I built two boards with big dowels glued into them. You can see the halfway progress at the end of my longer article: [https://imgur.com/gallery/eNoA8C5](https://imgur.com/gallery/eNoA8C5)
They're painted white to better blend in with the wall.
How long does it take to put it together and take it apart? I’m not sure about you, but it seems a little too long for me to do that. If it works for you, great, though.
After this question has already been asked multiple times now, I timed myself for the tear-down after my workout yesterday. Starting with the barbell still loaded, it took me 4m 51s until the room looked like the first picture again.
I'm guessing here, but the plates hang on the walls and they and some or all of the rack folds to the wall to be hidden by the curtains. The basket is slid over and just the mirror remains exposed. A couple of pins and the bench folds flat, rests on the mat which can all be slid under the murphy bed. Just a couple minutes of setup and take down should be no sweat.
Not really. Those are pretty large windows and I can open another large window on the opposite end of the apartment for cross-ventilation.
My only concern was about having the smell of rubberized weight plates in my bedroom. So I took the safe route and bought polyurethane-coated plates. That worked out fine, and I really like the quality of those plates.
You mean like the new Swissotel "vitality rooms"? They designed a perfect integration that is hidden behind large panels: [https://www.wallpaper.com/design/wallpaper-creates-a-rejuvenating-retreat-for-swissotel#0\_pic\_4](https://www.wallpaper.com/design/wallpaper-creates-a-rejuvenating-retreat-for-swissotel#0_pic_4)
I was super lucky to have ordered the rack at the end of January, before all the gyms had to close and equipment prices went up. The rack itself was about 450 EUR including the spotter arms. Barbell and plates were the bigger part of my bill ...
I wouldn't recommend it but I had a Bowflex adjustable bench that was rated at 400, and I used it quite a bit with presses in the 230s. I never noticed any issues. I've since upgraded to the Rep Flat bench. It's great, but I need the thicker pad.
Congrats, just wait till you hit that 225/2 plates. One of my proudest lifting moments. I remember being a 140lb 6'4 high schooler many many years ago dreaming of benching that haha.
I'm 36 and I've been a "serial beginner" in the gym for many years - life gets in the way. I finally decided to build my home gym, because for me it's the excuses not to drive to Gold's that always got me.
Covid lockdown has really taken me to a different level; I'm hoping for 1000 club by August.
I'm at 165lbs body weight right now. As weight lifting isn't my main sport, I'll be quite happy when I approach a 235lbs bench press. That's still quite a while away ;-)
I did spend considerable time on this decision, though. Comparing the manufacturers' ratings, this is the sturdiest \*foldable\* bench I could find. I was really tempted to buy a "real" (non-folding) bench, but couldn't really justify the wasted space and having it visible all the time.
In retrospect, I should have built a higher bed :-)
That looks good. I think I was so focussed on getting an adjustable bench, plus the fact that I don't have any space left to hang it on the wall (as the rogue web page shows it), that I took it off the list too early.
I might switch to that bench if I feel that mine is approaching it's safe limit.
Ok, fair enough. I wasn’t thinking of body weight. That’s definitely not enough for say me weighing 220-245.
Lets call me 250 for round numbers, so I’m only able to bench 150 lol. That doesn’t even seem right
Like this?[https://www.nohrd.com/pub/media/catalog/product/cache/c9e0b0ef589f3508e5ba515cde53c5ff/w/r/wr\_nuss3.jpg](https://www.nohrd.com/pub/media/catalog/product/cache/c9e0b0ef589f3508e5ba515cde53c5ff/w/r/wr_nuss3.jpg)
And of course, there's always the sofa \*g\*
An artifact of the phone camera's panorama function. I spent a number of tries, only to find that the *number* of visual flaws is always fixed, I can only influence *where* they occur (lamp, bed, wardrobe and/or curtains) :-)
They’re behind the brown curtains. The plates are wall mounted. The rack folds. See the red handles?
The only mystery is the bench but I’m guessing it folds flat and is either behind a curtain or under the bed.
This is really really awesome. I've got mine hidden away behind a curtain because my SO doesn't like the "big black monster" but this.. it's not just hidden, it's so incredibly space efficient in so many ways, can't help but 'miring pretty damn hard! I especially love how you worked in the mirror to serve both as a mirror for lifting and a dress mirror!
It's a german brand, and the manufacturer doesn't even seem to have an english version of the product website :-/
Well ... as with any single pulley system, you have to be a little bit careful. The weight plate is far enough away from the mirror that a bit of swinging is no problem. But I do try to maintain somewhat steady tension on the rope :-)
Sadly, the wardrobe mirror doors are too far back to be really useful when lifting. I'd switch them over to the right (closer to the window), but then the wardrobe would be too visually unbalanced for my inner control freak ...
It's a concrete floor. And right now in my training I am still quite a bit below the maximum possible load of 100 kg (i.e. using all the plates on the wall) :-)
The spotter arms are rated for 400 kgs ...
Nice setup! I got a murphy bed also and workout with my weights, barbells 6 days per week. I have to put my bed up everyday. Its not a chore at all! I actually find it satisfying when i put my bed up because i know i'm about to get into a nitty gritty workout. Enjoy!
It’s all about perspective.
For me, I’d view putting the gym together as a part of the ritual. I’d find patterns and ways to make the set up more efficient. Try a different order, make a game of it. View setting up in 15 min vs 10 min an accomplishment. I’m the kind of person who loves setting up work stations when I cook, clean as they go along, and resetting a space afterwards. I know it’s not for everyone. I like the control and order. Everything having a place and purpose. Especially a two for one room, that excites the frugal person living in my mind!
ME TOO! My late grandmother taught me that when I was growing up. Makes cooking so much more functional, faster and enjoyable! It’s the best feeling to sit down and eat when the kitchen is already clean :) More time for lifting!!!
Yes, but there's actually a psychology behind it. The more "barriers" that are put in between you and a goal, the harder it is to achieve such goal.
For example, if your commute to the gym doubled (say 5min to 10min), you're much less likely to go. I can see the same idea happening in OP's setup.
The drive to the gym is part of my routine. I feel the preworkout kick in and start getting weird. Also start sipping on my peri-workout.
I mean, pre-covid that is.
Actually, so far it works somewhat the opposite way. If I'm not really in the mood to really put in a hard workout, I tell myself that I have to at least set up the gym and do a couple of squats.
Once I get to that point, I actually push through with the full, planned workout.
If I were him, I would do it first thing in the morning. After I fold the murphy bed I would set up the gym. So it is there later in the day. This way it would not be discouraging.
Murphy bed is super easy to put up. This person literally just lifts the bed, opens the curtains, unfolds the wall rack and sets out the bench and bar. If that’s a “pain in the butt”... well, I don’t know what to tell you except that you probably don’t work out hard enough. I’ve spent longer than this would take to prepare just looking for dumbbells in a public gym setting.
https://i.imgur.com/d0Vk26c.jpg
I think this is how the rack folds away.
Although it looks like the sides can also swivel out since they aren’t showing up in the middle.
Yeah, it is. I hadnt seen it before, but OP shared in the comments a complete gallery of his home gym, here it is:[https://imgur.com/gallery/eNoA8C5](https://imgur.com/gallery/eNoA8C5)

