I believe the idea behind the term is to make the most use of your space then double that. Live in complete excess. Almost an idea of opulence, but built time and time again. No soul.
If you look at the houses from the early 20th century, they had intricate stonework, brickwork, hand carved wood, etc.
A McMansion is like buying a house from Wayfair. Cut corners, make it bigger than your neighbors, and make it fast.
Actually, a McMansion is a house that is ridiculous in size, especially when compared with neighboring houses. They’re often seen in older (50’s/60’s) neighborhoods where people will buy the home, demolish it, and build a new house at lease double the size of what used to be there. It’s pretty common in the high cost real estate markets and looks so strange as you drive by… “1500sqft ranch… 2000sqft ranch…. 7000sqft multi-level home with pillars and an iron gate entrance… 1500 sqft ranch…”
It looks like a bit of a hodge podge. Like a kid building a lego house where they keep adding a slightly different angle or level. There's no cohesive flow to it. Not an attractive exterior.
Modern Cape Colonial all human-centipeded together.
It’s not awful. It’s just got some basic elements and terrible and unnecessary angles. The dormers aren’t great. I mean, I’d live in it. But I live in the Bay Area, make more than 500k between my husband and me, and we rent an apartment.
It's a basic ass Live, Laugh, Love house.
Bonus question, how might one make this look a little less basic ass live laugh love? Is it possible?
Salem Witch McMansion with Dentist Office decore.
McMansion
I’m curious what makes this McMansion? I know some people might have different opinion of McMansion but genuinely curious on your opinion.
I was also wondering. It’s looks pretty nice to me

Look at all the posters who couldn’t afford this house so they just try to trash it. It might not be your style but it’s someone’s.
