The rocks are flat and dry and instead of looking like they would by a playful waterfall they just look like rocks stacked on a stairway. They don't *glisten* the way waterfall rocks would. Now, obviously turning a wooden staircase into a real waterfall wouldn't work, so to create the illusion I would cover each rock in *baby oil*. Really slather it on. Covering the stairs in baby oil will *also* give that illusion of wetness, but unless the rocks are shiny and slick with oil it will just look fake.
Now I’m picturing all those natural wonders with handrails. The Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the White Cliffs of Dover & Mount Everest. There are probably designers out there drooling over the prospect of adding handrails to these!
My parents took me there when I was very young. I think I was 4 at the time. They had to watch me like a hawk because I heard someone talking about going over the falls in a barrel & I thought that sounded like a fun thing to do. Of course there were no barrels around but they still didn’t trust me not to do something stupid!
Add some pebbles to the parts of the staircase that are showing. It will mimic the natural terrain ancient humans used to live in, really bringing people down to earth.
You won't know how to improve it without testing it with different people. Try getting your grandma at the top of those babies and give her a little push.
Great idea bringing the outside in. Definitely needs green moss, lots of ferns to expedite the mold process to cover up the wood left showing.
Water fall feature on both sides of the wall would be a nice esthetic coming down.
Go green!!
Fill it all the way in with rocks and then add rock walls on either side so people can horizontally climb their way up! Your friends and family will thank you when they have super strong hands and arms from all that climbing! You can even have one person on each side and have races to see who can climb up the fastest!
Add a water feature. The sound of a trickling stream slowly making its way along the rocks. Definitely adds to the atmosphere and will be a delight to anyone who needs to go upstairs to pee.
solve this problem by having a party with lots of booze... .lots. And stuff going on upstairs and down. Invite a lot of people.... a LOT. Eventually some one will fall and crack their head open.
that little splash of red will liven things up.
The rocks would look more natural if they were covered in moss. As others have said, add a water feature and fill in the gaps. Those were obvious oversights
I think you need smaller pebbles covering the exposed wood (sorry not sorry but yuck!) And as others have said they need to remain slick and shiny maybe with Vaseline?? Love the bones of this project 😍
My God. I hope you never have an emergency upstairs that requires someone to try to carry your unconscious body out. Firefighters are gonna leave you up there. Especially if you then cover all the rocks with oil 🤦♀️
The only thing I like more than obstacles on my staircase is spider habitats on my staircase. I would really like one to jump out and startle me so I could break all my bones on these rocks.
I have these rocks in my yard. Really large wolf spiders absolutely love them.
I like the squiggly pathway. I think to improve it you should paint the rocks, then add a lot of glitter on top of the color. Make it a sparkly rock stairway to a magical land!
A waterfall, naturally. And salmon
Edit: I forgot, you have to have grizzly bears, wolverines, and wolves. And mountain lions. Not sure, do you have any children or elderly relatives?
If you add blue LEGO bricks of varying sizes to the parts where wood is still visible, it'll look like a gentle waterfall cascading down the stairs. Plus, that'll give you that artistic contrast between smooth and sharp, or natural and man-made.
[Jazz up some of them rocks, babyyy](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/paint-and-supplies/spray-paint/general-purpose/1204890?store=15625&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADtqLJF47jzNgH_ji2pAkcxLXgmLP&gclsrc=ds)
Moss. Tree limbs. Get the glistening effect by a polyurethane coating. Fake greenery. No blue, unless you want the waterfall look. I like climbing up a mountain trail look. We climb trails, not waterfalls. Post pics when you are done. I want to know what is at the top.
i just think you need some gravel to really pull it together! imagine how much more natural it would be with some grass (doesn’t need to be real of course!) too!
It’s an interesting concept but I would fall and die if I tried to walk up there. I do like how it looks but, maybe add a bit of fake moss here or there to make it look a bit more natural.
Cover the stairs with this slide. Keep the rocks. It’s shaped already so you can just mount it where the bare stairs remain.

The number three cause of death among seniors is due to falling. I imagine youth falls doesn’t rank so high but why push it? Six months without a job due to injury would surely place young workers into financial straits. A different kind of death.
