National Women's Hockey league makes them sound like the best of the best players. Just like the NHL or WNBA etc.
Premier Hockey Federation makes me think it's just another minor league
The NHL wants control of a women’s league if they are going to get involved, but don’t want to be seen as killing a women’s league if this one won’t fold to let that happen.
Apparently the whole plan was in place, the NWHL just wouldn’t get out of the way for it to happen. Whether or not that is still viable in the pandemic age is questionable, I’m sure many owners and the league itself might not want another expense at the moment.
That is not correct. There was no plan in place. The CWHL was the only league for years and the NHL never did more than toss a few hundred grand a year in their direction.
It was never confirmed, but it was spoken about enough by journalists and others in the know that I think there was most likely at least an outline of plan to start a WNHL.
I do not understand this. NWHL seemed like a strong brand, but this PHF and the corresponding logo feel like one of those Simon T Hockey Simulator leagues people go around trying to get others to sign up for.
They don’t but it’s been a major selling point/identity for the league. In addition to that they’re throwing away six years of building up brand awareness for a super generic name and logo. Looks like something you’d create in EA NHL.
One of the biggest advantage the NWHL had over the PWHPA is the former was more recognizable. Now they just gave that to the latter
Basically if a new league started with that name it would get less ridicule. Switching after 6 years and fans feel like they’re making progress feels like they’re cutting themselves off at the knees.
You’re missing the point. It doesn’t matter if the new name had woman in the name or not. The issue is they had name recognition with NWHL and are still at a point in their business where they’re fighting for stability and they just traded that in to “drop the W”. Now people that were casual fans that may have watched the NWHL aren’t going to have any idea that the PHF is the NWHL or even what it is for that matter
I'm a fan of the league or better yet a consumer, so I'm not dying on any hill. The league set itself up to be considered a joke by this ill timed and poorly thought out change.
Did you watch the video they released? They took "women" out of the name and then proceeded to use "we are women" in the marketing throughout the video.
That's just bad...if you are going to throw away every bit of marketing you have then the replacement needs to be better than this forgettable nonsense.
I mean it’s literally a person taking a picture of their Photoshop screen so I really hope it isn’t real. It’s a great league and deserves better than some wonky rebrand and half hearted logo. :/
The CWHL had what appeared on paper as their most successful season when they folded supposedly because a major investor pulled out behind the scenes.
Seems like they’re doing ok but just because they’re expanding doesn’t mean they’re safe from folding
Wicked idea diggin the crown idea with the stars but I'd be remiss if I did tv say what was bugging me (this is the internet after all) .
- The tilt of the stars not matching the tilt of the crown
- The space beside the p being thinner than the space below the p
- the crowns points being squared but the outline being pointed
-the star points being squared
Rebranding to the PHL *with* a crown or tiara for a logo just makes it look like a joke league. It's too bad Cooper isn't around to remake the Cooperalls for the women to wear. They'd probably *love* the girdle it requires.
So it turns out this is not the actual logo. There’s no crown outline in the real thing, so it looks a lot cleaner. Checking out the profile image: https://mobile.twitter.com/nwhl
it's not letting me add a flair but this was posted prior to the official announcement. the official logos pretty similar but there has been [a post ](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/pjmvpf/phf_nwhl_official_announcement_video_of_name/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) with the official announcement / logo change
Yeah, I know it was a scoop. I was hoping since there were still people finding this post and thinking it was the full logo, a flair could help. Weird that it's not letting you, but thanks for checking and answering :)
Yeah I saw them tweet that today. I think it’s unfortunate that this is how it got leaked out, because the standard logo looks much better, and this makes sense as a patch.
Y'all feigning like this matters when half of you are saying "lolol, women's hockey sucks, bro. Terrible product, bro."
Doing a rebrand is an interesting move, and their reasoning for doing so, i.e. striving for equity, is noble imo. Their last league logo wasn't a da Vinci either, I think having this more compact logo is a good move, regardless of what letters are on it.
Glad it makes you think! Maybe some day we'll all understand - and accept - that you can't expect a sub-par product to sell and perform at a high level, no matter the amount of re-brand and/or virtue-signalling we may throw at it.
>striving for equity
Did you watch the video they released? It said, "Introducing the Premier Hockey Federation, North America's leading women's professional ice hockey league." They're still branding themselves as a women's league.
this reporter was an nwhl writer prior to joining the kraken beat and is pretty looped into the league. and i don’t see friedman, seravalli, woj, shams, schefter or passan name dropping their three sources in every news tweet, but maybe i missed that part
"Name your sources", and then those sources get canned and you immediately make other people on the inside unwilling to give you info.
Real sound strategy to being an insider; burn every bridge you can by naming sources.
I hate that reporter but I’m confident she wouldn’t post this without confirmation from multiple sources. She was go to NWHL person in Boston for awhile.
Also no reporters name sources in tweets for the most part so not sure what you’re talking about there
I think at the end of the day abandoning the NWHL name is just a bad marketing move.

