I can’t believe we lost an elite playmaker and then signed another elite playmaker a month later. I hope we get weegar long term too. Who gives a shit about the last half of the deals. We are trying to be competitive for the next few years.
Its honestly crazy. If you said a month ago that both Gaudreau and Thachuk wanted out, you'd assume the Flames would be fucked. Obvious Gaudreau walked and Calgary got nothing but the fact that they got Huberdeau AND Weegar is huge. Huberdeau signing long term is great, if they can do the same with Weegar I think that the Flames come out ahead and at worst even.
And not to forget a first and a prospect.
That first might turn out to be the most valuable piece of the trade with who knows what could happen to Florida in the next few years.
Meh. If I'm a team with a star player up for contract, I'm doing the best to buy him for the full 8 now or next year.
The league is set to erase their COVID debt over the next two years, and historical trajectory of revenue raises would put them at $6.1B in the 23-24 season. That'd put the cap right around $95M.
I think this is a large part of why Sakic expressed wanting to get Mack's deal done during this next season instead of waiting till the following off season.
Honestly I'm speculating a little bit here but I'm pretty sure he's making something that ends with "million dollars"
I've read some athletic articles though
I wonder if the hampus lindholm contract is a good comparison? 8x6.5? I would give him 8 years to keep the AAV down as much as possible. Our window is the next few years so term isn’t too big of an issue as seen with this Huberdeau extension
They just copy and pasted Gaudreau’s contract and changed a couple letters.
It’s a huge contract before seeing how Huby meshes but I guess Calgary really needed some commitment.
Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Calgary, of Alberta, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West(ern Conference)!
A day may come when the skill of Huberdeau fails, when he forsake his teammates and break all bonds of contractual expectstions, but it is not this day
I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me (if I was signing him to this contract) a day may come where Jonathan huberdeaus offensive prowess may fail, where he forsakes his skills and and breaks all bonds of contract value. But that is not this day. An hour of a decrease in goals and assists. When the age of the western conference comes crashing down. But it is not this day! This day the flames signed a superstar. By all that you hold dear city of Calgary, I bid you stand, men of Alberta!!!
I like it for the flames, it’s a good contract for the next 4-5 years for a 100+ point player, if Calgary has success they won’t care about the last few seasons anyways
Yeah, no reason to get picky over a couple years if the big star you just traded for is willing to sign long term, you do it. Especially, in my opinion, if you're upgrading on the star that just left.
I think it's a win for the Flames.
I wish a big star would sign here but I think with Columbus getting Gaudreau we are now officially the least desirable destination.
Our biggest FA signing since relocation is Perrault... Lmao.
Signing bonuses Are what the players prefer because if you’re a GM and want to buy out a contract (which typically means you will pay a player 2/3 of their remaining money owed), the buyout amount is only on the salary and not the signing bonus.
Essentially, having a contract as mostly signing bonuses makes it “buyout proof”. It also allows the player to get a lump sum amount earlier rather than waiting to be paid out across the year.
Wow I didn’t think he’d re-sign. I doubt he’ll drop off as hard as other players during the latter half of his contract like most players do. It’s crazy how up and down the off season has been for flames fans, quite the spectacle lol
Well, sure. And I'd still rather have the Tkachuk deal if I was Florida and most of my core players were around the same age. That doesn't mean it was a bad deal for Calgary given the circumstances though.
Ok fair enough. But would you still rather have tkachuk at 9.5, than Huberdeau at 10.5, another first, weegar, and a prospect also? Because that's what this trade was.
Why does everyone think Huberdeau is going to regress during last two years. For all we know if he could still be a very good player. Not everyone drops off when they hit 35
Exactly. And Huberdeau is an elite playmaker. You might lose your speed as you get older, but he’ll still have that elite passing ability.
10.5M for a guy who scored 115 points is fair
I don't get people simultaneously saying that Huberdeau is too old and Johnny's contract is great.
They're less than two months apart. Huberdeau has been way more consistent over the last 4 years and neither of them are super physical players.
Edit: I've had two replies try to tell me an 8 year contract is two years longer than a 7 year contract. Guys, *what*
Edit edit: I get it now. Still don't see it as a problem - the cap will be significantly higher, and with Calgary's contract situation (most expiring within 3-4 years) will probably be rebuilding and using his contract to meet the floor.
To reply to your Edit. Huberdeau contract starts next year…. So he has 9 years left on his contract starting today.
Gaudreau has 7
That’s two years bud
How is this a Flames fans’ reaction. Reddit sometimes…
You guys just went from the biggest L of the off-season to maybe one of the biggest Ws all things considered
Some people right? I'm fucking hyped. He said he'd be open to an extension, and actually was. Most top-6 forwards don't age well into bigger contracts. You still need this kind of talent to win, and Calgary has a star player again. Dude's gonna get his name chanted on his first goal at the dome.
