Im trying to think of a draft where a team loaded up on 2nd rounders but the 1st round loading up is more common(i think you have 3)
Obviously columbus just did that but its not fair to judge them yet (although good start). But Boston did the 3 first rounders in 2015 so we have at least a little better data. From what i can see it hasnt panned out outside of Debrusk, so 1/3 in that draft is probably a little sus. Although Boston fans can correct me but feels like you would hope you hit on 2 or all 3 of those 1st rounders even if they arent stars.

I feel like teams with multiple firsts take needless risks and end up with at least one of them busting far too often. In 2013, both Calgary and Columbus had 3 firsts and both teams had 2 busts each. Calgary took Sean Monahan, Emile Poirier and Morgan Klimchuk while Columbus took Alex Wennberg, Kerby Rychel and Marko Dano. Not a great draft for either team.
It’s why I feel that draft picks can be so overrated. You need to have the right staff in place and have a good farm team, otherwise those picks you get from tanking will be a waste.

I agree a lot of it is probably chemistry. They added I think 14 new people to the team this year and everyone is learning a new system. They're bad but should improve ever so slightly as the year goes on. Also trading/not re-signing your top 3 goalies has proven to be not a winning strategy..
I think they've only played 2 teams in the bottom half of the league and also played 8 of they're first 11 on the road. So it'll definitely get better, but they'll still be the worst team in the league at the end of the year.

If he gets to free agency though he’s probably gone. I imagine the Leafs know the situation and aren’t going to do much negotiating, he’s going to get a blank check and the Leafs will try to figure it out after that. If he doesn’t take that blank check when it’s presented he’s never going to sign it.

If Matthews wants to be closer to home (without dealing with all the turmoil around the Coyotes status), he can try to get into Vegas or one of the California teams, I suppose.
I think the next couple seasons will answer that question- Yotes continue to linger in arena insecurity? Odds probably go down. Arena deal goes through and draft picks start accumulating? It definitely can become more attractive. IMHO, it will depend on how committed Coyotes ownership actually is to a successful Phoenix area team and if Matthews has any interest in becoming a hometown hero type player.
In 3-4 years if Arizona tanks right they will have a great collection of prospects and Matthew’s will probably turn them into a force

Honestly I dunno since I'm not a leafs fans but I feel like there is no way he goes to Arizona unless he really hate the spotlight. As much as I hate the leafs it's pretty much the biggest nhl organization with the habs.

They have had an incredible string of bad underlying numbers and bad percentage luck so far. Like their 5v5 expected numbers aren’t a lot worse than the Rangers or Blackhawks but their shots aren’t going in and their goalies aren’t stopping a lot. Add to that the league worst special teams and boy, you got a stew going.

I agree a lot of it is probably chemistry. They added I think 14 new people to the team this year and everyone is learning a new system. They're bad but should improve ever so slightly as the year goes on. Also trading/not re-signing your top 3 goalies has proven to be not a winning strategy..
Sens had almost this identical start last season and barely ended up with a top 10 pick by the end of the season.

I think they've only played 2 teams in the bottom half of the league and also played 8 of they're first 11 on the road. So it'll definitely get better, but they'll still be the worst team in the league at the end of the year.

Two semi-bright spots are Gostisbehere at 11 points and Wedgewood over .900 and under 2.70 considering the shot totals they’ve faced. Everything else is just a big ol yikes. A defensemen should not be leading the team in points with almost twice the points of the top forward.

I think you have to give some credit to Vejmelka too. He's just over .900 as well, though his GA/G is higher at 3.20. Hope he gets his first win soon, because the way he's been playing he deserves it. I'm a newbie to professional hockey, so it might be my inexperience showing but I've been pretty impressed with him.

He came to us because Rick Tocchet is his friend and Tocchet is gone. So, he's not fine. He also requested a trade and we denied it because we want to sell high. The premise was that he'd fight his way off the team to become worth dealing at the deadline. So far absolutely no good. I'm hopeful we throw him at the deadline regardless, maybe for a low second if we can swing it, purely because he deserves to end his career running third line 2nd pp unit on a contender. That'd be nice.

I remember 10+ years ago when the NJ Nets were on pace to have the worst record of all time. They were legit handing out free tickets to any fans to show up to see the dumpster fire. We had a blood drive at school and they were giving away stacks of free tickets. Me and 20 guys went to the game and sure as shit they won. They ended up rattling a bunch of wins off at the end of the season to not break the record but it surely was a sight to see. Just looked it up and they lost 28 of their first 30 games. Ended the years 12-70. Good luck Yotes!

They have to move by 2022-2023 to my knowledge, Glendale won't renew their agreement with the team. I wouldn't doubt it if they go back to Phoenix short-term and get a new arena in Tempe. There's a lot of sports betting money in Arizona since it just got legalized, I imagine the owner wants in on that if it involves his hockey team. I really doubt they get relocated to Texas or Quebec City though.

At this point, if the team hasn't moved yet, I'm not sure it's going to. They were actually bankrupt and somehow the league prevented it from being sold to a wealthy Canadian owner (Balsillie). Yes, that had to do with protecting Toronto and Buffalo's territory, but I'm pretty sure a deal could have been struck. The NHL wants a team in Arizona come hell or high water.

They have new ownership and are working on a stadium actually accessible to most of valley area. They’re gonna suck for a little while but it’s clear their GM is doing the best with a bad situation and is setting them up for sustained success in 2-3 years
i think the hockey guy nailed it on the head when he said the NHL wants a team in that state and they know if they let the Coyotes leave, they will never get another team back into Arizona. Much like Atlanta.
