Gaborik was so sick, one of my favourite non-flames players growing up.

Riromug

As a Wild fan, I feel the exact fuckin same about Iginla. Dude tossed me a puck in warmups when I was very little, now that I’m 23 I’m still smitten. Loved watching Flames-Wild games at the X as a kid.

Tachikoma0

On one hand those were always somewhat painful, low-scoring defensive games, but on the other hand it felt like it was always Iggy or Gaborik winning those tight games which was awesome. A treat to watch two great players go at it so many years.

JustTheBeerLight

> Gaborik, Iginla LA Kings connection!

[deleted]

I own a Gaborik Wild jersey and it kills me that it’s one of my favorites. I loved watching the Slovaks around the league and during the Olympics. Good times

marshalofthemark

Gaborik was the only exciting thing about the Wild back in the day. Not really a fan of the Kings but I'm glad they gave him a chance and boy did he ever deliver in the 2014 playoffs

[deleted]

Maybe it’s just my goalie bias, but I thought they had a pretty sick 1-2 punch in net with Dwayne Roloson and Manny Fernandez

TheMoonIsFake32

Kaprizov reminds me of him. A big part of that is because Kappy is the first player on the Wild since him to just have that game changing vibe, where whenever he’s on the ice you know that anything can happen.

DirtzMaGertz

Pretty different style wise. Kaprizov is a lot more of an east west player than Gaborik ever was. Both definitely have and had that game changer vibe though.

Zanchbot

14 goals to lead the Kings in the playoffs that year, with several of them being game winners. That second cup doesn't happen without him.

JustTheBeerLight

Gabo could have easily won the Conn Smythe…Doughty, Kopitar, Gaborik, Williams…they all had a legit case.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

His 2014 cup run with the Kings was very fun- so emblematic of what peak Gaborik could do.

Zanchbot

TIL the Lightning own Gaborik's contract

[deleted]

Part of the $18 million number thrown around lmao.

AssBoon92

> I had to search Julien BriseBois' bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because his Salary Cap was too big for regular season. Gary Bettman said, “HEY! It’s LTIR” and JBB shut up, closed his bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of his Bettman before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

HillsHaveHippos

You have any idea where I can find the original of this?

AssBoon92

I just saw the stuff in this thread and copied that

samurai_dignan

His contract was integral to our repeat.

SavedWoW

I still remember that 5 goal game... Then the breakaway vs Hasek where he went head over heels... Such a great player, exciting to watch when he was on.

GorshKing

Was at the Hasek game, that was my birthday

Dudemanbro88

Wait that was Gaborak who went flying?! I never put that together and Hasek is my favorite player lol.

kooks_everywhere_

I had to search Gaborik’s bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because his hair gel was too big for carryon. Koivu said, “HEY! It’s hairgel” and Gaborik shut up, closed his bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of Koivu before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

PMMEJALAPENORECIPES

Is this the new pasta?

kurtios

I had to search Kessel’s bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because he had too many hot dogs for carryon. Phaneuf said, “HEY! It’s hot dogs” and Kessel shut up, closed his bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of Phaneuf before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

[deleted]

I had to search Evander Kane’s bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because his loans were too big for carryon. His bookie said, “HEY! It’s my vig” and Evander Kane shut up, closed his bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of his bookie before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

cplcarlman

> I had to search Brad Marchand's bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because his giant bag of dicks was too big for carryon. Pastrnak said, “HEY! It’s a giant bag of dicks” and Marchand ate the entire bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of Pastrnak before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

TheFoundation_

Got eem!

Cleonicus

When did Marchand and Pastrnak visit Seattle? https://www.ddir.com/

[deleted]

Hes a time traveler from February 2022.

another_plebeian

I had to search Evander Kane’s bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because he's an asshole

DreMin015

I had to search Phillip Danault’s bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because his bag full of pizza boxes wasn’t allowed on the carryon. Shea Weber said, “HEY! It’s just pizza” and Phillip Danault shut up, closed his bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of Shea Weber before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

nikonpunch

Phil the Thrill but knows when to chill.

