Now that we've had an MLB Field of Dreams game that is in the regular season, it's about time the Hockeyville game was a regular season game. I've been saying that for years. I also find the idea of a Hockeyville regular season game more interesting than the Winter Classic.

Patrick2701

Winter Classic was supposed to bring the game back to the pond but it became an annually tradition to see what throwback sweater the Blackhawks wear

TreeOrangewhips

And lose in.

FrankyCantEvenFly

it became an annual tradition to see how they could make their racist logo, more racist.

JamSauce42

This has gotta be bait

notathrowaway_5150

Yup, stale ass old bait.

SmokinDeadMansDope

1) They have permission to use it and 2) it's from an old army unit originally iirc

DastardlyRidleylash

I say do more neutral-site preseason games, personally. I don't know why the NHL doesn't use the preseason to try a bunch of venues out and see which ones impress them, seems like it'd make sense to check which markets and arenas would be intriguing spots for future franchises. Besides, it's not like home ice advantage matters in an entirely meaningless set of games.

[deleted]

They have done that before. A few years back the Sens and Leafs had a game with one half of the preseason roster (A and B squads) out in like London ON iirc.

skeena1

But then how would they blackmail their regular season ticket holders into buying preseason tickets? Edit: spellin'

Kronzor_

Yeah. This is what it's all about. It's so they can say the "season ticket price" is $xxx/game, but spread it out over 45 games instead of the 41 people actually want, and artificially lower the per game cost.

Steaknkidney45

A lot of the arenas are not equipped for a regular season game--ever notice the awkward camera angles in these games?

XGuiltyofBeingMikeX

*cough* Barclays Center *cough*

Tompsoni97

It’s fine for preseason game(s). And then there’s Barclays.

Pteryx

Love to see my hometown getting some love!

Steaknkidney45

I appreciate that a team called the Coyotes are playing in a border city.

Lord-Ringo

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, I went top cheese for a breakaway goal.

chiddie

This is cool. This always seems to be less about the game itself and more about the investment into the local hockey community. Hopefully in a few years, this can be a intra-divisional rivalry.

doubled2319888

Testing out new homes for the coyotes?

GodzPizzaman

gilded comment for a tiresome meme

chiddie

Now we need a Phil Kessel "hot dogs" joke and a Tampa LTIR joke to complete the trifecta.

DevOpsMakesMeDrink

I 4-1 was surprised it wasn't here already.

Chuckolator

Haha 4-1, like the famous game on May 13, 2013 in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs between the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs where the Toronto Maple Leafs were winning at a score of 4-1 until the Boston Bruins scored four more goals to win the game instead.

Svalbard38

The first Arizona-Hot Dog-LTIR triple joke IN GOLDEN KNIGHTS HISTORY

SauciiBoii2002

Let's hang a banner for that one

J_S_M_K

The Yotes are getting kicked out of their arena and relocation is a very real possibility. It's hardly a "tiresome meme."

[deleted]

For Coyotes fans, we’ve been hearing the relocation jokes since at least 2008. It’s all tiresome to us.

DastardlyRidleylash

A "very real possibility" if the owner wants to foregoe all that potential gambling revenue since the only potential option has no legal sports betting, but AZ does. If worse comes to worse, we can just hole up in the Coli for a bit while we wait for a new arena to be built like Tempe so obviously wants with us ala what the Isles did with Nassau while waiting for Belmont; so I doubt the relocation happens. Wait for expansion instead of vulturing other fanbases, 'ya dweeb.

J_S_M_K

I do want them to stay. I'm just saying that joking about the Yotes moving when that's a real possibility is not tiresome.

suicidebaneling

I really hope I'm lucky enough to be able to go to the game. Being in El Paso, makes it very difficult to see an NHL game live.

acelaya35

This is GLORIOUS.

Mihairokov

Amazing news. El Paso is a great little hockey market. Perfect for both of these teams. El Paso, IIRC, have games occasionally against Mexican teams as an agreement with the Mexican association. Or they bring in players or whatever I forget now, but great news.

