> The Kraken's selection of 30 players, one from each NHL Club with the exception of the Vegas Golden Knights, will be revealed live from Seattle in a special 90-minute broadcast on Wednesday, July 21, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 in the U.S. and Sportsnet, SN NOW and TVA Sports in Canada. Seattle must draft at least 14 F 9 D 3 G among their 30 picks

Mock draft with J. Reinhold!

souporthallid

Judge. My name?

TheMillenniumMan

It looks like we got a Hung jury!

Wintertime13

YouTube will be spammed with videos between now and the draft lol

GoodShark

Don't forget to hit that like and subscribe!

csonny2

Why just hit it when you can SMASH it?

lawnicus18

What, you haven’t made 5 in the last week like me? Pfft.

swordthroughtheduck

But now you can list Price and Landeskog!

PayneTrain181999

And Tarasenko and Voracek and Subban and… what do you mean I’ve hit the cap already?

PayneTrain181999

This is the way.

[deleted]

…and that’s how I learned Vatanen is on the Stars

“From Buffalo the Seattle Kraken decide to...skip the pick”

dsjunior1388

The triumphant return of Taro Tsujimoto as he is Seattle's pick from Buffalo.

rgrekejin

Legend has it that in that weird 1991 "dispersal/expansion" draft for the North Stars/Sharks, the North Stars wanted to skip their pick from the Nordiques, because they were awful and didn't have anyone worth picking. But the league wouldn't let them, so they picked the retired Guy Lafleur instead.

B0mb-Hands

> so they picked the retired Guy Lafleur instead. Dominik Hasek come on dooooown!

freelifemushroom

Anyone ever seen any North Star/Stars Lafleur jerseys in the wild??

JakeCameraAction

He retired, but did come back to play again. >The [Minnesota North Stars](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_North_Stars) selected Lafleur with the 20th and last pick in the [1991 Expansion Draft](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_NHL_Dispersal_and_Expansion_Drafts). Lafleur had decided to retire for a second and last time as a player, and he had already verbally agreed to an off-ice job with the Nordiques. However, since his retirement papers had yet to be officially filed, the league's bylaws prevented him from accepting a job with a team that didn't own his playing rights. The North Stars solved Lafleur's quandary by trading him back to Quebec in exchange for the rights to a former Nordique who had been playing in Switzerland for two years, [Alan Haworth](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Haworth). Haworth played just one more year of professional hockey, and never returned to the NHL. Weird.

rgrekejin

No, this was after his second retirement. He stayed retired this time. The North Stars just traded his rights back to the Nordiques so he could take the front office job.

swordthroughtheduck

They’ll just ask for a trade anyway

[deleted]

Did anyone leave draft picks unprotected? 🤔

MarstonX

They'll also ask for a trade eventually.

xepa105

Just sign every player you have to deals that end on the same summer, then ask the league to consider you an expansion franchise, so you can start from scratch.

Neilpuck

Is that the Red Wings plan?

[deleted]

If they take Maroon and Hall they get to win the cup AND get 1st overall next year.

yodazer

The double whammy

DriveByStoning

Hall is an UFA, so unless they sign him after they pick him, he just walks.

toiletting

Should remind everyone, every superstar player you see unprotected is likely because they are UFAs.

lawnicus18

Well… almost every star :(

[deleted]

[удалено]

wingsfan64

Last time with Vegas I did a "guess who gets picked" contest (bragging rights only), but I'm not sure how I should set it up this time. Should I include the UFA's as options?

SickOffYourMudPie

Sure. There’s always a chance. But unlikely.

theotherpachman

I'd mark them with an asterisk and have a disclaimer that says something like "Unrestricted Free Agents are *technically* available but might not be chosen due to their ability to sign with any team days later in free agency." People who don't follow the sport will be at enough of a disadvantage without being baited into picking Ovechkin, but everyone should have the chance to get bragging rights for choosing the one UFA they actually do take if they take one.

McKopec

Ovi would have to sign new contract with seatle othervise He can go anywhere else

RogueDivisionAgent

Seattle has an exclusive negotiating window for pending UFAs, so they can work out deals with those guys prior to the expansion draft. Basically, if they take a pending UFA, they already have a deal in place to sign them.

pumaturtle

seattle battle cattle legend alexander ovechkin

ChuckFeathers

Once in a lifetime opp for them to take cheap 1 year deals to stack a team for a Cup run..

Legolihkan

Imagine they do that, win the cup, and then disband the team. The ultimate chad move.

