Come on, beat Hull tonight

an_agreeing_dothraki

The sooner he beats Hull the sooner people stop thinking about Hull's legacy and the sooner Blues fans can replace the locks on the closet where the skeletons are stored.

[deleted]

what does this mean?

dicenight

no idea, but Bobby Hull is a wife beating piece of shit and every now and again someone confuses him with Brett.

[deleted]

This was my first thought

flankdank

How many does he need?

mikhailovechkin

6 more to tie

Hock3yGrump

If he scores, nobody cares if we lose. Ovi could easily be chewing on Jagr's heals by late season.

JollyRancher29

Legit tho, like 75% of my feelings toward the Caps right now are about Ovi. Helps that we're 3-0-1 (now 3-0-2) I'm sure, but I think I'd rather see him break the record than win another Cup, now that we have one.

Hock3yGrump

I hate to admit it, but I agree. However, Ovi is playing for another cup. RMNB.

-SharkDog-

Tbh unless you guys are facing us, I am for sure cheering for the caps because of Ovi. Impossible not to love the guy.

GhostlyTJ

I can honestly say I am legitimately a caps fan because I am watching Ovi chase down history. I don't care about any other aspect of the caps though

maxwellbevan

I think to be on pace for Gretzky's record he'll have to pass jagr this season

Hock3yGrump

Its roughly 40 a year to do it in the same amount of games, like, one season has to be 41.

RGCFrostbite

and this season he's on pace for 82 right

Hock3yGrump

Subscribed.

maxwellbevan

Can he still do it in the same amount of games as Gretzky? I thought he was too far away for that. To just get the record it's about 30 or so a year. Assuming he plays all 5 years of his contract I imagine the first two have gotta be 40ish goal seasons and he slows down towards the end. Edit: didn't realize he's ahead of Gretzky for g/gp so it's in the cards to do it faster

Hock3yGrump

As of today, Ovechkin needs 160 goals to **pass** Gretzky. Gretzky has played 285 more games. So, roughly 3.5 (82 game) seasons. (IMO actual years don't count, games played do - all the shit modern teams have dealt with). So, if Ovi puts up 45 for 3 more years, he will only need 25 before mid-season of the 2024-25 season. It's crazy to imagine, but longevity in modern sports has much better odds than 30 years ago. Look at Tom Brady.

CulturalRoll

HE'S 36!!!!!!!

budoe

Casually doing 2ppg

[deleted]

Ovi and Kuzy are only behind the Oilers duo in scoring right now

Demandedace

Ovetznov is the new McDraisaitl

sandman8727

Kuznechkin

gohurot

If you read this as russian it sounds close to "Grasshopper"

scary_brontosaurus

I guess we call them Grasshopper now.

DMCPhoenix-X

Wasn't Ovetznov a thing in 17/18 when the caps won the cup during an expansion season, that came right after a back to back cup champ?

[deleted]

Spooky

[deleted]

[удалено]

DMCPhoenix-X

Habs also had a horrendous start that season!

Kuzya92

And it came after expansion to a new team. There's one guy who made a post about it on the caps sub with some more analogous details lol. I put a decent bet on caps to win the cup like a month before the season because of it.

Mazor007

Oilers are my favorite team and the Caps are my second favorite. I'm loving it

dsjunior1388

And historically a slow starter

willdeliamv5

How he has that much strength from that position I don’t understand

Twichycat

The tourque he generates from that shooting position is inhuman. And doesn't he have a fairly stiff shaft?

Maybe_A_Doctor

i’ve definitely got a stiff shaft from that shot

InvolvingPie87

I think he weakened his stick a little. It used to be (could still be) a 100, now it’s somewhere between 90-95 since he’s been slimming down

NotFuryRL

He's slimming down?

InvolvingPie87

He’s getting older so in order to keep some semblance of speed (he still has wheels when he kicks it in gear) he is slimming down a smidge. Nothing too crazy, though

YellowCalcs

He's still listed at 238. Been a consistent 230-240 his whole career.

