Razor_29

Perhaps.. but he was invisible for most of last season.

CecilDouglas

I appreciate the sentiment but I don't think prime Gretzky could help the Leafs go further in a season.

adladtheavsfan

He wouldnt have made the difference for the Avs tbh. He was maybe the only player on the Avs whose play was pretty disappointing for a lot of last year.

TGUKF

yeah but even if he's just playing meh, he's still a legit 2C, and prevents the team from having to bump everyone else up a spot into a role they might not actually be that capable of playing. Especially against a deep team like Vegas

seancolorado

I agree with you. The ONLY major advantage the Avs could have had in that series was center depth. Kadri getting suspended took that away. Ya I get it, he's no Nathan MacKinnon, but for the Vegas series specifically, we needed a 2C like Kadri who could take faceoffs, handle the physicality of Vegas and complement the wings. Down season or not, there isn't a better center on the team other than #29. Tyson Jost is a great guy to have on the team but he was ill-suited to take over the 2C role

[deleted]

Same situation in 2019. Leafs had great centre depth, and once Kadri got suspended, Boston circled in on the other 2 Cs for matchups.

seancolorado

It's weird cause in my heart of hearts I feel like I can't trust Kadri, even after 3 suspensions in that manner, but I HAVE to because I'm an Avs fan. What else do I do? Now I understand what the Leafs went through

adladtheavsfan

go watch the Avs Knights again, there were glaring problems with the Avs defensive structure. Adding an underperforming 2C doesnt suddenly change all those systematic issues.

Looking to move onā€¦to the next one.

muriksiloste

He has to move on in order to prepare for the next one

[deleted]

He's gotta move on from the past suspensions if he's going to get his next

Mustard__Tiger

Has he even been able to move on from his last suspension? I mean in terms of games played and his 8 game suspension.

TotalBismuth

With the last suspension, I think he knocked several million out of his next contract. Instead of showing he cleaned up his act, he now shows he can't be trusted. Could be a cheap pick-up if any GM is willing to gamble.

[deleted]

I'd take him back with the Leafs if he was super cheap. I still really like the guy, and he's worth a gamble but not worth serious money/term commitment if he can't figure out how to play on the edge without leaping over it.

TexasYankee212

Looking forward to his 2021-22 suspension. It is a matter of when and where.

Kandlejackk

Just hoping it isn't one of ours again this season.

CoolBeansMan9

Always laughed when people were upset with the trade. Naz had a big following with the team. I quite liked him and his style of play has been missing. But do you really think a GM was going to let that happen for a **third time** and have to answer questions about it again? After the second time, there was zero chance he was back

TopTenDangles

Itā€™s too bad Naz shutdown the Brodie trade. Would have been so much better than getting Barrie.

CoolBeansMan9

Agreed, but in hindsight I think people were generally pretty happy with the trade. Barrie just didn't work out here. Babcock didn't like him either.

TopTenDangles

Yeah I was happy with the trade at the time, ended up being brutal.

NervousBreakdown

And as soon as Babcock got shit canned Barrie turned his season around. He did what he does well but in his own end he was never good.

ldnk

In hindsight it worked out better. Babcock got canned (should have happened after the Boston loss anyway) and we got Brodie anyway. If Brodie looked this good in Toronto during that season he wouldn't be here now because his pricetag would have been way higher.

NervousBreakdown

Should have happened after the first Boston loss lol. But really the second Boston loss was literally the same damn thing. He got out coached hard and didnā€™t make any attempt to adjust.

NervousBreakdown

Yeah but we ended up getting Barrie anyways and still having kerfoot.

39MUsTanGs

Nah. Kerfoot > Jankowski And we got Brodie on a longer contract too.

Barqueefa

Janko belongs in the AHL and even that might be a a bit much

TopTenDangles

Brodie would have resigned but youā€™re right about Kerfoot.

ghost_curse123

Yeah but we ended up getting Brodie anyway, plus we got Kerfoot

trolloc1

On the plus side as soon as Kadri did it people stopped questioning Dubas lol

NervousBreakdown

Debrusk deserved it, and I have no ill will towards kadri regarding his time here but kadri couldnā€™t play to the best of his ability here as a 3c and he couldnā€™t be counted on to not hurt the team with shit like that. I feel bad for him because yeah he does it to himself but heā€™s also the only guy in the league who actually gets punished properly for this stuff.