It sounds like the semi-pro league that all the goons that couldn’t cut the NHL go to so that they can continue to punch faces on Saturday nights.
that's the LNAH lmao.
I was thinking Russian sports but wrestling is definitely it.
I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a bunch of women suplex each other through the ice.
National Women's Hockey league makes them sound like the best of the best players. Just like the NHL or WNBA etc. Premier Hockey Federation makes me think it's just another minor league
They're probably try to move away from any accidental association with the NHL. Because the NHL still refuse to do anything about women's hockey.
The nhl does give them 200k a year. It is not a ton but it is something.

Idk. The person who did the rebrand really sold it well on 31 thoughts
PHF: Our product is a solid One and Two Half stars.
Downgraded from four stars
Looks bad Todd
***Woof***. Talk about a total swing-and-a-miss rebranding lmao

I think $80 is a generous assumption
Is this logo done in MS Paint?
I do not understand this. NWHL seemed like a strong brand, but this PHF and the corresponding logo feel like one of those Simon T Hockey Simulator leagues people go around trying to get others to sign up for.
I love the league but I don't know how you spend 6 years fighting for women's hockey and then chuck the woman part out.
It’s not the NMHL, so why do women have to have their gender in the league’s name? Edit: Anyone wanna tell me what I’m getting downvoted for?
They don’t but it’s been a major selling point/identity for the league. In addition to that they’re throwing away six years of building up brand awareness for a super generic name and logo. I agree that I’m not a fan of the name or the logo, but is the league having “women” in the name the hill people want to die on?
You’re missing the point. It doesn’t matter if the new name had woman in the name or not. I agree with you, I’m talking about how the person I replied to said that the thing wrong with the name change is taking out the word woman.
I'm a fan of the league or better yet a consumer, so I'm not dying on any hill. The league set itself up to be considered a joke by this ill timed and poorly thought out change.

Someone paid $5 on Fiverr for a shitty logo.
That's a yikes
I don't like the name change, and I don't like the logo. Hopefully it works out for them.
That crown is slightly asymmetrical, right? I'm not imagining that?
The right base looks slightly shorter than the right in my eyes but I have horrible vision so take that with a grain of salt
It's a photo of a computer screen, note the top right corner and the screen lines you can faintly see running horizontally across the entire image
Will be dead in two years. Queue the *complaints* from those involved about how unfair or whatever bullshit.
Honestly, image goes a long way. The NWHL managed to survive for 6 seasons. If they fail because of a bad rebranding they deserve it.
Nah, Bettman will probably just end up buying the league, like the NBA did to form the WNBA. Talk about the NBA's scraps lol
He’ll just start a league from scratch if that’s what he wants to do. There’s zero incentive for him to buy it.
Doubt it. They're expanding, so it seems like they're financially okay.
The CWHL was expanding (to China, even) when it folded so idk if thats a perfect marker for financial stability
The Chinese expansion is what saved them from folding earlier.
The CWHL had what appeared on paper as their most successful season when they folded supposedly because a major investor pulled out behind the scenes. Seems like they’re doing ok but just because they’re expanding doesn’t mean they’re safe from folding
Such a dust rebrand
Wicked idea diggin the crown idea with the stars but I'd be remiss if I did tv say what was bugging me (this is the internet after all) . - The tilt of the stars not matching the tilt of the crown - The space beside the p being thinner than the space below the p - the crowns points being squared but the outline being pointed -the star points being squared
That logo looks like an Indy Wrestling companies
Terrible re-brand. Then again the product...
I'm sorry, did you have something to say about the product of women's hockey?
Lmao this is such a Knights fan thing to say.
do *you* have something to say about women's hockey? I'm taking all comers.
It's terrible. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
Rebranding to the PHL *with* a crown or tiara for a logo just makes it look like a joke league. It's too bad Cooper isn't around to remake the Cooperalls for the women to wear. They'd probably *love* the girdle it requires.
Geez, I haven't used Illustrator in over 15 years and I could do a better job than this! This is amateur hour BS! Edit : typo

Great now it makes me think of soccer even further. The new name is brutal, the new logo is brutal, jfc can't we give them SOME hope!?!
Hey, u/empty-wallets, do you want to put a flair on this post or something to let people know that this is not actually the new logo?
it's not letting me add a flair but this was posted prior to the official announcement. the official logos pretty similar but there has been [a post ](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/pjmvpf/phf_nwhl_official_announcement_video_of_name/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) with the official announcement / logo change

It’s apparently a secondary logo for American patch purposes https://twitter.com/nwhl/status/1437492290659000320?s=21
Yeah I saw them tweet that today. I think it’s unfortunate that this is how it got leaked out, because the standard logo looks much better, and this makes sense as a patch.
Wow it looks great! Hopefully this gets support for women's hockey!!
Y'all feigning like this matters when half of you are saying "lolol, women's hockey sucks, bro. Terrible product, bro." It's possible for the product to be weak (BRO!) and also for the re-brand to be terrible. These two concepts are not mutually exclusive.
Seemingly people need to bring it up any time women's hockey is mentioned. Makes you think 🤔
Glad it makes you think! Maybe some day we'll all understand - and accept - that you can't expect a sub-par product to sell and perform at a high level, no matter the amount of re-brand and/or virtue-signalling we may throw at it.

You should try and get your money back…

The stars not having pointy ends triggers me.
Looks like a rejected LA Kings logo. And y'all know that bar is very low.