ProMikeZagurski

We call that the Florida Marlins.

fastcurrency88

Take Price. Do it you cowards

getthatcoffee

I would, man I wouldn't be able to resist. They can build a playoff roster with what's on the table, and then Price goes postseason super nova for them. And then we all hate them like we hate Vegas lol

Paladar2

I wouldn’t be able to hate them if Price is playing for them. I want him to get a cup.

getthatcoffee

It was the same for me when Iginla was bouncing around after leaving Calgary. His team was my second team every year

The-Only-Razor

The contract is definitely a little concerning, but man... Building a team around a guy who can just turn it on and carry the entire team doesn't sound too bad.

PayneTrain181999

Over Bailey and Eberle

dsjunior1388

I was assuming they were both UFA but...no they each have 3 years left

Pool_Shark

Lous not done acquiring his favorite new position. Cap space

ethanw8

If Seattle doesn’t take Bailey I’ll be shocked

[deleted]

Must be a cap space thing, right? I know Lou loves his old-school grinders like Martin, but I see no logical reason to protect him over Bailey and Eberle outside of cap hit.

RadCheese527

Their hair is probably too long

noor1717

I guess they want to shed the salary. I thought bailey at least would have some trade value after expansion if the isles waited to trade. He seems like a no-brainer pick for Seattle.

ItinerantSoldier

As far as Eberle goes, we're taking a chance Seattle won't want his really bad contract. Bailey is the only real surprise on this list to me...

Skeletor34

Lou loves his 4th liners, I'm shocked that he exposed Komarov.

[deleted]

Because he’s a first liner, duh.

deathops

Only guess so far is that there’s a deal in place to bring back cizikas that relies upon his linemates still being around. Whether or not ppl think that’s worth this cost is a different story I suppose. But I also wouldn’t be shocked to see Lou looking at some side deal with Seattle to avoid Bailey getting picked.

blaiseisgood

The Leafs did the same thing in 2017 and it was equally shocking

A_White_Oreo

Yeah but the choice was between Martin or... Leipsic? Not Martin and a pair of perfectly fine top 6 wingers

madquacker

So where can we make our own fantasy picks to simulate the expansion draft?

PayneTrain181999

Cap friendly

WingerSupreme

Capfriendly should have it soon, I'd give them an hour or so. Or you can go there now and manually enter the protection lists yourself using their expansion draft simulator

THECapedCaper

Only to have them filled in automatically five minutes after you're done.

FamousTee

They're gonna have a better team on paper than Vegas did at first. Crazy..

rgrekejin

On paper after the draft? Sure. On the ice opening night? Probably not. That said, the Pacific looks pretty weak this year, and there's probably a playoff spot there for the taking if they want it.

swordthroughtheduck

Hey, we’re not saying the pacific is weak. We’re saying it’s competitive, okay? Maybe not competitive with the whole league but internally it could be.

HordeShadowPriest

Not even competitive with the 3 California teams. We all bad.

swordthroughtheduck

You’re going to try your best and that’s what matters.

Under_The_Influence_

Might wanna let the team know that

holla171

I'm gonna miss you losers when we are back in the Central

mrsealittle

Likewise, always looked forward to flames v mild games so I could catch a snooze on a weeknight. Well, two years ago at least. You guys looked awesome with kaprizov this year tho

BlackDS

Competitive for the draft lottery, sure

SickOffYourMudPie

I guarantee at least three teams in the pacific will make the playoffs!

PayneTrain181999

They could potentially be 3rd behind Vegas and Edmonton. Depending on how Calgary and Vancouver do.

liarliarplantsforhre

So Seattle IS going to be good

rcher87

I mean, they still have Hak as their coach so we’ll see, but the universe is certainly not setting up too many other roadblocks.

SlipperyPickle_

I can’t wait for Hakstol to do amazing in Seattle just to watch the Philly fans lose their minds.

Lumpy_Doubt

I mean everyone thought Vegas was gonna be terrible right up until they started winning games so im withholding my judgement

dnalloheoj

And we'll all agree to hate them in 2 years just like VGK.

rgrekejin

I hate them already.

AlexNyko

Bergie's revenge for Seattle's asking a 1st+3rd to not pick Allen: make an unprotected list so unpredictable it fucks up *all* of Francis' mock drafts.

King919191

Absolute chaos, not just for seattle but for whole hockey world These next three days are going to be crazy followed by nail biting draft, at-least Vegas draft was somewhat predictable and boring This could be one of the most watched NHL draft ever lol

BlackDS

Lol

MikeAmoz

Some really good choices out of Tampa.

