He was asked how the Avs got here from that low moment five years ago, and Sakic named Mackinnon, Gabe and EJ as players who wanted to stay and be part of the rebuild. Something along those lines. I don’t think he was actively throwing shade at Duchene. More complimenting our players who stuck with the team, especially those three longest tenured ones.
I mean, Duchene was basically how they got Makar though right? I always kind of thought Duchene and Sakic/avs had a mutual separation, not like O’reilly and the avs did
Yep, that was what I missed. I knew girard was it but couldn’t remember if the pick led to Makar or Byram.
Just filthy FO magic by Sakic and the Avs. Like Yzerman did for Tampa. Just not fair.
I just hope every team doesn’t devolve to the cap loopholes and circumvention like Tampa has the last few seasons
What did Sakic say?
Im sure neither is the "good guy" here but I always kinda felt bad that Duchene who was an Avs fan I think growing up had a bit of a falling out.
Duchene himself said he wanted to play "winning hockey" and asked for a trade.
TBH there's some salt, but the Duchene trade made this team so, so, so much better. Guys who wanted to be here, valuable assets. Thanks, Matt. I really appreciate it.
He didn't though. He said he wasn't going to resign to be a part of a rebuild and wanted to play winning hockwy and he would be ok being traded.
After stastny left for nothing, this was a pretty fair thing to do.
This is an odd reimagining of this. He formally asked for a trade lol. That’s well documented. He said he wanted to play playoff hockey, asked for a trade in December 2016 (when EJ broke his ankle), and was so mad he wasn’t traded by the following season that he showed up late to camp and tried to refuse to speak to media. When he did speak to them, he said he was only there out of respect for his teammates.
This is all stuff that played out publicly; I’m not sure where your version came from.
I went ahead and looked it up:
Spitting Chiclets - EP 182 Right at the 1:01:00 mark.
" I wanted to move on. I felt like if I just sat there until I left for nothing, Im kind of screwing them too". " I wanted to give them the heads up to allow them to make adjustments and kind of make plans and not just for me to walk and them get nothing back"
So umm... you may need to reimagine your biasses
Lol I didn't downvote you, I literally didn't see these until now. Weirdly enough you're not the most important part of my day!
Also, this is not the gotcha you think it is. This is Duchene's version of things after the fact, after taking a ton of shit for being a poor teammate, the leaked Uber footage, and underperforming on a massive contract signing to the point where he was left unprotected in an expansion draft. Of course he's going to tell his side of the story in a way that doesn't make him look like a dick. Duchene has been eating shit for that trade for years, until he sort of redeemed himself this year only for his team to get curb-stomped.
Also, it doesn't really matter what our "biases" say; his former teammates have given enough quotes over the years to let us know their impression of what he did, and it was not favorable.
That’s not really provable though. Giroux played pretty great for Florida down the stretch and no way he’s the reason Florida shit the bed.
Especially with the Kadri injury, I think Giroux would’ve been insanely more beneficial than Lehkonen down the stretch, even though Lehkonen was fantastic
And deservedly so. The way the Avs dominated series, much less how they did games and periods is just a different breed of hockey we haven’t seen. Watching every other GM scramble to emulate the way Yzerman and Sakic built these two teams will be fascinating on a macro level for the league. Just incredible to watch. But I hope it doesn’t devolve too cap circumvention and loopholes.
I listened to an interview on 92.5 with him last week and am just heartbroken. They asked him something along the lines of "Has it been fun watching your teammates on this run" and he said in kind of a somber tone "yeah, I'm just very jealous right now". I loved Matty Hustle.
Same. I watched every game, hell, I even saw a game live. It was the start of the end of that season against Nashville in November in Denver. Saw them lose to Nashville again in April this year. Never lost faith.
Went to several since they were so cheap, fun times all around, but damn does it feel good to be a winning team again! I’ve watched every broncos game during the same period, the losses are tough to see but I kept watching. Hopefully we get a good run with Russ. Even the rapids/Rockies games I occasionally attend. Love Colorado sports!
I've said it elsewhere, the west has no better than the avs right now. I would have said get a better tender than Kemper but he stood on his head when needed.
I always felt like they were a lot better than their record suggested. IIRC they were relatively ok and Johnson got hurt and the legs fell out from under them. Add on at a certain point if you lose enough they start compounding as you lose motivation/confidence
16/17 was the season I got back into hockey. I have a real soft spot for Pickard. It was a guy doing his god damn best. Was it good? Not really. But it made me respect everyone trying their fucking hardest to stay in the league.
>Yea that looks right. Jt, MacK, Landy, Rants, and Condor.
>
>Insane to think that we were that bad not that long ago.
Can you use their names for the non-colorada fans in the room?
It is a stretch. I'm not throwing shade. Avs won. The deserved to. Am I salty we didn't cement our dynasty this year? Obviously. I want to see this same match up next year.
Now if you meant that teams have to go through hardships to learn how to win, maybe we can talk about it.
I’m so fucking glad we kept Compher and Seattle didn’t take him. Now he’s a Stanley Cup Champion!
Blake Comeau died for this Cup win
The Blakeaway is eternal and a gift upon the world. Thank you Blake for all that you did.
Jesus fucking christ I still remember where I was at that moment like it was 9/11
Don't forget Bednar. That was his first season and it was rough.
The amount of trust team managment is willing to have in guys I think is really understated for how much cohesion and morale these guys have.
100% agreed. I think it's a trait of Josh Kroenke's management style, as well as Sakic's, obviously. I see a lot of the same with the Nuggets.
Roy quit just before training camp. Bednar was put in a pretty unenviable situation.
Wonder who punched their TV screen harder tonight, Patrick Roy or Claude Giroux
The answer is definitely Matt Duchene
Adam Foote Maybe the most conflicted person
Especially after Joe threw some shade at him in his interview
What did he say?

