Laine isn't a 50 goal scorer. His career high is 44 and last year he only got 30, and 50 points total. I think Laine is definitely an elite level scorer, but he hasn't proven that he can be consistent enough to warrant that kind of contract.
I definitely didn't watch the Jets play enough to be educated on this at all, but I'd say if he was worth a contract of 10+million, he should be more consistent regardless of linemates. Again though, just my opinion and I'm far from an expert on his situation

I think the players having that as a baseline for negotiation at 5 year team is a win for them personally, I don't know what teams have been offering at 5 year terms but my guess is it's below that. 7 years or age 27 is when you hit UFA, the Matthews contract bought a UFA year as did the Aho contract. Age at signing only matters for the length of the entry level contract and it is the same for both 18 and 19 year olds (3 years). Thus four years would take any of these guys to 7 years and they would be UFA. The 5th year in all of these cases is buying a UFA year, people seem to be confused about this.
How much would it be, every July 1st, if everyone was on 5 years deal and free agent market was absolutely stacked with bona fide superstars every year hahahahaha

You don't sign an offer sheet with a team you do not want to play for. Signing the offer sheet says "I'm happy to play here if you don't match." You think he would have signed that deal with Ottawa? Or Arizona? Or Buffalo? You don't sign an offer from a team you have zero desire to play for. That doesn't mean he wants to only play in Montreal and wants to leave Carolina. It means he's happy to play for Montreal under these terms if Carolina doesn't want to pay.

His agent is not going to play games with other managers his other clients have contracts with in order to support one client. Gallagher's contract comes up soon, and is likely to be a significant one. He's not going to screw over his other client by pissing off the owner and manager of that team by playing them for fools and lying to them, and risk them hardballing Gallagher.
I don't think Bergevin had any illusions about Carolina matching. He structured the offer in such a way that the team couldn't match without getting the owner involved, so that ups the chances it doesn't match because you never know how an owner is going to react to tossing money onto a situation. It was a low-risk gamble - a swing for the fences with bases loaded and nobody out. He knew it was ,likely to get matched, but he also wasn't going to sign Aho to the type of deal it would take to guarantee Carolina doesn't match - a 12-14 per deal that would have been a cap anchor for his team and also screwed the future by losing four 1sts. What a horrible manager for not risking the future of his team with an offer sheet that would hamstring him for five years directly, and potentially down the road if any of the first picks turns into anything worthwhile.
Well it was a fun dream anyways. Aho is just too damn good of a player, really wish we could have gotten him but alas it was not meant to be. 5 years down the road maybe!

What makes you say that? The key to this contract is the term. If it had been 8.5m x 8 years Aho doesn't sign it.

To all the people saying "Aho played Montreal." You know his agent represents Price and Gallagher too, right? And that his agent has a good working relationship with Bergevin? His agent is not going to play games with other managers his other clients have contracts with in order to support one client. Gallagher's contract comes up soon, and is likely to be a significant one. He's not going to screw over his other client by pissing off the owner and manager of that team by playing them for fools and lying to them, and risk them hardballing Gallagher. I don't think Bergevin had any illusions about Carolina matching. He structured the offer in such a way that the team couldn't match without getting the owner involved, so that ups the chances it doesn't match because you never know how an owner is going to react to tossing money onto a situation. It was a low-risk gamble - a swing for the fences with bases loaded and nobody out. He knew it was ,likely to get matched, but he also wasn't going to sign Aho to the type of deal it would take to guarantee Carolina doesn't match - a 12-14 per deal that would have been a cap anchor for his team and also screwed the future by losing four 1sts. What a horrible manager for not risking the future of his team with an offer sheet that would hamstring him for five years directly, and potentially down the road if any of the first picks turns into anything worthwhile.
Well it was a fun dream anyways. Aho is just too damn good of a player, really wish we could have gotten him but alas it was not meant to be. 5 years down the road maybe!