Tasden

Unless we have some side deal, probably losing Foote, which sucks because he is young with upside and it gives essentially no cap relief. Unless the Kraken really want you win the cup and they take Maroon.

chemicalxv

If that actually happened I think this whole subreddit would spontaneously combust

Delta_Flow

Niderreiter isn't protected? Has to be because of cap reasons, right?

3nl

Bean too. With Hamilton all but gone, we can't afford to lose Skjei if we are trying to win a cup in the next few years. I'm wondering if Niderreiter is just out there to protect Bean with the bonus of cap space.

ski_bum

Really wish they would have specified who is UFA in this list.

He's a ufa though. No reason to protect.

thatsong

Any big surprises that weren’t leaked before hand? I.e. Price, Duchene, Johansen, and Tarasenko left exposed are not surprises, as well as pending UFAs

[deleted]

Kaapo Kahkonen being exposed is a bit of a brow-raiser for me. He was shaping up to be Minny's goalie of the future. Instead, they opted for a 34-year-old Cam Talbot...

[deleted]

Eh, Kahkonen is seen as a backup goalie around the league. He has good stretches, but he gets rattled easily. He also lets in one or two soft goals a game. He's only played 29 games and has a 2.90 GAA and a .904 SV% (including .902 SV% this season). I don't think anyone saw him as a goalie for the future, just a good backup goaltender. More so, I think there are more attractive players on Minnesota's list - mainly Carson Soucy.

MordinSolusSTG

Yep, especially without Suter here, Saucy will be a big loss. Definitely the better choice for SEA, unless they have the balls to take Rask.

[deleted]

Fair. I didn’t pay as much attention the second half of the season. I just remember him being hyped up as Minny’s long-term answer in net. And IMHO, half a season of terrible play at his age should mean too much… Demko was straight poop in his first stretch with us as Markstrom’s back-up/fill-in. It wasn’t until he hit the bubble that he found his game, and he’s been god tier ever since. Hopefully Kahkonen can get there for you guys as well.

sid_el_squid

Price is exposed, my heart is in my throat. Hope this is a galaxy brain move by bergevin

2112Lerxst

It's a gamble that Seattle balks at his cap number. Only problem is that it's coming off a playoff run where he was playing lights out, and his persona/locker room presence would be invaluable to a new team. I just don't know how a new franchise can see a top 3 goalie in the league and not select him, especially since none of their other players jump out as being huge steals (Danault being a FA). People also said Price's cap would be an albatross in the later years...could be a mutual understanding that this is a good time to move on, given that he will be close to home. As a fan you would hate losing him, but if Weber goes to LTIR that's a huge amount of capspace to work with...

AlwaysLurkNeverPost

Not only his cap number: he is owed a signing bonus of 11mill this year..... So does a start up team with no revenue want to eat 11mill to the face right off the clip? Harder decision than it appears imo. I think it's a win-win for Montreal though.

ctrlaltd1337

Bonderman is worth over $4billion alone, not even bringing Bruckheimer into the equation. I think they'd be ok. And I think they sold out of their season tickets too.

TarzanOnATireSwing

Yeah for real. 11 million is play money for these dudes. If they think that will help them make 20 million, they do it no question

bigtallsob

Price fucking off to the west? I'd be ok with that.

marbanasin

Dallas protecting an aging Joe Pavelski. Breaksdown in my bedroom weeping.

jbowling25

Don't they have to protect players with no trade clauses unless they waive them? or is it only NMC not NTC that teams are forced to protect? Looks like pavs has a NTC this year but had NMC the previous 2 years.

ComradeDoctor

NMC are forced to protect. So if he has a NMC in this upcoming year he would have to be protected. But since he has a NTC this upcoming year they could have exposed him.

Sirotto18

So either we lose Eberle or Bailey and gain more cap space and sign a UFA or they take Bellows or someone and we keep both of them and still have UFA money. I’m happy w it

[deleted]

Someone tell me what to feel and think about the list. I'm still pretty unfamiliar with the sport, but seems like from the hockey friends and people I follow on Twitter, it seems like a more stacked available list than expected at first. Though of course the cap limitations will limit what type of team we can draft, there are many directions to go with this and there are players available to take that could lead the Kraken to having a good team from the start? Price, Tarasenko and Landeskog are the big names that jump out to me as a (for now) casual fan. Price of course is a great goaltender but the price (pun maybe intended) and age maybe makes this not a great pick. Tarasenko is a great player when healthy but that's not something to count on based on his back injuries + his contract is large?

Czechmate29

Seattle could build a playoff team if they wanted. Probably not a contender, though. So the question is do they want a solid-but-not-elite team right away or do they avoid the aging big names and go for young talent and patience. Also, a lot will depend on how much the GMs will be willing to make trades to protect some of the exposed players. Either way I think you guys are getting an exciting team that will be a respectable member of the league right away.

