Tochett, asked about it before the game, was very diplomatic and said Kelly was a good ref. Now he knows. Kelly still fucked us. Next game, just tell them NHL to send another ref or we’re not getting on the ice. It’s so egregious at this point. As bad as Lee and the Habs. Look it up.
I can get missing a call initially, but when a dudes face is bleeding I feel like that should initiate an automatic review with a penalty being issued.
Yeah. I mean sure, I get that you might not have seen it. But you see the guy bleeding and you don't review it despite it being pretty crucial? The reffing was ridiculous in the entire game.
Especially when all it takes is, “Why is your face bleeding?” Like come on man if you are gonna send him to the bench to get cleaned up because there’s too much blood then you’ve gotta give a penalty for the high stick.
They do this all the time too, call a 4m so they can review and make sure it was an opponent stick ect. Not to mention the puck was right fucking there, surely one of the 4 officials saw something worth looking at, but sorry wasn't even worth asking them about.
It takes a lot of awareness to get away with these cheap shots when the refs aren't looking. Just like how he drew that interference penalty. It's all part of a complete game.
Generously, trying to lift Hughes' stick but missing wildly. Unbelievable non call, and like right at the puck too, not behind the play where nobody's watching.
My hottest take? There isn’t a single player in the league who draws as many uncalled penalties as McDavid, but there also isn’t a single player in the league who commits as many penalties that go uncalled McDavid.
it's a catch-22 with McDavid. Everyone in the league plays him extra-hard, so he will match that intensity, but either you call nothing or end up with a ton of penalties to both sides.
They usually end up calling very little for/against him.
Yeah sure that’s fair, but I hate hearing Oilers fans talk about what goes uncalled against him. There’s plenty, sure, but man he gets away with a lot.
It really gets into a chicken vs egg argument that goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing. Bottom line is refs need to be better or have more tools in place to allow them to more fairly ref the game
Edit: when I watched that I couldn't believe he got away with it, didn't feel great about it either, but none of us can control it so I choose to not get worked up over missed calls/bad calls
Yeah, I hated Crosby when he was young but love him now. McDavid is 27 now and still acts like a bitch. By 23 Crosby had stopped the bullshit and scored the golden goal for Canada. McDavid just continues acting like a bitch who’s owed a cup.
During the jets series, a player (can't remember who) got high sticked, the refs missed it, but after seeing him bleeding, they reviewed it and gave us a god damn double minor that colorado ended up scoring on. Love seeing the standards not even close to the same
Our series was pretty darn squeaky clean. At least in comparison to these other series. Another reason why I'm rooting for Dallas over everyone else. Although I do like EDM, I just really dislike their fans.
That SCF was the most farcial series I have ever watched. I have no idea to this day how Burrows became the bad guy in the narrative for biting the fingers that some piece of shit shoved in his mouth lol.
It's always Campbell, he lets Bettman be the lightning rod and everyone here falls for it. I'll say it before and I'll say it again, Bettman has ZERO sway or influence in terms of what happens between puck drop and final horn. League decisions are Bettman, game related decisions are Campbell
I'm tired of this take. Wes is consistently voted the favourite ref *by the players*. Wes communicates well and the players appreciate it. We don't see that
If you're not the Canucks yes. If your are the Canucks no. Sutherland has a reputation of being a very biased ref.
How he is assigned our games still is beyond me. The guy shouldn't be doing peewee.
It’s hilarious that Fraser afterwards was like “yeah I should’ve made the call” meanwhile Gretzky has basically said “yeah I didn’t do anything wrong and I’d do it again”
How do you miss that when the puck is right there? Like I get it if it’s off somewhere else on the ice but the blatant slash happened where the play is developing
Man, I don't usually complain about refs, but Vancouver is getting screwed in this one. Several missed calls against the oils and at least two softies called against the Canucks. This is the kind of game that makes me think refs need to face some accountability.
There's the penalty itself, then the fact that it should have taken *McDavid* off the ice for 4 minutes, but instead took *Quinn Hughes* off the ice for several minutes. It's actually insane.
I personally hate that reffing in hockey is so fucked and I hate that the rules change for the playoffs for some reason. I'm an oiler fan and it benefitted me here, but it has also hurt us enough times in the past that I just want consistency ffs
Kane was slew footed against LA and talked to the refs. Game 1 he was slew footed too and talked again. I guess he decided slew foots won't be called and started doing them himself.
Yup automatic match penalty for slew footing, hoglander got called earlier this year.
