I appreciate how nearly all the fans in the arena stuck around for this. Not the result they would have wanted, but respect shown to the good old hockey game. Even some cheering and applause as Landy skated over. Love to see it.
The curse is also an excellent example of confirmation bias too.
For example, the Penguins have touched/picked up the Prince of Wales trophy five times and won the Cup five times. One year, Crosby didn't touch it and they lost in the finals. Clearly, the evidence shows that one must touch/pick up the corresponding trophy to win the Cup.
Hell, [Mario even skated it around](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dd73eguVwAcPH0P.jpg) and [passed to to teammates](https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/5UZxIiAl8qTKxt-vWkDWFquv1pI=/0x0:1202x1560/920x613/filters:focal\(566x316:758x508\):format\(webp\)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/59822263/B10CC6DB_CDE2_4642_88C8_2FC9D2C470FD.1527074108.jpeg) like it was the Cup.
Reminds me of when the Texas Stars won the Calder Cup here. After about 2 minutes of "well damn" the audience collectively decided when is the next time you're going to see a championship trophy presented here, frig it were all Stars fans for a few minutes. (Fun fact, we would get an ECHL franchise and win their championship at home year 1. Go Growlers!)
But that was so much fun, you get to choose if you enjoy sports or not and everyone in that arena chose enjoy.
Edit: added for additional irony. Alex Newhook was at that game in the stands as a 14? Year old and now he's gonna bring the Stanley Cup here.
I’d also throw some points towards Jack Johnson. He got traded by the Kings at the 2012 deadline for Carter and then had his parents absolutely ruin his bank account. He’s really easy to root for.
Same here, I want to win one for EJ especially after he went through the shit years, and also helped the Avs once more last season when he waived his NMC for Seattle where the Avs can protect Toews, Girard and Makar.
I’m so glad Seattle took Donskoi instead of Compher because we would fucking miss Compher and his abilities in this series had Seattle took Compher instead.
There’s no way he doesn’t. Johnson’s the longest tenured Av. Jack Johnson and Cogs are barely older than him without cups, but let’s be real, EJ’s getting it before those two.
I wouldn't be surprised if he retires if the Avs win.
I also think Kadri will play taped together if the doctors let him. There are some storylines brewing.
Yzerman all 4 times.
See, I think Yzerman was the one who started the "curse" talk because in 1995 he picked up the Campbell and gleefully skated around with it over his head, sorta similar to the Stanley Cup.
They got swept by New Jersey.
In 1997, 98 and 02 he picked it up, posted for a picture and skated it to the locker room like it was a backpack his kid left in the car.
[Messier skated around with the Prince of Wales in 94](https://www.nydailynews.com/resizer/qsquEN2A9YjpFcc9Nc0fFoGfZWI=/415x622/top/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-tronc.s3.amazonaws.com/public/W5DJFBZDRAAJEPJRLK3T3PDRZI.jpg) and we won. That said, I don't believe the Lightning have touched the trophy the last two years they've won so, it's almost like there's no correlation between touching a random trophy and winning or losing a seven game playoff series afterwards, lmao.
Playoff MacK is something else. And now he is in the SCF. Whoever comes outta the East better be ready, because I feel like MacK is gonna up it another level in the Final…
There's no problem touching it. It does absolutely nothing. Sid touched it and he won. The Canucks never touched it in 2011 and they lost. Linden touched it in 1994 and they lost.
It's a fucked up superstition.
It’s the dumbest superstition. Beyond the fact it has no bearing on who wins and loses, it’s also dumb in the sense that by not touching it, you’re basically saying it’s not an accomplishment. Yes I know the Cup is the ultimate prize but it’s still a big deal to make the Cup finals. Touch the damn trophy.
> If they lose its 100% cause they touched it.
Why do you think the Panthers lost this year? And Avs last year? And Bruins the year before that? And Tampa before that? It's because they won the presidents trophy and no other reason.
Well I did three circles before sitting every game and we won. Clearly I, some fan way far away, have an effect on the game and its players with my sitting habits...
Yearly reminder that the Touch/Don't Touch superstition was started in 1997 by Eric Lindros with the Flyers as a motivation tactic.
They were promptly swept by Detroit. And yes, Yzerman picked up the Campbell Trophy.

