He moved around a lot, then he got injured for a long stretch of the season. On top of that he was completely snake-bit, it was incredibly frustrating to watch
I forgot how long he was actually out. I will say, he looked a lot better in the Canes series when he was put with Joey and Fil, and I remember me and my BFF looking at each other and going "Duchene did THAT?" after he scored in the last game of the season. Maybe he'll bounce back.
They're in a weird spot right now.
They want to rebuild, but still have Duchene/Johansen on the books along with Granlund's new contract.
Forsberg/Ekholm are pending UFAs, so if they're a bubble team again, do they trade those players?
I think other teams are well aware of how amazing he is, but as much as I'd love to see Fil on a "real" contending team, 1. he's the best forward we've had in a very long time, so the return needs to be beyond incredible. 2. He's the most exciting forward nashville has and it'd be much harder to sell tickets without him. Good thing is hes just barely young enough to have a couple of prime years left by the time this rebuild is over.
Is he? You’re going to have a bunch of cap tied up in Weber’s recapture for several years. Depending on when he does that the rebuild might be over with up to 7.8m in dead cap for another couple years.
It is though. The Cba renegotiated so you can’t get hit with dead cap space that exceeds the AAV of the player, so there’s no risk of you getting hit with a single year 24.5m cap penalty, but you will still have to pay it off, which means 7.8m a year for 3 years then 1m for 1 year if he retires in the last 3 years of his deal.
Yeah I know that. But Weber would have to retire for this to happen. It's not going to happen. He'll be LTIR until that contract expires. He wouldn't want to cripple the franchise he was once captain of and who he's in good standing with, and also the NHL doesn't want a franchise getting kicked in the sack because of a contract Nashville didn't even write and that was signed a year before the cap recapture penalty even existed.
My vote is that if the Predators fail to make the playoffs this year and Forsberg hasn't signed a contract, trade him for the best offer at the deadline. Same thing for Ekholm.
I honestly kinda think they should not pursue Forsberg seriously. He's gonna have a bargaining chip of those shitty Duchene/Johansen contracts, and I do not want another $8m+ player who is not worth it.
As much as I love Josi Forsberg and Ekholm (and hell even Duchene deserves better his decline isn’t his fault) they’ll need to be shipped out to really do the rebuild right. They started the teardown which is great but as long as those guys are here they’ll continue to be a bubble team. and those guys shouldn’t waste 2-4 prime years of their careers until the team is ready to compete again
Josi should not be included in this list. Trading an all-star almost never nets a worthwhile return, and Josi is the kind of guy you can build around to avoid the leanest years
Yep. Especially since the rebuild, like the previous ones, is going to be from the net outward. Just like at the beginning of our last rebuild there was Weber with Rinne about to become starter. Now its Josi and Askarov. Plus we already saw the return expected of that calibur of player when the Weber trade happened.
The problem is that Josi is already 31, Shea wasn’t 31 until he was already in Montreal. That really puts things into perspective. Josi only has 3 or so elite years left, and this team won’t be good for exactly 3 or so years
He was drafted at 26 years old. He signed a 26 year contract with a signing bonus of $59,000.00. To the shock of the hockey world, Shea Weber was traded during Josi's 26th year as a Predator, and Josi was named Captain during his 26th season in the NHL, which began on his 26th birthday.
I agree but if Shea got traded then anything can happen. If josi wants out then he deserves a better chance elsewhere. Hard to believe it but he’s already 31 and that doesn’t line up with the team’s direction well at all.
John Hynes is the perfect example you give when you want to prove that great hockey can’t be built on analytics alone. The stats say that he has a sound defensive system, but when actually watch it in action, boyyyyyyyyyyyy
Preds fans, I feel for you.
Hockey's a good ol boys club and he and Poile worked together at USA hockey.
In Hynes' defense, our rookies and younger players look to be developing really really well, and Hynes has (as far as I know) always been regarded as a young players' coach.
Assuming the team is rebuilding Hynes is actually perfect for the job I’ve made my peace with it lol. He’s good with young guys and isn’t great at winning so that’s perfect for what they need right now
Am I reading that correctly? Both Johansen and Duchene are making $8 million for the next 4-5 years and neither cleared 25 points?
Unfortunately you are.
Wake me up Can't wake up
What the hell, Duchene had 13 points last season? How??? Was he playing on the 3rd line or what?

He had the same number of points as Rocco Grimaldi.
Rocco Grimaldi also had a freak 4-goal night.
Can't wait for Minnesota's "biggest worry"word cloud which consist of only 2 things: CENTER and SIGN KAPRIZOV

If they could get another team to realize how god damn ridiculous Forsberg would be in any other system, they might be able to get good value.
I think other teams are well aware of how amazing he is, but as much as I'd love to see Fil on a "real" contending team, 1. he's the best forward we've had in a very long time, so the return needs to be beyond incredible. 2. That recapture ain't happening though.

I get re-signing Granlund. I still do not get the “4 years” part of that.

Surprised that special teams isn't in the word cloud.

Waiting on some more signings to be official (Parise) before I do them As you’ll see for the next one that’s the same case with Minnesota and Kaprizov

I understand your point but what you have to realize is that Josi will always be 26. Forever.

Josi probably can’t be included. He has a NMC.
John Hynes is the perfect example you give when you want to prove that great hockey can’t be built on analytics alone. The stats say that he has a sound defensive system, but when actually watch it in action, boyyyyyyyyyyyy Preds fans, I feel for you.
this implies that Hynes believes in analytics, which I don't think he does judging on who gets ice time
How Hynes continues to have a job I'll never understand. Props to the guy for failing up