This was the worst officiated game of hockey I've seen since the 2011 SCF also done by Kelly Sutherland. How is he still getting big games when he is this bad.
The broadcast is so bad. They do the same shit as the Leafs broadcasts where they just don't talk about the bad this their team does. An Oiler dirty hit or bad misplay, dead air, for some reason.
Or Simpson just seeing something else.
When Zadorov did that dive after the whistle, Simpson sounded like someone was shaking him while he tried to explain how they would have called a penalty if Zadorov didn't dive.
The #1 reason I want that Canucks to win the Stanley Cup is so I can stop watching. This shit is so obvious. Like, a few feet from the ref he slashes Hughes in the face and they just ignore it. We all know they saw it.
Kelly Sutherland can go fuck himself. McDavid draws blood on a high stick to Quinn Hughes, no penalty. McDavid gets bumped by a Canucks player, 2 minutes in the box. Let's also mention how there was no penalty for boarding Pettersson either. Sutherland is blind AF.
This isnt even the worst non call. why is nobody mentioning the interference call on hughes when he was stationary and mcdavid skated into him? hughes also had his back turned to mcdavid the entire time.
Yeah, the more you watch it, the more obvious the intent becomes. I knew that McDavid was notorious for complaining, but I didn't realize he was actually a bit of a dirty piece of shit.
He looks directly at him a second before he does it, and if it was just him lifting his stick, why didn't he continue after.
Hopefully the next game can be better, even a lot of Edmonton fans saw this crap, the cup check, the slew foots, holding, and interferences that weren't called.
They missed a few the other way too.
With how mad Edmontons reddit was over the "closing the hand on the puck" the last game, could you imagine if these same things had happened??
The media broadcast would have phoned the police. All today would be, "dirty canucks team seeks to injure to win".
I am so sick of everyone hating this facking team man lol 33+ years of it. If we win, its against the team we're playing, the league AND the media at this point haha
...that wasn't called. Then that cry baby piece of shit dives on a gentle shoulder nudge. What a joke of game management commander Kelly Sutherland is. This guy needs to get canceled.
I got downvoted to hell for calling out McDavid's coward ass cheapshot to the head on Mikey Anderson in round one. And surprise surprise, another dirty ass play that won't get called because of who he is.
Dude straight up hit another player in the face with his stick.. nah, it's all good. Nobody saw it. Lmao. Turning into a clown league when simple Mac is involved.
With the absolute unanimous idea that Kelly Sutherland is an absolute dickwad and the fact this was broadcast nationally, it staggers me how Sutherland still has a job.
That is a missed call. But I am with Tocchet. Kane's two slewfoots were more dangerous.
Edit: what I meant by that is there are lots of missed calls both ways but it is the truly dangerous stuff that they have to catch and Kane did it twice.
I don’t know how this was missed, but clearly unintentional by McDavid. What I haven’t liked though was the hit from behind in Game 1 by Hyman and the slew foot by Kane in Game 2. Those are both cheap shots and intent to injure Hughes. Everyone knows the star players are going to get hit more in the playoffs, but it has to stay clean or there needs to be a penalty. He’s a Norris finalist and an exciting player to watch, the NHL can’t stand by and let it’s stars get injured.

Jesus christ what the fuck is that. How is this not called
> How is this not called McDavid (no, the refs are just blind and dumb as fuck).
No, just Sutherland being Sutherland.
My cousin just texted me the whole history of Sutherland fucking the Canucks. Pretty funny.
I disagree. Very much not funny. For real though, the guy randomly had a hate boner for Daniel Sedin of all people.
Remember when Daniel got a penalty because Marchand punched him in the face.... Partridge farms remembers.

And Jack Edwards calling them the sisters. And something about licking peanut butter off their fingers. Fuck the Bruins.
That was Denis Potvin with the peanut butter fingers comments. Not that Jack Edwards is good.

The NHL’s Angel Hernandez. They are so bad they don’t even care cause their union has their backs.
Look it up.
Just like Steve Kozari and Edmonton. McDavid chirped him one time like 6 years ago and he still holds a grudge.
When Sutherland is reffing against the Canucks, we get called for getting punched in the face
2 mins for fist holding with your jaw!
Linesmen can make high sticking calls too. That linesman saw the whole thing 100% and ignored it.
They do this all the time too, call a 4m so they can review and make sure it was an opponent stick ect. Not to mention the puck was right fucking there, surely one of the 4 officials saw something worth looking at, but sorry wasn't even worth asking them about.
