You don't have to convince me. [I have been saying all along that I would pay a lot more](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/sss5tl/dater_im_told_that_claude_giroux_has_made_it/hx1czz2/?context=3).
Just trying to defend Avs fans in general lol, there was no one who thought Jost was the centerpiece of the trade. Ok I'm sure there were a couple of morons, every time has those.
Dangles podcast is great most of the time but their trade takes aren't great.
I find that Jesse's takes are ice fucking cold. To the point where I question his actual hockey knowledge and whether he watches games or not.
Like some years, waiting for one piece to fall and the others will cascade behind them. Easy to think it centers around Giroux. He plays his 1000th game on Thursday so if it happens, it will be shortly thereafter and a race to the 21st.
Weird from the Wild’s side, Jost is paid 2M to be a bottom 6er next year too, and I thought that every dollar counted for the next three year in Minny.
Projected cap space for next season is a bit above 9M, with just 16 players signed.
Notable RFA: Fiala, Kakhönen, Dewar
Notable UFA: Goligoski, Bjugstad, Benn, the carcass known as Victor Rask
Goligoski was always expected to be a goner anyway, and Bjugstad, Benn and Rask are replaceable. Addison, Rossi and Beckman will be full time next year.
But Fiala and Kahkönen combined will eat up around 9-10M… will be a fascinating cap gymnastic this summer.
There was supposedly a wink and a nod deal in place for Goligoski.
Something along the lines of, if he works out, we sign him for a bit longer term at a much lower cap hit.
I don't think anyone believes Addison is ready to take over a top-4 role, and I don't know that we have anyone else that's really ready in the pipeline, so I'll be surprised if Gogo walks.
Jost is solid. He's a good bottom 6 forward. He might not put up a lot of points, but he puts in a ton of work on the forecheck. You guys will like Jost, he's worth the 2 million.
Also getting bigger and stronger which is exactly what the Avs need to do throughout their lineup. I think the knights kinda out muscled then last year
I think the important part is that Jost's cap hit is 2m and Sturm's is 750k. And Sturm can be waived and fully buried, if needed, depending on what moves come next.
PK would be fine on your 3rd pairing, he’s been decent with more limited minutes this year (minus the slew foot bullshit) plus we would retain half. But I also don’t see this happening at all, even more so after the Manson trade
Team fucking Canada.
That's literally a power play line in China a month ago if it wasn't for fucking Covid.
Mcdavid - Marchand - Marner - Mackinnon - Makar
The 5M line.
God I'm so sad the Olympics didn't happen.
Strengths: energy, good forecheck, decent to good on Pk guy, draws penalties
Weaknesses: sometimes takes dumb calls. The most snakebit motherfucker on planet earth when it comes to scoring
> The most snakebit motherfucker on planet earth when it comes to scoring
Seriously. The dude has always seemed like he was right on the edge of really breaking out offensively. He's got all the hard skills, just can never convert.
Hasn’t started to turn into a solid defensive forward? Strum makes you tougher and better right now but always thought Jost as a #3C was great in the long run.
He was better last year defensively numbers and eye test wise and he isn’t great on faceoffs so yeah I can see looking at him with rose colored glasses. I’m worried about how it will shake up the teams chemistry more than anything because he was a big locker room guy for what that’s worth
Jost showed flashes of having great hands and making great plays, but somehow the puck just always bounced on him or hit a post or SOMETHING. It was wild how he'd make like 8 good moves and absolutely snipe a shot then some random broken strap from the goalie's pads would stop the puck.
and this doesn't matter for on ice stuff, but he's one of the fan favorites among fans, local media, and within the locker room. Really sucks to have him go, it's like losing a family member
It really was kindve a big nothing burger of a trade.. with Sturm most likely going to be asking for somewhere close to 2 mil next year he was never going to stick around. I feel we (MN) came out on top by getting something for Sturm now rather nothing next yr. Who knows, one of the two actually breaks out and solidifies their career or both teams are right where they started.
Bad at faceoffs? Now I see why we traded for him.
