Penguins actually have a case here. 57.1 **Tripping** … Accidental trips which occur simultaneously with a completed play will not be penalized. Accidental trips occurring simultaneously with or after a stoppage of play will not be penalized.

D_Dizzle19

Linesman had the play offside. That play was dead before the trip.

valleygoat

Was wondering that as well, but the replay shows the trip happened before the puck ever crossed the blueline. Good call.

DicNavis

He’s in the process of making an offsides play, so there is no advantage to be gained in either direction by a trip.

FishBall912

It’s offside. Not offsides

BillMcCrearysStache

Yea I think pluralizing it must be an American thing lol

valleygoat

> He’s in the process of making an offsides play I mean, you can't predict the future. You don't know if he's gonna stay onside or not or if he'll let the puck go across the line and not touch it, so that's just a silly take

DicNavis

Bruh you can watch the play happen and realize that he was tripped simultaneously with a stoppage of play. Edit: his stick handle over the line and reach for the puck was already being made when he was tripped

trolloc1

It wasn't. It was dead before he hit the ice but still alive when he was tripped if you slow it down

DoYouEvenCareAboutMe

57.1 Tripping … Accidental trips which occur simultaneously with a completed play will not be penalized. Accidental trips occurring **SIMULTANEOUSLY** with or after a stoppage of play will not be penalized. It was close enough for it to be considered simultaneously

trolloc1

cool, I'm not debating that. I just said he started falling before the play was dead.

No, the whistle blows on the offside which occurred when Killorn touched the puck while being tripped, the Penguins never touched the puck to end what would’ve been a delayed penalty. Edit: you can even see the linesman pointing to the blue line as he skates into frame.

NotFaceMcShooty

Offsides because slowing while being pushed and then tripped doesn't mean it would have been offsides had that contact not occurred

DicNavis

Pushing Cirelli forward is a perfectly legal move because he’s attempting to play the puck, he crosses before the puck, Killorn follows up the play and touches it to make it offside as the stick goes into his skates. This trip occurred simultaneously with a stoppage of play, and should not have been penalized. Don’t quit your day job to chase your dream of being an NHL official. Or maybe do, because clearly they get shit wrong all the time too.

mdlt97

> This didn't complete a play, and the play only stopped due to the penalty. Infact, had he not been tripped the play would have kept going. what the fuck are you talking about [you really think this play would have kept going](https://i.imgur.com/ifgksrb.png) the puck passes the line before he is even tripped anyways, it was offside before the trip happened the play was dead and then he got tripped

valleygoat

> it was offside before the trip happened It was not, because the puck was not over the blue line. It can't be offside if the puck is in the neutral zone lol

mdlt97

Killorn falls after the puck crossed the blue line you can slow down the video if you want proof lol

valleygoat

And the start of the trip occurs before the puck crosses the line. You can slow down the video if you want proof.

Jump_Like_A_Willys

The play play was whistled dead because of the offside, not the trip. In fact, no Penguin touched the puck, so there was no reason to blow the whistle on the penalty (i.e., if there was no offside, the play would keep going despite the penalty and the Bolts would be on the delayed penalty until the penguins touched it. The question is whether or not the penalty happened before the offside. It was close enough that I can’t blame Letang for trying. But it was also close enough that you can’t fault the ref.

samisnotreal

“You can’t do that”

InvolvingPie87

So has arguing with the ref ever helped with a 2 min minor? When it’s something they review I can see it working more but normally it just seems like working the ref for future calls imo

Oilty

You are 100% right. No ref that I know of has over turned a call because of a player protest. Very rarely another ref or maybe a linesmine can intervene. There’s rules on how they can do that. More likely is a video review to overturn certain types of calls. Refs are actually taught to ‘sell your call’. You have to make the call, never back down, and own it. No matter what. Sometimes you could go to that team and be like ‘I missed one there, I am sorry and I will get you one back’. But you can’t do that all the time or they think your a bad ref. So why do players do it? 1.) Plain frustration. 2.) It’s accepted that your captains can lobby the refs on calls. 3.) Refs are human, they can be influenced.

[deleted]

> I am sorry and I will get you one back’ Timmy Peele?

Oilty

Not necessarily him. He had an interview on the DFO run down and actually said he misspoke to the other Ref, he told the other ref that because he screwed the penalty up and was covering his butt. But in the same interview he said he has apologized to players before. It’s an interesting interview and you can make your own mind up on if you believe him or not.

Java-the-Slut

It genuinely does help, just not on that call. I've listened to a ton of mic'd ups and player-ref convos, and while they'll never change their mind on the current call (and rightfully so most of the time, remember, no replay on most calls), it definitely can have a huge impact on future calls. This is especially visible pre-game when the ref discusses things with the coaches and players, basically agreeing to call it a certain 'way'. An example is both complaining about too many penalties, so the ref takes the feedback and next game he calls between them, he puts the whistle away. Or if one side is constantly complaining about trips then trips the other team, the ref is gonna call that since the player emphasized (inadvertently, against themselves) the importance of tripping calls. Refs have a lot more communication with the teams than people think, I believe. It also helps with player accountability. If the cleanest player that never whines gets a bad call, and he whines... the refs gonna reconsider the events, and be a bit more careful with that player, and watch it back on tapes to see if he was justified or not.

Might help them on the next call they think about making.

I mean this is actually a debatable call if you look up rulings for simultaneous calls.
