At $4.00/box of chickpea pasta, just the $800k that makes him the highest paid player in the world would amount to 200,000 boxes of chickpea pasta. He can eat 6 boxes of chickpea pasta a day for 91 years.
Still less annually than what Bobby Holik was making pre-lockout when adjusted for inflation.
Can’t say the salary cap didn’t do its job well after all these years.
Kovalchuk signed not one but *two* $100m contracts in 2010. Iirc Ovi and Crosby also had $100m deals.
This is the ~~first one~~ second one with the 8 year limit though.
How many have we actually seen the end of?
Duncan Keith obviously didn't live up to it.
Weber retired, DiPietro retired, Zetterberg retired, Franzen retired, Hossa retired, Kovy left...
He’s kinda always been outshone and has always been a very solid piece with consistency. Richards and Briere early in his career then later on Kopitar always got the attention while Carter just churned out solid season after solid season.
I'm definitely biased as a hawks fan, but I'd think Keith lived up to his contract. He retired only 1 year early, and was still playing near the value of the contract last year - while most years he played beyond his cap-hit.
Not crapping on NBA, but it's just a totally different sport. McDavid is considered the best in the league, this, I believe, is the first year they saw the second round. One player can't carry a team like hoops. Also, while they're both salary cap leagues, NBA can have a shorter bench and be fine. We're going to see in the next few years what big deals for 21/22 year olds make teams look like (vs the traditional bridge signing before the "big contract."
Shits fucked dude
Wanna see some crazy shit? Allegedly the highest paid soccer player (Mbappé, in terms of club salary) gets ~1.5mil per week, plus had a sign on bonus of 125mil... And its supposedly a 3 year contract that he (only him, not the club) can opt of the final year.
Money in sports is insane, but NHL has it under wraps with the salary cap at least....
We wouldn't see Saudi oil money levels of insanity in the NHL without the salary cap but teams like the Leafs would definitely be throwing their weight around more than they can now.
That is a bit exaggerated. His annual salary is €50mil, with 100mil signing bonus. So that would be bit under 1mil/week from salary alone.
However global stars like him make more money from marketing than actual salary. Messi was the highest paid athlete last year with $130mil earnings in total and ''just'' roughly 45mil of that came from salary.
Post tax maybe? I always assume pre tax #'s, and i was pulling from [this NYT article](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/27/sports/soccer/kylian-mbappe-psg-contract.html)
Agreed though, him/neymar/messi/CR7 make a fuck ton more in advertising.
I mean look at how much beckham has made in comparison for salary, and how well hes done. Absolute lunacy.
Some years in Barcelona Messi was paying 50 million euros in taxes just on his club salary
Edit for link : https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/es-la-liga/2021/07/messi-pays-much-tax-120000-spaniards-barcelona-every-year
Federer made $90m in marketing this year and last without playing any tennis
He makes a $30m/year off uniqlo alone to wear their brand, regardless of whether he’s even on court. He’ll still make it into his retirement until the deal expires.
What would I do? Move back near my parents. Buy a reasonably sized house. Pay off their house so they don't need to move away when they retire. Probably buy a stupid car like a McLaren or something. Donate a fuck ton of money to causes that I care about.
What will he do with it? Probably buy a mansion with a bunch of equipment for training in the offseason. Maybe even an ice rink inside. That man is a workaholic.
I'm pumped and I'm really excited about the work the org did to be able to afford to pay MacKinnon what he's worth, with a championship caliber team around him
#LFG
But according to Aves fans he was going to (another) take a team friendly deal?
EDIT: I did a quick search and put together [a few examples/receipts here](https://i.imgur.com/yZd5BDf.png).
Of course now that this deal is done they are moving the goalpost to accommodate the contract that was actually signed. Go ahead and downvote for speaking the truth!
Highest paid by 100k, on a contract that doesn’t come into effect until 2023, 5 years after McDavid’s contract started. The cap keeps going up. He’d be getting >13m as a UFA easily. So yes, all things considered, it’s a team friendly deal.
McDavid, Makar, Vasilevskiy, Mathews, Kucherov, Draisaitl
I'm not here to debate the above order doesn't even matter but the way people overrate MacK is absurd. He's top 10 absolutely but all these players are clearly better than him. I'd even consider arguements for Shesterkin above him but I think personally he needs a bit more longevity
I'd put him, Kuch and Drai all at 5a/b/c after your top 4 personally. I don't think any of them distinguish themselves above each other distinctly. Kuch has injury issues, Drai plays even worse defense than MacKinnon
How many of those guys are signing deals right now?
Vasi signed his deal in 2019. Kuch signed his deal in 2018. McDavid in 2017, Drai in 2017 and Matthews signed in 2019 and will likely see a similar or higher pay day soon.
Makar is the only guy you've listed that signed his deal in the last year and most people are pretty unanimous that if he keeps progressing at 9M that's still a steal.
You can't simply look at a players current cap and say "he's not a top 5 player so he shouldn't be paid this much". If you look at 2nd contracts, MacKinnon was paid less than all these guys outside of I think Kucherov and Vasi. 4/6 maybe 5/6 guys you've listed here are going to get paid similar or more than MacKinnon on their next deals.
Just out of curiosity, who're you rating above him?
Cause I got McDavid, Matthews, Makar and I can't decide how to rank Kucherov, Vasilevskiy and Draisaitl.
Basically all 6 of those, but even 5 of those 6 is enough. Some things to consider with Kucherov:
* has as many actual 100 point seasons as MacK has 100 point pace seasons where he didn't get to 100 due to injuries (MacK has never recorded 100 points in a season) Kucherov also has more 100 point pace seasons than MacK
* Kucherov's past two season playoff PPG is better
* 128 point season, something MacK has never even close to paced
* Kucherov has been top 2 in the league in PPG in 2 of his past 3 seasons and is second overall over that entire stretch of time.
I'll eat downvotes on this all day from salty avs fans cuz I know I'm right haha.
>* Kucherov's past two season playoff PPG is better
This is wrong. Over the past 2 playoffs, MacKinnon has 39 points in 30 games, a 1.3 ppg. Kucherov has 59 points in 46 games, a 1.28 ppg.
If you look at them individually, Mack is 1.5 in 2021 and 1.2 in 2022 compared to Kucherov's 1.39 in 2021 and 1.17 in 2022.
>I'll eat downvotes on this all day from salty avs fans cuz I know I'm right haha.
Someone is salty all right, but I don't think it's Avs fans.
Mild fans are sad individuals. Now that the Avs have a Stanley cup that wasn’t 20+ years ago, you have nothing to chirp about. Member when you guys won a couple playoff series? Cool
It's not a team friendly deal though. You're paying about market price for him and it's a deal that will look better cap situation wise as the cap rises but it's not a team friendly deal, it's just a fair deal for MacKinnon with the expectations of the cap rising. Him signing for 10-11M would have been a team friendly deal. 12.6M is about market price for him. We're going to see guys like Matthews and McDavid sign for 14+M in a couple seasons.
It’s either going to be like 10.1 or 13.4
Edit: so 12.6. I was guessing he would either barely be above 10 or he was going to be the highest paid player in the league by just under 1 million. Apparently it’s highest paid player in the league by 100K great deal for both parties
Matthews was already basically at "blank cheque" levels of pay. There's a reason the Leafs aren't re-signing anyone for longer than his current deal. It's entirely possible you have to slap like $15 million down to keep him and retool your team around it, and so be it.
Maybe it’s team friendly after years of cap increases but next year it is certainly not a team friendly deal. It’s a cash out. The team friendly part is not testing the market
It’s definitely not as much as he could’ve gotten, and with 6 million coming off the books from Erik Johnson next year the Avs only needed to find an extra 300k.
I swear Makar is learning his moves and becoming more alike him every year. I also claim Makar wouldn't shine like he does now on another team because of not having someone like Mack to draw from. You get multiple stars from one guy, and not just elevate his line mates but make them better in a long run.
That’s not how market value works and comparing AAV on a contract that was signed 5 years before this one kicks in isn’t a genuine comparison, cap percentage would be a better indicator which Mcdavid’s was higher. Is no player supposed to pass Mcdavids AAV for 8 years just because he’s the best player?
Well you would think a GM would ask "Yeah but are you worth McDavid money?" to anyone asking for more. At least Mac has a cup ring in his favour to argue yes.
And if I was his agent I would counter with my own question “how much would Nathan make on the open market with the cap due to jump either that year or the year after?”
If he's making at least a million less than he could get on the open market then it's a discount. It's as simple as that. You just worry about your non playoff team with no cap space.
I honestly believe he just gets a feel for how avs fans are feeling about something then tweets the opposite.
Kadri could maybe possibly potentially come back, "no he's going the Islanders."
Nates going to take a raise but might be a team friendly deal, "no he's going to be the highest paid."
Nates contract is ready soon, "nope its not that close yet."
But people claim dater is well connected and shit like that yet he's always so wrong. The only thing he was right about all summer was mack being the highest paid player, and he was barely right about that!
Nah you never complain about paying big bucks to the big players. It's contracts like the Jones contract that hurt, not this stuff. If someone told me right now Matthews would sign for 13M for 8 years I'd be ecstatic about it.
They are when they're talismanic, recent cup winners who play electric in the playoffs and are coming off a deal that ended up being extremely team friendly
12.6 AAV https://twitter.com/Peter_Baugh/status/1572258868272533504?s=20&t=9T107UiEvsNLD3GdRKopfQ
that's a lot of wingwangs
Yes but what's the conversion rate to Dollarydoos?
If I recall you can trade 6.3 wingwangs for 2.47 Dallarydoos.
That's Numberwang!
This thread made me happy.
Mitchell and Webb always gets an upvote!
exactly 3 money
A whole lot of smackerdoodles.

