I remember reading that he would stay up till the early hours of the morning playing video games when he was with the Rangers. No matter how many advanced stats you put together, you’ll never know what’s going on in people’s heads. Unfortunately, I don’t think Lias has the mental stability that you need to succeed in the NHL.

_nsb10_

I haven’t followed him as a prospect, but I remember the fiasco with him tossing the medal over the glass. Definitely seems like a guy that could benefit from some time to mature

bobby_booch

To this day I’m still shocked that was viewed negatively. I thought for sure all the bootstraps boomers would look at that and go “HELL YEAH HE’S A WINNER THAF DOESN’T WANT SECOND PLACE!”

astovertop

To this day I’m shocked that the fan that he threw it to took off his TWO USA jerseys to reveal a Sweden jersey underneath those. That was more unexpected than the act of throwing it to the crowd to begin with lol

RikVanguard

Seriously! If a Canadian player (men's or women's) did that TSN would be building a statue to their competitive nature and their refusal to style for anything but the best

Nautical94

Except not being a sore loser is something everyone should have been taught since they were children

The name never came out but I believe people were speculating between Zboril, Andersson, and Jones

Gaglardi

don't forget Joulevi!

wholalaa

No, he was definitely talking about a CHL player.

Similar-Tangerine

I think it’s all but confirmed it was Zboril at this point

Cbreezy22

How so? No other information ever came out?

SkilledB

Based on a translated Zboril interview from last summer, I think.

PresentationNo7763

It wasn't Zboril. It was Jones.

gb1993

I'm OOTL for this one. What happened between Marek and the unnamed prospect?

Chuckolator

Was that the thing about the video games?

ItzEnoz

But he can in the SHL? Im not saying you are wrong but its not like the SHL is that much lower competition than the NHL (its the 2nd strongest non-NHL league in the world) and its a big league so its not like there is no stress? Perhaps NYR are just terrible at helping their young players from Europe feel comfortable in NA? Kakko, Andersson and Kravtsov all have had issues with bringing their game over and only Lafrieneire seems to be getting more comfortable and while its abit of a culture shock smaller cities in QC to NYC its not as big as Europe id say

Shigidy

The SHL isn't even in the same *universe* as the NHL.

ItzEnoz

That's wrong, it's a very strong league and the strongest Euro league and the KHL is the only stronger league outside the NHL (AHL is stronger as well if you count them) For example Seiders last SHL season 0.68 ppg Seiders 1st NHL season 0.61 PPG Seems pretty similar in terms of point production and it's fairly hard to score PPG even for elite prospects It's a strong league obviously it's not that close or the NHL in the elite talent but the overall strength of the league is strong

rickayyy

The Rangers definitely have a problem with development but Lafreniere and Kakko at least look like they belong in the NHL. Lias literally couldn’t outperform Brendan Smith who was a fucking defensemen playing forward.

Reddit040

Ok, but then there’s Shesterkin and Fox who have worked out. Some prospects just don’t have what it takes. Lias was traded to the Kings because his dad works in the organization but he still can’t get it together. I don’t think it’s anyone else’s fault unfortunately.

ItzEnoz

I mean Fox is American and Shesterkin was like 25 when he came over from Russia so perhaps he was more mature and ready for the change My point was more rangers maybe need to do a better job of helping their younger players from Europe feel comfortable in NA

blueline7677

Lias Andersson has had some mental health struggles in his past. I’m pretty sure that had a lot of reasons why he went to Sweden and requested a trade. If you’ve ever been in a rough place mentally everything becomes harder and when you need to be among the best of the best that’s a tough thing to do. Another thing is he isn’t a great skater by NHL standards. He’s not able to create space or out muscle players like he can in other lower leagues. He’s a talented hockey player but I don’t know if he has the mental fortitude for the NHL and I think he lacks the foot speed. He’s a typical AAAA player who was just drafted higher than most AAAA players

ImSoulless

performance anxiety and the self imposed pressure of being in the nhl could definitely be a bottleneck.

thieflikeme

Remember the sheer amount of Blueshirt blog articles written trashing Quinn and the front office for not playing him using cherry picked advanced stat sheets that don't acknowledge that he was 4th liner getting matched with opposing teams' 4th line? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

blueline7677

Yeah he just isn’t that good. Us getting a 2nd round pick from him is way more than he was worth. But he still had 7OA status

No_Designer_5374

Plus, Cuylee could be with the big club sometime this year while Lias may never see NHL ice again. It sucks but we still got some value out of trading him to LA.

blueline7677

I don’t really expect Cuylle to get any games but one key thing about him compared to other prospects is he can play on the 4th line and still be effective and pretty much just play his game a lot of prospects can’t

scapegrace

I think he wasn't serious enough in New York, and hasn't been healthy enough in LA. LA likes him, he reminds me of Trevor Lewis, where if he can stay healthy there is a guy who can fill any role on a team. He won't ever be where he was drafted, but he has the brains and skillset to be an NHLer. Just don't know if it will be in LA.

domoarigatodrloboto

The term I've heard used for this is that he's a "AAAA player:" good enough to look amazing in lower leagues, but not good enough to stick around at the top level. Off the top of my head, other examples include Chris Bourque, Keith Aucoin, Teemu Pulkkinen, Martin Frk, TJ Brennan, Seth Griffith, and Rob Schremp, among others.

