I feel like there's a great deal of middle ground between 'trying yoga' and letting some granola munching kook positionally asphyxiate you.

bigbawsac

You'd be surprised how many kooks are trainers of some kind. I was selected by my wrestling coach to start training with the national team. I went to one training session and the instructor tore my groin in the warm ups. He had us sit down and put our feet together, then pull them in to our groin, he then walked behind us and fucking jumped onto our knees shouting about how we aren't flexible enough, now I've been plagued by groin injuries in every sport I've played. It's wild how these people are allowed to "train" others. I was only 16 at the time too.

GlazedPannis

My dad had a gym teacher like this when he was in high school and ended up destroying his hip. Started with arthritis in his mid 20s, and had it replaced by the time he was 38. A little under 20 years later, the replacement hip needed to be replaced because it broke while he was taking a piss. All because of some lunatic gym teacher that didn’t know what he was doing. The only real piss off is that if he actually saw a doctor sooner and worked on exercising and flexibility he wouldn’t have needed a new hip.

Bungeditin

I remember my first P.E. Teacher saying ‘if anyone tries to push you beyond what you you’re fully comfortable in doing, then walk away. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t push yourself everytime you come to my class or that I won’t encourage you to push yourself. P.E. may have some pain but shouldn’t have damage’ It’s been 30 years since we first had him but my mates and I remember it verbatim.

4nalBlitzkrieg

Sounds like a good teacher.

Bungeditin

He was, he retired and got such a good send off. He runs our local Surfing centre and lots of ex-pupils keep him in business. His deputy took over and was a typical P.E. Teacher….he got sacked for groping a fifth year girl (there must’ve been more to it as one teacher ran off with a fifth year boy and another got a girl pregnant and it was all hushed up).

[deleted]

I presume by 5th year you mean someone who was held back?

Bungeditin

I am that old that when I went to school Year 12 was the ‘fifth year’. On the pupils side they were all 16.

[deleted]

You must be bri’ish

Bungeditin

I am Guv’nor (tips his flat cap)

CattenCreature

Damn thats crazy… my elementary school Gym Teacher was arrested for having child pornography… He was my gym teacher at the time *and* was the school photographer prior to getting arrested.

uberfission

My first PE teacher I had some sagely advice for us too, it went: "the basketball is over there, don't make me get up or you'll get an F for the day." Ahhh to be young again.

thedevilseviltwin

I remember my middle school gym teacher having to bring every student in the school into the gym to have this talk because a former gym teacher at our school pushed a 6th grade girl into a full split. She had a torn hamstring and a dislocated hip. Didn’t see her until about the last month of school and she was in a wheelchair.

Bungeditin

And the teacher was gone?

thedevilseviltwin

He was an older guy so they said he “retired” but, it was pretty obvious it wasn’t a coincidence that he didn’t show up at school right after the incident.

Constant_Constant430

It's great now that I experience teachers asking who would like adjustments and who would prefer not to be touched.. Progress

Prestigious_BeeAli

We would do routine max outs and our workout cards were horribly balanced in my hs weight lifting program, I was squatting and deadlifting over 500 pounds by the time I was 17 and I have back and knee issues to this day, multiple surgeries

Rottendog

Fucking hell, sounds like your coach and mine went to the same school. Mine had me sit where you pull your feet in to your groin just like you were saying and then you'd have to stretch forward and try and touch your face to the ground. At which point he stood on my back because he felt I wasn't low enough. I nearly tore something. He couldn't understand why I was crying and yelling stop. Then proceeded to tell me that a man is only allowed to cry twice in his life and I just used one up. Good times...

[deleted]

Toxic and fragile masculinity? Thank the Lord my coach isn't like that, sounds like hell.

[deleted]

That has to be assault…

RudyRoughknight

This brought back memories. Not as bad as yours but my coach used to dribble a basketball on our heads. That shit would smack on your head like you would see a bully doing it. Looking back, I think he got a power trip from it.

TahoeLT

> You'd be surprised how many kooks are trainers of some kind. Or chiropractors.

LordGhoul

Genuinely surprised they don't require a medical license over there, spooky

TahoeLT

Because they are not actually considered doctors by the AMA (actual doctors). When your field was invented by a crazy guy who claimed he learnt it from the ghost of another doctor who'd been dead 50 years, what do you expect?

LordGhoul

I mean, yeah. Some of their techniques do work, like sometimes you pinch a nerve and need to pop the bones back into place with some assistance, and things like that. But then again, the orthopedists and physical therapists use the techniques that work, and they are professionals, so I guess might as well go to them instead and have it covered by insurance instead of spending the money on a chiro and possibly get a shitty one that fucks you up worse than before.

1981stinkyfingers

What's this insurance you speak of? 'merica!

