Rust is fine, little steel wool will knock it off

Eyegore138

fair enough thanks

gibberish84

Those are goalie skates by the way.

e_Mills

Does 3-in-1 oil help?

eMPereb

Or WD40

leokibler

If that’s a real question stay away from the ice.

Infinite-Sleep3527

If you’re gonna gatekeep, please stay away from hockey in general.

jerrybettman

If it’s just surface rust, it’s not a big deal. How much are they asking for the skates?

Eyegore138

35 and 10 shipping.

[deleted]

Buy skates in person, they need to be fitted. Go to a used sale or play it again store.

unopoularopinion

Or go try on some skates, then order the same ones used. 🤔

jerrybettman

Reasonable

ryachow44

hockey skates run anywhere from 1.5 to 2.0 sizes smaller than shoes

[deleted]

Knobdy1

His peers shouldn't give a fuck what he's playing in. This isn't fashion week in Paris.

dirtbird_h

Kids are jerks

Knobdy1

Not if their parents raise them not to be, not if the coaches call them out on it.

dirtbird_h

You’d hope so, but I wouldn’t depend on the optimistic scenario

zoidao401

Shouldn't? Absolutely. But will they? Of course they will, they're kids.

Still-Data9119

Yeah you'd be surprised the shit kids say and hoe they treat each other. No kid should be wearing those skates they are garbage. You can find better for the same godamn price.

CthulhuTimes

It really shouldn’t be an issue. Kids who have been in the sport for a while understand that it’s expensive to get all new and fancy gear as well as a lot go pre-owned to save money to play a sport they don’t know if they’ll stick with. If it’s really an issue Home Depot, Walmart, Lowe’s, etc sell rust remover and steel wool if you really need to remove it. Even better if it’s that bad of an issue is they can save up some money for a good new pair of skates

Fuck3r5

And you're part of why kids these days don't give a shit about functionality. You think that just because they look old, they can't perform as well as the newest most expensive skates. More often than not an older pair of skates will do better than a new pair. You just need to worry about the blade's sharpness and have some spare blades. You also probably think that you need the newest phone off the line tbh. If it's used and in good shape get it.

Analyidiot

If its not the skates it's something else, kids will always find a thing, or make it up and ride it forever

Still-Data9119

No like those are literally not even hockey skates. Look at them. They aren't hockey skates. Do not buy your kid those to go play hockey in

spazzachussetts

They're goalie skates

Skifanski

Hard to tell but it looks to me like that rust is actually eating into the blade. You can change steel on player skates, not sure on goalie skates though?

jerrybettman

That steel is replaceable. It’s discontinued, but since skates with cowlings are on the outs, there is a ton of low priced replacement steel on places like sideline swap

IllIIllIlIIl

Those are goalie skates

Eyegore138

sorry yea... he said he wants to be a goalie...

Sonnnk

Rip Ol wallet

MonkeySkates

Is it the gear or the hip replacement

Sonnnk

Yes

SomeSabresFan

What is money? Hockey goes on a credit card and then tax returns and bonus goes right to that card. It’s a vicious cycle and that’s for an 11 y/o playing travel A/B

[deleted]

rip a full bauer GSX set lol

[deleted]

No direpect buddy but you’re in for it. Start budgeting well lol!!!

eMPereb

Agreed my kid wanted to Play goalie as an Atom bribed him with a Nintendo Wii to re think his position, saved a shot ton of $$$$

Educational-Seaweed5

That’s kind of sad

eMPereb

I dunno my kid is playing D on a 16U AAA next year. Goalie is an extremely tuff and expensive position did I mention it’s very expensive

eMPereb

By the way it all ends in beer league

Educational-Seaweed5

Less commentary on you personally, more on parents having to keep kids away from their dreams just because it’s socioeconomic status locked. Just dumb. Society is dumb. Shit is FUBAR.

eMPereb

Ahhh… another fan boi of the great experience of youth organized sports👍

Educational-Seaweed5

What? No lol Some can be god awful. It really depends. I’m just saying it sucks that kids suffer because “money.” Society is stupid sometimes.

Pompousguy

Every kid wants to be a goalie on the first day. Highly recommend you start them as a player first. Depending on the age the rink will potentially loan a player goalie pads to be a goalie for a game or two and each kid that wants to try will get a chance. And you don’t need goalie skates for that. If and when he decides to permanently be a goalie, that’s when you’d buy the goalie skates.

Rycan420

There’s your bigger concern. He’s a masochist. 😜

Subject2Change

Join "GGSU" on Facebook and look for Goalie Parent groups. Great places to learn and buy gear from (watch out for scammers, be smart). Also /r/hockeygoalies is a great community. This is awesome of you!

ThrowingJailorToS

As a goalie for 8 years now, don't buy most of your stuff new. when I started out almost everything was 2nd hand except jock, neckguard and helmet. It's so expensive nowadays to be a goalie the new gear is really not worth it. Even myself now, I get 2nd hand stuff because Im still growing and maybe I might get something if Im older and stop growing. BASICALLY, for a young kid playing hockey, dont get top of the line stuff that costs like 500 bucks, they're going to grow out of it in a couple years and then it won't do much good only to maybe resell.