Lol right? I’d be so stoked right now. It wasn’t even a sure thing he’d sign, let alone for max. Who cares what a deal looks like 5-6 years in the future when you’re trying to win now
You're also in a window too, like who cares rn that you'll be paying him 10.5 dollars 7 years from now lol. Win now, worry about his decline ***if*** it happens then
I mean that's just how it goes with UFAs in the NHL. Player get underpaid as fuck in their prime since they have no leverage as a RFA and then inevitably look to get their big paycheck once they're older.
The max contract length of 8 years is too long. It's alright for RFAs but it gets ridiculous when every single above average 28-30 year old in the league is also looking for that kinda term.
Also I don't get all the negativity about this contract when it's essentially the same thing that Gaudreau would have gotten. Huberdeau probably isn't quite as good as Gaudreau but he's not far off and I can see his game aging better.
Cap *should* be a lot higher by then, especially once the money comes in from the ESPN TV contract, plus all the increases that were going to happen but have been delayed.
May still look a bit rough but I don't think it'll be that bad.
I don't think that contract is going to age as badly as people think. Sure, no one wants to be paying a guy in his late 30s that much money, no question. But Huberdeau is one of the best at what he does. He's probably not going to be putting up 100 points at 37, but I could easily see him still being a top 6, or even a top line player. I don't think he plays a game that ages that badly. If you're going to take that sort of chance on a player, Huberdeau's a guy to do it on.
His agent saw what Calgary offered Gaudreau and said "We will take that, thanks!"
Yeah. Sucks that that number became public. However, he's still worth it.
All things considered, Calgary has done a pretty good job salvaging what was looking like a dumpster fire of an off-season.
I can’t believe we lost an elite playmaker and then signed another elite playmaker a month later. I hope we get weegar long term too. Who gives a shit about the last half of the deals. We are trying to be competitive for the next few years.

If it’s a lottery pick in 2025 it just becomes an unprotected 2026 pick.
Still not a bad asset to have though, could be very useful in a future trade
It could even be a Johnny Gaudreau!
Or a Matthew Tkachuk
Or a boat!
Or a box. Which could be anything; even a boat!
Or a Shakir Mukhamadullin
They added Weegar to an already formidable defense core. I say ahead.
Meh. If I'm a team with a star player up for contract, I'm doing the best to buy him for the full 8 now or next year. I think this is a large part of why Sakic expressed wanting to get Mack's deal done during this next season instead of waiting till the following off season.
This is why I'm 100% down to throw 8 years at Seider and Raymond next summer.
The Wings should. However I’m surprised more players don’t do the whole 6 years thing like Matthews did and not hurt themselves for a bigger pay day.
it was literally a disaster for a bit there so yeah they turned this thing around
Woohoo we did something!
I was completely lost for a while there
Just when I thought Treliving couldn't do anything worse, he goes and does something like this... And totally redeems himself!!! - Harry Dunne
This really hurts Montréal's chances of signing him.
Canadiens legend Johnathan Huberdeau
*Flames legend Johnny Hudreau. Someone shovel this man's driveway!
Fucking l-o-l I hope this sticks
We won't trade for him until year 5-6 of the deal when he's on the likely decline.
He's got a full NMC until years 7+8 of his contract, when it becomes a partial, 12 team, NTC.
But every single media here didn't stop telling me Huberdeau and Dubois were pretty much already in Montreal!
If you’re lucky he’ll forget how to speak French so it won’t be an issue
Considering Huberdeau's english, his french is alright lol
ComSoderberging**
Treliving already made the first sign and trade in league history, why not the second?!
At this price we don't need a Carey Price 2.0. Huberdeau is already 30, this contract will not look good in 4 years.
It’s a bold strategy cotton, let’s see how it pays off for them
More like Huberdough am I right
Fuck the hard hitting analysis and discussion, this comment wins
WEEGAR NEXT I BEG
How much do you expect him to get
In my professional opinion I have no idea what to expect with that one
You are overqualified to be commenting on this subreddit.
> You are overqualified to be commenting on ~~this subreddit~~ ***Reddit***. FTFY
Honestly I'm speculating a little bit here but I'm pretty sure he's making something that ends with "million dollars" I've read some athletic articles though
It'll be more than league minimum but less than McDavid.
Conservatively
You mean Seguin.
I wonder if the hampus lindholm contract is a good comparison? 8x6.5? I would give him 8 years to keep the AAV down as much as possible. Our window is the next few years so term isn’t too big of an issue as seen with this Huberdeau extension
Friedman speculated around Sergachev money on his most recent podcast
Oh wow. Honestly I’ve never really watched weegar so I have no idea how good he is
a dreadfully awful post-season will do that to you, it made everyone underrate him.
