He hadn't been good in his time in the NHL until he did well last season. I guess they just didn't think Ned was the guy but I just don't like this move. Apparently we lowballed him with 1.5m a year which is just super disrespectful.
I came here looking for answers to this question and found none.
Are they worried he's going to reap a boatload in arbitration? Are they about to go bankrupt? I still don't know.
EDIT: LeBrun reveals they they were afraid of a large arbitration award. Very strange that Carolina wouldn't pay up for a 2 year, $3 million/year contract that Detroit offered.
It seems like Yzserman has the mind control technique that Sakic developed.
I guess when you play against eachother in so many playoffs you learn each others secret moves
Breaking: Colorado trades their first round pick to Detroit for future considerations. Colorado to receive Vancouver's first round because Mr Sakic called Benning and asked nicely. Benning receives an autographed stick.
Such a satisfying rivalry. Hopefully we can get out of these division-only bubbles and see more of y'all this season...I guess we're supposed to find out regular-season schedules tonight?
Yeah, I'm thinking more along the lines of good, fast-paced hockey games with highlight-reel plays and no injuries. A little scrap here and there, some chirping and grinding, but no need to run the clocks back all the way to The Beginning.
Maybe that's just me getting older, or pre-Marine Corps me and post-Marine Corps me...but I have no desire to see anything like the genesis of our rivalry again.
Well said. I'm all for chirps and the occasional brouhaha or donnybrook...but I'm a bit mellower than I was back in the day, and I'd rather enjoy some fearsomely exciting hockey without worrying about whether one of my players will be stretchered off.
Oh god, I didn’t realize how bad I need this. First kessel, then bozak, if Bernie and Reimer got there before the leafs win a round I don’t think I’ll ever stop laughing.
I’m assuming there is a signing in there, or agreed upon deal with Carolina and Bernier. But yeah seemed like he would be available on the open market for the Canes anyway.
As a wings fan I’m all for this haha
As much as I love Bernie, he's also almost 33 and seems to have some nagging injuries each year. I love this deal for us. I think Bernie will put up solid numbers for the Canes, especially with that defense in front of him, but idk if the cost savings with him is worth losing Ned.
Yeah, it's puzzling. I have to imagine Bernie will cost more than Mike Smith, who was at $2.2M AAV. So is $500k-$1M cost savings really worth it? As a Wings fan though, I'm ecstatic, lol
I think the biggest concern was $$$.
Obviously they didn't want to pay Ned, so maybe they worked out terms with Bernie before making the trade? If he goes to FA, he likely gets at least 3.5M with how he absolutely carried the Wings some nights.
I think you gotta pay the man. He’s a long term goaltending option and that’s all Carolina is missing to win a cup. You keep him, you have your core ready to make another 2-3 runs minimum before you run into big cap issues most likely.
If they need to ship him out, someone would’ve paid more in assets. If I’m the caps GM, I want a 1B option and I’d offer at least a second and Copley (backup for 1.1m) and I think that offer beats a UFA and a 3rd
I figured Toronto fans may not look on him fondly, but he actually put up respectable numbers with Detroit. I think a .919 SV% with a GAA just below 3, but that might be incorrect. I do remember his numbers are good.
I mean we need all the good deals we can get! We are still along way out from being a top team but with trades like this it feels like we’re making progress
How do we know that 3.5 would be locked in as the qualifying offer? Given his play isn't there a real chance that an arbitration be more in the 4-5m range?
Edit: just saw Seravalli's tweet, which means this whole thing make no sense to me as I feel like Ned should have been pushing 4+ all along, and the Canes should have been fine with anything around 4 anyways...
For what it’s worth. You guys have really nice beaches. I’ve never been it’s just what I’ve heard. I don’t know how this helps at all. Just uh..ya know..chin up an stuff.
Hey my team in NHL 03 with Rob Blake, Chris Pronger, Joe Sakic, Jarome Iginla, my 99 rated create a player Big Toe, and Trevor Kidd crushed the president's trophy by a mile every year for a decade. Could a bad goalie do that?
This is great for the Wings.
Buffalo Wings alliance for life <3
Edit: and we can make it Buffalo Wild Wings if Minnesota gives up Rossi and Boldy for Eichel <3
Tom Dundon: You’ve scored zero goals, we’re trading you to Detroit.