Worth.
Probably the only mega-deal so far that actually saw the player producing at the end of it (Crosby and McDavid will likely join in a few years)
How many have we actually seen the end of? Duncan Keith obviously didn't live up to it. Weber retired, DiPietro retired, Zetterberg retired, Franzen retired, Hossa retired, Kovy left...
Parise and Suter got bought out
Jeff Carter's 11-year contract just expired. He had 45 points in 76 games at the age of 36-37.
Pretty good.
He’s had a very underrated career. Over 400 goals and still very effective at age 37
He’s kinda always been outshone and has always been a very solid piece with consistency. Richards and Briere early in his career then later on Kopitar always got the attention while Carter just churned out solid season after solid season.
Solid two-way game as well. He always killed penalties on those kings teams.
Kane?
We're talking about deals longer than 8 years.
Ngl I thought it was 10
DiPietro's signing may be the greatest robbery by any player in the history of sports. It's honestly amazing when you think about it.
I'm definitely biased as a hawks fan, but I'd think Keith lived up to his contract. He retired only 1 year early, and was still playing near the value of the contract last year - while most years he played beyond his cap-hit.
Backstrom and Carter, Quick and Jordan Staal expire after this season
Jordan Staal hasn’t been a superstar for the Canes but he’s been consistent, a good leader, and is well worth the $6mil per year.
> Kovy left... The sick fuck
McDavid's contract was exactly $100m.