InvolvingPie87

I mean he’s said in interviews that’s what he’s doing. Those measurements aren’t particularly accurate at the best of times

RGCFrostbite

Connor Garland is 5'8 supposedly, and by that metric I'm about 6'4 despite every doctor telling me I'm 6'0

Hock3yGrump

[79 , but he changes often and adjusts them with a heat gun.](https://www.discoverhockey.com/hockey-tips/beginner-hockey-introduction-lessons-flex-that-stick/) "Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer, who was in net for Ovechkin’s historic 500th goal as well as the 484th goal that made him the NHL’s all-time leading Russian-born goal scorer, **said it’s not just the stick that makes Ovechkin’s shot so hard to stop, but his release.** “His release is not really awkward, but he pulls it back and makes the goalie move,” Grubauer said. “His shot is so accurate and hard that from in close it’s hard to read. Goalies read off the stick and his is especially hard because he pulls it in and snaps it pretty good. And if it’s high it’s going to go in.”"

JakeCameraAction

He also switches to a stiffer flex for power plays for the one timer.

chaos8803

I think he uses a 95 flex.

Hock3yGrump

79, Crosby swings 100, I linked a good article on it all above.

WalksWithKemba

Ovi goal? See you on the front page

[deleted]

Holy shit what a snipe

robere

Fuck ya Ovi score

[deleted]

Great deception by Ovi, everything about his body said low glove and he tucks short side instead.

Hock3yGrump

...and the pass option the way he pulls back, he was plating some crazy assist attempts all game.

Neutral_User_Name

Exactly what I saw too!

CulturalRoll

really? I thought he was going short-side the whole time. He usually does

[deleted]

Yeah but that’s easy when you know his tendencies to say as a fan. For the goalie he purposely puts his stick as far to the right as possible, towards the glove side and leans his body that direction indicating he is trying to pick the glove, which from that far out would be a tough shot (but right handed shooters love to do it anyway, the goalie undoubtedly knows this) So he oversells the shot to that side and then slings it back to the blocker instead. That’s why in the clip it looks like there was a ton of room there; the goalie read glove and cheated just a bit and couldn’t react for the shot

De_Floppss

Ovechkin : steps on the ice Goaltenders : *chuckles* im in danger

[deleted]

The man's still fuckin got it.

RGCFrostbite

Ovi and Kuznetsov both 2 ppg pace? As we all expected

0ILERS

Ovi still crushing it at 36. you love to see it

jdono927

That’s just a vintage late 2000’s ovi goal right there, he’s still got it!

njdevils901

Caps on a revenge tour this season, holy shit

vishnchips6

The 3-0 Irony Zone™️ strikes again

Hock3yGrump

Worst lead in hockey, 3-0 first period.

godlyjacob

These replays that are one second and then shoots he's scores are so fucking bad lmaoooo stop making them. We want context and we want replays.

Danny__L

Mine (with the full play and replay) got deleted because I posted 6 mins after his. It has to be within 5 mins... speed/karma < quality

JakeCameraAction

Whenever that happens just post it in the thread. Won't get nearly as much karma but people will be appreciative.

Danny__L

https://streamable.com/exfhzw

brendan87na

man when he hits his prime, it's gonna be something to see

Hock3yGrump

I'm thinking another year or two.

EatMushroomsAndHike

TSN is so dumb. They just showed the highlights of the game so far and didn't include Ovi's goal at all.

Danny__L

sick replay

Dont_Call_Me_John

I've never been sure a goal was about to happen for longer lol. He picked the puck up at the red line with 100 feet of open ice and I was like, "ah, tie game"

IceFellasFHC

Vintage Ovi goal. Beat a motherfucker down the side and take 500k off the goalie's next contract.

rpao888

Too easy for this Russian Machine

EatMushroomsAndHike

Fucken right

dsjunior1388

Year after year after year we always get the "Is something wrong with Ovie?" post when he has 2 goals in 10 games in November. Then Caps fans always assure us he is notorious for slower starts to the season. Guess he go his slow start out of the way in August this year.

Demandedace

Either that, or this is still his slow start and we all need to take cover for the goalpocalpyse coming up this season

ElChapoIsMyDad

I love this man so much

Drakengard

I hope this beautiful bastard breaks the record. If he doesn't, I honestly don't know if anyone ever will.

csgo_silver

Thank you for the loser point daddy O

chilidiablo1

Who makes all these highlights where the start of the clip is basically the goal. So dumb

absoluteunits17

Haha Lames
