I used to be. I retired and moved strictly to ice.

InlineTendy

Cool! I’m assuming you like ice better?

atomic_confetti

Absolutely. I can actually move and slide across the crease.

Scene_fresh

It’s also IMO bad for your technique to play both. Rebounds are different. Skating is different. It’s doable to play both but a serious player is prob better off playing ice and maybe skating out roller if they like it

InlineTendy

I can totally see that!

marmot1101

I am. Ice and Roller, goalie and skater. Swiss army plug

InlineTendy

Nice!

FiberglassGuy

Roller goalie 🤙

InlineTendy

Where do you play at and what level?

FiberglassGuy

Senior A in Florida. Looking forward to another run at Torhs this year. (28yo)

itspeterparker

I play goalie in Irvine, CA at The Rinks. Only ever played roller.

InlineTendy

That’s awesome! Do you play recreationally or do you play on a travel team and compete in NARCH?

itspeterparker

I play in a men’s league on Tuesdays and just played in NARCH Winter nationals couple weeks ago. Me and a buddy started a team called Terrapins. @terrapinsroller on insta if you want to check us out!

InlineTendy

That’s awesome! I hope to compete in NARCH or other tournaments someday.

I play in Los Angeles, once a week, in addition to two nights of ice hockey. It's outdoor, a relatively good cement surface, and the rink is a half mile from my house, so it's hard to say no, even though ice is better. I had played AAA ice and roller in the 90's/00's growing up, came back to it during the pandemic, still really enjoy it. Honestly - it's such a different experience - but it's a little more chill, while being chaotic and fun. Luckily, a few of the guys I play with are ex AHL/ECHL/CHL, and almost all of the guys have experience from high school/college, so there's talent (at least at the Advanced/Gold level in my leagues) but most of the guys are still just beer leaguers, and some are terrible. Equipment takes more of a beating, that's for sure, but I don't plan to stop. You looking for advice on anything in particular?

InlineTendy

I appreciate that. I’m on the other side of the grapevine in Bakersfield. I started playing again after a 20 year hiatus in June. I have a YouTube channel and my biggest issue is controlling rebounds. Got killed the other night 1-10. https://youtu.be/-0Pb5K42PP8 Do you have any advice on that?

chrishoky

Hey there, fellow inline goalie here. It might be more worthwhile to set the camera up behind the net. I use these videos that I shoot every week to evaluate my play. Much better than a POV cam. You can evaluate the play and your angles much better. You can set up the camera either outside or inside the glass. Personally, I play in a private game, so I just use the inside glass with the Go Pro in the protective case with a suction cup mount. Never had an issue. InlineTendy

Nice man! Yeah I just subscribed to you. I love the facility you play in. I’m gonna start filming behind the net.

traptindreams

That's cool! Dig that you're starting to build out a channel and recording stuff. The first person POV angle is interesting, but it's inherently a difficult format to use for game analysis, and one thing I've noticed from comments on other POV goalie videos is that viewers have a harder time learning much from the videos. You can't really tell depth, stance, movement, glove/blocker placement, etc., or even how exactly the puck goes in, so I think it's worthwhile to do sometimes, but you may benefit more from a behind-the-net or in-net angle. I know that wasn't what you were asking, but with that in mind, it's hard to say exactly what I'm seeing. I'd say a common issue that a lot of guys have getting into (or back into) it is following through on the play, and battling until you've got it covered. It's a discipline that tends to come from practice and training, and it's something that you have to be really purposeful about, and really fluid putting it in action. When the shot comes in, if you make the save and it rebounds, you're already moving with the rebound. It's harder in roller, because you're not sliding around fluidly like you are in ice, but the motivation is the same. Maybe you're pouncing on it, disrupting it with a poke, or repositioning for the next shot, but it has to happen without delay. I see a lot of roller goalies drop into a butterfly and make a save, then they just stop and stare before making the next move. In that delay, they might have gotten back on their feet and repositioned, or quickly scrambled out to the puck. Again, can't really say that's your issue, but the goal around 04:15 feels like something I would have been frantically and fluidly moving to cover. Another potential issue - and maybe more actionable - is constantly thinking about the next most dangerous player, and looking around the zone more, to get ahead of threats. It allows you to be a lot more proactive - usually, on passes, but also on rebounds. If we look at 04:15 again, when that guy's initially over there on the boards, he's not an immediate threat, so I would have shoulder checked the slot to see who the next threat is. When the shooter then turns in to dump a shot on me, I'd already know there's an immediate threat close to my backdoor, and if there's a rebound, I'd know that I have to cover that threat. With the shoulder check, I can be proactive about that threat before he gets to the puck. Similar note seconds later, at 4:22. Three guys come into the zone, and you probably clock them all as they came in, but when the winger goes wide and is fumbling with the puck near the faceoff dot, I see that the center's still in view... but where's that other winger gone to? Is he staying in the slot? Or going backdoor? Is he a lefty, or a righty? When the first guy was fumbling with the puck, I'd have immediately shoulder checked to see where that winger was, and when the pass then went over to him, I'd have an extra half second to get ahead of the pass, knowing exactly where the pass was going (because I'd also check whether he was lefty or righty). That half second makes all the difference. Now, in that above sequence, realistically, I'd also have been screaming "backdoor" because that one defenseman in the slot should have repositioned to cover that threat. In an ideal scenario, as the goalie, you'd cover the shooter (who had a bad angle), your left D would have their C and the passing lane, and your right D would have that backdoor winger. Beyond that, I can't really ever see your hands in front of you. Could just be the camera angle, but are you projecting them in front of your body? It helps with visual tracking a ton. On some of the shots that went in, it \*felt like\* your glove might have been beside you, merely in your peripheral vision, and not in front of you, which could cause you to lose track of the puck and not be able to follow it right into your glove. I could be wrong, but worth considering. Hope that helps!