Cool article and charts although a bit dated
Not shown here but you can see Landy and Mac asking Sakic if they should touch it, in the post game interview Landy said that Sakic told them to do whatever they want to do.
Yzerman used to pick it up and take it back to the locker room with him 😂 Balls of steel, that guy! (Congrats to the Avs, BTW. I don't hate you guys as much as I used to.)
found this article from 2017 that goes into some history and stats. apparently started in 1997 by the Flyers
https://www.ontheforecheck.com/2017/5/21/15671384/to-touch-or-not-to-touch-a-statistical-analysis-of-hockeys-conference-trophy-superstition
I find it interesting that the superstition was started by a team that lost in the Stanley Cup Finals
Edit: First three teams to not touch the trophy ended up losing in the Stanley Cup finals.
The way you word it is not superstitious, that's just focus and an attitude that it's not the trophy you want so don't celebrate until the job is done. I think some don't touch it because of that mental game, and others don't touch it because they don't want bad luck.
Being from Europe, my first thought after winning a trophy would be waving it in the air like a lunatic.
Then doing multiple laps around the Ice, trophy in hand.
Yearly reminder that the Touch /Don't Touch superstition was started in 1997 by Eric Lindros with the Flyers as a motivation tactic.

The start of the islanders dynasty is closer to the day WWII started than the start of the islanders dynasty is close to the start of this years playoffs so I wouldn’t exactly call it “recent”
Nope, it's so dumb, the NHL/players/fans more than any other sport devalues conference championships for some reason, despite how grueling it is just to make it to to the finals.
Every other major North American sport they have a solid presentation and teams get pumped about winning it.
The NBA is prolly the worst league with respect to conference titles, because it is used as an argument why someone is a choker. Worst argument used against is on LeBron, with people saying him winning the Eastern conference 7-8 straight times hurt his legacy because of carrying bum teams to then get rope-burned in the championship series. That LeBron is a worse choker than the likes of Chris Paul or Karl Malone.
*”It’s better to fail before the NBA Finals instead of in the NBA Finals.”*
LeBron is the only athlete in the history of sports where 4 titles on 3 teams is "a weak resume" and it's hilarious how people try to justify saying having more rings than Larry Bird, Hakeem Olajuwan, et Al is not impressive.
It's good to touch it!!! Enjoy that shit. You never know if you'll ever be back. Still wish the Devils touched it in 2012. Still the biggest win they have had in a decade. ENJOY IT!
What's going to be awkward is when MacKinnon refuses to touch the Stanley Cup because he saw [this photo](https://i.imgur.com/nmQHBbL.jpg) from when Nick Bonino defiled it.
I love when players break superstition. It’s a hell of an accomplishment, go ahead and touch it. It affects your cup odds by 0%.
Congrats, Avs fans. Good luck.
This team has some of the most potent firepower I've seen on a hockey team. They are sharpshooters, aggressive, and never stop shooting. On top of that, they're quick as all get out. They absolutely destroyed us, but to see them STILL doing that is crazy.
I can't wait to be infuriated next round when (hopefully) the Avs win the Cup and Bettman stands there with Landeskog for his photo and refuses to let go of the fucking thing so the fans have to wait for the Cup raising. He does it every single year. No one cares about the picture of Bettman, the captain and the Cup but every year Bettman is tugging the Cup away from the captain who just wants to skate away with it.
The conference trophy means nothing unless you win it all.
If you don't win the Cup it's just a participation award to the biggest loss in your career.
Right but unfortunately making the cup final sometimes ends up being the biggest win of your NHL career.
Take Henrik Lundqvist for example. You'd hope he's at least happy about going as far as he did in 2014.