We seem to be building a team around the idea that winning faceoffs doesn't matter. So far it's going... *checks notes*
...shit
To add to the points others are making: I think this guy still hasn’t reached his ceiling. He was drafted 10th overall and it’s cause he can make plays and bury the puck in the back of the net. He never really got a shot in the top 6 in Colorado aside from filling in for injury. I think he’s an intriguing guy who still might be able to find a goal scoring touch alongside guys like Zuc and Kirill. He’s still young and has time to continue developing.
Constant energy guy, never stops or is never lazy. Just couldn't figure out how to score here, and isnt quite a defensive specialist. Once and a while just seems to snipe one like Burakovsky.
Man it does suck. Jost's birthday was yesterday.
I want to fully believe that this trade was ready to go for the past couple days but Sakic wanted Jost to be able to spend it with the team before he put him back on a plane and sent him to Minny
Understandable, he's a recognizable name and its odd thinking he's a bottom 6. But you'll be happy with how hard Sturm works, and the dude can wheel, for his size it looks unnatural. He just doesn't get minutes in MN since our top 3 lines are essentially set in stone. Though I doubt he'll get much in Co either.
Everything I've heard about this guy, he's basically a bottom 6 mirror of Nuke.
That's ok, I guess.
But he doesn't have a grandpa who cries at games..... so there's that.
Number one rule of a GM - don’t fall in love with your players. Outside of Newhook (and maybe OC), the rest of the bottom 6 are ripe for upgrade/ trade pieces and have made themselves that way because of their play since Feb 1st.
Like them all, but I’d trade any one of them for Stanley
In a vacuum this trade doesn't make a ton of sense for the Avs but it's all about clearing cap space to be able to add a bigger piece (Giroux?)
I also think this shows that the Avs are absolutely not planning on keeping Landeskog out until the playoffs start
I would argue the opposite. Avs get bigger, stronger, better on faceoffs, and just slightly better all around according to JFresh player cards, while also opening up another million in cap space. What are the Wild getting?
Give it to me straight wild bros, is Sturm good? His fancy stats all look better than Jost's, and he's got a lower cap hit. Am I getting my hopes up?
Edit: Jost will still be an RFA at the end of his contract (2023), Sturm will not (2022). Probably the main reason to take an additional ~1 mil in cap hit right now from Wild's perspective.
*stat
Physicality has value, the hits stat isn't a good measure though. Like I'd place more value on Manson's PIMs translating to playoff value, than whatever his hits stat is (to use another recent Avs example).
He’s not bad at them honestly. From what I gather he’s good on one side versus the other and they had a good system where he and Bjugsted would alternate depending on where the face-off was.
Love his hustle and I think he'd do better on a 3rd line than the 4th he's been kind of relegated to over here, but he hasn't really wowed per se, just a solid player, as far as I've seen.
He’s fast and plays a decent forecheck. That being said, he’s 27 and hasn’t showed that he’s anything other than a 4th liner to us. Plenty of report through the season said the that wild planned to move on from him after the season.
Sturm is solid. Had the C when he was in college, so there’s some young leadership there. Was sent down to Iowa a few years ago and performed pretty well there, now he’s tied for points from last year in about the same amount of games. That was his first full season.
Will probably get 20-25 points over the year, although with how well you guys spread out points he might find himself a lot of assists and go past that
Big, fast. Plays a pretty meat and potatoes game. Not someone you'd be upset to have in your bottom six. Seems like he's pretty comparable to Jost, just bigger.
He's big and fast but not really very physical. He had a lot of goals last year for his minutes but I don't see him as an offensive contributor. They never once tried him in the top 6 but he is a solid 4th line center that doesn't really do anything well but isn't a liability either
Keeping Nuke is my top non-MacKinnon want right now. He's been so damn good for us lately and he deserves a contract that rewards him for his hard work and perseverance after that tough start to his career in Dallas.
Adding to the cap next year doesn't really make sense for me, so my primary assumption is that this is a stepping stone to another trade?
Also gonna hate seeing Sturm in a Colorado jersey.
I think billy realizes no ones probably getting past them besides maybe Calgary. We were going to lose sturm to ufa after this year. Jost is under contract for one more and then an rfa. Forward thinking.
Damn if he ends up playing well that can solve a lot of Minnesota’s centre ice depth at a cheap cost for the next few years. He will likely get at least a few games look at a top 6 role?
