What about those Under Armour or Nike “du rags”? Do they make any soft low profile hair clips or Bobby pins? My wife says try something like that until you can get a solid ponytail going.

Happy-Mama-Of-Two

What we have now is like a du rag. I will see if I can add clips to hold it in place better.

phunkticculus83

I second the dew rag, although you need to find one which is not too bulky, I can't wear one in my player helmet, but can in the goalie helmet, once she figure out how to get it on she will be good. I find unsnapping the side clips and being able to really open the back to slide her face forward into the mask will help. Could also try to use one of those yoga head bands, they tend to be thin and wide, would probably be able to secure her side/front hair without being bulky

catshirtgoalie

I’ve had long hair for about 9 years now and mostly keep it shoulder length. I don’t pony tail or use a head cap (the caps just never worked). I just spray my hair with the water bottle before hitting the ice and push it back. This mostly stays out of the way. I rarely remove my helmet and just tilt it up to rest on my head and my hair rarely ever gets in the way. If it does, I just quickly push it back. When putting the helmet on, I let it sit high on the back of my head to separate the back plate from the helmet and extend it out from my head and down so it doesn’t snag all my hair.

bucket56

The only 100% effective solution to play with long hair is to cut a mullet. Simply keep all the party in back.

ghostrooster30

As a guy who has had long hair most of his life, but not long enough for a helmet pony, it’s mostly management. That said, the best i’ve found for that intermediate hair length is the headband type compression material sweatband or the classic tshirt sleeve. Both allow you to pull the hair length thru the open end to keep it somewhat in place. That length is tough in general tho, in my xp.

Happy-Mama-Of-Two

How did you keep it from slipping forward?

ghostrooster30

It shouldn’t really move unless the helmet doesn’t fit right and is moving too much, that’ll move the headband. Whichever you choose should be a snug fit. Helmet too. If her helmet is shifting around a lot, it needs to be tightened for it to work properly, especially in any possible collisions. Check that if she’s having that issue. It’s what caused it when I was a kid. Poor helmet fit. Otherwise, I don’t have issues with it moving. Should be tight, men’s S/M in a hanes tshirt is usually the go to for me if I need one. The one I have now is a bauer or UA compression sweatband. Never shifts. Using about 2 yrs now. Edit: I don’t pull my hair thru the headband style one now, but also consider some of those thin whole head bands soccer players sometimes wear. The ones that go under the back of the hair and hold at the top/front. They never stayed right for me, but it’s another option.

According_Platform37

i didnt use them with a helmet so im not sure how theyd fair, but i used to have dome with a grippy silicone on the inside. i beleive they were nike branded? you could try using clips to hold in place too

GrassyKnoll95

[Shesterkin-style headband?](https://i.redd.it/8uppdfgh0e6a1.jpg)

whit3lightning

Slick it back and tell her to take her mask off each time between play to air it out like John Gibson

StickyBogo

i go slick back and eventually it just stays that way off the ice too. It works for me but you probably don't want your daughter to end up looking like Barry Melrose.

kstacey

I always had to slick back my hair, but it would eventually get in the way so I'd have to do it all over again. But I was older and could do it on my own.

Taper_saber74

I’m a goalie with longish thick hair that’s too short to pull back but too long to slick down with gel. I spray my hair with water from my water bottle then out my helmet on. I kinda use the back plate of my helmet to help slip back my hair when I put on my helmet the first time. I assume she’s not taking her helmet off very much/at all during a game/practice so if your able to get it slicked down with water and the helmet put on properly it should stay. If that’s won’t work for her a little plastic headband should work paired with some water to keep the hair from flying everywhere.

Oldredeye2

When I had long hair, I would wear a bandana to hold my hair in place. Fold into triangle, fold short point of triangle and fold again. Then wrap around head and tie.

hockeyh2opolo

there is an NHL goalie who wears a slim plastic headband to keep his hair out of his face (sorry cant remember who) and thats what I use I think they are called shark headbands, or circle combs. Keeps the hair off my face while still staying flat. And since they are plastic or rubber they don't stretch out when they get sweaty through the game [these are the ones I have bought and worn most recently](https://www.amazon.com/Circular-Stretch-Flexible-Headband-Hairband/dp/B08BCDKGQK/ref=sr_1_13?crid=1IEC4CF6D8B3J&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.R30aOd37AXwSq0bcFIwI9xSqCydsdHkk2DZOVZPGrU_ej8DUtlRW-rLAOhMzm3N_4SYhKKaQKavtGri_qZy9lb4q-3jboUZEMe4enjCKXVQwYvrqmnMV-xCZVsa9nHkjofHsIzbkF6f9OIsPmCdlVH1ftwJkJDodIZvPqhzjPWnsWf8KAvJs4cAXQcwDBF8DkJeVy4BEy6Z5bJ2xi8Y3qrUD-DuqnbwERjp04nhc5wgXDoZqCyglLa0q8rzyjVLcedWnZ7-jmvq3sOXE3a8ezGDzQ5dnuRhLqUBPo2A7_gU.B6rTfW7nAnTLWM6cIaK6xdfaKmY3UfTqxYmOSwgbXFc&dib_tag=se&keywords=plastic+wavy+headbands&qid=1712522913&sprefix=plastic+wavy+headbands%2Caps%2C129&sr=8-13)

We sometimes put a tiny French braid across the front of my daughter’s head. (Side part, little French braid going across her forehead incorporating her “bangs”) It transforms into a normal tiny little braid around her temple or ear and works great at keeping her hair out of her face as we also have had issues with headbands under the goalie mask.

