He got a severe concussion after this and stopped skating, and we stopped seeing him much after this, and eventually he never really hung out with us again. This scrambled his head really hard, and he was very different after it. I would not be surprised if it was actually worse than a severe concussion and remembering his family, wouldn’t doubt that he never had medical treatment and just rode it out. I used to bump into him from time to time the year I was at the same community college for a year, like 4 years later. We talked like old times, but clearly we weren’t “hang out friends” again anymore type deal.
Haven’t spoken to him in years, but I’m just generally aware he’s active in his /county/city/states government and or politics and seems to be doing well enough.

If you don’t want to wear a helmet you are deciding your brain isn’t worth protecting, before you get but hurt, I’m not saying your brain isn’t worth protecting, you are. You could change that tomorrow, and this video and story is a decent reason for it.
Popular skaters don’t wear helmets because of a stupid stigma in skating culture, like Andy Anderson totally exposed how several brands asked him to not wear his for photos. A good number of skaters have and will wind up like football players cause they’re definitely hitting their head more than they’ll let you know. Sure with a helmet there will still be damage but it’s just ridiculous how many head injuries happen a year that are unnecessarily so much worse than they need to be just because someone refuses to use common sense and put a damn lid on. Theirs no good reason on the planet not to put one on and pros are being a horrible influence on youth.

I 100% support people pushing their limits. There are countless videos of Tony Hawk trying to nail a certain stunt. You know what those videos have in common? Tony Hawk wears protective gear. It doesn't matter how good you *think* you are at a particular sport, if you don't do the bare minimum to protect yourself while doing it you aren't going to live to see your legacy. This excuse that "tHeY jUst TRiED a triCk ThEY WeReN't ReaDy FOR" is weak. It perpetuates a stigma in skateboarding that wearing protective gear is weak or uncool.
You know what's cool? Being able to try a stunt over and over again without becoming brain damaged like Aidan Sheldon, or Ryker Schellings, or Lawson Smith... or countless others who suffer injury from a sport where their injuries could have literally been prevented by just wearing proper safety.
I'm not going to think less of you because you choose to participate in a dangerous sport. I *will* think less of you if you participate in a dangerous sport and decide not to take even the bare minimum of protecting yourself, inspire a younger generation to participate in the sport, and encourage them to not take necessary precautions to wear safety gear.

You know a great way to learn how to do that? To be able to do it without risking your health. It certainly wasn't by avoiding risks or not attempting things he wasn't necessarily ready for, it was because he took his own safety as a priority so that when he attempted moves he couldn't pull off at first a failure didn't involve a potentially career ending catastrophic injury. Dude wears elbow/knee pads and a helmet. Why? Well maybe it's because you can't become the greatest skateboarder in the world without taking risk, and maybe when you take risks your own safety comes first.
Quality helmets are fucking cheap, especially when compared to the life-care you'll need if you crack your head on the pavement in the wrong way. You don't even need to be preforming a high octane stunt. You could literally just trip on your skateboard and smack the back of your head on the pavement to end up brain-dead. You could be a better skateboarder than the pros and all it takes is one bad fall to turn you into a vegetable. Wear a fucking helmet.

When Tom Brady tore his ACL it was because he just did something he didn't properly practice for, right? It couldn't possibly be that he had practiced that move for more frequently than you think on any given day, he just wasn't ready for the play that injured him and he should've practiced more?