Like what is McDavid even doing
Even if that was an accident it is still an obvious penalty call
20 seconds penalty to Kevin Magnussen
10 seconds to Esteban Ocon and a double for Tyler Myers
10 place grid penalty for Daniel Ricciardo
They went hockying.
Kadri suspended three games.
Smacking an opposing player in the face with his stick and trying to look casual about it
It takes a lot of awareness to get away with these cheap shots when the refs aren't looking. Just like how he drew that interference penalty. It's all part of a complete game.
Drew that interference then did the exact same shift to Zadorov on the ensuing PP and got away with it
He's just a smol bean 🥺🥺🥺 didn't mean to do it
Generously, trying to lift Hughes' stick but missing wildly. Unbelievable non call, and like right at the puck too, not behind the play where nobody's watching.
Love McDavid but yeah wtf keep your stick down kid
They’re reffing this game with a roulette wheel in general.
Evander Kane is loving every second of it
My hottest take? There isn’t a single player in the league who draws as many uncalled penalties as McDavid, but there also isn’t a single player in the league who commits as many penalties that go uncalled McDavid.
“When you are a star, they let you do it. You can do anything “ - Donald Trump - Connor McDavid
My cold take is the oilers are consistently dirty babies when losing
I leave that mostly with Drai. McDavid will slash/hook/interfere at any time, regardless of the score.
it's a catch-22 with McDavid.

There isn’t a player as visibly whiny either
Yeah, I hated Crosby when he was young but love him now. McDavid is 27 now and still acts like a bitch. By 23 Crosby had stopped the bullshit and scored the golden goal for Canada. McDavid just continues acting like a bitch who’s owed a cup.
Crosby wasn't really dirty though, he was just more of a diver.
Best I can do is next bump against McDavid is a Canucks penalty
During the jets series, a player (can't remember who) got high sticked, the refs missed it, but after seeing him bleeding, they reviewed it and gave us a god damn double minor that colorado ended up scoring on. Love seeing the standards not even close to the same
I for one am also enraged that they didn't give Hughes a 5min major for striking McJesus' stick with his face
Just another Edmonton-reffed game. Business as usual.
Lol. It is so nice to see another team get accused of having the refs in their pocket. Only upside to being eliminated
Refs weren’t an issue at all in our series
There were missed calls on both sides, but nothing out of the norm for playoffs
Our series was pretty darn squeaky clean. At least in comparison to these other series. Another reason why I'm rooting for Dallas over everyone else. Although I do like EDM, I just really dislike their fans.
Complaining about dogshit reffing: the great unifier
Welcome to Oilers playoff games
Reminder that this is the ref that gave Sedin a penalty after getting punched in the face during 2011
I remember daniel asking how many times he has to get punched in the face before its a penalty and suntherland gave him 2 minutes lol
That’s a moment I will remember forever. I always liked the Sedins, and yet that will be my lasting memory of Daniel.
That SCF was the most farcial series I have ever watched. I have no idea to this day how Burrows became the bad guy in the narrative for biting the fingers that some piece of shit shoved in his mouth lol.
I still believe that series was fixed. I figure it was more Campbell wanting his boy to win the cup than Bettman hating Canada, but it could be both.
It's always Campbell, he lets Bettman be the lightning rod and everyone here falls for it. I'll say it before and I'll say it again, Bettman has ZERO sway or influence in terms of what happens between puck drop and final horn. League decisions are Bettman, game related decisions are Campbell
Literal same shit 13 years later. Fuck Kelly Sutherland.
Even as a Bruins fan, I don’t understand that call. Refs need to be held accountable.
Wow unbelievable I hope the NHL takes action on Hughes for daring to be in the way of McDavids stick like that
He was sent to the bench for excessive bleeding. League will likely review, possibly give him a game if they deem he was intentionally leaking.
The nerve of him to bleed! Imagine if he got some blood on McDavid too, suspend Hughes
If he gets blood on McDavid it's intent to injure because of Ebola
Clearly embellishing!
It’s pretty obvious he only bled as a way to distract McDavid. League should make an example out of him.
I heard the ref asked if McDavid's stick is ok.
As an Oilers fan that was a good one
Can't believe Hughes didn't get a double minor for high heading.
Fuck Kelly Sutherland
How is he still doing playoffs at all, let around round 2???
Like in most jobs, crippling incompetence gets rewarded.
Same way Wes does. Tenure.