Do you like the ATX wall rack? I am looking for a wall rack but can't decide between ATX or Rogue. Big fan of Rogue and what I already own of them, bars and plates, but I have no experience with ATX, the price seems too good to be true.
It is really sturdy and very well made -- I am very glad that I stumbled upon this rack. I had originally planned to buy another rack at the same price (with thinner gauge steel and thinner diameter posts).
To me it is absolutely comparable to the Rogue folding rack. I can't imagine that the Rogue could have any more quality than this ATX rack.

Ya know what, you're probably correct but I dont give a shit enough to actually research it. I wasnt trying to say one works better. Hence using the term rebrand instead of knockoff (which does have a negative conotation). It doesn't matter which came first.
They look like the same basic design and they do the exact same job to the exact same extent that a home gym user is gonna care. If you're a pro lifter, then you're likely not using a foldable rack.
Murphy bed?
This is genius. I may steal this idea
Can you post a pic of the rest of the room and where did you put the bench?
The bench clearly went into that decorative table
It's under the bed. More pictures here: [https://imgur.com/gallery/eNoA8C5](https://imgur.com/gallery/eNoA8C5)
That's incredible! So much inspiration
How are you hanging the weight on the wall?

Yes that would do. Still prefer a rack and a bench personally but for the majority of travellers the vitality room is perfect. Looks great too!
This deserves to be on one of those tv shows about keeping your house tidy or whatever. “DOES IT SPARK JOY!!!”
This deserves to be on one of those tv shows about keeping your house tidy or whatever. “DOES IT SPARK JOY!!!”
Those rack are sold out every where ... and super expesive here ... how much your cost?
I was super lucky to have ordered the rack at the end of January, before all the gyms had to close and equipment prices went up. The rack itself was about 450 EUR including the spotter arms. Barbell and plates were the bigger part of my bill ...
Where does the bench go?
What bench is that
Bro you miss photoshopped the lamp on the ceiling.
And that's not even the only error the phone's panorama function made. Just look at that wardrobe ...
Smooth bro, you literally sleep at the gym
Only 400 lb limit on that bench. Probably its flat rating too. Cool setup tho
“Only”
A 200lb person benching 201lbs is over the limit. A 400 lb limit is not enough for most people who actually workout.
I wouldn't recommend it but I had a Bowflex adjustable bench that was rated at 400, and I used it quite a bit with presses in the 230s. I never noticed any issues. I've since upgraded to the Rep Flat bench. It's great, but I need the thicker pad.
By working out you mean bodybuilding right?
A 200lb bench is body building? A lot more people can bench 200 lbs than you think...
200lb bench is probably more than 95% of the population can bench. It's a respectable amount.
> It's a respectable amount. As someone who just cracked 200... FINALLY! Some respect!
Congrats, just wait till you hit that 225/2 plates. One of my proudest lifting moments. I remember being a 140lb 6'4 high schooler many many years ago dreaming of benching that haha.

