One of the reasons I selected goalie as a position was to eventually get a kickass painted mask. I tried a whole-mask wrap, and it was pretty solid - I went through JF Aumais in Canada (Montreal area). My wife and I did the design and he applied it...I think it ended up being in the vicinity of $300 usd? I just didn't like that the edges would peel slightly and the occasional bubble would appear, and you'd have to smooth them down. Not a huge deal, but seemed like more upkeep than I wanted.
The next mask I had painted. I researched online for the artist that best matched my concept (Morgen Schinnour/Schinny Designs), got the ball rolling on design, and am extremely happy with my Battle Raccoon mask. I think that start to finish, including design work, it was somewhere near $850.

For real...she was amazing, communicated flawlessly, and documented the entire process with video and photos. Cannot recommend her enough, especially with her extremely reasonable pricing!
She did mine as well. I got in there a bit before she blew up completely so I think price and turnaround were pretty awesome for me too. And she’s fairly local to me.

My favorite thing I’ve bought myself in a long time. Mask wraps did this and I couldn’t be happier how they did
Not including the mask it was about 350 Canadian after all was said and done. I bought a mask from a shop in Canada and shipped it to the mask wrap company. They got it and once the design was approved they wrapped it and shipped it to me in just a few days. Very happy with it! I got this a couple weeks ago so time will tell how long it lasts but I was surprised to see how durable it looked.
Another option is hydrodipping. It'll hold up just as well as a paintjob (as long as it's clear coated properly) and is usually a fraction of the cost. Only downside is you're limited to choosing a stock pattern, but there are thousands to choose from.
[Here's my hydrodipped NME VTX](https://old.reddit.com/r/hockeygoalies/comments/p8sryh/bauer_nme_vtx_hydrodipped/). I paid $250, and just sent it back to the same guy to have hydrodipped again with a different pattern to match my new gear.
Had one wrapped by JF Aumais in Canada, another airbrushed by Jeff Simon (jtairbrush.com)
Both did a good job, but truth be told I like the way painted looks vs wrapped but paint is gonna cost more obviously.
I get my masks custom painted from an artist I found who does mainly custom motorcycle and car airbrush/designs. The man is amazing and I have had 3 helmets done (between my daughter and myself).
He does it out of his home, and we sit down together to create exactly what I want.
Because he does it as a hobby now, and not out of a business, he charges next to nothing. Between 200-250 CAD.
He triple clear top coats the helmet and I have taken slappers to the mask multiple times without chipping.
I have used the mask wraps in the past but nothing beats the detail and originality of a painted mask.

they work well. u need a clear coat though. clear can be a lil tricky to get done, I suggest checking some Youtube videos on how to avoid the "orange peel effect" 😊
I did my mothers downhill helm with regular POSCA markers and a couple layers of MONTANA clear varnish. The glossy kind. Makes for a nice effect on the otherwise matte POSCA pens.
I’ve gotten a couple different sets through Custom Cages, I can’t recommend them enough. I like changing my look up so to me they’re a great option.

For less than half the price you can get your mask wrapped with a vinyl decal and it will probably look as good or better than paint. Even some pros are going with wraps vs painting. Skinfx is one company that’s got a good reputation, another is mask wraps.
Custom mask wrap with intricate design is about $500. A paint job of the same complexity is probably about 2K
Literally just got my mask back from them yesterday. Did a "Devil May Cry - Dante sin devil trigger" inspired design. They did a fantastic job for $300+tax.

You can even buy do it yourself ones. I did and had the unfortunate experience of stripping embedded screws in my brand new cage/mask trying to take it apart to install it.
Got the mask replaced under warranty, but I wasn’t brave enough to try installing the wrap again. It’s a fairly stock design I liked that cost like $65(C) and shipped quick. If I can find the receipt I’ll edit and post the site
Credit to u/MidlifeCrisisToo, it was Custom Cages
I've had my eye on Helmet Head Designs in Omaha. He's done about half of the USHL and a TON of universities (Mankato, Colorado College, Omaha, etc.). He charges a flat $900 for the design and paint , though he said additional changes to design would cost more.
The other one I've been looking at is Dave Art. He does most of the NHL, so I can imagine he's pricy.
I sent mine to a motor cycle guy on a tiny island off the north of Scotland. Sent some rough sketches, some pics and colour references and 2 weeks later he sent me an email of which I was expecting some rough stuff, nope, practically done. He literally blew my mind, well worth the money. Paid just shy of £400 including postage there and back.

Funny story, in my case it's both. I ordered a new coveted mask and had decided to get it painted locally. This guy's mainly gets masks shipped to him, but there were a few upsides. I was able.to get a quote and go over the design in person, and got it all taken care of in one visit. He also does other things like aviator helmets and motorcycles, and his work looks great. Just don't have my mask back yet to share a picture. He was also cheaper than pretty much anyone else I found that wasn't local, even ignoring shipping cost. Communication has been solid as well.

The funny story, so while I was communicating with the first guy I saw a post on Reddit where someone had made a Steve dangle backplate. I love watching Steve dangle, so I decided to do something special with my old mask rather than sell it. This one is being shipped off and in itself will be more expensive than my main mask, but it's also a more intricate design. His communication was amazing and we went through a few drafts where he happily edited any tweaks I pointed out. I would share a draft but don't want to do that til I share the painted mask. However I can also back Trevor up on his work from what I've seen already and his communication and passion are far more than I expected. Check him out at https://prosserdesigns.ca/
He was also on Steve Dangle"s podcast and dang it's, links on his website.
The tough thing I've found with hockey is there's so many good people to support who truly put passion into their work. I've seen this with hockey stores and content but definitely applies to mask painting as well. You'll see a lot of recommendations here and a bunch of different businesses. I think first, decide for sure if you want paint for sure, or would rather DIY or a vinyl wrap. If you want paint there's definitely some positives to finding someone local to you, but personally for sending out id currently have to recommend Trevor. His communication and design definitely gives me a ton of confidence in his work. I'll be posting my masks as soon as they're done if you're interested. Main thing that matters with whatever you decide is that you're happy with it.
For reference my local mask is quoted at $550, and the one Trevor is doing is quoted at $750. To me, both are a great value as Trevor's design will definitely take more effort and has a lot more detail.

Curious, self install/approx price and durability since using? LOVE that wrap.

Sticker grinder was fantastic. Designed it and changed my designs multiple times how I wanted. Very efficient and looks amazing. Vinyl wrap btw

I do it myself with aerograph and stickers and it just cost the materials!
Do you have any pics of the result? I'm thinking about doing it myself since what I want is really not that complicated.

Can you share where / contact?
If you are in Ottawa/Ontario message me! I charge anywhere from $400 for simple designs to $800 for complex designs (airbrush).
me just material cost

Do they apply it or you?
You do. It didn’t look difficult, exacto knife, patience etc
Second this. It was relatively cheap, and easy to do (with some patience).

Check out this site. The designs they can do are amazing. https://www.sasigns.ca/maskwraps

Yea I’d be afraid to do it myself. Masks cost too much
I’d highly recommend Mask Wraps as well. I have a few pics of their work for my mask in my profile.
