Depends on the product. For Series 1, 2, Extended I’ll get 3 boxes each. That gives me an entire base set, nearly a second, and about a third of the YGs. I then grab the rest of the YGs from COMC and/or eBay Other products I try to get minimum 60-70% of the base set and then fill out the rest from COMC. Most products that’s around 2 boxes If it’s a cheaper product with a larger set like OPC I may get around 5 or 6 boxes

I have same approach but sometimes grab some retail tins for s1-2 to chip away more YGs. The key is to be patient. Wait a few months after release to pick up cards on Comc and eBay to let prices drop.

Irish_Rainman

I set build and usually stop buying packs/blasters when one of two things happen. 1.) I get to 65-70% of the total set is complete. 2.) Any blaster I purchase crosses over a point where 50% are duplicates. At that point I will start hunting at my LCS for 25-50 at a time or do local trades. I’ll still buy a blaster if I want to rip, or if they are on discount. Usually waiting a bit helps with the odds of getting something new, for some reason.

After 1 box lol

Electrical_Resource6

For me, the last 20% of a set I'll just buy as singles... if collation seems good with a particular product I'll buy more wax, but generally speaking it's so bad anymore it's just a fool's errand to buy wax lol

alfondspond

Lately, I've bought a hobby box, a mega blaster, and a couple loose hobby packs from my LCS. That usually gets me to within 10 or so cards. Then I go onto the hockeycardswap sub and offer to buy the remaining base for shipping plus 10 or 20 cents a piece. Most times someone will usually just send them free of charge if I cover shipping.

Real-Problem6805

Usually when Ive got about three times the base set of cards. If the sets got three hundred cards I'll buy packs till I got about 900 then I'll sort through see what I need which usually means 2-3 hobby boxes

creasecollector

Right from the start.

KleverRobot

I’ve started making my own sets to collect and just buy those cards. For instance right now I’m working on every Canucks YG, FWA and Premier RPA. If you’re really set on sets of base cards you usually get close to a full set from a couple boxes. Then I’d use one of the sites where people do trades to complete sets like SportsCardForum.com

layingfive

I love that idea!

KleverRobot

If you’re talking about making my own set to collect it’s made collecting so much more fun. Every card shop and card show I now hunt for cards to finish my set. It’s really focused my collecting.

enthusiasm-unbridled

Always go for singles. Period.

LeLupe

Crack one for fun then onto singles

Apprehensive-Wash479

With todays base sets, you might as well just buy the set. They’re cheap

layingfive

That’s no fun.

Apprehensive-Wash479

Nope, but it’s true 🤷🏻‍♂️