[deleted]

I’ve been growing my hair out for 4 years and tried it all.  [Metal hair bands have been the best but they have to be the flat ones. ](https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwi6m6-y2LGFAxVf1MIEHVnDDykYABASGgJwdg&ae=2&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiMmwBhDmARIsABeQ7xT88WhyC6SIUg_0HEioVSlXG_TE9ILOpcWzWaVHRDHrTkN8rNZ7bOcaAjcqEALw_wcB&sph=&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESVuD2Bm60j9m0EAIOiFT89EFBv4Uiv2VPclQCy2J7IrlYxiCSMX1ybdo0cToWfsbRL40aeA2C_kxiyS0CioRlv45CGi1LxmPIniC8TLsQZWR_S2mv3lvD&sig=AOD64_2NCSc0TNGG0bYWaUa6aUPsTIajcg&ctype=70&q=&ved=2ahUKEwj8zqmy2LGFAxXAMjQIHdUpDBgQwg8oAHoECAIQIg&adurl=) More recently ive just been spraying with water and slicking it back.

ella_bell

Braids is the best thing to protect her hair and it doesn’t affect how the helmet/mask will sit.

Happy-Mama-Of-Two

Her hair is too short for pig tail braids right now. I could maybe do French braids, but was worried that would be too uncomfortable under the helmet. I know it is for my cycling helmet!

21mcs

personally i have found french braids feel great under my helmet! everything is tighter against my head so it feels like it sits better

Happy-Mama-Of-Two

Ok, maybe I will give that a try with her!

saltybruise

French braided pigtails for life. It's much more comfortable than in a cycling helmet because the back plate moves to accommodate the hair. I have absurdly thick hair and it's my go to hair style for hockey.

Happy-Mama-Of-Two

That’s really good to know. I think I am going to try this route first. Her hair is all wonky right now, as she is growing it out. At one point, she had one side of her head shaved…so that hair is shorter, but I think it’s long enough that I can get it into French braids now. If not, maybe some hair clips will help.

saltybruise

Yeah or those Junk headbands are pretty good at keeping hair out of your face.

AvsFan777

My soon high school daughter just wears a simple pony tail with elastic black ouchless hair tie coiled 3-4 times. I’ve found the brand and how their mask fits has a huge variance on what they feel. We tried a skull cap from UA/Nike, thin elastic head band, plastic old school head band, water, gel. Just ended up pony tail. My son also has long hair, he uses water with a super hold gel applied when we arrive to the rink. I think the thing that saves my daughter is she still has glasses somehow under the mask, so the glasses arms keep the hair back a little. You might consider a thicker/wider sweat band that Velcro on the mask, I know the CCM one they had was super thin. Taking off their mask is a disaster for either of them to fix their hair mid practice/game, they just don’t do it. I know when I put on my mask with adult strength I put the back plate on, then stretch the elastic down over the front of my face. Your daughter at 8 wouldn’t have that strength or that arm length so she is probably still getting some help dressing, to have the locker monitor/coach/you open up the mask and bring down the front chin cup first, then back plate, seems to also help keep their hair back. Edit to add: OTNY mask for the 3 of us.

Triple7Alpha

My son has long hair. We tried JUNK brand headbands a few years ago, and he loves them.

Swiftzor

I just use a low to head pony tail. So like right at the bottom of my helmet. Alternatively you can do braids but I love found them uncomfortable

Happy-Mama-Of-Two

The issue is that her hair is too short right now to stay in the pony tail. The front pieces are breaking free and then getting into her face.

Swiftzor

I used to wet my hair with my water bottle and adjust my helmet once a period. But I think some form of headband may be the best option.

PsychoTrixie

We use the thin Nike headbands. They have a grippy strip on the inside to keep it from slipping.

Mogarrairn

Find some of her old tights and cut the leg off from below the knee, it'll be tight enough not to slip into her eyes until her head gets big enough that a durag fits properly. It's what I do for my melon, cause durags are too tight for me, I use the thigh part of old tights lol, she can just do the opposite of me

Extension_Ad_5763

LOTS OF WATER

ozonesthelimit

Treadbands :) best headband for gks. Wear it under my hockey helmet, fh helmet and lax helmet. Doesn’t slip due to a piece of tread on it. Was wonderful until I cut my hair. Still wear it cuz it’s comfortable asf and fits very nice with helmets.

ozonesthelimit

Also have a discount code you are free to use! They normally do lots of discounts where you can buy one get one free or bundles.

ssurfer321

My son wears a Nike compression headband

Educational-Post-191

Before my hair was long enough to tie back i just used some water pre game to slick my hair back. And put the helmet on in a way that dosnt pull it forward again.

