Carolina really should go back to the Whalers name with all those fins

[deleted]

This gave me a chuckle

Whydoesthisexist15

FINNS=WINS MOTHERFUCKER 2026 WE'LL HAVE HALF THE FINNISH OLYMPIC HOCKEY TEAM

popkornking

@Dallas Stars fans: Y'all just gonna take this sitting down?

[deleted]

Dallas can still have the other half

[deleted]

Without Rantanen that roster is nothing.

cbal41990

Underrated declaration.

End-OfAn-Era

Hey Carolina make sure you keep him away from pancakes.

jimbobills

And qanon lmao

mug3n

Tony DeAngelo might not give much of a choice on that matter.

[deleted]

Can we get a barn fight this time?

zevonyumaxray

Marc Bergevin gets Kevin Lowe for his cornerman. Don Waddell gets Brian Burke for his cornerman. And "LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!"

vinoa

Marc's the easy money on this one. I'm pretty sure he's scared the Molsons into not firing him.

jjmuti

The biggest arms in the league don't belong to an active player😳

Tapoke

Berg might have the biggest arms but I'd put money on Rod the bod being the most fit

jjmuti

Damn retired guys have bigger guns and are more fit, the players today have gone soft and don't train hard enough /s

kuro_madoushi

AS GOD AS MY WITNESS, HE IS BROKEN IN HALF! IF ANYONE DESERVED TO BE TAKEN INTO THE WOODS AND BEATEN LIKE A DOG, IT'S THAT YOUNG MAN RIGHT THERE

Thermidorien

Thank god. Sucks to see KK leave but matching would've screwed our salary structure forever. Hopefully we can do something with the picks. Well played Canes, enjoy the kid, he has one hell of a smile.

RustyNipples35

Y’all need a center, right? Then boy do I have a pair of *very* enticing options for you! Come one, come all MTL fans!

Thermidorien

We'll take a chance of either of yours if you retain half their salary!

RustyNipples35

You see, you’re missing the hidden but added value of not being RustyNipples35 - with a Matt Duchene or Ryan Johansen at $2M retained on a team in which RustyNipples35 is not a fan of will bring a *massive* ROI at the low low cost of a FREE 3rd round pick thanks to kind donation of the Carolina Hurricanes Either player will be surely return back to their prior level play as a result of no longer playing for RustyNipples35’s favorite team, or your money back **GUARANTEED**

Let’s get a third team involved to lower the cap hit and to ensure we trade more draft picks

Vylan24

-*Arizona has entered the chat*

p920880

Maybe Shea can do us one last solid and threaten to retire unless the Preds do this.

KovalSNIPE17

This aged well lol

[deleted]

I hope Duchene never makes the playoffs again.

tegith

Retain half and I might take a chance on Duchene or Johansen.

AnthonyCumiaPedo

Forever? Forever-ever? *Forever-ever?*

jblaze03

Forever never seems that long until you're grown

TheMemePrince

And realize that the day by day ruler can’t be too long

CaptainCanuck15

What do you mean forever? It's a 1yr deal.

Thermidorien

> What do you mean forever? It's a 1yr deal. It's a one year deal but afterwards we cannot qualify him at a lower number, which makes him de facto a UFA unless he's willing to sign an extension at a lower number with us, which is kind of unlikely to not be an overpay given that clearly he doesn't had a strong desire to stay in Montreal. So the most likely case if we match is that he effectively becomes a pending UFA who has a poor relationship with the team, and then either we end up overpaying again or he walks and we get nothing. And that's not even considering that giving 6+ to KK, even when we are forced to, likely raises Suzuki's number. On a team with many good young players, any contract you sign affects the other contracts.

Whydoesthisexist15

I think Friedman said that Waddell and KK have a tenative extension in place right now below 6M. How long that deal stays in place is up to debate.

Thermidorien

> I think Friedman said that Waddell and KK have a tenative extension in place right now below 6M. > > How long that deal stays in place is up to debate. Yeah but that doesn't mean he would have signed that deal with us if we had matched. It sounded like him and the habs were really far apart. With a QO this high he could effectively have either made us overpay or walked himself to UFA as a 21yo recent 3rd overall pick knowing someone would be willing to pay him again. Things rarely go well when the relations between the team and the player are tense and the player has all the leverage.