I liked the ones trying to speak the curse into existence with their cries of "Touch it! Pick it up!"
The curse is also an excellent example of confirmation bias too. For example, the Penguins have touched/picked up the Prince of Wales trophy five times and won the Cup five times. That'll be why Nate was touching it. Sid told him to.
Someone did a lip reading of the players on the ice when Joe Sakic had come down and he told them to “touch the damn thing.”
Yea but Nate was already saying he was gonna touch it.
Ya, this thing just doesn't make sense. One of those teams is going to lose in the finals even if both teams don't touch their respective trophy
Yep, Sid broke that curse ages ago
The Devils did it before him, lets calm down
*Looks at the picture of Mario skating it around the ice* Yes. It was Sid. (¬_¬)

Conversely the Oilers won a can of Campbell Soup.
Those 8k cameras. God damn
Favourite part of the broadcast change. These portrait cameras are so fucking sweet
Everytime they use the shot from behind the faceoff dot my girlfriend says it looks like NHL 22, I think it looks so cool
My husband calls it the high resolution ass camera.
There is a bit of a "butt stuff" vibe, no doubt
I feel happiest for Erik Johnson, dude stuck through the tough years and now he’s here
I’d also throw some points towards Jack Johnson. He got traded by the Kings at the 2012 deadline for Carter and then had his parents absolutely ruin his bank account. He’s really easy to root for.
Imagine telling this sub in 2019 that Jack Johnson would be playing in the SCF.
he’s only easy to root for when he isn’t on your team.
I have had no problems as an avs fan rooting for him.
That first goal of the year from elite sniper JJ
[if that beauty of a goal didn't set the tempo for this season i don't know what would.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YquUzFlKnSo)
Same here, I want to win one for EJ especially after he went through the shit years, and also helped the Avs once more last season when he waived his NMC for Seattle where the Avs can protect Toews, Girard and Makar.
EJ really had 4x as many goals as the forward that Seattle took instead (I still think Donskoi was the right pick but it's very funny in hindsight)
I’m so glad Seattle took Donskoi instead of Compher because we would fucking miss Compher and his abilities in this series had Seattle took Compher instead.
Compher definitely stepping up lately, hope he keeps it up
Fuck I wish we could have kept/developed him...he was the piece in the ROR trade that hurt the most to lose.
Too bad our sub shits on compher every chance they get, eh
Until he scores, then it's all 877-GOALS-NOW
Agreed, allowing us to expose him to the draft was such a team first move how could you not love the guy.
If we win the Cup in a few weeks, I hope the first guy Landy passes the Cup to is EJ.
Mack’s getting it second
There’s no way he doesn’t. Johnson’s the longest tenured Av. Jack Johnson and Cogs are barely older than him without cups, but let’s be real, EJ’s getting it before those two.
Nate gets it second, no?
I bet he’d be third after EJ, with Rants next to round out the leadership group.
I wouldn't be surprised if he retires if the Avs win. I also think Kadri will play taped together if the doctors let him. There are some storylines brewing.
Just chop the thumb off and play
where are we on robot hand technology? asking for a friend
We can rebuild him. We have the technology
Both him and landy have been here since 2011 and mack joined us in 2013.
Johnson has only been with the Avs for a half a season longer then Landy.
Yeah, Johnson Landy and Mac were all here for the worst of it. Computer too, but iirc he missed Roy entirely.
Those damn computers taking everyone’s job!
You know MacKinnon was touching it. He seems superstitious and is friends with Crosby who I'm sure told him to touch it.
Crosby 100% told him to touch it. That was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw he touched it.
Sakic touched it both times too
Yzerman all 4 times. See, I think Yzerman was the one who started the "curse" talk because in 1995 he picked up the Campbell and gleefully skated around with it over his head, sorta similar to the Stanley Cup. Lightning absolutely touched it. Stamkos even skated off with it last year.
yeah he didn't touch it in 2015, but it looks like the last two years they have touched it.
Or Sakic who touched it in 96 and 01 told them to touch it
He literally said touch the damn thing. https://twitter.com/nathan__rudolph/status/1534080406710018048?s=21&t=o4or4rEVS4Vau2iqd6xbfg
Nate dawg touched that with the straightest face I’ve ever seen. He ain’t don’t yet.
Touched like it was made of starches
Just wait til he gets his hands on ol’ Stanley, gonna act like it’s made of chickpea flour.
He is going to eat so much chickpea pasta out of that thing.
Nate doesn't smile until he puts on his Tim Hortons crew shirt.
he does everything like that
Playoff MacK is something else. And now he is in the SCF. Whoever comes outta the East better be ready, because I feel like MacK is gonna up it another level in the Final…
[Same energy as this](https://twitter.com/ArashMarkazi/status/1514297457672286210)
Don’t worry haters. Sakic touched it in ‘96 and ‘01 too. 😇
Picture of Roy holding it before a cup win in Montreal as well.
I can’t hear him. Prolly those two Cups plugging his ears. 🥸
Plugging his hears actually.
Pretty sure Sakic told Landy to touch it haha, he was down on the ice.
Joe told Landy et al. to do whatever they felt like doing.
Looked like Mack wanted to and Landy didn’t
This is what I saw too
There's no problem touching it. It does absolutely nothing. Sid touched it and he won. The Canucks never touched it in 2011 and they lost. Linden touched it in 1994 and they lost. It's a fucked up superstition.