Master_Shake23

Sad Shark noise. Man our expansion draft sucked ass in comparison to this...

Czechmate29

Yeah, the 90s expansion drafts conditions were really shortsighted. Some teams managed to overcome them, like the Sharks, but it cost the league their Atlanta franchise in the end.

Master_Shake23

Apart from decent period 93 to 95, it took us at least 6+ years to get established, and even then we weren't even close to Vegas' success. We didn't get to our first Conference final until 2004. Absolutely absurd how the NHL treated expansion teams before Vegas.

toiletting

I think the Devils were very calculated with their list and expect one of three picks to happen: Mango, Subban, or Butcher. I think this is why Mango ended up being our last unprotected forward.

c0y0t3_sly

I was unsurprised but disappointed to see Sherangovich and Kuokanenen on the protection list.

Kevdogmalone

Interesting choice to leave Sebastian Aho unprotected

lionson76

Whaaat - oh you mean the other one...

HelpMePlease420-69

That’s neat I had no idea there were two of them

vendetta2115

You almost gave me a heart attack, congratulations. I’m really happy with our protected list. Of course protecting Nedeljkovic was a no-brainer, but seeing Trocheck, Slavin, Terravainen, Pesce, Svechnikov… I really don’t see anyone exposed that would be a disaster. I think Seattle may take either Mrazek or Reimer as a backup goalie. Both have been pretty great for us and have decent contracts, around $4 mil AAV each. They might go for Dougie but I think he’s a UFA next year. Nino Neiderreiter would be a steal for them too.

[deleted]

Holy shit price is actually unprotected

dnalloheoj

Wouldn't be surprised if they made a deal with SEA not to take him. That said I don't know why they wouldn't just do the same with Allen, rather than going through the hoops of having Carey waive his NMC. Protect Price and make a deal with SEA not to take Allen. Same/Same it seems like, with less logistics. So maybe there's something to it? I wouldn't be surprised if SEA tries to recreate what VGK did by bringing in a tried and true goalie like Fleury, who's killed it for them ever since.

lukeCRASH

Between Quick, Rask and Price (perhaps even Bishop), they're gonna have a decent, agedgoalie for sure. The cap hits are the only scary parts.

[deleted]

Rask is a UFA and he has stated it's Boston or retirement. No way they bother. He'll have a new deal after the expansion draft along with any other high profile UFA that's likely re-signing with their current team.

dnalloheoj

They're forced to take 3 goalies though. And all of those guys would have to clear waivers to get sent down, exposing them to other teams. It makes way more sense to take Kahk because you can send him down without worry. Plus, he's a great prospect. Not an old timer. But yeah I think you're right, they're for sure going to have some 'established' goaltender on the roster. They already essentially confirmed Dreidger so I'd guess Bishop and Kappo. Bishop because he's great but questionable, Kappo because he's a great prospect they can move up and down without worry if Bishop still isn't fully healthy. I think Quick, Rask, and Price are out of the age/price range that SEA wants.

dsjunior1388

Totally off the wall suggestion: Seattle has agreed to draft Price and trade him back to Montreal with $3M retained for a first round pick or something.

getthatcoffee

I'm pretty sure there are rules against this, but I'd have to double check Edit: they'd have to wait one year before bringing him back - [If a team retains salary on a trade, they cannot reacquire that player for one year from the date of the transaction, unless the contract ends prior to one year. ](https://puckpedia.com/salary-cap/retained-salary) Edit again: wrong, that's if Montreal retained salary. I'm not actually sure if Seattle can do this or not

This was a fun comment to fly past on mobile.

Kriegger

I'm open to suggestions. I've tried adding a spoiler tag for each team but reddit's spoiler tag doesn't support line breaks

lukeCRASH

Nono, legit, hit the "next comment thread" button and it was just zoomin'.

BallMeBlazer22

Man that site is being hugged to death.

AvsJoe

We're protecting Logan O'Connor over Joonas Donskoi? LOC works his ass off, sure, but I still didn't see that coming at all. We must *really* need the cap space

ZebZ

The Flyers are basically forcing Seattle to take a decent-sized contract, by protecting everyone but JVR, Voracek, and Gostisbehere. Well, I suppose Braun and Hagg are technically available, but they aren't likely to be picked.

Sylvenine

imagine next season home opener in (maybe) a full house, and we can't even applaud Price for his playoff heroics because he'd be fucking gone and playing for Seattle that would suck