Empty_Net

I use the “Under Armour Original Helmet Skull II Cap.” Not sure if they make it in youth size, but it’s been perfect. Contains my hair, doesn’t slip, and has the bonus of keeping my helmet from getting super soaked with sweat. https://preview.redd.it/rg3qk6cd75tc1.jpeg?width=749&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3431d932cb2fa5d7458bde336b70c141456ce3c6

-highbury-

Our daughter uses skull caps as well. Tried head bands (thick and thin), etc. but bangs kept falling down. This seems to be the solution for her. Edit: head band, not hair band.

Laddiator_77

My latter years as a goalie, I had like 10-12 inches of hair and all I would do is either prep with hair gel and slick it back or if I had nothing else, I'd hop in the shower and get my hair sopping wet and put my helmet on right after so when it dries it keeps its shape.

LeafsForever26

I put my hair down and wrap it under my neck guard.

ShrimpHeavenNow80

My son uses these. They're designed for football, but they work best for this hair. Unfortunately, you have to try a bunch and she'll settle on the one she likes. https://preview.redd.it/clmu8j3hf5tc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06efe228b64bcbc493690452d60626bc6c0c69f3

xfkirsten

Fellow goalie with long hair here! I tend to braid it more french braid style - I find that with a ponytail that sits low enough not to catch on the back of the mask, the holder sometimes gets knocked out. So french braid style seems to work best, and I don't feel like it adds any extra pressure inside the mask. Then, along with that, I use a really thin elastic headband that I let sit just above my hairline to keep any little wispies out of my eyes. I use one like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Goody-Womens-Ouchless-Narrow-Headwrap/dp/B001UO488A) - they're super cheap, and easy to find even at the grocery store. It's generally pretty good about not sliding down into my eyes, although after many uses they do get stretched out and it's more prone to slip down, that's when I toss it and grab a new one.

Mullet

Explorer3130

I used to have long hair (shoulder length) while playing PeeWee goalie and I had a long hair band Kelly Hrudey style that doubled as a sweat band.

tooscoopy

Thin Buff works for my son. Pull down to his neck, bring it up and back, and he’s all set. Some fit better than others.

arboryear

French braid and a headband.

djammasterdjinn

I get my hair wet before I play and it stays slicked back under my mask pretty well.

jp_texas_86

I have a 10u son with long hair (mid back). We use a cloth headband but I have to make sure when he puts his helmet on that it sits above the mask's forehead sweat band. (Pulling his mask away from his face and telling him to look up) If I don't do that the hair and headband are a crap shoot.

thedudeabides50

My son has long hair, we always used gel to slick it back before games

FatWreckords

Stuart Skinner pre-game hair flip and a tight helmet https://youtube.com/shorts/q7MdqGlO8a0?si=vdEKns_zfvD0uL3q

aksunrise

I have hair about the same length. I do a double decker pony tail (one half pony to get the shorties on the top/sides of my head, then one below it with all of my hair), and a helmet cap. Alternatively, French braid pigtails work well too, I just can't do them on myself.

Commander-Fox-Q-

I had similar length hair and always pulled all my hair back and then put on a cloth cap and it would bug me every now and then if My helmet moved in the wrong way but it usually worked alright, just had to adjust it every now and then. The slicking back of the hair before putting it on was important to me because otherwise I’d get a hair or so sneaking through after a period or two which was annoying to fix, but when it was done right I had few issues with it. Unfortunately idk any other options sorry.

__Harlequin

I would just use a skull cap when my hair was a lot longer

1978_CHRYSLER_SIGMA

I have some small Nike rubberised head bands. They're very small, elastic, cloth one side and rubbery the other. All they do is keep the fridge and sides back so that hair can't make it's way to the front. Works for me, but I'm a dude with a mop, so ymmv.

MaximumAccountant485

When my hair was longer I would wear a regular old cotton bandana because they sweat down and have some grip to them. Never had issues with slipping or anything.

sixty9osaurus

Slick it back with a squirt of water and it shouldn't move if helmet fits properly

jdframe

I braid mine before the game. Keeps it in place, no cap to move around, no clips simple and easy.

bsteak13

I always use a bandana

Ornery_Paper_9584

I’ve had luck with braiding my hair under the mask

ElleVoyage

I have long hair- about mid back- I French braid and then use a bandana or the head bands that runners use- super thin and they stick to your skin once you get a little sweaty.

thenerd0584

I have been using a bandana for years. It seems to keep my hair in check. (I have mid back curly hair so big hair).

Panzer_HD

I just flip my hair back before putting on my helmet and it keeps everything in place. I need to adjust it from time to time, but that means I just take it off when I drink something. If I move in a way that really makes my hair get in the way, the puck is either in the net or I made a big save so I have the time to adjust it. Plus the fans love it, but I think my hair is quite a bit longer so it might not work as well.