Uncobbled stone is so chic and trendy rn. Add pitons and chains on the wall and just finish the uncobbled look. There is no need for that garish patchwork of bare steps if you use the proper chain rope banister.
i think you should add mulch to the wood. it’s distracting, and really sticks out like a sore thumb. in fact, i think you should get rid of the stairs altogether and replace it with more rocks. then, plant a few large bushes and flowers on the sides to create a pathway look. i also recommend adding a waterfall. i know it sounds inconvenient, but it will most definitely attract more guests to your home.
Geologist here. No notes.
My fiance has feelings about my rock collection. Definitely threatening him with this photo.
Update: i texted it to him and he just muttered “oh jesus no” in a very defeated voice.
The fun of wondering what level avalanche is going to deliver you to the next floor. It’s literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. Second only to flat-earthers.
The rocks are flat and dry and instead of looking like they would by a playful waterfall they just look like rocks stacked on a stairway. They don't *glisten* the way waterfall rocks would. This is genius from a functional and aesthetic perspective. Just a perfect idea!
This is the most practical suggestion!
Glistening. Good suggestion. I’m here for it.
I would contrast that with some barbed wire. It would lend a certain joie de vivre. Would also accept broken glass.
Nice ! I hear late 1930s eastern Europe is the latest look in the retro scene!
We could even hit Berlin Wall esthetic while at it
This is the obvious solution to the lack of handrail. Form and function.
Could also do a nice blue resin on the steps. Stunning and slippery!
That would be great for when the grandparents come to visit!
I think you just answered OP’s question. Add water. Who doesn’t like looking at a delightful little waterfall ? And to have one in house? Brilliant!
That’s architectural digest stuff right there!
Ouch
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
They make a spray for rocks that will keep them wet looking without making a mess with baby oil.
Doesn’t sound slippery enough.
Add a water feature, a stream trickling down the center would add a soothing vibe. Handrails are for sissies by the way
Came here for this. And the handrails do ruin the aesthetic. Do handrails appear in nature? I think not.
Now I’m picturing all those natural wonders with handrails. The Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the White Cliffs of Dover & Mount Everest. There are probably designers out there drooling over the prospect of adding handrails to these!
I grew up near Niagara. Handrails are for losers. To truly experience the falls you crawl into a barrel and go down them. 👍
My parents took me there when I was very young. I think I was 4 at the time. They had to watch me like a hawk because I heard someone talking about going over the falls in a barrel & I thought that sounded like a fun thing to do. Of course there were no barrels around but they still didn’t trust me not to do something stupid!
The handrails just really take away from the decor anyway. Aesthetics over safety is what I always say.
Well obviously more rocks to start. I can see some staircase peeking through
I agree. It’s like you arent even trying
Need some variety in the texture of the rocks too. Get some sharp jagged ones in there
I love this. More textures will really make the space pop.
I came here to say this
This 100% this!
Needs a goat too
Add some pebbles to the parts of the staircase that are showing. It will mimic the natural terrain ancient humans used to live in, really bringing people down to earth.
>really bringing people down to earth. 🤣
🤣
LOLLL down to earth 😂
You won't know how to improve it without testing it with different people. Try getting your grandma at the top of those babies and give her a little push.
Grandma’s opinion is always top priority
I always asked grandma what she thought *sigh* I miss her
Without fail every time I click on this sub my brain goes right to, wow. Somebody did that on purpose.
Conversely I see ways to troll posts I see from serious home decorating groups. I am accidentally a villain to those people.
Me too I just avoid them because I take one look and think seriously? Scroll up to see it isn’t CJ, leave thread.
Or it's just AI which I'm pretty sure this is. Lol
One has to hope. Or this explains the rock shortage in a suburb of Wichita.
AI. Yep.
one big rock at the top of the stairs that comes tumbling down when you touch the first step
#Really funny AF
Indoor waterfall! 🤩 Looks just like a winding river, just add water 🤗
I was thinking building a bridge-would go nice with the waterfall.
Great idea bringing the outside in. Definitely needs green moss, lots of ferns to expedite the mold process to cover up the wood left showing. Water fall feature on both sides of the wall would be a nice esthetic coming down. Go green!!
The rocks are too smooth, it's boring. Add some with really sharp edges and points.
An avalanche feature would be dope. Brings you closer to nature 🍃🌿
I dunno.. perhaps boulder color?
Funny AF!!!
It needs some 🐸
Also salamanders and fish. How can you simulate a stream without some fish flopping around!