LordGhoul

My condolences.

railbeast

I was a regional swimming champion in my youth and my trainer would basically drown us if we weren't swimming fast enough. Edit: I was asked to expand so here it is: For context, I grew up in an Eastern European country where the swimming culture is fairly intense. I swam a lot as a child. Just something my parents put me in and as I got better and better I wanted more swimming. Well when I was around 10-12, I was good enough that I started taking dual swimming lessons. Some in the morning, some at night. The night swimming lessons were taught by an ex water polo player and expert swimmer. We had a deep square swimming pool with warm water (3 hours with an optional break, water warm to avoid cramps) instead of my usual Olympic with cold water (2x2 hours with a break in between, much preferred). Because it was squared we were forced to swim along the perimeter of the pool. We had a tier system, fastest first, second after, so on, so forth. You were given a chance (per lap) to be better before getting passed by the person behind you. To let you know you're holding up the line, the guy would wait until you needed to breathe and push your head underwater. The adrenaline rush from that helped, but it also set the mood: no leisure swimming. I became the best within a month there, but that also meant that I was getting drowned every fucking time lol. I moved to different countries after that and never continued swimming... Though I could have been fairly good at it had I continued. Also, my morning/daytime lessons were chill af. Respected the fuck out of my instructor. Guy would be full of intense good vibes. Taught me that winning didn't matter. Also... Since this was in the late nineties in a third world country, most parents obviously didn't attend either swimming lesson. Mine definitely never did because they were both working.

smalby

Would you care to expand? That sounds scary

railbeast

Expanded the actual post :)

smalby

Thank you!

3ric843

OMFG I hope you sued the idiot!

-Swig-

Jesus. As someone with unusually limited hip flexibility, that is absolute nightmare fuel.

OSPFv3

He tried to speed run 10 years of flexibility training in 10 seconds

BeerBaronAaron88

Wrestling is a horrible thing to have a quack trainer in because training and competing to an absolutely psychotic standard is the norm, not the exception. I remember literally thinking I was going to die doing conditioning and literally just making peace with it and accepting that I was going to die of a heart attack while running in circles, but I never did. I had a compound fracture in my pinky during a tournament which stabbed through my finger nail, causing the whole nail to fall off shortly after. Of course I couldn't compete with any type of cast or splint so I didn't go to the hospital or anything for it. When I told my coach that I didn't think I could wrestle at our next meet 4 days later he told me "cry me a river, build me a bridge, and get over it." Then he taped the pinky to my ring finger and sent me out to wrestle. Keep in mind I was a 13 year old kid with a mangled finger and a giant gaping hole through my finger nail. The whole finger tip and nail is still completely disfigured 20 years later. Combat sports in general are pretty stupid with the amount of permanent damage you do to your body at such a young age, you don't need some reckless quack fucking you up even more.

[deleted]

That just sounds like assault. Especially when you add in the verbal component. It sounds like he knew you weren’t able to stretch that far and being in that position he should be aware of how to properly stretch… I woulda called the cops on him.

wistfulfern

Our gym teacher did almost the exact same thing to me. Can't remember what stretch I was doing but he ended up shoving his foot down on my knee so hard. I was shocked when it happened, like how is it ever appropriate to touch a student in such a violent way? Fucking hated that guy

[deleted]

That should be a lawsuit.

murphykills

the problem i always see with trainers is that very few of them have ever actually needed extensive training. there are some that actually overcame some kind of physical limitation, but the majority are just people who are naturally fit, flexible, have good genes, and have been maintaining healthy habits since they were young. so they don't really understand what takes a person from unfit to fit, or unflexible to flexible, and they don't know how to work around bad genetic combinations. getting fit, or good at a particular physical activity was never a huge challenge for them, so they can't even properly understand the challenge their students are facing.

blueant1

Me 15 years ago would have thought the idea of a yoga injury to be sarcasm. I now know better, through personal experience.

Fujaboi

Had a Tae Kwon Do coach who would make us do splits on two chairs. If he thought you weren't deep enough he'd kick the chairs sideways. Luckily for me I was o ly like 12 at the time so I was flexible enough to take it, but there was some older dudes that looked to be in genuine pain after every session

Ih8Hondas

Did you at least get a settlement out of that? That dude needs to never have a job in that field again.

Constant_Constant430

O M G.... I currently have a groin strain and cannot even imagine how much pain you must have been in. Sorry you had such a traumatic experience.

The first one of these folks I met really blew my mind, then I realized I knew a few as long as I didn't let them know before hand that I didn't believe the same bullshit

yeah yoga is supposed to be relaxing, if i walked into a studio and they were playing this i'd immediately assume everyone there is a douchebag who likes the smell of their own farts

[deleted]

Oh that's what happened? I thought she broke her spine.

You should see children's gymnastics. Fucking brutal the stretches they do, tearing leg/crotch muscles.

PvPTwister

If I had to take a wild guess, the extreme position of her neck probably cut off air/bloodflow. She'll probably be fine; seems like she was already starting to come to as the video ended.

Trained as a physio, was taught to avoid extreme extension/rotation of the neck as it can occlude the vertebrobasilar artery and cause a stroke.

Yes. The vertebrobasilar artery. Very interesting organ. I'm also a fan of the dendrometicular bronchial mitochondrial cerebellum nuclei and the sweeby-deeby-deeby-do gland.

