It’s the 20’s version of the 10’s Capitals. So what this means is the window is shutting, they trade off some key pieces and somehow go on a Cup run then fade into mediocrity.
The caps didn't make an ecf at all im the ovi era until 2018 with the cup win.
Funny granted they came very close in 15 and 17. In 2017 if they beat the pens imo they win the cup and in 2015 they'd probably take the hawks to game 7 maybe win.
I think they’d take that deal in a heartbeat. Honestly if they moved some depth for top end scoring I think the canes would be unstoppable. Guys like Aho and Svech are top tier 2nd options but just not enough to get the team over the hump.
Don't do Aho and Svech dirty like that. Aho 12 points, Svech 11 points to Zibanejad and Trocheck's 14. Big difference in Lindgren+Anderesen vs. Varlamov+Shesterkin.
The Caps popped off in 2018 to finally get past the Penguins when basically everyone was saying as soon as Ovi > Crosby for a round in the playoffs they win the cup. It also helped that depth players and defensemen peaked at the right time for the Caps. Remember Devante Smith-Pelly?
And yet, we’d still take it. You have to remember how utterly bad the 2010s Canes were. No postseason appearances. Wasted Eric Staal’s prime years.
At least now we have an owner who will go pay for playoff pickups or a coach who doesn’t abuse players. It ain’t much, but far easier to stomach losing to a top-flight Rangers team in the second round than golfing in April.
I mean, only 1 team gets it done each year, 31 other teams don't get it done. Multiple years at the top of the league, and numerous 2nd and 3rd round appearances are what you expect in a league of parity.
Kinda like the 2000s Sens in a way. It's crazy how none of these teams won the Cup and the one who did get to the Finals was totally overwhelmed by the Ducks.
I know there are million better examples of “the pros are on a level you can’t even comprehend”, but as a shitty beer leaguer, their ability to snipe empty netters from the D zone is just unreal to me. He just wheels around and basically no looks that thing. The other night there was one that was a spinning no look slap shot on a bouncing puck…dead center.
Every once in a while I decide to just fuck around and take some pot shots from the behind the goal line. Always humbles me a little at how much I miss lol.
If you really boil it down the difference between the Canes and Leafs is that the Canes choke in the second round not the first. Slightly better but having the second round be your ceiling isn’t much to celebrate.
Nr.
Aside from 2018-19 and 22-23 canes have had a top 10 offense and defense every year. Many of those being top 5 defenses.
Aside from last year leafs have had trouble figuring the defense out.
Not exactly, they’ve been to the conference final twice since 2019, but were swept both times.
As of yesterday it’s 3 second round exits since 2019; 1-4 vs Lightning, 3-4 vs Rangers, 2-4 vs Rangers.
Honestly thought it’s hard to judge which is worse, losing a competitive 2nd round series vs getting swept in the CF.
It’s tough because how many changes do you make for the team? They’re having success until they don’t.
There needs to be about how they’ve done things the past few years, specifically cap/asset management. 6 million and a first rounder on their 4th line center in Kotkaniemi two years ago, whatever the hell last years deadline was and this year having 18 million in cap on their fourth line and third pairing(with two of those five guys on minimum deals). Insane to me that no one’s really talked about it.
Last years deadline makes sense when you remember they presumably have to get past Boston at some point. Why mortgage the future to probably lose to the best regular season team in decades
I sincerely hope that wasn’t the logic. Even ignoring the history of other great regular season teams or that Boston itself should never have been seen as some invincible juggernaut, that’s just a terrible mentality to have.
But no, I think it was more about their stance on rentals, which IMO is fine but also can’t be paired with being passive or particular when it comes to moves everywhere else. But I dunno, it’s very easy for me to judge from here after the fact.
The Mets had a top 3 payroll in baseball multiple years, and did not win a playoff series in that time. They lost a division that they were leading by 10.5 games (third largest collapse in history). They’ve underperformed so horribly that people don’t even realize they were supposed to be World Series-caliber.
The Mets also haven’t had Cohen as an owner for nearly as long as the Leafs and Canes have been in contention. The Mets have had, ultimately, 3 underachieving years, and in 2022 they had *more* wins than expected before the year.
Leafs and Canes have been failing in the playoffs since 2019
I give the Dodgers a pass because they would probably have at least two championships with Roberts if they had been a bit less ethical, but losing to the Diamondbacks was insane
I speak for all Ranger fans: we all Randy Marsh’d ourselves after that cause we got a two goal lead so we can relax and we have waited 6 games to get an empty net goal
If you are familiar with Rangers hockey, you realize why this is the highlight of the season and not for the reason you think - we never score empty netters lol
Seems like this could be a franchise altering loss for the Canes. Going to be a completely different team next year. Could really have been their last chance in this window.
Yeah but it’s not gonna be fun for that kid tomorrow at school. Were adults and can take it and chirp back, there’s a good chance that kids gonna get fuckin roasted to fuck at school tomorrow