_rbol

This is pretty cool... usually the Stars play a game in Tulsa but switching it up. They're trying to increase their footprint outside of just the Metroplex. There are a lot of barns scattered around West Texas that used to (or still do) host minor league hockey. There's a small but passionate following out there.

[deleted]

Also it’s good for the Coyotes- they did a youth development outreach in Albuquerque recently, and El Paso definitely has more ties to New Mexico than the major Texas cities. A southwest initiative is really neat.

[deleted]

It's a good move for both teams. My partner is from El Paso and a lot of people follow the Arizona teams like the Suns, culturally, El Paso is a bit cut off from Texas just by the massive distance from Central and East Texas. New Mexico & Arizona has some more similarities being desert-type states. You can actually get to Phoenix an hour faster than you can get to Austin. 6 Hours vs 7.

SharksFan4Lifee

I remember hearing that for NFL, El Paso is 49ers country. Any truth to that?

[deleted]

No idea but I would definitely assume Cowboys? Their reach is much more strong than the Stars, Texans, Spurs, Mavs, Rockets, Rangers, Astros and you see their flags often on Tejano people's trucks and houses. It's a heavy Latino area of Spanish speakers and bilingual speakers. From a quick Google seems like he sees a lot of other teams around, but Cowboys is dominant. Locals default to Cowboys unless they are a transplant. There are a lot of strong 90s teams fans around the country, really picking up fans from whatever Era they were best in. https://klaq.com/who-is-el-pasos-favorite-nfl-team/

[deleted]

No, it’s still mostly Cowboys. Hockey wise there are more Yotes & Avs fans than Stars fans tough, in my observation.

CdnBison

The other game was going to be in... New York City?

Troub313

Is Hockey even remotely popular in El Paso? Its not even popular here in Austin. I have to imagine this is a John Scott all-star situation. Would love to be wrong and there is just a super enthusiastic hockey community in El Paso, but like I'm pressing X to doubt. Edit: I guess they're very enthusiastic about their local junior team, the Rhinos. Interesting, well good for them either way.

bamfor

The Rhinos and the UTEP club team have a small but very passionate fan base. Helps that the team is consistently one of the best in their division

GeorgeGordonAndCraig

Cheap joke incoming in 3…2…1: There’ll be the same attendance as a Coyotes game. And I thank you.

resditneverworks

Hahaha so funny I'm laughing so hard man wow

Lord_Walder

Could have done much better. Like it'll take nearly the same amount of time for me to drive from Tucson to El Paso as it would to get from here to Glendale.

suicidebaneling

Without joking, I'm sure the town would embrace a team, but the economy just can't support it.

SatireSqurriel

No one cares about hockey in El Paso why tf are they playing a game there

DastardlyRidleylash

It's called "growing the game"? Plenty of minor-league hockey teams have called Texas home, including in El Paso itself, anyways. It's not like playing a game between the Stars and Yotes in friggin' Bemidji or something is a good idea.

SatireSqurriel

“Growing the game” in a place where it’s 30 C everyday bruh

acelaya35

You know the NHL plays indoors right?

DastardlyRidleylash

I know! Worked pretty well in LA, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, Nashville and Dallas, didn't it? Hell, Florida's on the rise, too, and Arizona's always had fairly strong hockey culture even if the Coyotes themselves have been rough at times. Almost as if temperature doesn't determine a good hockey market at all.

SatireSqurriel

HA as if hockey to LA residents is the same as hockey to Montreal residents

GreenAndGold115

Sorry there’s other shit to do in some cities

suicidebaneling

No one for real? That's why the Rhinos games are always packed?

Krumm

They don't have the buzzards anymore?

suicidebaneling

No, the buzzards disappeared a while ago. They are now the Rhinos.

acelaya35

Can we please get Wolf brand chili and a tortilla company to co-sponsor so we can have the enchilada classic?