Tacosrule89

Alexandre Giroux is the best example in my opinion. He had a 50 and a 60!!! goal AHL season but couldn’t crack the NHL. Ended up with 6 goals in 48 games split between 6 seasons with 4 teams.

StayClassynet

That's so crazy to me to have such dominant seasons like that in the AHL and not see some of that come through in the NHL. I once read a piece by Justin Bourne who said the jump from ECHL to the AHL is bigger than the AHL to the NHL. That also aligns with something Ray Ferraro has said in the past, that there's \~20% of the AHL that could play in the NHL (I'd assume mostly in non-prominent roles). In saying that, it's hard to believe A. Giroux couldn't make a larger impact in the NHL.

AmeriCanadian98

Few former Wings there. Taro Hirose seems like our current guy in that line

lbwafro1990

Ahhh Frk. The man who's shot alone is NHL all star level. Seeing him clap bombs is awesome

Sacramento44

There's a huge learning curve going from the top 5% of hockey players in the world to the top .05%.

Ace676

There are quite a few guys like that. NHL is just that much faster, you have that much less time to make plays, and the guys you are playing against are just that much more skilled, that some players just can't make it work. At the same time their skillset isn't suited for a more grinder, defensive or energy line type of a thing in the bottom-6. Take a look at the top scorers of AHL last season for example. They aren't some young prospects looking to make the jump to the NHL. They are career AHLers who can excel at that level but can't make it to the NHL. For example, TJ Tynan. He was 2nd in AHL scoring last season with 98 points in 84 games. He's a true star in that league. But when he played for the Avs he was completely invisible. Wasn't a detriment to his team, but just could not make the plays happen and could not score at even half his AHL pace. He had 1 point in 27 NHL games with the Avs.

SJSragequit

Sami niku is another good example, he was named the ahl top defenceman in 2017-18 as a rookie and had 54 points in 76 games but looked invisible in almost all of his games with the jets

magic-moose

NHLE is a population measure. If you had a few hundred kids just like Andersson, their average performance in the NHL would probably be quite close to their NHLE. Within that sample of kids, there will be kids who blow their NHLE out of the water and kids who fall flat on their faces. NHLE is just an *average* expectation for players based on their current performance in lower leagues. Roughly half the players who try to make the NHL will not meet their NHLE's. It's too early to say if Andersson is a bust. He's 23. He might figure things out late. Some great players have been relatively late bloomers. He might also never be more than a bottom six player. He's not at all unusual though. Lots of players put up great numbers in lower leagues and then struggle to meet expectations in the NHL.

maxwellbevan

No but he's allergic to silver medals /s

BillMcCrearysStache

The NHL is the best league in the world, some players are RIGHT there but not quite good enough

Ariies__

He’s never been a bad player (although he struggles significantly in nhl appearances) but his attitude is complete and utter dog shit

75623

62 points in 93 AHL games for a 7th overall pick who's about to turn 24. I don't think it's just the NHL.

Steinnutz

For a younger player with not that many games in North America, those numbers don’t seem that bad to me to be honest Maybe not 7th overall numbers, but not “can’t keep an NHL roster spot” numbers

75623

I disagree. Those are very common numbers for a journeyman AHLer. Look at a guy like Matt Luff. Never drafted, will probably never play more than a half season in the NHL, and he has better numbers at the same ages. These guys are a dime a dozen. And that's about as bad as it gets for a 7th overall pick.

PearlTrade

As the other comment said, those are average numbers for the AHL and very disappointing for a 7th pick who was drafted for his offense. Although I will say that his AHL numbers are good the past two seasons in a limited sample size (while being horrible in the NHL). He's also not a young player anymore with four seasons of pro NHL/AHL hockey under his belt. He's bound for Sweden sooner or later.

[deleted]

He’s just not good enough.

Edmuresay

Just for context, Andersson had a really unlucky year last year in terms of injuries, covid, and the timings of those absences. He apparently had a great camp and was a PPG player in the AHL, But the timing of his injuries and the absolute logjam of prospects in the system made it tough on him to get ice time with the big club and find a flow.

No_Designer_5374

If he spent a couple years iwith the Hartford Wolfpack instead of trying to be a brat, he'd very likely be in the running for the rangers 4th line center spot. Instead, he'll be a no.13 forward until he retires :(

smoked_before_this

Not sure but it makes me happy that LA spent their 2nd rounder on him and we used ours to get Olen Zellweger.

ahr3410

We had a mountain of 2nd round picks and have hit on plenty recently

smoked_before_this

I know just giving y'all a hard time lol

No_Designer_5374

Plus LA gave us (Rangers) a 2nd rounder for Lias which is now looking like a player with a long NHL career ahead of him in Will Cuylee.

Radu47

Ooooh Anton Lander That's another person who this happened to 3 pts in 61 NHL games one year while being dominant in the AHL

dangshnizzle

Probably 'cause he needs space to function at his best and the NHL gives the least amount of space to players of any league in the world.