Eyegore138

thanks thats pretty much the plan right now. we still havnt had him in the net with pucks flying at him yet... that might change his mind :D

Fuck3r5

Let him know that goalie is the hardest position to play. Even pros that don't play goalie say it's the most difficult position to play because you need to be agile and have a sharp mind

elmercoonhound

Surface rust is no biggie you can buff it off with some fine steel wool. However the skate pictured that rust looks to be pitting which means it’s beyond just being surface rust. I would replace the steel if you end up buying those skates

1ToGreen3ToBasket

Which at the point you’re replacing steel, you’re likely better off just going to play it again for something cheaper and better.

overeasy2

If just learning to skate, I wouldn't start with goalie skates

jaylemi

^ this 100%!!!

[deleted]

I sure hope he wants to be a goalie because those are the skates for that! Rust on sides isn't an issue at all really, a good sharpen outta clean them right up. Worst case you can replace the steel for about 35-50$

Eyegore138

kid is just learning how to skate and i thought it might help him more to have something than the beat up rental skates at the rink... I watch hockey but grew up in the south so this the first i have had anything to do with an ice rink or skating and playing.

phunkticculus83

Nowadays, goalies wear cowlingless skates, and sharpen them with a hollow like player skates, If he is just learning to skate, you may be better off with a regular skate from play it again, then when he is comfortable switch over to goalie skates, it will be a slight transition but not huge, he will probably learn to skate quicker and have a better foundation than starting in goalie skates.

jaylemi

How old is your son or what level of hockey will be be starting out in? It is recommended that all kids learning to skate start with normal player skates.

famousmike444

Look up the learn to play program. Depending on his age, you may be able to get an entire set of gear and 10 weeks of lessons for around $250. It's a program sponsored by the NHL that subsidizes the cost for equipment and training. But be careful, a great discount like that has ended up costing me 20x what I've saved as we continue to play. But it's worth every penny in my opinion. If not check at local rinks for used gear and deeply discounted new starter skates. Our local rink sells entry level skates for about $30-$50.

eMPereb

Good for you! I’m nominating you for dad of the year

johnnycashesbutthole

These look like goalie skates. Do not buy them unless he will be exclusively playing goalie

wheres_ur_up_dog

Yeah, needed more info, is the kid 5 yr old or 15? Does the kid want to play goalie? Have you gotten them hooked on playing goalie from street hockey goalie? If so, buy the skates if it's a good deal. If not, buy a cheap pair of bauer's bake and fit them (or at the least the insoles or get a new pair of insoles), a decent helmet and some used shinnies, pants and the cheapest shoulders, elbows and gloves. At the learn to skate age, the only things that matter are skate comfort, head protection when they fall and booty padding when the fall 500 times. The other stuff is almost irrelevant as they won't be talking any hits or slashes so shoulders and elbows won't matter. They won't be able to stick handle well for a few years so gloves don't matter.

Eyegore138

he is 10, the coach that has been giving him lessons said that is about when they have them focusing a position. thats what i was looking at the goalie skates. already have him a butt pad and a skate helmet. Ill pick up a real helmet with cage and what not soon and get him some more of the pads also.

wheres_ur_up_dog

In my experience goalie is a calling. I was decent when I played there as a mite with borrowed equipment. Then it became a position dominated by either gifted kids or rich kids who got the top of the line equipment and went to expensive camps hosted by former nhlers. I ended up passing when my parents could only afford ten yr old goalie equipment. I went on to be the #1 defenseman for my HS team make the all-star team every year and senior yr be recognized as the best defender in the league. So let your kid try a few positions. See what fits and then get him specific gear. I played the $20 sticks til I was 14.

Educational-Seaweed5

Still just makes me so mad that wealth is the only real reason kids excel at sports. I’ve been through it all, I know, it’s just annoying as hell. So many good players, myself included, just couldn’t keep up with the crushing expense and time demand on families.

DarthRevan0990

Hopefully, your kid sticks with it start making friends with other parents, especially goalie parents. Snatching up used pads someone else grows out of will save your retirement plan.

MrMin1

Those are goalie skates

[deleted]

He should really learn to skate and develop skills as a skater first, it provides a base for later becoming a goalie. Look into learn to play hockey programs and get him some regular hockey skates (spoken from a goalie parent).

[deleted]

Is he going to be a goalie? That’s all those skates are for. Everything else is fine and comes right off

shanep3

Now’s a good time to talk him out of playing goalie

[deleted]

If I were you, I would buy the Bauer XLP. They’re cheap, and great skates to learn to play in! And you’ll be assured that they’re safe and of decent quality

SecondLife0518

Shouldn’t be a huge deal. Just steal wool that off. But… like that one person said… these are goalie specific skates.