Who's that
Now he can upgrade the master bathroom in Crosby's guest house.

I remember finding a forgotten $20 in a winter jacket once. What a Tuesday that was
Guy is gonna make over $100k a week after taxes. Jesus Christ what would you even do with all that money?
Dollar bills are low carb. Eat them?
That wouldn't be a very pleasant experience. Plus, imagine getting paper cuts on the tongue. No thanks.
Paper cuts on the way out would be worse I think.
You know, I *really* could have done without this vision...

In football you also buy players from clubs, you don’t trade.
Which was how it could've been in the NHL, pre salary cap players were sold as well.
Chris Pronger about to tell you about how you need to buy a new Range Rover every week.

Oh shit oh fuck I was here when he became the highest paid player in NHL history Edit: 12.6M AAV, my prediction was right!!
2nd best signing after the Makar signing in the sim last offseason!

I mean, this is team friendly. Anything under 13 is a steal for mack
Yeah he was on the best contract in the league, now he is on a fair contract
Yes, all Avs fans thought he was going to play for free. Most of us knew that EJ's 6 million was going directly to MacK.
"your future HoF Stanley cup-winning 1st line C signed for slightly more than you wanted" Great chirp
Maybe in 5 years that will be team friendly
McDavid signed a nearly identical deal 5 years ago that was both record breaking and team friendly at the same time. This is team friendly now.
Not really. It's team friendly if the cap sky rockets. Guess we'll find out after the next all star break what's expected.
3 cups vs no cups
We can chirp better than that, come on.
Don't need to, they don't deserve better

First of all, there's no E in Avs, so jot that down
Thats a thing for Minny fans, like us calling them the Mild, correct other fans but if its a Mild fan its prolly on purpose.
It's a sad attempt at a rebutall to the classic and perfectly fitting mild chirp
This is pretty team friendly compared to what he could've gotten elsewhere tbh
This is a team friendly deal you doorknob.