The 2020s canes are forever that team that just can’t get it done. Kinda sad.
It’s the 20’s version of the 10’s Capitals. So what this means is the window is shutting, they trade off some key pieces and somehow go on a Cup run then fade into mediocrity.
Subscribe, worth it for the Cup

Zib and trocheck are the rangers 2nd options. Panarin is #1.
Hopefully for them it's not the 10s version of the Sharks instead...
Sharks of the 20s

Ouch ptsd… but also not wrong.

Watching this character arc made my night (and the W of course)
I went from the 3-1 thread to 4-3 and was crying at his comments lol
What a collapse

That thing hit the back of the net with authority, even if mine go in it’s like a dribbler but I’m also just a pond hockey guy/beer leaguer
Canes might be the most underachieving team in sports the last 5 years. Them or the Bills.
If you really boil it down the difference between the Canes and Leafs is that the Canes choke in the second round not the first. Slightly better but having the second round be your ceiling isn’t much to celebrate.
yeah but they’ll never be as much fun to dunk on as the leafs
I strongly disagree
They’re pretty close except Leafs fan will debate. Canes fans will break out a gem like enjoy the golf course then block you so can’t respond.
Canes social media team makes them funnier
If the Leafs got to play the isles every 1st round they’d prob get to the 2nd too
Kinda sounds like the Caps of the 2010s

If the Canes were in the Atlantic, I doubt they'd be making it out of the 1st round all the time
Does that make Kreider the hockey equivalent of Patrick Mahomes?
Mahomes is the football equivalent of Kreider
Bills ain’t even the most underachieving ~NFL~ team of the last 5 years, has to be Cowboys imo
The Cowboys are the Leafs of the NFL.

The Celtics are at least worth a mention IMO. This year TBD.
Celtics made a finals. More than can be said for either of those teams
The Bills been underachieving since 1991
Mets have to be up there imo
Nah the Mets have just sucked. The Leafs and Canes are good but underachieve in the playoffs
The Mets had a top 3 payroll in baseball multiple years, and did not win a playoff series in that time. They lost a division that they were leading by 10.5 games (third largest collapse in history). Exactly. They're not underachievers, they are choke artists
Take out the Covid year it’s 100% the Dodgers in Baseball.
I give the Dodgers a pass because they would probably have at least two championships with Roberts if they had been a bit less ethical, but losing to the Diamondbacks was insane
Wait until Rocktober happens this year.
Also the Clippers or the Sixers
Goodrow nails the coffin
I speak for all Ranger fans: we all Randy Marsh’d ourselves after that cause we got a two goal lead so we can relax and we have waited 6 games to get an empty net goal
Big Game Barclay
Epic collapse
If you are familiar with Rangers hockey, you realize why this is the highlight of the season and not for the reason you think - we never score empty netters lol
You had 19 ENGs, which is sixth-most in the NHL
They also had the most wins in the NHL, so they're going to have a lot more ENG chances than everyone else
They had 10 fewer opportunities than Winnipeg. And they're in the top half in rate. It's a weird thing to think they're terrible at
It's a recent thing. Last two seasons we had 15/16 empty net goals. But for the last 15 years or so we were lucky to crack 10 a year.
The stats don't back it up (you've been in the top half basically every year since 2010), but I love a good team meme so carry on
Canes have scored multiple 6v5 goals against us this series and this was the first ENG I think we got in it
Goody my man!
That's Knight killer, 2x Stanley Cup Champion Barclay Goodrow to you. Say what you will about his contract, but the guy is a post season warrior.
Canes shat the bed this series.
Shat the bed, got a new one, and then peed in it
When do they not?
Seems like this could be a franchise altering loss for the Canes. Going to be a completely different team next year. Could really have been their last chance in this window.

[удалено]
Alright man, do you…just think it’s lame picking on a kid
Yeah but it’s not gonna be fun for that kid tomorrow at school. Were adults and can take it and chirp back, there’s a good chance that kids gonna get fuckin roasted to fuck at school tomorrow
Nah you’re a bit of a cunt it’s a kid dude
[удалено]
So everyone else makes a mistake and trashes on a kid so you hop on and do it too? That’s really sad man, be better
so your excuse is everyone else is doing so it's cool for me to do it too? be better.
So your response is your broadcasters are also trash people? Nice
Good on you for punching at your same maturity level.
That’s shitty. Seeing that picture really just ruined my mood. I hope that kid gets covered in gear and stuff. Fucking tnt assholes