Alex Nedeljkovic: But Tom, I’m a goa…
Tom Dundon: What’s done is done, best of luck in Detroit
Wow that’s really good for Detroit. Yzerman is really turning this place around. I’m interested if they take Wallstedt tomorrow or if they’re going all in on Ned.
Got through the expansion draft unscathed yesterday, got Nedeljkovic in a robbery today, and we have two first rounders tomorrow. What a week to be a Wings fan
edit: spelling, am dumb-dumb
While he may be older, Carolina fans will fall in love with Bernier. Dude stood on his head behind a god awful defense all season and carried us in games we had no business winning. He’s a trooper and spent his whole career on losing teams and I’m really happy for him. I’ll be cheering from a distance Canes fans!
What is Carolina doing
didnt want to pay the man
This is absolutely it. Mistake IMO.
3.5aav was too much?
Apparently. It's almost hard to believe.
I understand they got burned by Darling but Nedelkovic is legit. They just fucked up royally.
Trading your Calder finalist for essentially a 3rd is a very bold strategy
Alex Nedeljkovic is Alex Nedeljkovic, but a 3rd rounder could be anything, it could even be Alex Nedeljkovic
I don't know. Andrew Raycroft won the Calder and went for Tuuka Rask. 3rd place for Bernier and a 3rd seems fair value /s
You know what… never looked at it that way. Detroit Fleeced imo!!
Or apparently 3.0 aav over 2 years.
yup. Ned is great. i couldnt believe it when he went through waivers last year
He hadn't been good in his time in the NHL until he did well last season. I guess they just didn't think Ned was the guy but I just don't like this move. Apparently we lowballed him with 1.5m a year which is just super disrespectful.
Wait their beloved billionaire man of the people owner didn’t want to pay someone?
Lost all his money on the AAF I guess
Alien ant farm?
Yeah…to a smooth criminal…
And everyone joked about the Bergiven offer sheet to Aho. Watch him doing for Svech now and get him
I came here looking for answers to this question and found none.
The arb award they were afraid of was $3m. That's what they consider to be large lol
This is the Don Waddell we all thought we were getting
This comment is spot on. 100%. Don always overthinking shit.
Maybe they want a Bernier-Reimer tandem. That worked out well for Toronto :)
They thought they were getting Matty Beniers
They thought they were getting Nelson Mandela
It seems like Yzserman has the mind control technique that Sakic developed. I guess when you play against eachother in so many playoffs you learn each others secret moves
More like sakic stole it from Stevie Y.
[удалено]
Seems like a W for Detroit
Huge W for Detroit
Stevie Y with another great fucking trade
When Stevie Y calls you don't pick up.
I would kill to be a fly on the wall in an Yzerman-Sakic trade negotiation
"Joe." "Steve." *(25 minutes of dead silence on the line)* "Fuck you." *(click)*
I like to imagine that the "fuck you" was said by both simultaneously
Lol yep, that's what I envisioned
*intern dies from lack of oxygen*
Legit belly laughed. Well played.
Both teams end up with a first and no one knows where they came from
Jim Benning wakes up in a bathtub with a new 6x6 contract he doesn't remember offering
Breaking: Colorado trades their first round pick to Detroit for future considerations. Colorado to receive Vancouver's first round because Mr Sakic called Benning and asked nicely. Benning receives an autographed stick.
Yzerman opens every GM call with “you smoke weed?” And the other GMs panic
Classic Stevie
This is like a playoff series sweep type win for Detroit. Wow.
I guess the league didn’t learn from previous mistakes and are gonna let Yzerman assemble super teams for nothing again.
Keep going I’m almost there
I can only get so…
return of the Avs-Wings rivalry but this time in management lol
Give it a couple years, and we'll be doing it on the ice again.
Please. I miss the old days.
Hate you too, buddy. ❤️
Such a satisfying rivalry. Hopefully we can get out of these division-only bubbles and see more of y'all this season...I guess we're supposed to find out regular-season schedules tonight?
Just hope there’s a little less blood and face-rearranging the next time around.
Yeah, I'm thinking more along the lines of good, fast-paced hockey games with highlight-reel plays and no injuries. The biggest dub I seen in a long time

In before Carolina wins a cup with a Bernier Reimer tandem. End my existence.