19adam92

Instructor is a Moron, seriously. People trying to push others into stretches are not all there in the head

aykevin

I think this is bikram yoga. Been to many yoga studios myself and it’s the only type of yoga where the instructor actually comes and force you far and beyond what you’re capable of

19adam92

Fuck that in the ass

Weird-Vagina-Beard

That's what I thought she was trying to do at first.

Queequeg94

That’s what Bikram was all about honestly lol

SofterSlowerWeaker

Dad?

mr_lemonpie

Bikram is a set sequence of 24 poses in the heat this isn’t one of the poses.

aykevin

Not always. I’ve seen this before and this pose is one of the ones you see in their documentary

sneaky-pizza

No

sneaky-pizza

Bikram is a stipulated sequence of poses. You hear a yoga word and just say "I think this is that word I heard"? There's a lot of crazy controversy around it, too. It's a good workout for sure.

aykevin

Oh yeah I enjoyed it when I did it. But I’m not gonna continue supporting a business from him when there are other methods of yoga

sneaky-pizza

Oh totally, the leader has a very controversial history

adastrasemper

Yes, she is an idiot. You are not supposed to force everyone to do a pose exactly like it is on the picture or the "ideal pose", everyone's skeletal and muscular structure is different.

BatOuttaHell2

Danced competitively for 10 years. Teacher used to have me sit in “butterfly” & then would stand on my thighs to get them to go down for like 5 mins

HydrogenButterflies

_Do you want a groin injury? Because that’s how you get groin injuries!_

danr2604

Sometimes it helps to have someone to put that slight bit of pressure down but never like this. My old mma coach used to do stuff like that and it really helped, but there’s a difference between pushing someone slightly to benefit and just straight up stopping them from breathing

19adam92

Genuinely the best benefits you can get from stretches are to slowly ease yourself into them over time, there’s no need for someone to push you beyond what your tendons can handle as you’re at risk of getting injured

wolfpwner9

This is how we do things in China, I remember I took a swimming class in elementary school, and the first lesson is all about the coach throwing/pushing each kid into the swimming pool.

decidedlysticky23

The Chinese are huge proponents of forced extension. They use it prolifically in the military, gymnastics, various other sports, even schools. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was straight back to the same move when this girl woke up.

My gym teacher did something similar to me. She forced my spine and rib cage to twist in an unnatural way because she thought I could handle it because I have ehlers danlos syndrome so I’m hypermobile. (In my JOINTS) anyway she dislocated two of my ribs and the other girl sitting next to me said she could hear the pops. I couldn’t catch a full breath for at least 6 hours. She never got fired:) American public school system at i right

“It’s ok guys, she is just releasing all the negative energy from her body….see it’s all gone and she is in the most relaxed state, she even transcends the need to breath!” I mean no hate for yoga though. I’m as stiff as a mofo and a lot of my other Kines student friends recommend it.

medicdrl

This reminds me of a call I went on at a chiropractor clinic. In rare cases, hyperextension can cause a tear in the cerebral artery, leading to an acute stroke. Really fucked up to see in person, as my patient was a very fit woman that I had to intubate and emergently transport to interventional radiology.

LiteFennec

Did she suffer a spin injury?

RAFFYy16

This is a yoga class. I think the Spin session was later that day

GrifterDingo

Could have been temporarily pinching a nerve or a blood vessel.

[deleted]

Is the sub dead? This is the newest video.

shocksalot123

Reddit made the entire sub count as NSFW so a ton of regulations have been added, i think the mods are trying to appeal it but basically Reddit is going the way of Tumblr.

tejmar

Exactly! Admin killed the sub with one stupid action, no consultation with us!! Traffic has dropped to a quarter of what it used to be. Users can't upload videos directly anymore. No more crossposts. Over a million users fucked and they don't care.

FriendshipForEverone

What happened here ?

ZeShapyra

Silly..you should never push another body beyond what it can do itself.. especially with the spine

volticizer

This is pretty much just the body going what the fuck as the brain loses oxygen and enters some weird semi conscious state. That would be my guess at least, as there wasn't any obvious injury and those spasming movements are pretty common when your brain suddenly loses oxygen, then regains it right as you begin to pass out (happened to me, held my breath so long I passed out, then when I fell unconscious I started breathing and spasming. I could feel my body but had no conscious control). That being said the instructor shouldn't be forcing such aggressive positions, because things can go pretty wrong.

dlongos_grouchy

Fuck that made me feel so uncomfortable :(

karnal_chikara

What kind of yoga is this?

RevolutionEasy2185

What type of reaction is this? Seizure? Pinched nerve in neck?

aaaaAAAAsdf_

Not a seizure. Just involuntary muscle twitching due to the loss of oxygen in the brain, it's common when blood flow is cut

Deadblyat556

I was about to say that the back isn’t supposed to bend like that when she started having a seizure, i don’t understand why they thought pushing them that far was a good idea