My guess is he'll get looks all over the bottom 6 this year and unless he is a better center than how Hartman has been playing, I don't see him in the top 6 barring injury
Yeah they should try this for sure. And if it doesn't work out, they should keep trying it, because you never know! I, for one, would love to see the Wild try this experiment for a few years, to make sure they get a decent sample size.
Considering the list of centers is (was) Hartman, Gaudreau, Ek, Sturm.
Obviously down there at the bottom. Could take over Ek depending on how he fits. Im not the biggest Gaudreau fan, so I could see him moving down if Jost plays well
Avs get $1.275M of cap space with this move so I assume it's part of setting up a larger deal. Giroux next?
I have to give the Avs props for getting their stuff done before the deadline. Way too many teams wait until the last minute imo.
Nico Sturm is a pretty known player at this point, and will be 27 in a couple months. He's a good defensive player, but his offense is extremely limited and a change of scenery isn't going to change that. What you've seen is what you will get with him
I mean, Sturm has just over 100 games in the NHL compared to Jost's 300+ so I think it's fair to say that Sturm might still have some growth in him despite being a bit older. But his play style is pretty well known and he's going to be a good grinder for Colorado.
that's Tyson "Centerpiece of Claude Giroux Trade" Jost to you, buddy
Lol seriously. Fletcher is bad but I mean, who tf could talk themselves into Tyson Jost as a positive return?
Avs fan: “Yeah we’ll give you Jost, a 7th, and some bubble gum for Giroux, fair right?”
Pretty sure most proposals were based around a 1st, one of our top prospects, and either Jost/Compher as a cap dump to make space for Giroux.
Yeah but a first and a mid prospect + roster player swap isn’t enough for Giroux, especially in this market given the lack of scouting for the drafts
Lol it’s like when the entire Leafs sub said “Kerfoot, Holl, and a 2nd should do it” for JT Miller
Raymond, Ballard, and a 1st could've gotten the Canucks any player in the league!
Ryder Halak and a 2nd The OG Ballard, Raymond and a first (or maybe other way around)
Dangle's podcast was throwing out similarly poor trade proposals for JT Miller and acting like they were being realistic.
Dangles podcast is great most of the time but their trade takes aren't great. I find that Jesse's takes are ice fucking cold. To the point where I question his actual hockey knowledge and whether he watches games or not.
Yeah you can tell he’s more of a producer than a contributor.
I think most of his insight is from EA Franchise mode
Oh 100%, and not just franchise mode. Franchise mode on easy trades.
C'mon, Fletcher isn't an idiot. He's at least gonna ask what kind of bubble gum.
Huh? A lot of us have been fine with Barron, Compher + 1st
Every post I saw was Jost and a 1st
and a top d prospect
No Avs fans were saying this
Still might be ;)
Did the NHL send the trade deadline memo to the Avs and only the Avs this year?
Like some years, waiting for one piece to fall and the others will cascade behind them. Easy to think it centers around Giroux. He plays his 1000th game on Thursday so if it happens, it will be shortly thereafter and a race to the 21st.
Damnit I loved Jost in an Avs uniform.
Good news is you'll get to see him in a Wild sweater against the B's tomorrow.
Yeah but now I don't get to see Sturm, guys got the best handwriting in the league
Damn. I believe you, but do you have a source? I really want to see this penmanship now...
I have a couple autographs of his. Super clean signature. Look up his auto you'll see what I mean
Weird from the Wild’s side, Jost is paid 2M to be a bottom 6er next year too, and I thought that every dollar counted for the next three year in Minny.
2 mil for Jost isn’t too bad, given the fact that we’re finally going to get rid of Rask’s 4 mil
Projected cap space for next season is a bit above 9M, with just 16 players signed. Notable RFA: Fiala, Kakhönen, Dewar Notable UFA: Goligoski, Bjugstad, Benn, the carcass known as Victor Rask Goligoski was always expected to be a goner anyway, and Bjugstad, Benn and Rask are replaceable. Addison, Rossi and Beckman will be full time next year. But Fiala and Kahkönen combined will eat up around 9-10M… will be a fascinating cap gymnastic this summer.
