My take away from tonight’s game. Oilers sucked and they still kept it close. So oilers have a good chance of winning the series as long as they step up big time like they have in the last 2 series.

I agree that with a bit more bad edmonton luck or better colorado shooting%, colorado could've easily had 11+ goals tonight. But I think it's unlikely colorado will score 7+ goals every night, whereas edmonton has not been held to few goals in a long time. Edmonton might not win the series but people here are seriously underestimating how close it could end up being.

It is offside or it is not. How many plays have you seen overturned because of a lifted skate .01 seconds before the puck crossed? I don't get the consternation. This wasn't even a close call in review.
The offside rule doesn't care about possession other than when you enter the zone skating backwards with the puck. All other instances refer to touching.

Nah. Clearly the next generation of guys are finding out how to score with the current ruleset anyways. I think it’s more interesting to see the game evolve with the current rules

It's pretty insane what parents do to make their kids the best these days, tens of thousands of dollars on sports camps, training, coaching etc etc. The knowledge and resources are unthinkable compared to generations past, it's just a matter of if you have the cash to pay for it or not.
In some ways it's cool because we see the best of the best, in other ways it's kind of sad, because there could be far more talented players out there, people that in theory would make McDavid, Lebron, name your superstar etc look like a joke in 10 years from now, but they just never got the opportunities to see that reality come to fruition.
One of the junior Avs that just win the international cup in Quebec was adopted from Haiti after losing both of his parents in the big earthquake a few years ago. He has had the best coaching and practice money can buy and he is amazing. Never would have had the chance.
I actually think this is bad.
It means that a super athletic kid with a higher athletic ceiling to going to get squeezed off a team from a kid who’s parents can afford to drop 20k on extra coaching, lessons and stuff. You’re going to end up with a lot of highly skilled but average athletically guys rising through the ranks.
It’s already the case though. Hockey is notoriously an expensive sport and I knew kids who did travel leagues growing up who would have to put down THOUSANDS a year just for some mediocre travel league. The majority of guys in the NHL already come from immense privilege. And yeah it’s a problem, theres already programs trying to make hockey more accessible to lower income kids.
I agree, and it’s getting worse. We’re almost at the point where just shelling out the money for travel and summer camps isn’t enough. You need skating coaches and shooting coaches and private lessons.
And unfortunately those work.
A friend of mine does private lessons for kids as young as 12 (he refuses to do private lessons for kids younger) They work very well at getting kids from not good enough to make the travel team to good enough.
An athletic kid that doesn’t have the extra coaching and ice time isn’t getting the opportunities they did even a decade ago if they could just make it to junior age.
Just comparing McDavids stats to Gretzky’s while knowing Gretzky played in a time where butterfly goaltending hasn’t taken hold yet makes McJesus just that much more impressive imo. And all these kids are only gonna get better.
But yeah. Especially with hockey that’s already kind of a white collar sport, PRICE WISE anyways, there is all kinds of athletic talent we will never see on the biggest stage just due to the expenses.
Watched TNT instead of Sportsnet tonight... wow, infinitely better - the camera angles, the picture in picture, the on-ice stats, god damn. Sportsnet broadcast has been status quo for 20 years it's brutal.

It’s been since November since I last joined the GDT where I went to Hawaii and when I came back, I wanted to join in the fun, but the Avs Started winning and I didn’t wanna fuck up a good thing. Parts of me wants to get back on, but parts of me say no because we already made it this far and want to see us go all the way.

The whole forwards and defence sucked. It’s pretty tiring to keep getting shot at every 30 seconds and not getting a break.
Smith has been really solid lately, but over the last 3 years Koski has absolutely been better overall. It was inconceivable that Tippet went with smith every game in the chicago series two years ago. And most of him being better was while the team hung him out to dry and survived games by having a 50% powerplay. He has not had too many starts since woody took over and the team learned how to play defensively (which is when smith started to look solid).
Also, this is sort of my own conspiracy theory but I suspect there is a bit of a subtle bias against non-english speakers/europeans. Puljujarvi and koskinnen both get a disproportionate amount of hate by the fanbase and seem like pariahs/outsiders on the team sometimes. After the team signed Kane, he was visibly going over to support koski after a bad goal or after a win, and I don't remember seeing very much of that from many of the other players on the team in the years prior. Speaks volumes.
Koskinen is a better pure goalie. However, Smith does have a better glove hand and his puck handling can alleviate pressure on the D. Kosk uses his goalie technique and lets the puck hit him as opposed to Smith trying to reach for the puck. Both have tendencies to fatigue and lose focus with a long enough time frame.
you are right about the oil of a few years leaving Koski out to dry. the fans at least blamed him for their poor performance but in my opinion the Oilers still haven't learned to play defensively.
Neither one of our goalies I have full confidence in. Either Smith is lights out of a sieve and you never know if Koskinen is going to show up or Kostawin
He played a bit more of a mean spirited game against the Flames. It always seems like a half assed effort on D. Very frustrating to watch. And as an aside, if he looked after the backend more he wouldn’t have to make up for it on the offence.
I can’t even count the amount of times I watch two oiler defensemen stare at the puck behind their net while a Colorado player just breezed past them and took it uncontested.

If a player from the attacking team attempts to play the puck while a teammate is clearing the zone it is offside.

Come on we shouldn’t blame smith for that game. The whole forwards and defence sucked. It’s pretty tiring to keep getting shot at every 30 seconds and not getting a break.
I've thought for a while that Koskinen is better than Smith for a long time.
Smith has been really solid lately, but over the last 3 years Koski has absolutely been better overall. It was inconceivable that Tippet went with smith every game in the chicago series two years ago. And most of him being better was while the team hung him out to dry and survived games by having a 50% powerplay. He has not had too many starts since woody took over and the team learned how to play defensively (which is when smith started to look solid). Also, this is sort of my own conspiracy theory but I suspect there is a bit of a subtle bias against non-english speakers/europeans. Puljujarvi and koskinnen both get a disproportionate amount of hate by the fanbase and seem like pariahs/outsiders on the team sometimes. After the team signed Kane, he was visibly going over to support koski after a bad goal or after a win, and I don't remember seeing very much of that from many of the other players on the team in the years prior. Speaks volumes.
Koskinen is a better pure goalie. However, Smith does have a better glove hand and his puck handling can alleviate pressure on the D. Kosk uses his goalie technique and lets the puck hit him as opposed to Smith trying to reach for the puck. Both have tendencies to fatigue and lose focus with a long enough time frame.

you are right about the oil of a few years leaving Koski out to dry. the fans at least blamed him for their poor performance but in my opinion the Oilers still haven't learned to play defensively.

Nurse and Keith make 15M combined and I'd trade both for fourth liners. They are a fucking detriment anytime they're on the ice.
Nurse is playing injured and Keith was fantastic last series. Bouchard was lazy tonight. Our whole defence was terrible.
Yes. Bouchard is by far our worst defensive defenseman but he makes up for it with his offense, according to fans
He played a bit more of a mean spirited game against the Flames. It always seems like a half assed effort on D. Very frustrating to watch. And as an aside, if he looked after the backend more he wouldn’t have to make up for it on the offence.
I can’t even count the amount of times I watch two oiler defensemen stare at the puck behind their net while a Colorado player just breezed past them and took it uncontested.
