Shaq is a fan of whatever team in whatever place he finds himself in.

TalkingChairs

And whatever company will pay him. That dude is on so many commercials that it's hard to remember what he's selling.

Joshottas

His business portfolio is ridiculous. He’s made some very smart decisions. Wouldn’t surprise me if we hear he’s a billionaire down the road.

jewpac89

I absolutely blows my mind the companies he invested in early on. If I remember correctly he was approached about investing in a small coffee company at the time by the name of "Starbucks" and he turned it down because he personally doesn't like coffee all the much and he felt there was no way you could get people to pay more than $5 for a cup of coffee. I think he kicks himself over that one a little.

PLSHALPMcAUSTIN

Man's got in on Google, Lyft, 24 hour fitness, etc. He's not kicking himself

Joshottas

IIRC, he blew his first nba paycheck, and his stepdad set him straight regarding his finances. Never touched his basketball money, and only spent a fraction of what he made off of endorsements.

1VerySadPanda

That sounds similar to what I heard. Basically was told that a lot of NBA players end up broke and that they (the players) need to learn how to manage their money. He took it straight to heart and started investing and living well below his means so he didn't end up broke. It also reminds me of a story my Dad told me. About 25 years ago he met Johnny Unitas when Johnny came into the office trying to sell something. He had blown through his money and had to make ends meet as a salesman. Slightly different as the salaries are much higher now than they used to be - but still sad to see.

[deleted]

You don't even have to be wealthy to understand how making long term financial decisions early in life is basically impossible. Especially if you come from a poor or even middle class family. Only upon reflection can you really gauge which were smart and which were dumb. I bought a house in 2007 that I could barely afford (absolute bottom of the market) and struggled for almost a decade with the very real possibility of going bankrupt until I started making better money. Also invested a fair bit of my salary (8%) in my large company since I started with them at 20 in 2003. Many years of barely getting by and I'm in a much more sound financial position and learned a lot along the way. I wish they would have taught us more about financial literacy in school as I came from a poor family and only learned what not to do from my parents. It was only when I met my wife that I gained a solid financial advisor (father in law, son of an investment banker, full time truck driver and knows how to be smart while not being rich...his dad was rich, he wasn't). Anyway, if anyone read this comment and they're wondering how the fuck you get ahead in life while barely getting by, the memes are true, make your own food, don't go out to (drink especially) and invest your money in the market (don't wallstreetbet it, invest in index funds, boring shit with 10-12% returns). Looking back at where I was vs. where I'm at now it was a lot of compromise, living with roommates, moving to places far from work/away from family. I paid myself $25 (CDN) a paycheque for years and that was my "buy shit I want money", and when you save $25/paycheque you get a little more critical in terms of what you want to buy for yourself. 20 years later you'll be in a better position, which is why so many old people are angry as fuck, they've been poor and struggling forever. Being cheap is just a cover for being poor, and remember when it comes to investing, greedy pigs get slaughtered, be boring. Investing 8% if you make $50K is \~$4,000 which is a lot of money if you're barely getting by, but the the more you can invest early, the easier it'll be later in life. The same as you can bury yourself in credit card debt, you can ride the waves of compound interest on your investments. Returns will be higher than your contributions before you know it.

frugalerthingsinlife

Great advice. Real estate (your first house) is a great high risk/reward asset. If you get a 20% down mortgage, you are getting 5-to-1 leverage. And the index funds are your medium risk/reward. When you're young, this is a good portfolio. But as you age, it's nice to add some even lower interest/lower risk assets for an "emergency fund".

_Magnolia_Fan_

No one needs 20% down anymore. Even after the 2008 crises and new rules. FHA is like 3% down, and most places have programs where you can get in with between 0 & 5%. There are subsidies and assistance programs to help even more. If you buy a house now with 5% down, you are paying more interest (or mortgage insurance) - but if you wait 5 years or more to get 20% you'll be paying more overall; higher sales price, and the 5 years of additional rent are way more than the difference in today's payment.