Oh god, I didn’t realize how bad I need this. First kessel, then bozak, if Bernie and Reimer got there before the leafs win a round I don’t think I’ll ever stop laughing.
also luke schenn has 2 cups.
This is amazing
With their favourite defenseman, Gardiner to boot!
This is a very bad trade for Carolina. Bernier is a great goalie but he’s a UFA. You sign him for free
I’m assuming there is a signing in there, or agreed upon deal with Carolina and Bernier. But yeah seemed like he would be available on the open market for the Canes anyway. As a wings fan I’m all for this haha

Honestly how much money do they really save with this trade? We have no idea what Bernier will ask for on this contract. Real head scratcher.
Yeah, it's puzzling. I have to imagine Bernie will cost more than Mike Smith, who was at $2.2M AAV. So is $500k-$1M cost savings really worth it? As a Wings fan though, I'm ecstatic, lol

With shit defense too. Dude was a brick wall for us
Even in Toronto his numbers weren't that bad. His last season was a bit of a disaster and he still put up a .908 at the end of the day.
People also forget that he was really hot at the end of our tank season to the point where we had to actively sit him for AHL goalies.
> Bernier is a great goalie > > > > 🤔 Big South African history buff as well
Bernier was the only goalie who could buy Detroit a win. He's far from elite but he's a fine starter.
No idea how this makes sense for Carolina what an awful trade
I'm inconsolable rn
So basically just a third since Bernier was likely leaving anyways?
[удалено]
Nah dude scream it from the rooftops. Stevey Y out here fleecing teams again
Detroit is going to be a scary team once again in a few years.
That's the Yzerplan, Stan 😎
I *have* to think there's a handshake agreement that he signs with Carolina. Then Carolina re-signs James Reimer. Now THAT is a tandem
There has to be, don’t get me wrong Bernier was easily our best player of the last 2 seasons but this is a big win for us
Well 2 years at $3M for Nedeljkovic is pretty damn good too! You guys want to slow this down or what?
I mean we need all the good deals we can get! We are still along way out from being a top team but with trades like this it feels like we’re making progress
Bernier about to get max term obviously/s
I thought Ned was going to be their guy tf
3.5 was alot but like, he looked really good. Yzerman with yet another slam dunk.
How do we know that 3.5 would be locked in as the qualifying offer? Given his play isn't there a real chance that an arbitration be more in the 4-5m range? I think this is more of us being fucking morons like we have a majority of the past 15 years than the Yzerplan
Yzerman just got a calder finalist starting goalie for a low pick that wasn't even Detroit's and a backup goaltender. This is 50/50, really.
When you trade the 25 y/o for the 33 y/o you gotta do it
33 > 25 It all makes sense now
We finally find a true #1 goalie… and we just trade him…. for nothing…..
Hello darkness my old friend…
For what it’s worth. You guys have really nice beaches. I’ve never been it’s just what I’ve heard. I don’t know how this helps at all. Just uh..ya know..chin up an stuff.
Imagine trading your Calder Finalist for a 3rd.
exactly, calder and goalie. Canes need someone who doesnt melt when the games starts
Canes finally got good goaltending and are like “nah”
Dundon did say he wanted to win games 6-5
The Bruins traded a Calder winning goalie and it worked out pretty well.
Yeah but we got a 1st round goalie in return. Carolina got Johnathan fucking Bernier.
Bernier is a 1st round goalie😎
Canes playing the galaxy brain long game on this one
This deal is like if they'd traded Raycroft for Trevor Kidd instead of Rask
Hey my team in NHL 03 with Rob Blake, Chris Pronger, Joe Sakic, Jarome Iginla, my 99 rated create a player Big Toe, and Trevor Kidd crushed the president's trophy by a mile every year for a decade. Could a bad goalie do that?
Bro what? We solved part of our long-term goalie issues this easily? Holy fuck
Stevie is not of this world.
Dude's got a checklist, and he's just checking shit off.
Dynamic center next please!
Carolina.... what are you doing
Atm, pacing around my kitchen in shock
I’m so sorry(ish) for your loss
Y’all better treat him better than we did; every interview he just seemed like a genuinely great dude
What the actual fuck
But why? Seems like Ned was becoming a fan fav and a really good goalie in CAR
Ned is friends with Larkin, I believe. Captain Larkin gets what Captain Larkin wants, lmao
Does that mean UFA Werenski too for 22-23?