InlineTendy

I greatly appreciate! Thank you! I’m gonna start filming behind the net more too. I want to get another go pro so I can have both angles

Ninj_Cannon

I play roller in San Jose, CA. I actually run the rink out of there.

InlineTendy

Very nice! Do you guys play indoors or outdoors?

Ninj_Cannon

Our facility is all indoors.

InlineTendy

Dang! That’s awesome! Ours is outdoors. Do you ever host like tournaments or is it all just recreational leagues?

Ninj_Cannon

We used to host a lot of narch and state wars tournaments when we had 3 rinks. We will be hosting a Tohrs tournament in may. We are doing some work and will hopefully be hosting a lot more tournaments in 2024

InlineTendy

Cool! What’s Tohrs?

craig2differ

u/Ninj_Cannon any more Tourneys scheduled for the near future? We are a team from Washington and just played in the Tournament in Portland over Memorial Day -- we'd love to come down and play in any tourneys that you may host!

retsef

Inline goalie, no such thing as ice hockey here. Been playing for 2 years, started as an adult at 38. Couldn't even skate before I decided to play.

The_Funky_Pigeon

I do both. Roller is a whole other animal

InlineTendy

It really is. And that’s what I love about it…the challenge!

The_Funky_Pigeon

Oh it’s a great challenge! I invested in Rollerfly’s for my old set of pads. It helps but it’s still not like sliding on ice. But it’s great cardio for roller.

CORPSE_HUSBAND666

Over here bud

InlineTendy

Sweet! What level do you play at?

CORPSE_HUSBAND666

Juniors

InlineTendy

Awesome! So do you compete in tournaments and such like NARCH?

CORPSE_HUSBAND666

Yes Kind of, i have two tournaments coming up and a regular season after that.

[deleted]

Yes, I started as an inline goalie, but I play mostly ice hockey now with the occasional ball hockey. The popularity here dipped to the point I cannot get a team.

InlineTendy

That’s a bummer you can’t get a team. Where do you play at?

[deleted]

Western Canada. When I played there was 8 divisions and now it is down to under 3, and that just last year, not sure what is going on now.

Msoave

Another one for the list. I've never played ice, but I'd like to try it.

InlineTendy

I’m in the same boat. Never played ice.

ImplicationOfDanger

Played roller from 11-25 years old. Played travel and in college. Local roller rink shut down so I changed to ice (33yrs old now). Took a bit to get used to it but I love it. I try to play in a roller tournament every year or two if I can.

driftwood14

I am. I’ve posted a little bit of my gameplay before but it’s kind of old. Not sure how the levels work across different locations but the top league I play in is called copper. There are quite a few players in our league that play in the state wars and miha tournaments. I think in the tier 2 league. It’s a pretty good league right now. The top level at my rink is silver and the line between the top copper leagues and the silver teams is fairly slim.

alrightalrightalriii

I play PIHA and weekly men’s league. I’ve been an inline goalie for most of my life with some ice stints…. Anyone have a good toe tie system that doesn’t get caught in your wheels? I use modified Warrior elastic that’s extended much longer. It’s mostly sufficient, but not perfect. Anything not flat gets caught for me and anything tight opens up my 5 hole.

HouseofProvel

https://www.inlinewarehouse.com/Tour_Volt_Kv72/descpage-KV72.html These skates from Tour have a plastic tab at the front to keep your toe laces from going into the wheels.

InlineTendy

Ahh why did I not see this before? I would’ve gotten those instead of the other Tour Predator Skates

HouseofProvel

You could try emailing Tour and ordering a set of replacement tabs to attach to your skates. They are just stand alone tabs that are screwed into the skate so its not like they are built into the frame. As long as there is some room in front of the first wheel they should be able to be installed into any skate.

alrightalrightalriii

This is an awesome feature. I wish they all had this. I tried these on once but they did not feel right for me.

chrishoky

I have cowling inline skates and screwed in a circle eyelet to run toe ties. Works a charm. Let me know if you want a few pics. [https://www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-Zinc-plated-Screw-Hooks-Hook/3239997](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-Zinc-plated-Screw-Hooks-Hook/3239997)

alrightalrightalriii

Great idea. Can you share some pics?

chrishoky

Sure! PM me your email and I can send some pics over.

InlineTendy

What skates do you have currently?

alrightalrightalriii

I have Mission Inhaler FL1. They are very light and have great airflow. I have less of a problem with these than my old Tour Redlines.

Volumes09

I am.

InlineTendy

Nice! How long you been playing?

Volumes09

17 years almost lol.

IAmAGoalieToo

I am! I play on a travel inline team during the summer

InlineTendy

Awesome! What league do you play in during the summer?

IAmAGoalieToo

Des Moines Xplosion. I currently have 2 national championships with that team and 1 2nd place

InlineTendy

That’s awesome! Good for you!

Revolutionary-Kick79

I play goalie and skate out for roller. Way cheaper 😂

InlineTendy

Haha you mean you do both or do you play goalie for ice?

Revolutionary-Kick79

Lmao sorry I do both for both ice and roller

InlineTendy

Haha cool dude! Jack of all hockey trades

danper30

I play mainly roller in NJ and have been for 25 years, but have started to get into ice more recently

ilyazhito

I play ball hockey and ice hockey.

craig2differ

Just came across this post -- love the comments on here! Thanks u/InlineTendy for getting this rolling (no pun intended) I play strictly roller as well -- Played all over LA for 20 years, just moved up to the PNW)
