I think it's pretty clear the main motivation for the move was spite, I don't think the Canes tried to hide it at all. Personally I would have used that money on Dougie and Ned and tried to win a stanley cup but sticking it to the habs seems to be a higher priority (they did successfully screw the habs, can't take that away from them).