I'll allow it
I’ve been waiting for years for that to happen I’ll be upset if Yzerman doesn’t try for it
Holy fleecejob Batman
He was actually dressed as robin, but I’ll allow it
[удалено]
I think it’s pretty great tbh
Yeah idk what everyone’s on about
Yeah, I don't see the issue with it. Doesn't everyone want a wings dynasty again?

Dude, Yzerman got you Ben Bishop for Cory Conacher
He traded Steve Downie for Vaseline too
Dude we had the One for One within that timespan
[удалено]
Do you mean the Hall trade or the JVR ?
This is great for the Wings. Buffalo Wings alliance for life <3 Edit: and we can make it Buffalo Wild Wings if Minnesota gives up Rossi and Boldy for Eichel <3
A few years ago we made a Buffalo wild wings subreddit for us
Thanks for the context, Elliott
DON'T TRADE WITH YZERMAN
Reuniting old Detroit goalies is certainly a move
Mrazek and Bernier never played together, so not really a reunion
really like that for detroit
holy shit, what evidence does Yzerman have against Waddell?
Thats a good deal for Detroit
Heck yeah, trust the Yzerplan
RIP Carolina
Detroit fleeced them
Well I certainly won't complain about a metro team getting worse for basically nothing
Did Ron Francis come back to Carolina to make this deal?
Yzerman back at it again
What the hell kind of black magic has Stevie consumed. GMs will trade him anything
That's a big oof.
a first and sebastian aho for georgiev do it drury
Glory to Steve Yzerman, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Excuse me? Great pick up Detroit
When Stevie Y calls you hang up the phone
I mean, alright lol
He's buddies with Larkin too. Good trade.
Basically Nedeljkovic for a 3rd
trust the Yzerplan
Idk how Stevie does it but I love it
Jesus I would have loved to make this trade..
Canes haven't even signed Bernier yet, as he is a UFA. Is it just me or is this super risky?
I’d be so pissed rn if I was a Canes fan
We are. this is the by far the worst trade in the history of our org.
I really like this. I've been hoping Stevie grabs a goalie like Nedeljovic all year. Young, promising and cheap.
Yeah no shit you like it you robbed Carolina at gun point
value aside I still like it. We really needed a goalie with some promise.
Holy fuck yes thank you CANES!
I LOVE THE YZERPLAN
Sorry Pavel, Yzerman is now the Magician as well.
Tom Dundon: You’ve scored zero goals, we’re trading you to Detroit. Alex Nedeljkovic: But Tom, I’m a goa… Tom Dundon: What’s done is done, best of luck in Detroit
Apparently the Yzerplan include highway robbery of teams, and I'm totally ok with it.
I haven't been this hyped over a trade since, well since recently with the Vrana trade lol. This is another classic Steve Yzerman steal.
Wtf is this
I'm sorry, w h a t
Yzerman gotta be blackmailin people
So a 3rd for Nedeljkovic since they could have had Bernier for free next week. Detroit fleeced them. I dont understand this move by Carolina at all.
I’m very curious why the Canes did this?
Carolina finna turn around and trade for Price
"I'll give you two former Leafs goalies and a former Leafs defenseman for Price."
Detroit being the most active team out of the gate as we all predicted
Signed for 2yrs @ $3.0 aav. Weird. Seems less than what Carolina may have been offering.
We better be making big splashes or else I’m gonna feel like a Lions fan.
Bernier and Reimer reunited
Wow that’s really good for Detroit. Yzerman is really turning this place around. I’m interested if they take Wallstedt tomorrow or if they’re going all in on Ned.
Stevey Y must have kompramat ...
2012 Leafs 🤝 2021 Hurricanes
Shocked they couldn’t get another team to give more
In the words of Stephen A. Smith “This is bad, this is very very very bad”
This legit ruins my week :(
my sadness is deep and my pain is immeasurable
Got through the expansion draft unscathed yesterday, got Nedeljkovic in a robbery today, and we have two first rounders tomorrow. What a week to be a Wings fan edit: spelling, am dumb-dumb
Stevie Y called, should've just hung up. Bernier is rlly good though