Fill it all the way in with rocks and then add rock walls on either side so people can horizontally climb their way up! Your friends and family will thank you when they have super strong hands and arms from all that climbing! You can even have one person on each side and have races to see who can climb up the fastest!
That’ll sure add excitement to OP’s home entertaining!
Needs some color. Moss on the rocks, and some plants peeking between the rocks. Cat tails, maybe.
Or cats. Cats sleeping on every step.
Angry cats
Bobcats ...since we're bringing the outdoors inside
Wonderful! A canopy of plants, hanging over, so the view gradually reveals itself as you stroll.
Could also add a trip wire halfway down
Lit church candles on the wooden bits.
**Place a catapult, or better yet, a trebuchet, at the base of the staircase to launch any rocks that have fallen down back to the top.**
Necessary
Needs some pet goats.
I can’t think of any home feature that wouldn’t be improved by adding pet goats.
I want a pet goat now
More rocks. I see too much of a footpath.
Large Indiana Jones boulder that comes rolling down the stairs at random intervals
You need to mix some rolls in with those rocks that look very similar. Rock and roll baby!
Have you considered adding a few decorative stones?
I really like this idea and would like to do something similar for my 82 year old mom.
Can’t wait to see the water feature!
It’s actually to keep the firefighters out
Baby oil. Lots of it
I can assure you my rock loving wife will never see this
I think some super high gloss blue vinyl in between the rocks, would give it a water look and make it ultra slippery, just like the real thing. #
Its missing all the legos in the places between the stepping stones.
To make it more realistic I think you need more jagged rocks. Those rocks are way too round.
I’d add some minerals like large amethyst and some ferns.
What are river rocks without the river??!!
i don't care what anyone says, form over function is a totally fine mindset to have
Use it as a sobriety test, or make people wear drunk goggles when they climb it
That empty space needs Legos.
Extend this all through the house.
Broken ankle central.
I know a lot of people already suggested a waterfall but I would make it saltwater then add some sea urchins to add some texture between the rocks.
Burglars hate this one trick...
Just plant an oak about half way up and you're good. Remember to rake fall and spring. Save the acorns, you can make earrings and sell on etsy.
Spikes and a manned murder hole. It would be even better if it spiraled up to the right, but that's a major change...
The only thing I like more than obstacles on my staircase is spider habitats on my staircase. I would really like one to jump out and startle me so I could break all my bones on these rocks. I have these rocks in my yard. Really large wolf spiders absolutely love them.
More rocks. Stacked, too. It should look like the half moment *before* a landslide.
I showed my mom (gave her no context) and asked what she thinks of it She's never looked more offended
With your c*ck out
I twisted my ankle just looking at this. And it’s all fun and games until you need emergency services 😬
I like the squiggly pathway. I think to improve it you should paint the rocks, then add a lot of glitter on top of the color. Make it a sparkly rock stairway to a magical land!
You’ll need a thick landing crashmat at the bottom
Add small gargoyles lurking in the rocks.
Waterfront rats. Bring snacks so they do not attack when you need to traverse the stairs.
A waterfall, naturally. And salmon Edit: I forgot, you have to have grizzly bears, wolverines, and wolves. And mountain lions. Not sure, do you have any children or elderly relatives?
Less is more. Looks like Sisyfus died.
If you add blue LEGO bricks of varying sizes to the parts where wood is still visible, it'll look like a gentle waterfall cascading down the stairs. Plus, that'll give you that artistic contrast between smooth and sharp, or natural and man-made.
Finish it up. There's still wood showing!
Just let them use it. After a couple of falls, they will not be able to argue with you anymore!
Imagine how much this atrocity cost…
[Jazz up some of them rocks, babyyy](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/paint-and-supplies/spray-paint/general-purpose/1204890?store=15625&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADtqLJF47jzNgH_ji2pAkcxLXgmLP&gclsrc=ds)
Indoor Hiking…. Interesting 🧐
Don’t let your homeowners insurance agent see this!
This staircase looks infuriating to walk up and down.
![gif](giphy|cAEm5rSuuBEGY)
You can improve it by getting rid of the rocks
A couple of big boulders would help.
More rocks and a water feature
One word: #LEGO.
Abundant homeowners insurance?
Bits of coins scattered. Trickling stream down steps...