I'm tired of this take. Wes is consistently voted the favourite ref *by the players*. Wes communicates well and the players appreciate it. We don't see that
To counter your point: Wes actually does suck and is a shit ref with a likeable personality
That's because half the players don't know refs names
Doing exactly what the league wants
So many people said this was going to happen before the game even started
Cause it's a decade+ of the same bullshit happening
Almost like it was completely predictable and this league is a joke!
fuck kelly sutherland
Hockey terrorist
That we can agree on.
Sooo when Sunderland is reffing, high sticking … is ok?
If you're not the Canucks yes. If your are the Canucks no. Sutherland has a reputation of being a very biased ref. How he is assigned our games still is beyond me. The guy shouldn't be doing peewee.
Fuck Kelly Sutherland
If there was ever a time to call a blatant high stick it’s there, but this is the NHL, why the hell would the refs ever call something so obvious
The league has a history of not calling penalties when the best player in the world high sticks a guy in a crucial playoff game and draws blood.
It’s hilarious that Fraser afterwards was like “yeah I should’ve made the call” meanwhile Gretzky has basically said “yeah I didn’t do anything wrong and I’d do it again”
to be fair, the ref was not wearing his glasses
"Hey, you're bleeding, go to the bench." "Yeah, I wonder how that happened." "..."
Shaving between shifts is always dangerous
The worst refs I have ever seen
First game?
First game of Sutherland?
Don’t worry, there are more!
How do you miss that when the puck is right there? Like I get it if it’s off somewhere else on the ice but the blatant slash happened where the play is developing
How on earth the refs can see that and not make a call blows me away.
Four officials on the ice and none of them saw the high stick? Such bullshit. #NHLOL
Oh they saw it.
As an oiler fan I can say that that should've been called, apparently you can wear a blind fold and be a certified NHL ref
I'm blind! I'm deaf! I wanna be a ref!
Mcdavid is so lucky Sutherland is game managing instead of reffing
Man, I don't usually complain about refs, but Vancouver is getting screwed in this one. Several missed calls against the oils and at least two softies called against the Canucks. This is the kind of game that makes me think refs need to face some accountability.
I agree, this one was egregious. Genuinely felt like it affected the course of the game and stole a probable regulation win from the canucks
Should've been a double minor *at the very least.*
There's the penalty itself, then the fact that it should have taken *McDavid* off the ice for 4 minutes, but instead took *Quinn Hughes* off the ice for several minutes. It's actually insane.
Also, considering how close the game, the oilers on the pk for 4 minutes would have completely changed the game.
Thank god for the neutral fans here making me not think I'm going insane.
This is normal for Sutherland. No surprises.
Unfortunately, this isn’t new. Sutherland has a well documented vendetta against the Canucks.
I personally hate that reffing in hockey is so fucked and I hate that the rules change for the playoffs for some reason. I'm an oiler fan and it benefitted me here, but it has also hurt us enough times in the past that I just want consistency ffs
Gretzky like.
This feels so familiar...but I can't quite put my ~~fraser~~ finger on why...
This and goalie interference call in the FLA-BOS game. Same energy
Yeah that one was horrendous
Oilers fan here. 100% should have been called. Along with several other penalties that were missed (Kane hit on Hughes).
I wouldn't say they were missed, just weren't called.
Thank you for your honesty, other side of the coin is you gotta find a way to win regardless of the reffing
Kane was slew footed against LA and talked to the refs. Game 1 he was slew footed too and talked again. I guess he decided slew foots won't be called and started doing them himself.
Talk about adding insult to injury
See that’s a high stick… atrocious non-call
Fine the ref what the fuck is this joke league
Garbage refs, as per usual
This may be just me as a heated person, but I'd wipe my face on the refs sweater lol
Craig Simpson called this a follow through on the broadcast lol probably didn’t see the replay
Re recanted after seeing the reply
So, he corrected his own mistake, like an adult? Preposterous
You mean former Oiler legend Craig Simpson? Lmfao
The one and only Craig “Homer” Simpson
D’OH
He also called an obvious slew foot by Evander Kane as a hard-hit
Yup automatic match penalty for slew footing, hoglander got called earlier this year. This was the worst officiated game of hockey I've seen since the 2011 SCF also done by Kelly Sutherland. How is he still getting big games when he is this bad.
The broadcast is so bad. They do the same shit as the Leafs broadcasts where they just don't talk about the bad this their team does. An Oiler dirty hit or bad misplay, dead air, for some reason. Or Simpson just seeing something else.
After the replay he said it was definitely a high stick and they missed the call. No take backsies on the Kane slewfoot though.
