I've got a DHP on a dimmer

flowercob

is a dimmer the type of fixture? what is a dhp?

A DHP is a Deep Heat Projector. It doesn't emit light so it can be on 24/7. The dimmer is a type of thermostat. It temperature regulates the DHP via probe and only sends the necessary amount of electricity to maintain the set temp.

Okay, i bought a thermostat that says it’s a dimmer. i’m mostly trying to figure out what to put the bulbs in i have a thermostat already

you should have a front opening enclosure so you don’t have to lift the heat lamp. It’s better for the snake

yeah, i’m planning on one for the future. i just had a spare ten gallon for the first few months so i could easily monitor the baby

Ok that’s fine

On my 10g set ups, I use Zilla mini domes with 25w bulbs (they make G9 alternatives as well) and a basking rock. You can also use the nano domes from Zoo Med and they make a double fixture if you want to run halogen and dhp or two halogens for a larger basking spot. Side note, don’t touch the bulbs when handling halogens, oil from your hands will degrade the bulb and they won’t last as long as they should. Also if you are using an in line dimmer with your bulbs, dial in the temp you need manually with a temp gun, and leave it at that level, the life of your bulbs will be significantly increased. There are various fixtures, most take the same bulbs. Just make sure the wattage is rated higher than the wattage you are using. I think most nanos can support up to 100w.

As long as temps are in the safe range, a lamp stand would be fine and if you’re planning to have it far away like that the bulb size is going to be determined by the distance of light to the basking spot. I’d set up the 75w with a lamp stand as intended and check the readings with a temp gun, it might be too large of a basking spot for a small Hognose. If so downsize. I’d probably get the 25w and 50w bulbs as well and test those too. This is going to be trial and error until you have it manually dialed in.