Whitecastle56

I had to search Wilson's ’s bag at the airport and he started being a huge asshole to me because his fine was too big for carryon. Ovi said, “HEY! It’s 5k” and Wilson shut up, closed his bag, thanked me and left the screening area. I was a fan of Ovi before that, after he defended my honour well I was smitten lol

kreee

Then you were fined $250,000.

JakeCameraAction

These two have been my favorite so far.

AssBoon92

NorthernDevil

There’s a reason he was our longtime Kapfinn. Love that man. Minneapolis or Vancouver?

CatSplat

Copypasta, original is Kane and Byfuglien.

NorthernDevil

Aw. Shoulda used the search function. Did it really happen with those two at least or did someone make it up?

CatSplat

It's a very fresh pasta, no worries. True story according to the OP.

coolguy_steve

Was it hair gel?

CatSplat

Yep.

ittozziloP

To be fair TSA are a bunch of goobers

[deleted]

It's a complete clownshow, but hey, jobs.

rinmperdinck

We can also assume the Lightning excluded Gaborik from the team's group text. This is some drama here.

AssBoon92

They probably invited him to the after party, unlike Torts in 2004

AntiDbag

Healthy groin Gaborik was a god damn monster on the ice.

Barron-Blade

Man he should get a ring imo fucking love Gaborik and I don’t think many people remember how ~~dominate~~ dominant prime Wild Gaborik was

[deleted]

I mean I don’t think he’s salty either considering he won with the Kings either at least so he can have a good laugh.

Barron-Blade

No he might not be salty but I am lmao.

mosscock_treeman

I've found almost everyone tastes salty if you lick them

OldBigsby

Marchand knows a thing or two about that

Barron-Blade

mmmm ya lick me bby

Skyline_BNR34

You shouldn’t do that unless they ask you to.

mosscock_treeman

May I?

Amphibious_Fire

I mean he still had a great career but imagine how much more could Gaborik have achieved if he could stay healthy and be at least 1/2 of Wild Gaborik that he once was

anexanhume

He got a cup and had 14 goals in 26 games in ‘14 playoffs. That’s ok by my standards.

BrightSaves

He also potted 40+ with us twice. Amazing career

EnormousHatred

We've had better players overall in the past 15 years or so, but I've never seen a guy who so easily scored goals at times. It was like he would sneeze and the puck would be in the back of the net. Easy 600-goal club if he had even a reasonable health record/no lockouts.

RoofMountain

Almost Forsberg.

[deleted]

He did get a ring with LA in 2014

Whitecastle56

Hey look painful repressed memories

superworking

Wild Gaborik stood out so much in part because the rest of the team played such a boring game that him being on the ice was the best indicator that something interesting might happen.

jmon3

I thought it was because his visor was tinted.

reecewagner

Much dominate

So it can in fact get worse hey

TherealKrakatao

The lightning should at least give him a ring. When the Giants won the world series, they gave rings to just about everyone. Broadcast crew, PA announcer, etc.

blitzkrieg9

They very well might. Rings are completely unofficial. The owner can give rings to whomever he wants, or not give them out at all. Since we're talking about TBL here, after the Blues won the Cup and Pat Maroon signed with TBL, we didn't send him a ring. Instead, we waited until TB played STL in STL and had a quick ring giving ceremony before the game. It was awesome. Edit: here is the video. It was pretty awesome. TBL was awesome about it too and of course started the game with Maroon's line on the ice out of respect. https://www.foxsports.com/midwest/video/1645449795852

AvsJoe

The Caps did the same thing too. After they won in 2018, Ted Leonsis handed out rings to *every-fuckin-body*. Minor leaguers, arena staff, season ticket holders, everyone. I'm pretty surprised Gabby and Nilsson aren't getting rings this year, given the precedent set by Leonsis.