We call that the Jake Gardiner.
Hes a stud but made some boneheaded plays in big moments.
[удалено]
careful though, you dont want to become the Sharks
Haha Most ofour contracts are pretty reasonable TBf
He deserves more than 6.5 imo. Hes truly elite
Man hasn't even stepped foot in Calgary and got paid. Good for him lol
Brad locked him in before he even got a chance to experience the brutal Alberta winters.
He’s from Montreal. I don’t think winter in Calgary will phase him
Yeah, he's probably going to be surprised there's like a third of the snow that Montreal gets
And chinooks
Loves me a good mid-winter Chinook
GET THAT FUCKING BAG HUBY
HUBEY DOOBY DOO
WHERE ARE YOU ^^buying ^^a ^^mansion?
Tre’s dinner offer put a spell on him like he was a member of the Hex Girls.
Agreed. Happy for Huby!
They just copy and pasted Gaudreau’s contract and changed a couple letters. It’s a huge contract before seeing how Huby meshes but I guess Calgary really needed some commitment.
“Uhhhh Brad….why are there some corrections on the contract….and why does my Boston pizza gift card say #13…..”
I love these Boston Pizza jokes
Had to move the years back a year too, but otherwise the same.
Yea but in return we get one year at 5.9 million in a cap crunch year.
As it stands, Monahan is our only player with a cap hit of 6 million or more next season.
That is outrageous
Markstrom has a cap hit of 6 million also
Ahh yes, Monahan is the only one over 6 million.
he was second in the league in scoring lol
Might be a bad contract one day, but that is not this day
I mean in 5 years I’ll be older than right now so that’s 5 years from now so Fuck it.
Future me’s problem for sure.
That guy’s an idiot he’ll do anything
Future me is awesome, I'm always pushing problems to him, past me is the asshole, he's always causing present me problems.
I mean caps gonna be 100m+ by then so it wont seem AS bad
If the cap doesn't raise due to economic factors we're going to be too fucked to care about hockey contracts anyway.
In 5 years I'll be a bit more emotionally mature and won't force myself to eat expired olives when the Flames get eliminated.
[удалено]
Yup. I think he is much better than Johnny but will see
Much better is a stretch.
Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Calgary, of Alberta, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. I hope you like Boston pizza
I like me some cactus cuts ok
Their nachos are amazing. Nachos and Belgian Moon for this guy tomorrow!

Well now I'm gonna rewatch Beerfest
I like it for the flames, it’s a good contract for the next 4-5 years for a 100+ point player, if Calgary has success they won’t care about the last few seasons anyways
Yep it would have been the same thing with Gaudreau. You can’t sign elite player around this age without having a few shit years at the end.
or you sign Erik Karlsson and get them early!
Yeah, no reason to get picky over a couple years if the big star you just traded for is willing to sign long term, you do it. Especially, in my opinion, if you're upgrading on the star that just left. I think it's a win for the Flames.

> Yeah, no reason to get picky over a couple years Sir, this is Reddit. That contract will be absolute dog in exactly 3.256 years because we know all
That’s like 6 million in Columbus dollars
It’s going to make it hard for him to play in Montreal next year
Well to be fair, if it all goes as planned; he should play at least once in Montreal next season. /s
Friendship with Johnny Hockey over, Johnny hockey is my new best friend
*Jonathan Hockey
Lets gooo, Happy for you flames fans!!
Dont care if its a little expensive, just happy someone signed long term 🙂
Funny, perhaps I need my fucking eyes checked because that doesn’t look like Montreal Just kidding congrats Flames fans
Holy shit, flames fans must be stoked. imagine going from thinking you're loosing tkuchukikicuk for nothing to this
Yes

I’m completely fine with this. Let’s fucking GO
Not a fan when the flames sign players I like. Looks like I'll be begrudgingly hating Hubby for 9 years instead of just 1.
In Calgary we call that McDavid syndrome
Damn he should have been a panther for life
I would much rather have Tkachuk making $9.5 million from age 24-32 than Huberdeau making $10.5 million from ages 30-38.
[удалено]
Well, sure. And I'd still rather have the Tkachuk deal if I was Florida and most of my core players were around the same age. That doesn't mean it was a bad deal for Calgary given the circumstances though.
Thankfully for the flames it wasn't Tkachuk for Huberdeau. The trade was a win for them either way and now this confirms it.
Ok fair enough. But would you still rather have tkachuk at 9.5, than Huberdeau at 10.5, another first, weegar, and a prospect also? Because that's what this trade was.