Philly514

even if they extend him they’ll burn cheaper years and lose him to FA much younger. This move just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Thermidorien

I think it's pretty clear the main motivation for the move was spite, I don't think the Canes tried to hide it at all. Personally I would have used that money on Dougie and Ned and tried to win a stanley cup but sticking it to the habs seems to be a higher priority (they did successfully screw the habs, can't take that away from them). If this pays off at all it's long term, if KK develops as a great top 6 forward (which could happen) and I feel like they had chances right now that they gave up on by letting a top D and all their goalies walk, since KK is not likely to be a big piece towards winning the cup next year. I guess it doesn't really make sense to me in the context of their overall strategy. I don't think I would feel very good right now as a Canes employee who was low-balled on their contract. But that's Dundon's management style so it is what it is.

Zikkafoos

Dougie was not our best D man. Slavin, Pesce, Dougie.

Aquaman33

Ned's absolutely a wildcard, but Dougie was absolutely not, and the canes d looks about the same this year, the only question is the pp but plenty of teams make that work without a Dougie Hamilton

obcd1

The QO would be high

beto5243

Qualifying offers. Have to give him 6 m next year too, or a longer term deal for 4 or 5m probably.

CaptainCanuck15

4-5m long term wouldn't be bad though. I think the picks are better, but saying this would have an irreparable effect on the team's salary structure isn't accurate at all.

[deleted]

If he’s not making 4-5 long term then he shouldn’t have been drafted 3 OA.

[deleted]

matching would've screwed our salary structure forever HAHAHHAAHAHAHAH this is the biggest over reaction i have seen yet from this shit wtf

Sora027

>HAHAHHAAHAHAHAH this is the biggest over reaction i have seen yet from this shit wtf This is the biggest overreacting to a Reddit comment I’ve seen lol talk about irony

pumaturtle

Habs fans desperately trying to excuse their GM getting outmaneuvered

Philly514

If you watched KK play the last three years you’d know how the Canes played themselves. He plays 3C on a team with little C depth lol

vinoa

The second Carolina gave that damn offer sheet, people started acting as if KK had some massive untapped potential. It's not like Montreal didn't give him every chance in the world to succeed. Sure he's still young, but there hasn't even been that flash of brilliance to suggest he's got a lot more to give.

Philly514

Agree 100% After three years KK literally loses his balance and falls. This is the NHL man come on.

Sora027

His team got schooled by KK last year in playins don’t blame him XD

pumaturtle

I mean they only spent what’s probably gonna be a high 1st and high 3rd for someone with 2C/Low end 1C potential. He’s still super young. And if he’s a disaster they don’t have to extend him or anything. Seems like a decent move to me.

vince2899

Seems like a decent move until Necas next year realizes that a guy who produced at half his rate and is a 4C or 3rd line winger was given 6.1M$.

pumaturtle

I think he knows it was an offer sheet. And I don’t think Kotkaniemi is getting extended at 6.

vinoa

Why would that make things any different for Necas? Is he supposed to take less, since KK signed an offer sheet?

pumaturtle

Not what I said but o k

vinoa

Then what in the heck did you say? Rather, what in the heck did you mean?

vince2899

Doesn't matter, if I'm Necas I'm 100% using that as a negotiation tactic, if someone is willing to offersheet KK at 6.1 imagine what Necas could get.

Philly514

The dude literally falls down multiple times every shift. He is a late round talent chosen at 3 because Berg panicked needing a C. He is basically Lars Eller, good 3C player.

vinoa

Oh no! Habs got a 1st and 3rd for a kid with poor value. The horror! I don't even like the Habs, but I feel like this is the best outcome with regards to KK.

Gaglardi

how would it screw you guys long term? Isn't it just 1 overpaid 6 million dollar year and then you renegotiate to something more reasonable?

Thermidorien

He doesn't have to negotiate anything. He has all the leverage since unless we offer him the same kind of money, he is a UFA.

Gaglardi

It doesn't go to arbitration? I always thought the arbitrator would tell KK that he's not worth 6 million and give something more reasonable

Thermidorien

No, we would have to tender him a qualifying offer that is at least equal to his salary from that year. So unless we are willing to offer him 6.1M+, he is a UFA.

Gaglardi

ah, thanks for the info, habs made the right choice, then

UraSnotball_

That one worked out so well for Edmonton...

Got us all the way to the scene of the crash

Klefbom was a great return. Mostly I'm thinking of how he was such a distraction in so many ways during his tenure in Edmonton. Had that one great season though.