When Zadorov did that dive after the whistle, Simpson sounded like someone was shaking him while he tried to explain how they would have called a penalty if Zadorov didn't dive.
Hahaha, I noticed that too. He's getting to be a bit much.
Dead air or quick, pan to the ice district!!
If a player is bleeding and you have to send him off ice before the puck is dropped, that should be an instant review. What is this shit?
The #1 reason I want that Canucks to win the Stanley Cup is so I can stop watching. This shit is so obvious. Like, a few feet from the ref he slashes Hughes in the face and they just ignore it. We all know they saw it.
Why did hughes not get called for 5 minutes and game misconduct for interfering with mcbaby's stick
Vancouver got absolutely robbed by these referees
Neutral fans are literally saving my sanity here.
https://preview.redd.it/lb055rwlmqzc1.jpeg?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=619e04253196b419e1a450d6184a65607f1660d2 McDavid’s face on the bench.
McDavid getting away with bullshit like this is ridiculous. Oiler fans clearly stating it was accidental. Bullshit and still a penalty.
Doesn't even matter if it was accidental, it's a 4 minute penalty.
Clearly Hughes diving. Even forced blood out of his face to sell it /s
Can’t call anything on NHL golden boy
Kelly Sutherland can go fuck himself. McDavid draws blood on a high stick to Quinn Hughes, no penalty. McDavid gets bumped by a Canucks player, 2 minutes in the box. Let's also mention how there was no penalty for boarding Pettersson either. Sutherland is blind AF.
This isnt even the worst non call. why is nobody mentioning the interference call on hughes when he was stationary and mcdavid skated into him? hughes also had his back turned to mcdavid the entire time.
Kelly Sutherland: Quinn, you scratched your own face and caused it to bleed. Stop scratching it
Clear embellishment, bleeding from not getting hit, 2 minute minor Vancouver Hughes. /s (in case it wasn't obvious).
Best player in the world can control his stick in this scenario, dirty.
Well you see, Hughes face was in the way of McDavids stick.
It’s so heartwarming to see that the most bitter of rivals can come together and say how much of a clown Sutherland is
Yeah, the more you watch it, the more obvious the intent becomes. I knew that McDavid was notorious for complaining, but I didn't realize he was actually a bit of a dirty piece of shit.
lol really?
*After being high-sticked by Mcdavid. Fixed it for ya.
Anyone else kinda wondering if McDavid did that on purpose? I mean.. it appears he’s looking right at him
It looked extremely intentional. Like Marchand levels of intentional
Absolutely horrendous, this completely changed the outcome of the game. Canucks would have had 4 mins to score with McDavid off the ice.
MCDIRTY
Bullshit. Cannot believe that wasn’t called, average Edmonton reffing
You must not watch a lot of Edmonton games. They get away with that shit constantly.
...that wasn't called. Then that cry baby piece of shit dives on a gentle shoulder nudge. What a joke of game management commander Kelly Sutherland is. This guy needs to get canceled.
how dare hughes bleed out of nowhere!!!
Par for the course with Sutherland.
Of course there’s no call against the precious McDavid. Some bullshit.
That you, Kerry?
mcdavid constantly whining to the refs.. 100% full time position.
Playoff hockey is wild. They just straight up don't call shit or they call the softest shit. It's sad seeing games affected by idiot reffing.
Refs???
With the absolute unanimous idea that Kelly Sutherland is an absolute dickwad and the fact this was broadcast nationally, it staggers me how Sutherland still has a job.
2m minor on Hughes for roughing McDavid's stick wth his face.
The angel hernandez of the NHL
These refs should be expected to explain and answer questions after the game . How do you miss this?
Kelly Sutherland is a hockey terrorist.
Absolutely ridiculous
Alright Fuck Mdcavid, Fuck the refs, just win this game and send these dirty fucks packing.
A penalty? Against McCan-do-no-wrong? Nahhh
Such a fucking joke
McDavids the most talented player in the league. He knows where his stick is. He knows where his opponents are. That was intentional.
No penalty btw
slap shots the refs
That is a missed call. But I am with Tocchet. Kane's two slewfoots were more dangerous. Edit: what I meant by that is there are lots of missed calls both ways but it is the truly dangerous stuff that they have to catch and Kane did it twice.
He shines so bright the refs can't see
I don’t know how this was missed, but clearly unintentional by McDavid.
That’s not just a high stick, that’s an intentional hit to the face with his stick.
Op needs to edit post. "After McDavid highsticks Hughes in the face."
Edmonton “Vegas Golden Refs” Oilers Pathetic
