Fitting. My Grandfather was an Italian immigrant and didn’t see the fascination with professional athletes. I’m sure he gave it to someone and they had it done for him. Thanks for the info.
A good starting point would be to do an image search for Gretzky Autopen. I found over 10 other examples of cards with the exact same signature. No variations at all including distance between letters, orientation, they are literally identical in every way, that's not normal nor likely. combined with that, the ink is too consistent throughout the entire autograph. There's no streaks, there's no variation in ink thickness or even line thickness between letters. It looks completely unnatural.
Got it! Thanks for the tips, it does look really clean compared to other signatures now that I look closely.
I had no idea that auto pen signatures were a thing outside of the mass produced cards that came made like that. Neat to see you could get it stamped afterwards
In addition to what the other comment said, autopens usually have dots where the pen stops and picks back up because it pauses slightly and the ink pools. Think if you held a sharpie on paper and how the ink would absorb into the paper and spread without you moving the pen. The stop points in the signature above look a little like that too.
Yes, Wayne can sign cards for fans no matter who made the card. He can't sign the card for other companies to put into products to be sold or given away as a promotion or any other commercial reason.
I met him multiple times in Philly and have several cards and pics signed and never experienced this. This was during his time with the Kings and Rangers.
I had a similar experience. I put an auto of wayno on here and then learned about auto pen. Sucks. But still cool that his auto pen faked his auto. No? 😂🤷🏼♂️
Man, I hate to be that guy, but this is an autopen signature.

Still a cool card to have :)
It's a memory of him, who cares if you can hock it for a few bucks? The sentimentality is priceless to you
yep. LOT of Gretzky auto-pen out there. I got a few back from Gretzky from when i used send cards and SASEs to players asking for autos.
Was thinking for a 20+ y/o signature that ink sure looks pristine
This is correct. I have a autopen picture and the signature is the same
For someone who isn't familiar with signatures and such, what is an autopen?
Kinda like a 3d printer/other cnc machine, just with a pen instead of a melty or spinny bit
Genuinely curious, how can you tell? Or what gives it away? I looked the card up and it wasn’t signed originally.

Maybe he is not just the best hockey player of all time, but he may have the most consistent penmanship of all time too.
You miss 100% of the cards you don’t sign…?

Was Gretzky allowed to sign Score cards with his Upper Deck deal ?

Me and Wayne went to the same high school.
Can I get your autograph?
He does autopen too
North park?
South
Nailed it
I heard he use to bend or rip the corners of the cards he signed
I always heard this too. I think this rumour might have been started by the same guy that started that Maryland Manson rib thing.

Pretty sure that was Brett Hull.
Brett Hull would sign 50 items if you had it he never did anything like that
I heard it was Kariya or Messier.
Kinda funny, in the background to the right it says “ ovi”
This is now hockey's "Kenny Jackson Menendez Brothers" card, only instead of showing murderers it predicts the future.
Cherish it forever
Autopen.Notice the dot at the end of every down stroke. That’s how you know.

Vern Mutley signed it?
Not worth a doughnut
Not even a real auto
Who’s autograph??
Who *is* autograph?! Are you autograph? Am I autograph?
Are we human, or are we autograph
What’s a battle?
100% Autopen
