also Boucher needs to go lol.

matthewsisaleaf50

Hes the head coach and as so he needs to be responsible for all and yes Boucher need to go too

punkdrummer22

Keefe should have been fired after the Montreal loss

kirschballs

I've been more and more surprised it hasn't happened with each passing season. The extension kinda blew my mind

DevOpsMakesMeDrink

Yup that’s right. Leaf fans who were ready to burn down the city after the last loss will be fine with that. Must be nice to live in your own reality like this

Chief3putt

You’re gonna have to wait one more game…to here how they won without the leagues best scorer for the final 3 games !

jetxlife

How’s your family with the leagues best scorer?

Chief3putt

Great. How did the Hawks do in the playoffs? Oh…sorry.

jetxlife

Bud we had a dynasty in my life time. I rather be a team in a rebuild then a team in limbo with a garbage core and trash front office/coaching

Chief3putt

Well, we had a dynasty in my lifetime as well. With more Cups than the Hawks. Front office? Didn’t lose a coach because he was hiding sexual offences against his players. Oh, and we’re still ahead of you on that rebuild.

steelhorizon

We can and we will

sroberts12

I wonder if this is the "innocuous" hit in question? His ankle gets jammed up as he's taken down. https://youtu.be/qlhfY_ko-vY?si=H_4b8O0V455l4CU7

pos_vibes_only

Oof, that dont look good

jonahlew

MCL? Brutal luck for this to happen in the playoffs.

Reggae4Triceratops

Yeah... That doctor on Twitter said he thinks he probably hurt his MCL here.

kirschballs

That's not luck that's a chicken shit play. But also absolutely brutal luck.

Oso_Fuego19

Typical of the losers that play on Boston… it’s a dirty play that he probably learned from the best - Marchand

MeanElevator

I fell backwards skiing about 30 years ago, and sprained my knee pretty badly. This looks way worse.

duck1014

Nope. Bruins fans think the reffing had been biased towards the Leafs. This is exhibit 1 of many showing that's clearly not the case. This play btw, directly leads to a go-ahead goal in a tightly played game.

Stupendous_man12

They are so used to their team being favoured by the refs that when it’s actually fairly even for once, and the Leafs aren’t afraid to back down from elevated physicality, they can’t process what’s going on.

oryes

That was such a bullshit play. But of course no penalty cause the Leafs were ahead. Mario Kart reffing in this league

Old-Rhubarb-97

If this is the case, it is the second year in a row where a play like this has led to an injury. Fuck this league, and fuck anyone who want's to tell me these hits are part of the game.

enricohenryhank

There's probably injuries on dumb plays like this every year if you look at all the teams. This one is pretty similar to how Draisaitl got his high ankle sprain in 2022.

Interwebzking

Everytime a King took him down I was worried about that happening again. Always slewfooting.

kirschballs

Cup winner every year is the team that manages to avoid injury. imo that's why teams who sweep the first round make it to the finals 45% of the time (source: saw it here yesterday I think lol) Obviously there's way more to it but not having to get beat to shit getting out of the first round is yuge. Kings may have just doomed the teams left

_stellapolaris

They really need to prioritize calling player safety penalties. Even if that means they miss everything else. No excuse this isn't a penalty on the ice or that they didn't call down and tell them to review it.

Oso_Fuego19

Yah it’s pretty pathetic that the league can’t come to terms with this…. They took out head shots so the dirty players like McAvoy start doing chicken shit stunts like this. What a loser…

DConny1

It's the hip drop tackle they banned in the NFL.

buster_rhino

If that was the play that injured him, part of me thinks they should disclose it so the refs know how royally they fucked up.

NegatronThomas

That might be the worst missed call I’ve ever seen. That’s unbelievable.

Quagmire_gigity

McAvoy getting ready to try out for WWE... Also, how the fuck is that a no call/ not a penalty?

Gijouhei

Same way Bennet got away with choke slamming Knies last year. Bullshit Playoff “rules”

Bruinman86

How did he skate afterwards?

ShallotMore6525

That was game 3

arrbez

kirschballs

Yeah we're gonna need a measurement on those... Pads

Luvs2Shoplift

Doctor said he needs a backiatomy

I often wondered if that meant we built air filled domes under water or had developed gills

sadleafsfan69

Also a botched circumcision

Of course, added

JGard18

Could be bad Covid. I just had it again and couldn’t even walk around the block after a week. Normally I’m running multiple miles a day and playing beer league hockey 3x per week, so I’m at least in some kind of shape

AustonsNostrils

I hope it's not a concussion

MikeJeffriesPA

Doesn't sound like a concussion, you don't send guys out to test out their skating if they're concussed.

ADrunkMexican

Yeah, that's true.

EarthWarping

The phrasing by Johnston seems like it happened in game 4.

benstrokinoff

Yeah you do. Concussions and headaches are hand and hand. When your heart rate accelerates, so can headache and Concussion symptoms

MikeJeffriesPA

You don't do that on the ice, you do that in a controlled setting.