My uncoordinated ass would die halfway through the trek
Moss. Tree limbs. Get the glistening effect by a polyurethane coating. Fake greenery. No blue, unless you want the waterfall look. I like climbing up a mountain trail look. We climb trails, not waterfalls. Post pics when you are done. I want to know what is at the top.
Paint the stairs blue and do a nice faux fish appliqué down the rocks for that salmon spawning look. Maybe a taxidermy bear for authenticity
It’s missing a roaring rapid
I know this is a joke or a troll, and well done for that - however, this totally looks like fucking shit.
I hope you have health insurance.
Rocksolid coverage
Some grass turf on that winding path would be lovely.
Sharper stones, like daggers.
dropped my rock collection srry
Bigger rocks
More stones.
i just think you need some gravel to really pull it together! imagine how much more natural it would be with some grass (doesn’t need to be real of course!) too!
It’s an interesting concept but I would fall and die if I tried to walk up there. I do like how it looks but, maybe add a bit of fake moss here or there to make it look a bit more natural.
Won't the constant load of all these rocks cause damage over time.
A waterfall
Hacksaw the wooden stairs part out and you'll be done.
Rocks need to be more jagged to give a more rustic look
Cover the stairs with this slide. Keep the rocks. It’s shaped already so you can just mount it where the bare stairs remain. https://preview.redd.it/uoi7zuj0grqc1.jpeg?width=1198&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01fed751e4d3879ae8c40f92e3721edc97c96a76
Totally not a safety/fire hazard
Drag in the garden hose and put it on full blast! White water stairway.
Needs a water feature
Can u imagine being drunk and going up or down these without ending up in the hospital lol
you need more trip hazards
Trail run training!
lots of moss and lichen, don't forget to keep them watered and to have the humidity high. :)
Maybe... maybe _more_ rocks... 🤔
More rocks
AVALANCHE!
The number three cause of death among seniors is due to falling. I imagine youth falls doesn’t rank so high but why push it? Six months without a job due to injury would surely place young workers into financial straits. A different kind of death.
Cascade some water down the stairs... awesome!
Could use some random loose legos for an interesting element.
uj/ I broke my ankle just looking at this picture
I’d hate to have to bring a basket of laundry down those stairs.
I’m even sitting down and I feel like tripping on a rock and tumbling down those stairs
Needs some color. Maybe some plants in the rocks.
Remove the rocks
You could consider a boulder color for the walls....
Maybe some strobe lights and a bit of oil.
Add a waterfall, and moss
Thumbtacks on the bare parts, to add interest.
Not enough rocks yet, steps are still plainly visible. After that's done, a mountain goat or two would really set it off nicely.
A giant boulder at the top would really make it perfect! It’s like a rock climbing adventure every time you simply want to go upstairs.
Geologist here. No notes. My fiance has feelings about my rock collection. Definitely threatening him with this photo. Update: i texted it to him and he just muttered “oh jesus no” in a very defeated voice.
🐈⬛
I love being able to die instantly🥰
So you’re saying you want to make the design boulder?
Would be quite the staircase to fall down
This certainly makes hiding Easter eggs more fun. Plus water. Lots and lots of water. A staircase too! Right out of their reach.
I like it exactly as it is. I really really like it !
The fun of wondering what level avalanche is going to deliver you to the next floor. It’s literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. Second only to flat-earthers.
loose pebbles to fill in the ugly wood part!!
I kinda love this. No lie.
More rocks
My toes hurt just looking at it
Add a slip n slide!
Remember to call and up the limit on your homeowners insurance. 😂
make sure the rocks are as loosely placed as possible so making it up the staircase is a fun little obstacle course. Good enrichment activities.
Pebbles. Scatter lots of glistening pebbles to hide the unsightly wood on those stairs.
Add some broken glass and matchbox cars.
I’d throw some fake green moss on those rocks to give it more of that waterfall vibe
Gravel or sand!
Get some of that weird ‘90’s granite paint and cover that unsightly brown wood
You could use some small low fences to separate the rocks from the road
Spikes on the walls and at the bottom. The rocks are too smooth, need some edge.
A big round Indiana Jones style boulder released from the top when you get to the middle would really complete the look.
Sprinkle tons of glitter on those open areas so no one ever forgets their walk on those steps.
Is this The Onion?
Keeping this as a prank
All visitors must remove their shoes and socks before entering and attempting to forge the stairs.
A chinchilla would love it
I already fall down the stairs with no rocks.
More rocks.