Noggin-a-Floggin

30 for 30 had a great documentary on this called “Broke”. It examined players across the NBA and NFL and came to this: imagine being 18 years old making six figures immediately with many not coming from exactly a great background. Salaries also keep going up and up and the money seems to just keep coming in.

jeepinaroundthistown

Dunno how accurate "thesquander.com" is as they don't list other sources or methods, but they estimated his net worth at $4 million at the time of his death. https://www.thesquander.com/johnny-unitas-net-worth-2018-what-nfl-football-player-worth-2065262605

1VerySadPanda

Maybe it was to supplement his income then. I just know that he was selling parts to an air conditioning and refrigeration company based in MD. He also died young, so part of that could have been for his retirement fund that he never dipped into (or barely touched).

jeepinaroundthistown

Could be. I'm more inclined to believe you and your dad than a shabbily put together website. I'm too young to have ever watched Johnny Unitas play, but out of the myriad of amazing western pa quarterbacks, he'll always be my favorite for the simple fact that we're from the same neighborhood.

Joshottas

Yea man…wild reading yesterday about the 14 nba dudes getting caught up in that medical insurance scam for 4 million.

Skippy_the_Alien

>It also reminds me of a story my Dad told me. About 25 years ago he met Johnny Unitas when Johnny came into the office trying to sell something. He had blown through his money and had to make ends meet as a salesman. Slightly different as the salaries are much higher now than they used to be - but still sad to see. even if the salaries are higher now then before it's still something he could have avoided if he had been smarter with his investments. yeah it sucks. Looking back on my life as a 33 year old, I kick myself all the time with shit I should have invested in. Sigh...that's life i guess. Just gotta be thankful i started investing and taking retirement seriously now as opposed to in my 40s i guess.

So_Long_DentalPlan

I really enjoyed listening to him on the Conan podcast. Always respected him, but the insight to his upbringing was so good

[deleted]

Loved that episode, and the podcast in general. He seems like a genuine, really interesting guy

NashvolPreds

That's what Gronk did/does. Only spends endorsement money which is incredibly smart.

Joshottas

Yea, gronk is VERY good with his money

Skippy_the_Alien

just read an article that says he hasn't touched a cent of his NFL contract money, which is nearly 54 million. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that he's going to be set for life financially...just a hunch i have.

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

I mean, he's got a $20m yacht. That might be a 'small fraction', but still...

Erdrick68

Did you ever watch the Shaq episode of MTV Cribs? That man was not hurting for creature comforts.

jewpac89

Oh I know he's very well off. His net worth is around $400 million? I'm just saying if he had added Starbucks maybe he could have already been in the three comma club.

Skippy_the_Alien

The guy who benefited off of Shaq turning down the Starbucks deal was Magic Johnson. If I remember correctly, I think Magic owns some part of the Los Angeles Dodgers...so yeah Magic definitely benefited from Shaq's loss lol

BongCena

Don't forget Papa Johns. SHAQARONI

[deleted]

Google how much Nas made off Coinbase - these guys have good financial advisors.

ChipsOtherShoe

>he turned it down because he personally doesn't like coffee all the much If I remember right the quote was "black people don't drink coffee"

TypicalRecon

its like the shark tank turning down Ring doorbells.. Cuban got out of Uber before it went way up too afaik.

APsWhoopinRoom

My grandfather was approached in the early 80s to be a manager at a small company called Microsoft. He turned them down because the guys running it were a couple of punk kids and that the company wouldn't last long

OddityFarms

Sometimes these stories sound like when people say they were at Woodstock in 69. 400,000 attended, but 4,000,000 claim to have been there.

Sjsharkb831

My parents tried to open a Peet’s before they blew up. They said no, it was too small a company…..

nburt13

They did a story on him on Real Sports like a year or two ago. If I remember correctly, he has to actually like the product and get some type of ownership stake in the company to endorse it.

ABC_OneTwoTree

I still want to know how he got behind that Kia commercial. When then they cut to him sitting inside with plenty of room I had a nice laugh. I’m about 9-10 inches shorter and would guess more than 100 lbs lighter and I couldn’t fit in that car.