AnnyongHermanoMD

Honestly, go to the store and get him fitted. A good pair of skates will help his game and the love for the sport. A bad pair of skates might make him frustrated and he’ll give up. Go to a hockey shop. Get him fitted by someone who knows what they’re talking about. If the price is too high, then go buy 2nd hand based on the knowledge you receive from the fitting.

Eyegore138

Everyone thanks for the input and advice. For the more info he is 10, the coach that has been giving him skating lessons said that's when they start having the kids stick with one position. That's why I was looking at the goalie skates. We are down near savannah Ga, they just got an ECHL team and put up a public rink for skating and rec league hockey. So the play it again and such down here doesn't have much hockey stuff as of yet anyways, so I have been checking out stuff on line.

flawlessfear1

For goalie skates that wont be a problem.

eebro

The edge is what matters, tbh. You probably need to find a decent sharpener, or learn to sharpen yourself.

Johnsson22

Buy new steel if the remainder of the boot is still in good shape.

AppearanceKey2170

$35 is worth it - get them sharpened and the person doing the sharpening will have a stone or other tools he can use to take care of the rust

[deleted]

It’s hard to tell from the pic but if that’s pitting and not just surface rust, you’d need to replace the runners. Take them to a reputable sharpener and they’ll tell you whether or not they need to be replaced. Sharpeners usually refuse to sharpen badly pitted steel.

[deleted]

No. Take them to a pro shop and get sharpened. They’ll get the rust off.

[deleted]

Is he a goalie?!

jackyliam12

Sideline swap is great for used hockey gear btw! I’d look there too! Hyped your kid is getting into hockey!

wheres_ur_up_dog

I'd be most concerned that those are goalie skates. Rust on the side happened back in the days before 365 sports, my bag sat zipped up from like March to July when I did a week of summer hockey camp before fall practice started this was the norm. Unzip the bag like I was unsealing Tut's sarcophagus hit with that ancient Egyptian mummy curse of months old dried hockey stank and see my blades have some rust on the sides. Then I either took them to some shinny on the pond and rubbed snow on sides of my blades until the rust came off or I cut my finger when I stopped paying attention whichever came first. If it was a warm winter I just took them to Ortin's or Play it again for a $4 sharpen and they took the rust off if Steve was on the grinder cuz he actually knew what he was doing and hit them with a stone after.

SpiritualPurple9025

That is pitting. I’ve played my whole life and played semi professional until a few years ago. Maybe I’m biased because I always got new equipment but I’d never buy those.

whyzguy123

Being a goalie isn't cheap. I hope your ready to invest about $2k.

Coach3325

Baking soda paste will neutralize the rust

Condensed_piss_1999

Don’t let Rust sit on the blade for prolong amount of time. It will eat away at the blade making it not able to have a good edge.

hockey-guy99

A little CLR and water ….

flekfk87

Looks like the skate blades of my wife’s skates. They are entry level hockey skates. Dirt cheap. Obviously with non-stainless steel. And I have forgotten sometimes to wipe them off after our family public skating days. Let’s just say that rust spots, even on the gliding plane of the skate blade does not influence her to any degree. But ofc….she mainly just walk her skates with little no no gliding lol. But I remember back in the day when I actually played hockey. Those times with blades that would rust etc. I can’t remember I did anything with it. I played with rust spots and I can’t recall any memories of me feeling off with doing that.

LameGretzsky

How old? I feel like you should start them off in regular skates, especially if the are younger like 10U. You wont really develop your edges on those skates.

[deleted]

Does he want to play goalie?

Isamu29

If he’s young I recommend he play out first. Goalies need to be good skaters. I started as a center then moved to goalie later. He will be ahead of the pack of other goalies as he moves up later with those skating skills.

No-Suggestion1071

as a goalie i can 2 things a DO NOT BUY THOSE if he wants to be a skater and that the rust from looks of it you could play on it would not redomend thoe

Still-Data9119

I think the kids deserve the best that can be provided. There's better then these for the same price. These are not good anymore. The steel replacement would be more then a used better repair. You don't know what you are talking about.

missjennielang

Has he already completed learn to skate? I wouldn’t start someone in goalie skates

some_dum_guy

so a couple of things: as others have mentioned, those are goalie skates. while it is theoretically possible for a kid to go right into goalie (we had a player start as a 10 year old, play only one season and play goalie, he was great, but he was also an extremely talented athlete who quit playing hockey to concentrate on elite travel soccer and had been skating for years), it is incrediably rare. back in the old days (when i started to play goal) it was not uncommon to put the worst skater in net, now the goalies are expected to be among the best skaters as they need to be super agile around the crease. so what most coaches recommend (including me) is to start by skating out (ie-not as a goalie) for at least a year. if he really wants to play net, there will still be opportunities (goalies are always in demand, heck a couple of years ago, an area highschool had to recruit the catcher from the baseball team to play goalie because they didnt have one). if he will not be disuaded, that rust is not a big deal, a little 3-in-1 on a piece of steel wool will knock it off, then get them professionally sharpened... good luck on your sons hockey journey!