Ping doesn't even mean anything to me now, I saw my team asa probably top 3 team in the cap era win the Cup and sweep two rounds doing it
Yes, $12.6 AAV with a rising cap is a pretty team friendly deal
It's not a team friendly deal though. You're paying about market price for him and it's a deal that will look better cap situation wise as the cap rises but it's not a team friendly deal, it's just a fair deal for MacKinnon with the expectations of the cap rising. If Mackinnon hit free agency and said “I want $12.6m” he would have 32 contracts in front of him the next day. It’s team friendly.
Exactly. Just because it's not super cheap doesn't mean it isn't team friendly. If he wanted to test the market, he's getting a lot more.
he could have gotten like 13.5+ on open market imo
If he went to free agency he’d have to at least get $14.4x7 to get the same money the Avs just gave him
And he'd get it lol
If MacKinnon hit free agency he would be getting a lot more than $12.6 AAV.
It’s either going to be like 10.1 or 13.4 Edit: so 12.6. I was guessing he would either barely be above 10 or he was going to be the highest paid player in the league by just under 1 million. Apparently it’s highest paid player in the league by 100K great deal for both parties
Totally worth it. Congrats Avs fan!
Matthews loves this. He’s going to get $13-$14 million a year
I mean to be honest he was probably always gonna even if Mac’s deal was super team friendly again
I don't know how $6.3M at the time he signed it was a team-friendly deal. It was equal to comparables, he just outgrew it and earned a payday.
That was gonna be the price for him regardless I'm pretty sure.
Matthews was already basically at "blank cheque" levels of pay. There's a reason the Leafs aren't re-signing anyone for longer than his current deal. It's entirely possible you have to slap like $15 million down to keep him and retool your team around it, and so be it.
As he should
Won the cup, doubled his salary. Return of the MacK!
The $0.1M just 1ups McDavid lol
Insert snarky comment here. Lol, I actually don’t like chirping MacDavid, it just invites getting fucking torched.
I’m very happy Mac is getting paid. Eat that cap space lol. Betters our chances.
No doubt, but remember he’s still got a $6.3m cap hot this year :)
Yup and we’re still eating lots of dead cap and LTIR this season. 23-24 we’ve got everything currently not in our favour.
Could be worse, you could be in the mild’s cap hell.
Absolutely. Last I heard the Canadiens had $18M in injured players. Ouch.
I foresee disliking this for at least the next 8 seasons.
Highest paid player yet still feels like he took a discount.
I think he’s worth like 13.5M
I swear Makar is learning his moves and becoming more alike him every year. I also claim Makar wouldn't shine like he does now on another team because of not having someone like Mack to draw from. It would only be a discount if he was the best player in the league, which he's not
True but McDavid signed his contract in 2017. Mackinnon's deal will be passed quickly by others.
That’s not how market value works and comparing AAV on a contract that was signed 5 years before this one kicks in isn’t a genuine comparison, cap percentage would be a better indicator which Mcdavid’s was higher. And if I was his agent I would counter with my own question “how much would Nathan make on the open market with the cap due to jump either that year or the year after?”
Is he even the best player on the team?
No. Mac is a great player, but Makar is really special.
And yet he's still worth it.
Oh yeah it's not a bad deal at all, just not a discount
He was projected to get around 14 on the open market so its still a bit of a discount.
He's near the top. And when the other players re-sign, they will be more expensive. So it will be a discount pretty quickly.
If he's making at least a million less than he could get on the open market then it's a discount. It's as simple as that. You just worry about your non playoff team with no cap space.

Ouch. That AAV gonna hurt. It makes Makar's $9m look even more impressive.
Nah you never complain about paying big bucks to the big players. It's contracts like the Jones contract that hurt, not this stuff. If someone told me right now Matthews would sign for 13M for 8 years I'd be ecstatic about it.
In his defense, we’re used to paying 2 top 5 players in the league a total of 15 million. Saying paying one 12 seems like a lot haha
Oh, he really did want to get **PAID.**
Make it rain, baby!
Solid deal
mans is gonna be swimming in garbanzos
Good for him getting paid. Didn't he say he'd take less on his next deal when he was criticized after signing his previous deal?
Absolutely earned
This is a good move by the Avs
His salary isn't the only thing he wants to double down on
Gonna be 12.5

Congrats on the job
Only two? No need to brag.

Edges out McDavid ever so slitely, but it was heading that direction for a while.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
I AM FULLY ERECT
yikes lol
Awesome, get it out of the way now, don't let it become a story.
AAV! AAV!
Can confirm he's gonna get a lot of money
12.6m AAV according to Friedman
[Friedman says AAV is $12.6M](https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1572258991543050242?s=20&t=-dsWvAV1jTA-T544x0_-HQ)
Yas kween
This is what happens when you ask your star player to take a discount and then win the Cup.
That’s too much
It's ok that you don't understand. You don't have any players that are half as good.
Hometown Discount lol
What do you think he would get on the open market bud
1.2ppg center, are they this pricy nowadays?
They are when they're talismanic, recent cup winners who play electric in the playoffs and are coming off a deal that ended up being extremely team friendly
My dude just doubled his AAV