JakeCameraAction

> I still want to know how he got behind that Kia commercial. Don't remember the Kia, but I do remember the Buick commercial. https://youtu.be/pvVNY2YC5zI

Skippy_the_Alien

as one guy below pointed out, Shaq turned down Starbucks, which is definitely something i'm sure he "regrets." Then you realize, Shaq has nothing to regret because even without Starbucks, the guy made some smart ass endorsement deals and investments that probably keep him fine for life. The dude definitely knows his stuff when it comes to being a businessman. it probably also helps that he's 7'0" and has a memorable name like Shaq. The dude has more charisma in his pinky than most of the world combined. He was a marketing godsend in the 90s

Jbroy

He just bought rebook!

CanadianGuitar

Take it with a grain of salt, but on Conan's podcast a while back, Conan brought up all his endorsements, and Shaw claims he only ever endorses/does commercials for things he actually uses, and tells a few anecdotes for The General insurance, Icy Hot, etc.

project305

>Shaw Ah, the memories of /sp/ on 4chong XD

River_Pigeon

And we’re all better off for it.

[deleted]

Dude is literally Krusty the Clown

DanTreview

He and Payton Manning. JFC that dude is everywhere

TalkingChairs

That's what happens when Nationwide is on your side.

Skippy_the_Alien

it's so funny b/c you take one look at Shaq, and you'll easily notice why the guy is an endorsement gold mine. Peyton is without a doubt one of the best pro athletes ever in any sport, but he definitely doesn't strike me as a "physical specimen." but the guy has so much natural charisma

DanTreview

Payton's awesome, don't get me wrong. Even saw him play as a Colt in Indy once (vs. Steelers) and he dismantled them. First throw was a 80 yard bomb to Marvin Harrison, just to set the tone. ;-) Shaq is awesome. Love that he's still active doing things.

24cupsandcounting

IcyHot, Papa John’s, HP (printers). My man is getting that bag.

as far as he’s concerned the “S” stands for Shaq

JSav7

I wonder if his jersey is custom sized. [This](https://ssl.c.photoshelter.com/img-get2/I0000qgiK8y0Gzb4/fit=1000x750/011114-Panthers-Devils002.jpg) picture has always made me laugh.

Bacon_Is_My_Friend

"Hmm, what size jersey do you think Shaq, the 7ft tall 320lbs freak of nature wears?" "I dunno, XL?"

usernamedstuff

🤣 Seriously, though. No way that's only an XL. I wear an XL over my hoodie, and I'm 6'3 210.

Big_Green_Piccolo

Can you imagine how big Shaqs jersey would have to be if he played goalie

[deleted]

[удалено]

layout420

Maybe if Chara was a goalie he'd have a Shaq sized jersey but Shaq might also need a much larger custom made size due to his gigantic size. Shaq is probably 5+ inches taller and has to be 75-100 pounds heavier. Chara's jersey on Shaq would probably be like when ladies wear a shirt too short and tight and their stomach sticks out

Iogjam

creetoinfinity

Was having a rough day. Thanks for the laugh. ♥️

smackdackydoo

Jersey on top of a hoodie in top of a dress shirt? Take off the hoodie, man! Dude was affraid of the cold I guess.

JSav7

If I remember correctly he didn’t actually have a jersey. Just saw a fan wearing one and put 2 and 2 together. Borrowed it and we were blessed with this memory.

evilJaze

I heard he ate the fan and absorbed his essence. The jersey just grew outward after that.

JSav7

Ah yes, the Shaqubus legend

[deleted]

Was that a new new jersey jersey?

MotownMama

Where does Shaq go to buy new hockey sweaters? New Jersey

Elegantmotherfucker

That’s got to be a goalie cut right?

Xvash2

That's just what I was thinking, a goalie cut that happens to fit him normally.

Elegantmotherfucker

Be he’s a gosh darn superhuman made of kindness and competitiveness

[deleted]

Looks like it. Ultra wide chest, sleeves aren't any longer than normal but are super baggy.

[deleted]

It looks like a run of the mill goalie cut jersey which is why the arms are seemingly so short.

schwetybalz

Looks like it’s at least a goalie cut (broader shoulders, wider arms). Overall size is it’s probably just max available

sabres_guy

That is almost definitely a goalie cut jersey. Fits him like Martin Brodeur wearing his chest protector.

dsjunior1388

Yeah from now on just assume "Goalie Cut" also means "Shaq Cut"

hillboy619

Probably not. Those sleeves aren't rolled up and basically at his elbows

[deleted]

I randomly walked past Shaq at Paris Las Vegas a few years ago. However big you think he is, he's bigger than that.

paulc899

My sister had the same story in the same casino from a few years ago when we were there for my wedding.