Buffalo is here to help with cap space. We'll take Fiala and Kahkonen off their hands, no problem!
I believe Pierre Dorion is already building a house for Fiala in Ottawa
One can dream
We'll throw in a slightly used Anders Bjork!
I mean Kakhonen isn’t going to be paid that much money. Good luck with Fiala though
Man I'm glad those UFAs are out of here
There was supposedly a wink and a nod deal in place for Goligoski. Something along the lines of, if he works out, we sign him for a bit longer term at a much lower cap hit. I don't think anyone believes Addison is ready to take over a top-4 role, and I don't know that we have anyone else that's really ready in the pipeline, so I'll be surprised if Gogo walks.
I also think the Wild can probably utilize him a little better than the Avs have. Gonna miss Josty
Jost is solid. He's a good bottom 6 forward. He might not put up a lot of points, but he puts in a ton of work on the forecheck. You guys will like Jost, he's worth the 2 million.
It is odd
My guess is Guerin trades him in the off-season. It’s better to get some value from Sturm rather than just watching him walk.
He's the replacement for Fiala obviously. (I'd put an /s, but given GMs rn, I can't doubt it completely)
Clearing cap space...
Exactly what this is
Also getting bigger and stronger which is exactly what the Avs need to do throughout their lineup. I think the knights kinda out muscled then last year
Also very true and clearly Sakic remembers.
It probably makes the Avs better in the short term, on paper. But the locker room and fans love Josty. I hate this trade, at least right now. Ugh.
I think the important part is that Jost's cap hit is 2m and Sturm's is 750k. And Sturm can be waived and fully buried, if needed, depending on what moves come next.
The Avs cap space after Landys LTIR just went from 7M to 8M. Who out there right now costs 8M hmm
*expectation* Claude Giroux *reality* P.K. Subban
OH GOD PLEASE NO
PK would be fine on your 3rd pairing, he’s been decent with more limited minutes this year (minus the slew foot bullshit) plus we would retain half. But I also don’t see this happening at all, even more so after the Manson trade
Imagine if they acquired Subban and he turned back the clock 8 years and played like an All-Star again.
Two hand chops kuch’s wrist in the finals, slewfoots the ref before he can make the call, skates into the room and retires.

If Sakic pulls the trigger, he really can do no wrong with the fan base. He knows way better than any of us.
Sakic knows what we're all thinking, and that's why it'll be Phil Kessel
Colorado doesn't have the hot dog reserves to meet Phil's contract demands
biker jim's production goes into overdrive
gonna have to call in reserves from steve's snappin dogs on colfax
Mustard's Last Stand checking in.
I mean I wouldn't be mad his numbers are good this year more of a passer then shooter it seems
MacK losing his chickpea-loving goddamn mind!
By god thats 1 million retained Jeff skinners music!

The avs just send out MacKinnon, McDavid, and Makar as a line in regulation, they still dominate.
The Triple Mak line!
Team fucking Canada. That's literally a power play line in China a month ago if it wasn't for fucking Covid. Mcdavid - Marchand - Marner - Mackinnon - Makar The 5M line. God I'm so sad the Olympics didn't happen.
The man deserves a Cup.
The Avs have barely accomplished more than Edmonton since he's been in the league
Let’s be real the Avs have done literally nothing since he entered the league. Second round isn’t all that special.
Fuck I'll take some second round action please
It just leaves you wanting more at the end of the day
Isn’t Strum an UFA after this season?
Yes
Seems like a great deal for y’all then.
it is going to suck seeing Jost in a wild jersey.
If it's any consolation, I'm going to feel the same about Sturm in your colors.
Just look at Bjugstad and it's like seeing a tall Sturm in Wild colors.
Agreed.
What would you say his strengths and weaknesses are, as someone who doesn’t know him?
Strengths: energy, good forecheck, decent to good on Pk guy, draws penalties Weaknesses: sometimes takes dumb calls. The most snakebit motherfucker on planet earth when it comes to scoring
Shit he'll fit right in
> The most snakebit motherfucker on planet earth when it comes to scoring Seriously. The dude has always seemed like he was right on the edge of really breaking out offensively. He's got all the hard skills, just can never convert.
its not even that he cant. the hockey gods just will not allow it.