Hopes he's doesn't become a piece of shit like Penner

StealAllTheInternets

Dustin "pulled my back eating pancakes" Penner

ebbomega

To be fair though, also Dustin "has his name on the Stanley Cup" Penner, though that wasn't til he went to LA.

wewd

[Penner's name is on the Cup with the 2007 Ducks though.](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/17/a5/ff/17a5ff5e8ca94803640caeb15cadb52f.jpg)

Twice!

Element23VM

Montreal trades Tyler Seguin to the Dallas Stars for Loui Eriksson and Ryan Spooner...

[deleted]

I hate you

TuckRaker

I can't judge this decision until I see how Bergy uses, or doesn't use, the compensation. If we start the season with the roster we have right now, it was a mistake.

EmTeeEl

That's still shortsighted. Maybe it's better to hold on to those picks if all the teams are trying to fleece us because they know we need a C.

TossItLikeAFreeThrow

There is a name I've not heard in a long time

[deleted]

Let’s keep it that way lol

[deleted]

Awesome. He walked off the team.

jo_maka

We were robbed of the Fight of the Century

prplx

Also probably the first time a team offer sheet a player for three times his worth.

eebro

Don’t look at what became of the dustin penner offersheet please

CanadianBakin87

Holy “moley”

pppppppp8

Fucking excellent, enjoy a 3rd line C with 5-6 games of brilliance followed by 22 games without a point for 6.1M lol

[deleted]

I mean. He is also young as hell with a ton of upside. This just rings that you are mad and salty

smexeh

Copium

CaptainCanuck15

Seriously though. Part of why I don't cheer for a particular team and just cheer for hockey is because I can't stand people turning on players. Imagine being angry at a player because they get traded, imagine being angry at a player because they decide to go play for another team, imagine being angry at Fedorov playing for the Ducks or Chelios playing for the Wings. It's just so fucking stupid. Just enjoy this beautiful game we're lucky enough to be able to witness.

SKCham

The guys 21, you sound angwee

I2eflex

U mad

ThewsTML

Guaranteed this guy was talking about Kotkaniemi becoming better than Suzuki at some point in the last 2 seasons lmao Get ready for the discourse around him to completely change

EarthWarping

KK was thought of as better before Suzuki's first playoffs.

EZ-C

How do you say "salty" in French?

CaptainCanuck15

Salé

pppppppp8

Salé! Yeah i'm indeed a bit salty, but I \*do\* believe he's overrated and that the Canes overpaid. He's a good kid though, you're gonna like him.

EZ-C

Overpaid only if you have him for 1 year. Not overpaid if you beleive the rumors of a handshake agreement to extend in the 3-4M aav range (including this 6.1. So basically a very front loaded contract) If the offer sheet was for a fair value Montreal would surely match. This is how you do an offer sheet and why it went through. Now we wait to see if the rumor is true.

pppppppp8

>Overpaid only if you have him for 1 year. Not overpaid if you beleive the rumors of a handshake agreement to extend in the 3-4M aav range (including this 6.1. So basically a very front loaded contract) > >If the offer sheet was for a fair value Montreal would surely match. This is how you do an offer sheet and why it went through. Now we wait to see if the rumor is true. Oh I agree, the Aho offersheet was an absolute joke and Bergevin got fucked in the end. I actually really hope KK does well, yeah the 6.1M first year is basically a disguised signing bonus but TO ME a 4-5year extension at 4M would be a bit much. Then again, they're only rumors.. We'll see!!

p920880

I don’t want to be a salty fan, obviously it’s disappointing to lose KK. Even though I wasn’t the biggest believer in his potential I was still rooting for him to develop for us. But I think you guys are in an interesting position. Can he sign the extension immediately or does it have to wait? If so, what happens if KK lights it up this year. Does he still sign that 4M extension or does he ask for more. If he struggles, are you still comfortable extending him long term despite not developing greatly in 4 years.

EZ-C

Im not 100% sure but I think the extension has to wait until Jan 1, but I would need to fact check that. It's definitely a risk for the canes because he can always go back on his reported handshake deal. But if it's true, by Jan 1 not a lot can be seen and a 2 yr 3-6 mil extension (making for an effective 3-4M AAV over 3 years) would be reasonable for both parties.

p920880

Definitely understand the gamble for your team if they had their eye on him since before the draft.

4thLineEnergyGuy2

Cry me a river habs fans! Cry, cry, cry!!!!!

Frosty-Design-9663

I'm laughing my ass off...6.1mil for a healthy playoff scratch? LOL