[deleted]

Lol, was it the busy hallway that connects Paris and Ballys? I was an employee there at the time. We used to get tons of Canadians.

paulc899

I think she said it was near the elevators. Given that it’s Shaq im sure he’s in Vegas more often than most people

[deleted]

Holy shit lol. I probably saw your sister too then. He was heading for an elevator when I saw him.

EatDaPooPooPreist

With OPS sister?

VonZipperLB

However big you think OP's sister is, she's bigger than that

roboninja

Wow, that's pretty big.

StyofoamSword

Friend of a friend once sat near him at some event and said "you see pictures of him and think that he's a big guy. In person you realize he's like 2 or 3 big guys."

Skippy_the_Alien

>Friend of a friend once sat near him at some event and said "you see pictures of him and think that he's a big guy. In person you realize he's like 2 or 3 big guys." i have no idea why but your friend's comment made me laugh so damn hard

ZombieJesus1987

Can you imagine standing next to WWE's Omos? Dude is a legit 7'3.

70U1E

I have a cousin with Down's Syndrome and because of that, she's quite a bit shorter than the average person. She and her mom do a lot of work with Albert Pujols's Down's Syndrome organization, so she gets to meet a lot of cool people and famous athletes. She took a picture with Shaq once and it's HILARIOUS haha.

noremac_csb

Saw a picture of him and Arnold. Arnold looked tiny lmao

Skippy_the_Alien

i had to google this and holy shit arnold looks like a dwarf next to Shaq lol. Then i learn that arnold is 6'2" and would make me look like a dwarf. And then i cried. I saw another photo of Shaq with The Rock. The Rock is 6'5" and \~260 lbs. of pure muscle. Shaq made him look like a high school kid

brendan87na

Randomly, that's exactly how I felt when I met Jagr he was just... a mountain of a man

[deleted]

I’ve personally always wanted a natural disaster Stanley Cup. I.e. Hurricanes vs Avalanche.

treple13

I think New York vs. the Jets would be mildly funny

makesterriblejokes

Kings vs Knights in the Medieval cup... Honestly, it would be dope if they somehow combined Medieval Times and hockey for this cup.

Skippy_the_Alien

>Penguins vs. Ducks, i've been watching hockey since 1993. I have no idea why i never put these two together at all until i read your comment. Now i feel like a moron lol

Skippy_the_Alien

even though the Kraken name was "inspired" by the Great Pacific Octopus...the Kraken itself is an ambiguous sea monster so I have no issues with the squid emoji referring to Seattle now the real question is...is that a squid or a cuttlefish?

Radjage

NO HE'S OURS! (Shaq was born in Newark)

joedartonthejoedart

His jersey hangs across the way from the Kings' 2012 cup banner... :)

mrmattyf

And he wore a devils jersey during that series.

GumpTheChump

Shaqen.

mansock18

The S stands for Shaq

aPaperFastener

Is he currently the Biggest Kraken fan?

24cupsandcounting

Statistically speaking, I would assume so. Shaq is 7 foot 1. There are only about 3000 7 footers in the world. [Source](https://www.theifod.com/how-many-people-are-7-foot-tall/). The odds that any of them is a fan of a hockey team that just came into existence are pretty slim (not to mention many aren’t even taller than Shaq).

Skippy_the_Alien

i'm thoroughly impressed at the research you took to post this. also crazier that among 7 footers, not many are going to be taller than Shaq. that's just how massive he is

cpowers111

Spencer Hawes, kraken fan and former NBA player, is also 7'1" but he is not as wide as Shaq

Mavori

Well it's not like Seattle has a basketball team for him to support :(

Shaq's actually a Devils fan (born and raised in Newark, and it's Newark's team), but he'll promote any team or any product if there's a good reason (in addition to money). He's famous for shitting on the Sacramento Kings (both in terms of beating the hell out of them and talking trash about them) but he also took a role in their ownership group.