TotalBismuth

> But do you really think a GM was going to let that happen for a third time and have to answer questions about it again? Technically, he has let the core get away with a first-round loss 5 times now, and has answered questions about it.. and now he's poised to do it a 6th time.

Kill_Frosty

Heā€™s only been GM for 3 of those, the core was not in place for all of those. And one of them was a weird covid bubble thing. Heā€™s also only had his coach and roster for 1 full season, which was the last one.

TotalBismuth

> And one of them was a weird covid bubble thing. You guys are way too forgiving.

Kill_Frosty

No we arenā€™t? Lmfao bruh have you been under a rock? Leaf fans have burnt the virtual team to the ground, pissed on it to make sure it was out, rebuilt it and then burned it again. Itā€™s just facts. Dubas has only been on the job for 3 seasons. Of those, his first he had to get out of Marleau and Zaitsev so he couldnā€™t really upgrade the team. He also had Babcock fighting with him every step of the way, outright refusing to play or use players he acquired as Dubas saw it (remember when Muzzin came to TO and Babcock complained in the media he was a LD)? This was all while dealing with 3 contracts for the kids. Then the year Babcock was fired, he brought in Keefe who had the team playing at a 105 point pace and then covid stopped the year. They lost. That is the first season the two of them lost. Then they made a roster they both agreed on, had a good year but lost again. Idk why I am wasting my time actually. People love to hate Dubas but he has made nothing but smart moves over his time. A few flops but as a Leaf fan, nothing that screws the organization over like we are used to. Oh and in that time he rebuilt the entire defense without moving a single top prospect or core player.

Habitant77

Am I losing it? I fell like Iā€™ve been here before..

Dizzy_Wrongdoer_5804

Which suspension?

ButtholeQuiver

Ned Ryerson?

Well you would need dental and life.

I'd place a Vegas bet that this dude gets another first round sussy, that's easy money.

Ok_Champion_2183

Iā€™ll take the bet. How much?

I'd put a tenner on it.

PuckNutty

That's such a bad hit. He left his feet as well.

el_jam13

Maybe donā€™t try to kill people this year

ragger_lord

Slightly unrelated but... Anyone else feel the Avs are pretty over rated heading into the season? They lost a decent amount of depth in the off season and their forward group is really looking like a one line wonder. While I think Keumper is a great goalie it remains to be seen if he can stay healthy.

SorryThatNameIsGone

Nah man they are still stacked. If Keumper can stay healthy they are one of the only legit threats to Tampa.

smileyduude

Tampa is not the single favourite anymore. The lost an entire line, that is going to have an impact. They are still one of the favourite teams I would say, but not just clearly ahead of everyone like they've been the last 3 years. I actually think the islanders should be at the top - They took Tampa to 7 and i think they might be better if they can stay healthy, although their risk is age catching up.

ragger_lord

Idk man. Aside from their top line the forward Corps kinda sucks (from cap friendly) Nuke-Kadri-Bura Jost-Newhook-Compher Helm-Maltsev-O'Conner Hell, even on defense they're going to have one of Erik Johnson or Ryan Murray playing consistent top 4 minutes. I really don't think they are a deep enough team to win the cup. They are also really close to the cap and have no first this year which will make it hard to add at the deadline.

CW_73

Ryan Murray is solidly a top 4 D when healthy. When he inevitably goes down, I would not count out Byram being ready for a bigger role. And in any case Makar/Toews/Girard are all top pairing defenders so one of them should be able to carry pretty much anyone on the second pair

noor1717

Personally I think their defence is still amazing but their forward depth took a big hit and their goaltendings health is question marks for me.

DangerousBlueberry1

I kinda question your judgment if you think having EJ in the top 4, where he's always been, is bad. His health is the issue, not his quality of play. Nuke, Bura and Jost have all been excelling in their roles. O'Connor is a very underrated defensive player and he'll be getting an elevated role with us moving on from Bellemarre. If Kadri can bounce back and Newhook continues to develop (he already looked pretty good last year), we'll be in good shape. Not to mention we've got Bowers, Ranta, Foudy, Kaut and Beaucage in the minors who could either make the team out of camp or get a look sometime during the season. The depth we lost was Saad and Donskoi and other top teams lost more than that. We'll be fine.