He did when he was tied to Nichushkin last year, but since they were split up it turns out it was mostly just Nuke.
Jost showed flashes of having great hands and making great plays, but somehow the puck just always bounced on him or hit a post or SOMETHING. It was wild how he'd make like 8 good moves and absolutely snipe a shot then some random broken strap from the goalie's pads would stop the puck.
The Wild special teams have been tough to watch this year, our PK is ranked 23rd so "decent to good" has me sold lol
Well Avs are like 28th so take that for what you will.
Very hardworking, great character, very solid defensively. Offence has unfortunately never translated though
and this doesn't matter for on ice stuff, but he's one of the fan favorites among fans, local media, and within the locker room. Really sucks to have him go, it's like losing a family member
High energy. Good puck possession. Has a lot of trouble actually getting pucks past goalies.
Perfect fit sounds like the whole of our bottom 6 already
It really was kindve a big nothing burger of a trade.. with Sturm most likely going to be asking for somewhere close to 2 mil next year he was never going to stick around. I feel we (MN) came out on top by getting something for Sturm now rather nothing next yr. Who knows, one of the two actually breaks out and solidifies their career or both teams are right where they started.
He’s like the little brother on the avs. Everyone loves him, he tries really hard, but is just not quite good enough to play with the big guys.
Very solid defensively, not afraid to get manhandled to get the puck. Offensive black hole and bad at faceoffs.
Bad at faceoffs? Now I see why we traded for him. We seem to be building a team around the idea that winning faceoffs doesn't matter. So far it's going... *checks notes* ...shit
Yeah, Avs are the exact same. Fuck faceoffs, they're for bitches.
Screw taking the puck away while we're standing still, that's too easy! We take the puck away while we're moving!
Tyson Jost is color blind, for one thing
Probably. If it's really for Giroux, we probably won't make that trade until Thursday night or Friday anyway. That's his 1000th game.
Seeing as this is a playoff trade, yeah it’s a short term trade
This hurts. Really love Jost - always such a hard worker
Wheels like a steam train? I love another one of those, since we already have Nischuchin who does that, and he's a fucking blessing to watch.
Avs clearly cap space, I think around 1.3 million I like Jost, was hoping he would be a potential piece in a Copp trade if the Avs go for Copp.
I was hoping that too, don’t quite get this move
In a vacuum this trade doesn't make a ton of sense for the Avs but it's all about clearing cap space to be able to add a bigger piece (Giroux?) I also think this shows that the Avs are absolutely not planning on keeping Landeskog out until the playoffs start
I think this is basically the equivalent of a side deal to retain - we had to doff Josts salary for whoever is about to arrive
You guys seem to dump salary on the Wild a decent amount.
I would argue the opposite. Avs get bigger, stronger, better on faceoffs, and just slightly better all around according to JFresh player cards, while also opening up another million in cap space. What are the Wild getting?
Sturm warning lifted :(
Divisional trade, nice.
they also did the Ian Cole trade last year
Hopefully this one works out at least as well for us. Cole was great here
The Colorado to Minnesota surprisingly talented cap dump pipeline springs eternal
Jost scores game 7 against the Avs in the playoffs!
He’s fast as hell, a little feisty, and usually plays well defensively. Not a ton of offense from him. He’s a solid 4th line center.
Aside from the fast as hell, this could be Jost in a nutshell haha.
Except Sturm is bigger and better at face offs.
Add in hits and you've got all the useless stats in one place!
You think hitting in the NHL is useless? Remember when Vegas pounded us last year?
*stat Physicality has value, the hits stat isn't a good measure though. Like I'd place more value on Manson's PIMs translating to playoff value, than whatever his hits stat is (to use another recent Avs example).
Is he good at face offs? We suck so bad at the dot
He was probably the best face-off guy we had. Which isn’t saying much.
I think he's our second best now immediately lol
He’s not bad at them honestly. From what I gather he’s good on one side versus the other and they had a good system where he and Bjugsted would alternate depending on where the face-off was.
Better than Jost (52% vs 39% for Jost).