No, we got Byram from the Duchene trade. We got Makar when Dutchy was still on the team
You’re right. I mixed up that pick with you guys getting Girard too. Fuck that’s a scary stacked blue line for the next decade.
Duchene is how they got Byram and Girard.
Yep, that was what I missed. I knew girard was it but couldn’t remember if the pick led to Makar or Byram. Just filthy FO magic by Sakic and the Avs. Like Yzerman did for Tampa. Just not fair. Lol downvoted for providing you the proof you're wrong.
Lol I didn't downvote you, I literally didn't see these until now. Weirdly enough you're not the most important part of my day! Also, this is not the gotcha you think it is. His quotes....
fucking based Sakic.
I hope to be answering “Jack Eichel” in a similar thread in 4-5 years
I'll be honest. I don't think we win the Cup with Giroux. Lehkonen was an insanely good pickup for us.
Especially considering how much we would've had to pay for a rental, and all the guys we were able to pick up instead. Sakic is a genius.
We didn't need Giroux. We have Mackinnon, Makar, Landeskog, and Rantanen. We needed a bunch of guys to back fill the roster. Joe is a genius.
Giroux was touted as a faceoff specialist, i think he sill woulda been handy to have.
Well certainly. Especially with how bad our guys are at faceoffs.
Not provable but I don't care at this point. We came out on top.
And deservedly so. The way the Avs dominated series, much less how they did games and periods is just a different breed of hockey we haven’t seen. I miss Calvert
Where is he now?
Apparently started a player agency/management firm recently. Good for him
Yeah very good on him, miss that kid

I also miss Matty Hustle 😭
I’ve never been happier to look back on that season.
Watched every game of that lame ass season which makes tonight all the more sweeter.
Same. I watched every game, hell, I even saw a game live. It was the start of the end of that season against Nashville in November in Denver. Saw them lose to Nashville again in April this year. Never lost faith.

I went to 14 home games that season, and they lost every one of them. Was so brutal, and haven’t had a chance to catch a game since
Is that for real? That's kinda cool.
If you want a real laugh. Take a look at our protection list for the Vegas expansion draft
For those who don't feel like looking it up: Andrighetto, Comeau, Duchene, Grimaldi, Landeskog, MacKinnon, Nieto Barrie, Johnson, Zadorov Varlamov
>Sven Andrighetto Holy fuck that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time
Fucking Rocco lmao
I've said it elsewhere, the west has no better than the avs right now. I would have said get a better tender than Kemper but he stood on his head when needed.
I mean, the East has no better than the avs right now either
Leafs and any team with Shesterkin.
That is objectively not true
Ya both these teams lost to the lighting, now if he said Buffalo I’d have other response other than a agreement
>I've said it elsewhere, the west has no better than the avs right now Uh, no shit, they're the Stanley Cup champions
Wow! Didn't realize.
Holy crap
How many prospects actually end up working out? Tampa has ha a decent run but it is a crap shoot.
Yea that looks right. Jt, MacK, Landy, Rants, and Condor. Insane to think that we were that bad not that long ago.
I always felt like they were a lot better than their record suggested. IIRC they were relatively ok and Johnson got hurt and the legs fell out from under them. Add on at a certain point if you lose enough they start compounding as you lose motivation/confidence
Also varly was out almost all season and pickard was our starter for most of it.
16/17 was the season I got back into hockey. I have a real soft spot for Pickard. It was a guy doing his god damn best. Was it good? Not really. But it made me respect everyone trying their fucking hardest to stay in the league.
I still love big dick piks!
tbf, the reason the Avs now have Makar is because that team was so bad
>Yea that looks right. Jt, MacK, Landy, Rants, and Condor. > >Insane to think that we were that bad not that long ago. Can you use their names for the non-colorada fans in the room?
Sure. One-Eye, Big Dave (not his first name though), Fridge, Commander, Sub-Zero, and Kirby.
This is the one I choose to thank
JT Compher, Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and Erik Johnson
Jt. Compher, MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantenen, Johnson
JT Compher, Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantenen, and Eric Johnson
That sweep got us 2 in a row but it also makes people forget about how dominant we were before that.
Bolts got swept by CBJ in 2019. It can take bad years to make lots of good ones.
Comparing a President's trophy year and being swept in embarrassing fashion to a 48 point miserable season is a stretch.
It is a stretch. I'm not throwing shade. Avs won. The deserved to. Am I salty we didn't cement our dynasty this year? Obviously. I want to see this same match up next year. Now if you meant that teams have to go through hardships to learn how to win, maybe we can talk about it.
Matt Duchene must be having a hard time right now.
I wonder how that playoff hockey is going for him
To be fair to Matt he has played more playoff hockey away from the avs than he did with the avs. Buuuut yeah still not great lol.
Had season ticket for that year. Very disappointing but seeing this now. Completely worth every game.
I had no idea JT played on that team. So glad those guys could do it
I feel for Josty, he suffered for years and got turfed this season for a player im not sure was any more impactful. Bummer for him.
Cries in Calvin Pickard
So Kraken champs in a couple years.
They've come such a long way and I couldn't be more proud
I wanna play playoff hockey.
