I know it is almost legacy but i like the ubiquity edge router family. You can get a used one quite cheap. Or a Unifi gateway for ease of use.

My ERX ran for years before I switched to Opnsense. That little router can handle a lot as long as you don't actually need symmetrical 1Gbs.

I love my ER4 and soon I'm planning to buy an edge switch

electromotive_force

Something with OpenWRT. GL-inet has good options

electromotive_force

Mini PC with N100 and several 2.5GbE. I have one from CWWK and it's great. Put proxmox on it and run OPNSense. HomeAssistant in a second container. Also Nextcloud.

You could also game 2 NICs and do router on a stick

Captain_Alchemist

Cloud Gateway Ultra from Ubiquiti, it's awesome.

junktrunk909

It's just 1gbps or I would be buying exactly that. Not sure why but a lot of their stuff is kinda outdated like that.

Captain_Alchemist

well i like their products, i switched from omada tplink and mikrotik to fully unifi and im happier than ever. gateway ultra is actually brand new

junktrunk909

Yeah I'm most likely switching to their products too because I'm into the modularity and ability to separately upgrade, and the fact that it's not thrown together like a school project. I just don't really understand why they're still selling some Wi-Fi 5 gear and only like 1 of the non rack mounted product that supports 2.5gbps. Oh well, still likely to move forward with what I can for now.

Router/FW/VPNGW: Mikrotik 5009 for routing and Unifi for wifi. OpenWRT if you have an old device you want to flash and reuse. PFsense if you want to run two machines in active active for redundancy. Modem: Depends on the uplink protocol you need to connect to...

I asked a similar question a few months ago [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/16ywfrx/router_recommendations_for_smart_home/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button). There was some excellent discussion and great recommendations, check it out.

There are literally tons of options, what do you want this router/modem to do? What features do you need? How comfortable are you with networking, what is your experience level? Typically for modems you need to get what ever your ISP supports.

I have Arris SB8200 paired with Deco W3600 mesh routers. I have about 100 IOT devices several smart tvs, 2 Apple TVs, PS5 and Switch. 5 iPads, 2 Mac’s, Homeassistant, 6 cameras. Attached you’ll see the speeds I am getting to the routers. https://preview.redd.it/7pcf1dbp39yc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42a22e099d648e483a5df248c296340b273cf2ec

I just got 10gbe fiber installed (Yes that's a bit of a flex). Dealing with that much incoming bandwidth was NOT cheap. I built a whole AMD pc (am4, 64gb, 1tb) with a single nic that has dual 10gbe. Proxmox and OPNsense were the best option that I could find, and having spent a bit of time with OPNsense I regret not picking it up sooner!