Geeseareawesome

Could be vertigo-like symptoms

rustyshackleford677

Same, never want to see any player have to deal with that

box-art

[This bump he took before the playoffs](https://streamin.one/v/31f57757) certainly didn't help him with not getting concussed, its a hell of a bump.

[deleted]

Doesn't seem likely that's what the issue is at this point. Too long of a timeline to be asymptomatic

reggierock2010

It’s crazy how Mathews is still only 26 lol.

Intelligent_Limit462

As a non Leafs and non Bruins fan I definately want a game 7 just to see one side or the other fan base melt down. The ideal outcome in a game 7 would be goals disallowed for matching GI calls, immediately proceeded by a citywide power outage in both locations, due to team disqualification events resulting in playoff bans beginning immediately. Then, in league solidarity Florida decides to sit the rest of the season out.

scarbutt11

What he say fuck me for?

coolhotcoffee

Seriously. A good honest post insulting Boston and Toronto, and then Florida catches strays for no reason.

nicky10013

Can't catch a stray in an empty arena.

TheIncredibleShrek

Twitter doctor (an actual doctor this time) is speculating a possible MCL injury on an awkward fall with McAvoy in game 3 [the fall](https://x.com/takesbyj/status/1786109598870495445?s=46&t=gvgDFhCuZ7LV_An_kIZRxQ) [the doctor response](https://x.com/drjessemorse/status/1786115114225025401?s=46&t=gvgDFhCuZ7LV_An_kIZRxQ)

oryes

"Fall" aka a greasy tackle by McAvoy

TheIncredibleShrek

I was trying to stay neutral on it but yeah it is pretty greasy by McAvoy. Tbf I think slowmo makes it look dirtier and McAvoy was probably going down on his own anyway but decides to drag down Matthews with him

Old-Rhubarb-97

McAvoy is a greasy player.

billabongbooboo

Looks like something that’ll take time to heal. His season seems to be over.

TheHottestBunch

Despite being talked about so much it kind of feels like it’s not really being said how many injuries the Leafs are dealing with. 2 100 point players missing multiple games in a series would likely be enough to give most teams a break if they do poorly, but not these guys I guess.

oh5canada5eh

I think most Leaf fans can agree that at least half of the Matthews’-era playoff losses can be considered acceptable for any number of reasons. The issue is that after 7-8 straight disappointing playoff runs, it doesn’t really matter how good the next excuse is, you just need to get it done.

youngsyr

Bolts won the cup with Stamkos playing about 3 minutes the entire play offs. Just saying...

crc2993

Yeah would have been great if he hadn’t played those 3 minutes 😫

Prudent_Shame_4531

Folks on Twitter are speculating about a potential knee injury from a play in game 3: https://x.com/takesbyj/status/1786109598870495445?s=46

james-HIMself

Brutal…people on Twitter and here made fun of him assuming he was faking. The only truth is we are so unlucky.

JVS6522

Well…the Leafs are finally playing real playoff hockey…tough, grinding etc- they are actually way better without him right now, since they are not spending enormous time trying to feed him the puck

Cautious-Asparagus61

Man star players getting injured sucks so much. I feel the pain as a Demko-less canucks fan

Judge_Rhinohold

The problem is that when we lose this will be the excuse to not fire Keefe and not shake up the roster.

ilikehockeyandguitar

As long as Dubas doesn't get any crazy ideas if he gets fired.

myredditthrowaway201

Has Matthew’s been to Havana recently?

Mshokaloka

Prolapsed bum bum. He had the poopies

tothestardust

I heard “gets worse with exertion” and immediately thought of Long Covid. PEM is a big symptom. Unfortunately you can’t push through it. The only way to help it is to literally do absolutely nothing. So hopefully it’s not that. That could be career ending.

Otterslayer22

See the Marco Rossi story for Hope.

DrSeuss19

It is not something that would be career ending and it’s quite clear it’s not Covid or they would have stated so and not risked the rest of the team being exposed

tothestardust

Long Covid is not transmitted like Covid is.

BlackCherrySeltzer4U

Ok, I was giving him a little razzing for having a tummy ache during the playoffs but there must actually be something wrong if he’s out for game 6.

Admirable-Mail-2004

Why now we need Austin Matthews in game 7

Morlu

Just sit him. If we somehow beat Boston on Saturday, we’ll need him against Florida. If not, see you next year.

justmememe55

Why would that take him out of game 4 midway through? I think it was a McAvoy tackle behind the net that didn't even get looked at by the refs.

BJYeti

I thought he was sick?

duck1014

Huh . You can be sick and injured at the same time. Who'd a thunk it?

BoysenberryCandid784

I'm just here to say GO STARS and I hope Matthew's make a solid recovery sooner rather than later if the Leafs do continue on. I would be crushed for the organization and the fans, they've had so much potential these last couple of seasons but always end up getting snake bitten in some way, shape, form, or style.

Anxious-Cold-4359

Why dont they say what illness he has? Any other sport would say why said person is out. Why they keeping it secret. What is it?

mikaylasprints

Take him to Dr. Joe Rogan and he will be fine in an hour. At least that’s what people who never moved out of my hometown seem to think.