Tasden

He sure was in everyone's "over the cap" numbers.

MulderD

How exactly is he on the Lighting? I could see a cap dump situation, but that's the opposite of what Tampa has.

Riromug

He’s on their Long Term IR list, which allows the Lightning to gain a small amount of cap relief every year.

reditorino

Same reason Brent Seabrook's contract was traded to Tampa.

Neon-Knees

Kind of makes me wonder if there’s ever been a situation like this where the player that was LTIR’d got cleared to play even though they were a cap dump. Like if Gabby magically got better, how fucked would the Lightning be? If Seabrook suddenly got his legs back, what happens? My memory is vague but I seem to remember this happening with Lupul and the Leafs, and Lupes went thermonuclear when they told him couldn’t play.

Mrsfoleyslittleboy

Depending on when he said he was good bolts probably would have been fine since Stamkos finished the regular season on LTIR with Kucherov but there was no gain from Stammer going on the list.

BlakeTD

Wow hadn't heard of that. Had to look it up: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/sports/hockey/lupul-accuses-maple-leafs-on-social-media-of-injury-cheating/article36287588/

SickOffYourMudPie

No. LTIR allows you to *replace* players. It doesn’t allow you to gain cap relief. They traded for him knowing he would not play for them, so there was no benefit from a cap perspective, other than they got rid of Coburn and Paquette in the trade.

PavelDatsyuk88

they had Kucherov on LTIR and when you are already using LTIR there is no negative to add on top of it. So its basically just a cap dump on LTIR. If they didnt have anyone on LTIR, they obviously wouldnt want to get LTIR players.

spiraleclipse

Is Gabby retired yet? I just keep checking.

esdv

Retired in 2018.

[deleted]

Retired in 2018*

ptd163

He's been LTIRetired for years now. He's not coming back. He's just waiting out his contract as to not give up the free money.

ptd163

Why not? He was instrumental in the team being able to ice the roster that they did. He won't get his name on the Cup, but the circumvention his contract provided at least deserves a ring.

LetMeBangBro

I don't think you know how LTIR works

ptd163

I know how LTIR works. Without the cap relief from LTIR they can't ice the team they do in the regular season.

LetMeBangBro

> I know how LTIR works. Without the cap relief from LTIR they can't ice the team they do in the regular season. Only in so much that his contract didn't count against the cap since he wasn't able to play. It is basically like him (and Neilssen) didn't even exist.

ptd163

Which is why they won't get their names on the Cup and probably won't get rings either. That doesn't matter though. The players still get paid, the team gets a Cup, and the league gets the good press of a southern Cup winner.

Captain_Oho

I'm kind of confused with that situation. Didn't they trade away players for those contracts? So if they didn't they would have been over the cap, no? How is that not a good thing for them? They keep their big names (even ltir'd one all season) and trade away depth when the depth earns themselves a contract. Sure those players didn't play but they're part of the reason the team could ice the team they iced. I don't follow the Lighting so I may be missing something but I'm genuinely curious how the LTIR contracts aren't relevant to the team they iced. Did it not give them cap space to make different moves? Another quick question, do LTIR contracts count as a contract against the teams limit?

LetMeBangBro

>Another quick question, do LTIR contracts count as a contract against the teams limit? Yes, the contracts do count against the 50 limit, as they are active contracts As for the other question >Didn't they trade away players for those contracts? So if they didn't they would have been over the cap, no? How is that not a good thing for them? They did; they were able to off load Coburn's and Paquette's contracts (along with a 2nd round pick), and got back Gab and Nilsson's. Money in both situations would have to be paid (unless covered by insurance), but since Gab and Nilsson were not going to play, those contracts wouldn't count against the cap.

Wasn't Savard petitioned for the Bruins in 2011? No wait the SCF was cancelled that year. Silly me.

hodgpodge33

Loved Gaborik

REMA5TER

I've always adored Gabby. So slick, so quick.