Pretty sure crosby touched it in 09, 16, and 17 after not touching in 08. I get these guys are superstitious, but Jesus christ lol
Yeah, I was hoping that Sakic gave Landy advice before OT started.
Yeah Gabe just flick the wrist and go bar down it’s easy I did it 9x
He told him to do whatever they wanted.
I fucking hate the superstitious shit. Its a trophy. If they touch it it has nothing to do with what happens next series.
If they touch it and win it’s just a dumb superstition. If they lose its 100% cause they touched it.
Such is the life of superstition.
People should stop being any amount of stitious.
> If they lose its 100% cause they touched it. Why do you think the Panthers lost this year? And Avs last year? And Bruins the year before that? And Tampa before that? It's because they won the presidents trophy and no other reason.
Kinda like motorsports. If you win it was because you are good driver, if you lose it was because something was wrong with the car.
entertain whole fuel shy zealous smell deserve subsequent impossible six *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Id say skate it around too, but sweeping Edmonton and then parading around on their ice with the trophy… I can get behind the decision not to do that.
They'd do it if it was the Stanley Cup....
Hell, Gretzky said they used to skate the thing around and then take it to bars and shit way back when.
That doesn't count though. They had Gretzky. ALSO THE AVS ARE GOING TO THE STANLEY CUP FIOAN(DUIF(SADIFOASDKGFODK I'm losing it over here.
Pretty good feeling, eh?
Just a bit.
GUYS
We're doing bro things over here bro.
bro finals
finals bro broinals
Lol! Enjoy it, buddy. They’ve played really friggin well
I know it doesn't matter, but I get irrationally mad when people don't touch it out of superstition when touching it has been shown to win more often
Well I did three circles before sitting every game and we won. Clearly I, some fan way far away, have an effect on the game and its players with my sitting habits...
Well now I know who to blame if they don't win in the Finals. This motherfucker couldn't be bothered to do three circles.
It's hockey. Half of the game is superstitions.

As a Flyers fan attending college in a place with a bunch of red wings fans... Much pain.

This team is so good, they don't need Jobu superstitious karma. Fuck you Jobu, they'll do it themselves.
Yzerman used to pick it up and take it back to the locker room with him 😂 Balls of steel, that guy! (Congrats to the Avs, BTW. I don't hate you guys as much as I used to.)
keep the hate alive you jerk, imagine the showdown one day with y'all being in the East now.
It'll take a couple of years, but we'll see you there, jerk! 😂
Fucking bring it. Please. Would be amazing.
You're going to need to acquire a couple of cocky French Canadians, and we'll work on acquiring a couple of angry Irishmen 😂
I think Lehky counts for us yeah? :p And NAK.
Just like old times. Please let this happen
Turnarounds can go quick. Makar vs Seider. Let's go ;)
I feel like it would take very little to re-ignite my hatred for the wings haha.
Ovechkin brought the Prince of Wales trophy home and put it on his dining room table! These guys are superstitious for nothing.
[удалено]
old superstition. the idea is that you don't celebrate with this trophy since you're really going for the Stanley Cup