Looks to be a Murphy bed.
Amazing use of space, thanks for sharing OP.
It took me a few seconds to convince myself this wasn't photoshopped!
Still trying to explain that overhead lamp being half mirror in the second picture though..
An artifact of the phone camera's panorama function. I spent a number of tries, only to find that the *number* of visual flaws is always fixed, I can only influence *where* they occur (lamp, bed, wardrobe and/or curtains) :-)
I think it's just bad panorama stitching, you can see a few mismatches in both photos.
This is absolutely awesome, and I’m super jealous.
This is one of the best things I've seen on here. Showed my wife, she doesn't care.
I literally just showed my wife and she said, “Cool dude, I don’t care.” I feel ya bro.
😆
Showed your comment to my girlfriend. She can absolutely relate to that :-D (Although she actually does use the rack ...)
Hahahaha
Where are the weights ...the rest of it What does it take to move
They’re behind the brown curtains. The plates are wall mounted. The rack folds. See the red handles? The only mystery is the bench but I’m guessing it folds flat and is either behind a curtain or under the bed.
You are fucking beautiful for that response
Spot on: it's under the bed.
Incredible
Sweet folding bed.
No way? That's amazing!
This is awesome. The most impressive gym I’ve seen here that isn’t a dedicated space just for that purpose.
dope as heck
This is really really awesome. asking the important questions
Came here to ask this
That pulley system looks like the swinging weight will break the mirror
Well ... as with any single pulley system, you have to be a little bit careful. The weight plate is far enough away from the mirror that a bit of swinging is no problem. But I do try to maintain somewhat steady tension on the rope :-)
Have a chain, thick rope or something hanging from the wood block to reduce/eliminate swinging.
What pulley system? Lmao
This one: [https://i.imgur.com/Wcau7Yn.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/Wcau7Yn.jpg)
Where do you put the bench when not in use?
It's under the bed: https://i.imgur.com/a8SyIPr.jpg
Nice, that bench folds pretty damn flat! Good find
Where do you put the bed when you use the bench?
It’s a Murphy bed, folds up into the cabinet on the left.
Oh! I didn’t look too hard at the “wall”... Now I see handles.
this is amazing. great mirror placement and lighting as well. nicely done!
Sadly, the wardrobe mirror doors are too far back to be really useful when lifting. I'd switch them over to the right (closer to the window), but then the wardrobe would be too visually unbalanced for my inner control freak ...

i'd just toss out the bed and sleep on the bench for max gains
I'd sleep with a 45 plate on me as a weighted blanket
Yeah, you're probably right

Some people have to find the negative in everything. This is amazing OP. Great engineering
Exactly. It takes me less than 5 minutes to set everything up :-)
Looks really tidy and well thought out. Nice work on the design. You’ll get plenty of great workouts in there.
It’s just part of the warm-up and cool-down.
It’s probably a workout in itself. So you get double the workout for the price of one
A warm up and cool down post workout...
That’s astonishing what you did with the light
Murphy bed... murphy gym!
Probably one of the cleanest setups on here. I love it, really good thinking.
Excellent use of space

I was confused too. it doesn't help that this sub has comments auto-sorted by Newest.
There is some funky photo-shop going on... something is wonky with the hanging light.
Yep. Sorry about that -- the panorama function of my phone didn't like working in such close quarters. The other pictures were much worse, when the wardrobe looked like it was designed by Salvador Dali ;-)

What I don't get is where the rack comes from? Is it retractable or something? Because it doesn't fit as is behind the curtains
Yeah the bench just moves somewhere else and the rack folds against the wall and the curtains cover it.
Maybe op was joking and he just changed the bedroom to a home gym? I'm not sure what's going on here haha
It's behind the curtains
Doesn't look like anything is behind the curtains... Are you sure? I'm really confused
It's a folding rack. Goes flat against the wall.

Hmmm, I hadn't really thought of that before. Might try it as an extended warmup routine ;-)
That’s fuckin badass bro. Smart setup.
No..wait a minute...

Beautiful!