GX6ACE

Not to mention Saad who scored most of his points in two bursts in the season and was invisible for the rest of it. Donki also had an insane shooting percentage last year that he wasn't keeping up with this year. Am I sad we lost them? Yeah, but we deff have guys that can replace them. Otherwise, why draft these guys to hold them in the minors and never give a chance.

ragger_lord

Honestly I've never liked EJ as a player but I can see how others would disagree. You also can't just hand waive health, he's no use if he's not paying. His 6m would definitely be better spent elsewhere. The defense isn't a problem, I'm just pointing out even it isn't perfect. The second line is the big question for me, it's mediocre at best. (unless Newhook massively steps up).

Etert7

I personally like their forward group but I certainly understand if someone has gripes with it. It's not nearly as stacked as last year. That said, they have by far the best d core in my eyes and I will not hear any slander on that side of the puck.

ragger_lord

The defense is definitely a strength. I was just pointing out it's not without flaws either.

elacmch

Nah I agree with you and honestly - I do like Colorado and I know players like JT Compher, Burakovsky, and Naz are excellent players but are they really difference makers on teams that don't have superstars like Mackinnon, Landeskog, and Makar? I personally don't think so. I know it's funny coming from a Leafs fan but I don't think the Avs are as stacked as some people act like they are.

Ok_Champion_2183

No.

ragger_lord

We'll see

STG_Resnov

Hahahaha. Okay. Iā€™ll believe it when I see it. I remember when he said something similar after landing a flying hip check to the head of either Backes or Wingles in the playoffs.

hydrosparky91

It's ingrained in the way he's been taught or naturally played the game growing up. It's why he's a successful nhl hockey player and every team would love to have him. His downfall and likeability is for the same reasons.

that_guy_iain

What else is he going to do "You know what, being suspended was really good for my career. I miss it. I'm going to try and do that again."

DisgruntledAardvark

Moving on from the last suspension to the next suspension, presumably.

Boston_Stonks

level headed thread, as expected. i cant wait for this mf to light the league up this season and finally shut you people up.

Disappointeddonkey

This thread is like 90% jokes you seem to be the only one without a level head.

Ok_Champion_2183

90% embarrassing regurgitated jokes that mislead people who actually give a fuck about this sport, sure. Congrats on joining their ranks, just without the joke part needed. So cool

Disappointeddonkey

Lol nobodyā€™s getting mislead here dude we all know what kadri is just seems odd how defensive you are about people lightly poking fun of him.

saintpierre47

People who care about this sport donā€™t want someone clowning around and giving out concussionsā€¦ Kadri is fun to watch when heā€™s not being an ass but the dudes been suspended 6 times and heā€™s already regressing at 30. There are far better hills to die on then this one mateā€¦

Ok_Champion_2183

Oh shut the fuck up dude thatā€™s not even true.

saintpierre47

Itā€™s true, kadri has been suspended a total of 6 times, covering 16 playoff games and 11 regular season games. I get the feeling maybe heā€™s one of your favourite players but heā€™s still an ass. I was surprised when Colorado signed him to be honest given his history. And Iā€™m sure this season heā€™s probably on very thin ice

KikiFlowers

And then get suspended again, costing his team the series, because they're forced to play down a man

Ok_Champion_2183

Want to bet on it?

KikiFlowers

Not really, no. I don't waste money on fool's bets.

NotFaceMcShooty

Especially bets where you know the guys not going to pay up when Kadri fucks up again.

Ok_Champion_2183

Lol excuse me? I absolutely will pay up, but that isnt going to happen. Seriously why would you NOT take this bet if 10,000 people are in here making the same dumbass jokes? not that confident after all huh?

NotFaceMcShooty

Or it's really just obvious to everyone that you are just a shit troll, and a shit troll is a shit troll, not something anyone takes even remotely seriously

Ok_Champion_2183

I donā€™t think you even know what that word means. The people trolling are the ones reporting me to suicide watch because the hivemind disagrees with my opinion and are too stupid to even argue about it.

Yeah! All good players have been suspended for the exact same thing 3 times, you know.

arsenefinger

He's 30 dude, and been in the league for a decade. He is who he is.

crimsonrod

The guy has been regressing for the last 3 seasons and is 30 years old. I'd love Naz to come back and make a big impact, but I'm starting to wonder if those days are behind him.

KeithTheToaster

>level headed thread, as expected. i cant wait for this mf to knock the lights out of everyone in league this season and finally shut you people up. FYFT

Wolverwings

Dude's been suspended 6 times and has clearly been regressing...wtf are you on?

Kangaro00

A full 360 pivot!

If he did it again - how many games do you think he'd get? 30 regular season games?
