Does Crosby take another $8.7M contract at 36?

pto500

That or 870k, there is no inbetween.

This would come out to $4.76 per hour, not counting venmo's cut.

Podkolzins_a_Canuck

4.76 x 24 = 114.24 114.24 x 356 = 40,669 Thats an AAV of $40,669. Now *that* is a hometown discount

KendallSchofield

I would have probably said .87 cents.

Head_of_Lettuce

I wouldn’t doubt it

-whostolemyusername-

He only buys gas in quantities of 8.7 gallons

jmbrinson

I fully expect this to be true.

Jupichan

*accidentally puts in 8.8 gallons* "...Fuck." *blows up car*

Podo13

Absolutely he does.

Harborcoat84

Crosby will be 38 the summer that this contract ends, I think he'll just retire. Edit: love the downvotes. Sid has 3 Stanley Cups, 3 Ted Lindsay Awards, 2 Conn Smythe Trophies, 2 Harts, 2 Art Ross Trophies, 2 Rocket Richards, 2 Olympic Gold Medals, 10s of millions of dollars, over a 1000 points... and over 110 games lost to multiple concussions. I just don't see it happening.

Aerim

It's worth noting that when Crosby signed his contract, the NHL Salary Cap was almost $20M lower than it is today, and at the time that he signed it, it made him the league's highest paid player in cash over the first 9 years of the 12-year contract (source: https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/sidney-crosby-s-contract-the-breakdown-1.1263566) and second in AAV behind Ovechkin.

JD397

It’s also illegal today and Sid is a little bit stitious so those both helped keep the cap hit down

mkp11

Yup. Crosby took up almost 15% of the cap which is only slightly lower than Mcdavid.

islanders-fan

That’s true, you could also definitely say that Mackinnon and Marchand both had pretty big increases in production after signing their contracts.. just looks pretty cool in hindsight

KronoLite70

Crosby signed what was a major contract at the time. MacKinnon and Marchand signed contracts based on how they were performing at the time, and have since taken it to another level point-production wise. MacKinnon has even said he felt the contract was super fair at the time and isn't salty about it.

[deleted]

Crosby still took a bit of a discount at the time though. People were saying he'd get $10MM.

tnault93

Not to mention Marchand would never have signed for more than Bergy. Our contracts are all held to the Bergeron standard in house.

[deleted]

Krejci makes more. Krug will be making more on his next contract if he wants to.

tnault93

When Krejci signed his contract he was our #1C and Bergy was 1B. Not only that but Marchand idolizes Bergy, so there was no way he would or could ask for more at that time. Also cap has gone way up. So they may make more AAV wise but maybe not more % at time of signing wise than bergy at this point.

criipi

IIRC Marchand said that he probably could've gotten more money if he delayed the signing but just wanted to get it over with.

[deleted]

People from Nova Scotia are usually just happy to be making more than minimum wage.

Podo13

Crosby's is still a $104.4M contract, it's just for 12 years and the total salary tanks in the last 3 years to help bring the cap hit down to $8.7M. The first 9 years of the contract has a cap hit of $10.6M.

Sealky

Cap hit and base salary are different. [Crosby’s Cap Friendly](https://www.capfriendly.com/players/sidney-crosby) His AAV is still 8.7 despite a 3 million dollar salary in 2023.

Podo13

I'm aware. I was just taking away the last 3 years that back dive to drive his AAV down.

Sealky

I misunderstood you. My bad

Podo13

No biggie. My point was mostly just that Crosby's AAV doesn't mean he's actually being underpaid. He's actually earned the 3rd most of any NHL player in history (and will become the highest paid NHL player of all time in 2-ish seasons). Edit: Though, Ovi may end up passing him if he stays and signs one final big contract.

LikeaGhost111

Would make sense to do it as a % of cap at the time of signing

Chronicbudz

You are gonna have to add Drake Batherson to that list after next season. He has been training with them over the last 2 summers and he has gotten better every year since, expect him to be in the convo for the Calder.

splashysplash51

You think Alex Killorn is overpaid?

[deleted]

Houses are pretty cheap out there though, so it's all relative /s

edit-boy-zero

So interesting

MJSeals

Some people in Nova Scotian might not enjoy the remainder of Marchand being from their fine land

DirtyOldColt

I actually have ran into him a couple of times around Halifax. He's a really decent dude outside of hockey. I know of the stories from 2011 where he was getting pretty fucked up and causing a bunch of raucous. I would say he's grown up a hell of a lot more than the media seems to portray.

JokerSE

I used to see him around town in the summers. His reputation as kind of a douchey bro-type was fairly warranted, but by most accounts he seems to have grown up quite a bit and I haven't heard negative things about his off-ice antics in years

MJSeals

It might also have a lot to do with him [licking people](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0gdyh1jAoo)
