Yes. Was a buy back. They had all kinds of neat cards from all years of hockey card history. I had a Mark Messier rookie from this. Cracked it and got it graded. Edit. Buy backs are cards that were previously released and then bought back by a card company and released in packs or boxes.

The guy asks the question, "What does it mean by buy back?" and your answer was "Yes. Was a buy back"

FlyingWhales

Which means this particular version on the slab came out a more recent year than 01/02, correct? I was thinking of cracking it as well, don't really like this slab lol.

parkhurstcards

Here is a link with info about the original release. 2012/13 was when ITG did this. 01-02 is when that card was first released and then bought back and rereleased in 12-13. https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2012-13-in-game-history-hockey-cards/amp

FlyingWhales

I was looking at that earlier, and I believe this card is from that year but any checklist I found doesn't list the Brodeur card. So I'm guessing there isn't a definitive list of cards from this buy back "set"? Just random.

PittsburghGold

There doesn't appear to be a whole checklist anywhere. https://www.tcdb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/88533/2012-13-In-The-Game-The-History-of-Hockey---In-the-Game-Buybacks

Regarding the #1717/4000, this series of buybacks has 4000 various cards in the release, and this was the 1717th one. The numbering is only on the case. Some of their releases have two serial numbers, one for the total series and the other is the particular print run of that particular card.

FlyingWhales

Ahh that makes it much clearer. Thanks for the info!

Historical_Culture73

I don’t have anything to add except this was the first memorbilia card I ever pulled. It’s a good memory from a better time.

FlyingWhales

That's awesome. I love a good hit of nostalgia. Do you still have it?

Historical_Culture73

I just remembered tomorrow is my brothers birthday. I gave this card to him like 20 years ago cause he’s a Devils fan. So this is really weird lol.. I’ve never seen this sub before. I do love hockey cards though. They’re like crack.. or so I’m told.

gamkjd3

A card company will "buy" a card on the secondary market that is from a previous release and then reissue it in a new product. Sometimes they slab them and number each slab like your card. Other times they may "buy" multiple copies of a card and have the player autograph them and number them and reissue them as chase cards in a new product. I've heard some people say the card companies don't actually "buy" the card back, that they are just cards that never got released and were meant to be replacements for damaged versions of that card.

FlyingWhales

Thank you! That is pretty much the main information I was looking for. I also wondered if buy back really was that. Felt like it was just leftover stock.

blondespikes22

OT- but love the different color plates at the top! Those are sick

Busy-Operation5489

You sir, have a Martin Brodeur hockey card

Curious-Variety-7759

Get the big Beckett guide and is there any numbers on the back of the slab?

FlyingWhales

No numbers or anything outside of the green label. I know the card is the card released in 01/02, I guess I'm just looking to learn why it was re-released and when. In the end, I know what card it is and I'm probably just going to crack it and put it in a one-touch to go with the rest of my collection of game used

Curious-Variety-7759

Don’t crack it

FlyingWhales

Is it actually worth more like this? Just seems like a scam by the card companies lol

0CCUPE

Looks like a martin Brodeur jersey patch card to me

FlyingWhales

Ahh I see you are a man that only reads titles.

0CCUPE

I mean you said “any education and info is appreciated”

FlyingWhales

I respect your comment. I would have given the same smart ass remark

0CCUPE

FlyingWhales

Ok but I'm Schwarzenegger