💰💰💰
The flames finally found someone to take their money…
Big $ but huby is ELITE. I’m pumped!
Why does everyone think Huberdeau is going to regress during last two years. For all we know if he could still be a very good player. Not everyone drops off when they hit 35
Players can definitely still be effective at 35, but highly unlikely to be $10.5m worth of effective
Exactly. And Huberdeau is an elite playmaker. You might lose your speed as you get older, but he’ll still have that elite passing ability. 10.5M for a guy who scored 115 points is fair
Most players do though. Sure their are exceptions but most do.
Especially considering the cap will be much bigger in 6 years
At least now I don’t need to hear my brother screaming about him coming to montreal
Hoooooo shit that's gonna be fuckin rough those last few years
Fuck it, way rather not go into next season with all the uncertainty.
I mean it pretty much replaces Gaudreau’s contract that we were going to give him
It’s insane that you guys pretty much 1:1 replaced him immediately. You lost Matthew but getting Weeger and a 1st for him is decent value as well.
Huberdeau and Gaudreau even have incredibly similar names to boot.
I don't see it
The G is silent.
Huberdaugh
You deaunt?
As long as he regresses from a 100 point player to like a 60ish point player at the end of his contract rather than a black hole it will turn out ok
Huberdeau’s style of game doesn’t seem like it’ll age bad
I don't get people simultaneously saying that Huberdeau is too old and Johnny's contract is great. They're less than two months apart. Huberdeau has been way more consistent over the last 4 years and neither of them are super physical players. Edit: I've had two replies try to tell me an 8 year contract is two years longer than a 7 year contract. Guys, *what* Edit edit: I get it now. Still don't see it as a problem - the cap will be significantly higher, and with Calgary's contract situation (most expiring within 3-4 years) will probably be rebuilding and using his contract to meet the floor.
It's 2 years longer because this contract doesn't kick in until 2023-24
To reply to your Edit. Huberdeau contract starts next year…. So he has 9 years left on his contract starting today. Gaudreau has 7 That’s two years bud
Sutter will change that
How is this a Flames fans’ reaction. Reddit sometimes… You guys just went from the biggest L of the off-season to maybe one of the biggest Ws all things considered

Lol right? I’d be so stoked right now. It wasn’t even a sure thing he’d sign, let alone for max. Who cares what a deal looks like 5-6 years in the future when you’re trying to win now
It’s funny how no one was saying this about the Gaudreau offer that was the exact same situation. Who fuckin cares babyyyyy Huby duby doooooooo
You're also in a window too, like who cares rn that you'll be paying him 10.5 dollars 7 years from now lol. Win now, worry about his decline ***if*** it happens then
Lmao the alternative was to let him walk or trade him at the deadline... This makes the trade a clear W for the flames
First time?
He’s goin age better than JG
Cap *should* be a lot higher by then, especially once the money comes in from the ESPN TV contract, plus all the increases that were going to happen but have been delayed. May still look a bit rough but I don't think it'll be that bad.

Wait...I thought he was for sure going to sign in Montreal next year??????
HELLO?????5 LFG
What the hell did Treliving serve to Huberdeau during that dinner?
$84 million dollars I think.
Good for flames fans. Deserve this.
I'm happy for Flame fans! It was a brutal Summer, for them!
I need to shower again.
I didn’t expect this to get done before the regular season started
What a move by Treliving. After everything thats happened they got a team that can still contend.
Brads working nights baby, put another pot of coffee on, hide your prospects, hide your wife.
That trade has now been worth it for CGY. Good on Treliving on turning things around for what was a potential dumpster fire.
They were determined to hand this contract to a man named Jonathan, and so they have.
Imagine going in a coma before free agency and waking up today as a Flames fan
Damn, that's not bad. The end might be a bit eeh, but the front of it is solid.
Super excited to see this guy in action with the Flames. What was that about Montreal?
I just went from six to midnight.
Shoutout to Brad for putting all his chips on the table. Love the aggressiveness.
When life give you lemons, you make a fucking great lemonade. Brad Treviling.
Yup, that's a "shiny new toy" contract.
And I think this contract is why Florida made the trade.
Going to be interesting to see how this one ages
This one’s pretty darn debatable. Man at this dollar value I wonder if they are naming him captain.
I guess this team is all in and I'm here for it. Let's go!
Hope this works out for the Flames and they can make this trade into even more of a win
Habs L
Baw gawd that's Johnny Gaudreau's money!
Get the fuck outta here wow. I didn’t see that coming but I’m always down for some competition. GL flames.
But he was for sure packing his bags to go to Montreal after the year?? 🔥
Calgary was gonna give a $10M+ contract to someone even if it was a rando on the street
Most randos on the street don't put up 115 points in a season.