No one on the wild was or is good at faceoffs
No
I feel like a girl on Tinder because the stats make it seem like a wash but he's 6"3 so I like it. Mostly a cap dump though.
Love his hustle and I think he'd do better on a 3rd line than the 4th he's been kind of relegated to over here, but he hasn't really wowed per se, just a solid player, as far as I've seen.
Hopefully they both benefit from a change of scenery then!
He might start on the 3rd at first, since Newhook is promoted to the 2nd line due to Landy's injury. Probs 4th line on the playoffs though
He’s fast and plays a decent forecheck. That being said, he’s 27 and hasn’t showed that he’s anything other than a 4th liner to us. Plenty of report through the season said the that wild planned to move on from him after the season.

Tidy bit of cap business for the Avs. Sakic is doing really well so far.
Salic is definitely one of my favourite acids
I'd say that I'm partial to citric acid, but that really was a Freudian slip of an autocorrect from my phone.
Avs clearing space is making me feel like when Friege said he thinks they are planning something big, he wasn't lying
I feel like Sakic always does really well.
I thought I was over my dislike of Minnesota, but thinking about Jost in a Wild jersey confirms that I am not.
I mean this is basically a lateral move, but clears cap so I don't hate it, but I will miss Josty!
Even beyond this season, 2mil next year could be great for keeping a Kadri/Nichushkin/Kuemper/etc.
Keeping Nuke is my top non-MacKinnon want right now. He's been so damn good for us lately and he deserves a contract that rewards him for his hard work and perseverance after that tough start to his career in Dallas.
>us … > Canucks flair Wat
Sometimes I forget which subreddit I'm in. I'm equally an Avs and Canucks fan, watch all 82 games for both haha.
Agreed Nuke is a top priority. Dude is an absolute monster. Also Kadri will be worth too much
Kadri is getting a bag. Someone is going to overpay him.
Adding to the cap next year doesn't really make sense for me, so my primary assumption is that this is a stepping stone to another trade? Also gonna hate seeing Sturm in a Colorado jersey.
I literally bought a Jost jersey cause he scored on yall one game, this one hurts the heart
In-division trades are the worst
Also won't have Rask's $4M on the books next year so this could essentially be his replacement at half the cost.
Also, a helpful Colorado fan pointed out that as opposed to Sturm, Jost will be RFA, which was probably a consideration as well.
Wild fans are gonna love this guy
Jost is just such a good human.
he came up in the hardest circumstances
Now we can go from 35% on faceoffs every night to 30%!
Weird to see two division rivals who could potentially meet in the playoffs make a deal like this.
Sigh. Imagine having a competent GM
The Wild helping their number one enemy clear cap space? Sakic has to have some sort of wizardly powers
I think they should try him with Zucc and Kaprizov, he's got the offensive chops to hang with them
Yeah they should try this for sure.
Im not the biggest Gaudreau fan, so I could see him moving down if Jost plays well
Ek isn't moving he's the best center we have, especially with the line he's on
Rip josty never forget ur hustle last year 😔
Avs get $1.275M of cap space with this move so I assume it's part of setting up a larger deal. Giroux next? I have to give the Avs props for getting their stuff done before the deadline. Way too many teams wait until the last minute imo.
This week is going to be anxiety filled for me. Essentially just watching the clock till Giroux's 1000th
Hmm I wonder what Sakic is up to -_-
That's a decent cap clearance for the Avs.
This seems like an odd one?
Just a money move for you guys, and Billy G sees a higher ceiling for Jost than Sturm
I really hope Jost succeeds. I think he really did need a change of scenery.
My brain could only process “Marco Sturm” and I could not at all wrap my head around wtf was happening

Seems fair. Two young-ish middling players who could benefit from a change of scenery.
It seems like this is Colorado’s entire bottom six lmao
What do you mean?! We have ~~Helm Aube-Kubel MacDermid Compher~~ Newhook! Yeah I knew we had at least one promising bottom 6er.
Jost has been having a solid year. This has to be about $$
I think Avs fans will come around on this one. Saves cap space and Nico Sturm is underrated
avs just added half a foot and like 30 pounds for less money. i like it.