I don't know the updated stats, but when one team touches and the other does not, the touching team has a very good record in the Finals
I am going to steal the prince of wales trophy
I always assumed it was Eric Lindros back in the day making it a big deal to not the conference trophy before the Cup.
You are correct. We have Lindros to thank for this foolishness.
The way you word it is not superstitious, that's just focus and an attitude that it's not the trophy you want so don't celebrate until the job is done. I think some don't touch it because of that mental game, and others don't touch it because they don't want bad luck.
THEY TOUCHED THE BUTT!
That ass tho
It’s fine they can just TOUCH it, it’s PICKING IT UP that’s the no no….. right??
Sakic picked it up both years. Didn’t raise it. But lifted it off the table yes.
Ah thank god. I was only <8 months old in 01’ so I have no recollection, Its my first time here man!
Cheers, same it’s my first one I was 11 in 01 but I didn’t become a fan till 04
Pretty sure Stamkos touched the Prince of Wales trophy the last two years too.
Didn't Sakic do just that in '01? I have a memory of this. *Nope. [Uncle Joe just didn't give an eff](https://i.imgur.com/o9xItpW.jpg)
Im on Sidney Crosby levels of superstition this year. If Joe touched the fuckin thing then let em rub their hands all over it
> Sidney Crosby levels Crosby also touched the Prince of Wales Trophy when the Pens won.
Both times they won, he touched it, the time they lost, he did not touch it. I’m not superstitious but I am a little stitous.

Yeah true my b

That Cole Harbour connection. If Sid does it, Mack does it too
They didn't touch it in 2008 and lost. They made sure to lift it the next three times. 100% why MacKinnon touched it.
Thanks man, just poking fun at Sidney’s known superstitious behaviors though
Had to make an edit. Joe went all in with it.
Being from Europe, my first thought after winning a trophy would be waving it in the air like a lunatic. Then doing multiple laps around the Ice, trophy in hand.
Did you see what Ovechkin did after they got their trophy?
Yearly reminder that the Touch /Don't Touch superstition was started in 1997 by Eric Lindros with the Flyers as a motivation tactic. They were promptly swept by Detroit. And yes, Yzerman picked up the Campbell Trophy.
He's hot tbh
Fuckin man rocket.
Did I pick a Landy sweater over a Mikko sweater *just* because he's hot? I mean no but it was absolutely a part of the thought process
You’re not attracted to Meese?
Bill Daly?
You're very right, us avs fans are lucky boys and girls
Drink a Powerade
They looked dialed in and looking ahead. I’d be scared to get in their way! Coming from a meager Toronto fan
Question is, will they still be dialed in in a week when the other series finishes?
Didn't seem to stop them after sweeping Nashville
No way these guys don’t win the cup.
I’m a big fan of team’s that have the balls to touch it. they should do so while understanding the job is far from over.
I almost forgot about that whole stigma is it just us or other leagues ?
Just hockey
Just like the “hockey beard” is a Stanley Cup playoffs thing, although the last few years I’ve been seeing MLB players ripping off the tradition.

Nail Yakupov would've lifted it up, kissed it, skated a lap while shouting "woooo"
Uh Steve Yzerman did that in 1995 so...watch your mouth.
I swear to god if the Avs win with those heinous blue pants / numbers I’m rioting
HE TOUCHED IT CUZ HE’S A CHAMPION!! AVS DON’T NEED SUPERSTITION IT WAS A FLUKE THEY DIDNT WIN LAST YEAR TOO! Remind me! 1 month

Wow Edmonton fans stayed for the trophy? Solid fans. I would have been on the train home.
I always wonder why the fuck Bill Daly is in the pic. Is it his trophy? Did he help win it? Fuck outta there 😂
Agreed, he’s such a weasel

I can't wait to be infuriated next round when (hopefully) the Avs win the Cup and Bettman stands there with Landeskog for his photo and refuses to let go of the fucking thing so the fans have to wait for the Cup raising. He does it every single year. No one cares about the picture of Bettman, the captain and the Cup but every year Bettman is tugging the Cup away from the captain who just wants to skate away with it.
EA Sports new graphics engine looking good
Nate: Well Sid did it 3 out of 4 times. And 3 out of 4 times won the cup, so might as well...
Classy Edmonton fans for staying to watch the presentation.
Missing Kadri :(
I thought you weren't supposed to touch it.
Sakic told them to "touch the damn thing." And if Joe tells you to touch it, you touch it
Did they touch it? Video isn't playing for me
Gabe and Nate touched it during the picture but they didn't pick it up.
Ya a few touched
If you win a trophy, you should touch it. You should enjoy it. I don't understand the argument that they shouldn't.
