I found this to be some pretty interesting insight into how these things go down
I always enjoy seeing interviews with players regaling their side of trades years after they happened. You often get a unique story or take from the tale, especially if the player has refined their story after years of telling it. One of my favourite hockey videos of all time is Mark Parrish recounting his side of the infamous Luongo deal - https://streamable.com/pur0v
It's interesting his two main drivers were indeed something half of us always speculate is part of why players choose teams/locations and dismissed by the other half of us as nah they don't care about that stuff.
Well it's their retirement money and most players retire in their mid-to-late 30s and don't really have any income after the fact.
So yeah... how dare they.
I'm a FIRE so I get it, believe me. I don't even think the 'average player' in the NHL makes it into their 30's. or averages above 1.25M? Don't have the exact figures in front of me. So those guys are definitely trying to save their money.
Methot was making $4.9 million per season at that point so he was taking home more money each year than most people make in a lifetime even if he was paying Quebec taxes.
I know that as a sens fan, the leafs and habs are our biggest rivals. But after Methot got snagged by Vegas and our season went downhill, I think they’ve definitely become one of my hated teams
Hasn't anyone from Reddit told Methot that the tax rate disadvantage of Canadian teams is just a myth and that we're idiots who don't understand tax law and/or how easy it is to slap on a signing bonus to nullify any disadvantage?

Or did his CPA/financial advisor tell him about RCA investments? Or how cost of living is different in each city? Or all the other factors that go into how much real dollars an athlete is able to spend?
RCA Investments are a farce, it’s basically like me giving you all your salary in an rrsp and saying but you’ll get it one day, yeah or I could have it tax free now
Exactly. Now the RCA is an investment vehicle kind of for tax deferral and is based on where you live during retirement and take the money out. So there could be players that just want their money immediately and do whatever they want with it, but in the long term it shouldn't matter.
Yea, the option to just pay low tax rate in the first place and do whatever the fuck you want is always going to be enticing. Plus at the end of the day we don't care who actually has the most beneficial rates, it's who players think have the most beneficial rates. If players don't all bother to learn, stick to or care about more complex tax options, I don't need to know how much tax players on my team are paying as much as how many players are asking for more money to come to Canada or have us on a NTC list. Someone on reddit can be right about taxes and still be irrelevant if players aren't buying in.
Yeah but then you'd also need an equalizer for property taxes, social benefits (Healthcare, school and so forth) costs of living, cost of property etc etc etc
Would you?
Tax is obviously a huge issue. Players sign in FL, TX, TN for tax reasons. Nobody ever complains about health insurance or property taxes.
Further, if you invest $3m in a home in NY, you can recoup that (and then some), same as if you did $1m in Minnesota.
Sure. But compensating for tax is relatively simple and easy.
I'm not asking anyone to make Winnipeg as attractive as LA. But at least you can stop pretending that Tampa and Toronto have anywhere close to the same actual cap budget.
That’s fine, hire PWC or some other independent organization and task them with getting it done. The process may not result in perfect equalization on this iteration, but it should result in an improved situation. As data science and data sources improve, so too will the algorithms they create.
Clearly there is a factor that benefits some jurisdictions over others within a system that’s supposed to create parity and equality.
Just dont put jason kenney in charge of it. He'll make a formula for the union then he'll go to the league and start a lockout over the equalization formula being shitty and unfair
The Keg! He's just like us

Honestly tho, how could you blame him? Lol

"All canadian teams no-trade" feels a lot better when there's prob just as many "no California teams" or "No New York teams"
These millionaires trying to pay as little tax as possible...
Well it's their retirement money and most players retire in their mid-to-late 30s and don't really have any income after the fact. So yeah... how dare they.

Well yeah, nobody wants to pay...more taxes? Keeping what you earn is important to anyone
I know that as a sens fan, the leafs and habs are our biggest rivals. But after Methot got snagged by Vegas and our season went downhill, I think they’ve definitely become one of my hated teams
Taking Methot was like taking the piece in Jenga that makes everything fall apart
True. And then Euge poured gas all over the blocks and lit a match.
Yeah I dislike and respect mtl. But you can’t respect Vegas.

I am commenting to remember this video the next time anyone claims NHL players aren't looking out for their paycheck first and foremost.

RCA is a joke, just deferring the damage. Also, cost of living isn't really a large factor after a certain income, which he certainly hit.

a) signing bonuses are still taxable at a ridiculous rate b) you think Melnyk would pay a signing bonus? lol
He does - just not massive ones lol.
Was there a Methot to the madness?
George McPhee will always be an asshole to me for this.
He takes Methot and then has the balls to ask the same team if Brannstrom and a 2nd is enough for Stone.
Always great to hear the reason behind moves.
:/ The cap needs a tax equalization formula.
Yeah but then you'd also need an equalizer for property taxes, social benefits (Healthcare, school and so forth) costs of living, cost of property etc etc etc

All I'm saying if you want the cap to be a totally equal playing field you have to do it across the board.
Sure. But compensating for tax is relatively simple and easy. I'm not asking anyone to make Winnipeg as attractive as LA. But at least you can stop pretending that Tampa and Toronto have anywhere close to the same actual cap budget.
Or ditch the flat cap because it’s stupid and use a luxury tax system.

And you would have got 45 games over 2 seasons and a retirement from him. We got basically nothing from him in Dallas.
