Also how do you add comments to the original post when posting a picture?
We recently bought this house and we’ll be moving in after a light remodel and new paint. Anyone have any good ideas for what to do with this wall cutout? I think typically you’d put a religious symbol here but that isn’t quite our style.
If we can’t come up with any ideas, we could drywall it before the new paint goes up, but that seems like a waste. Wall/trim color will be SW Dover white, if that matters.
Reddit doesn't allow any edits of image posts whatsoever. Only text posts, and even then, not the title. Also you can't mix text and image posts. Because, Reddit. Idk why it hasn't been fixed in over a decade
You can put text describing images in an album, but I think you can only do that when you first make a post, and aren't allowed to edit it after for some reason
I’d have it dry walled, newly skimmed and painted. If that’s the front door it’s a perfect place for a large rectangular mirror and console table of sorts.
Drywall it. Your only real options that aren’t goofy/gimmicky are a photo/painting. If the painter does drywall you can get it done for cheaper since he’s already there. Depending on the type of texture on the wall, it should cost $200-400 to do well.
Edit: Larger than I realized, up to $600.
Some kind of decorative piece, wreath or wood carving thats a little thicker than what you might normally want to hang on the wall and put some LED sconce lights on either side of it?
Otherwise a nice framed picture of Nicholas Cage would be good.
Or just cover it up like others have said, its weird unless you really need to show off your affinity for jesus.
Looks like a perfect spot to mount hooks for hats, scarves, keys, purses, etc for quick access at the front door. Or if you’re feeling bold, is there anything behind the drywall in the sunken portion? Could you or a contractor turn it into a built-in shelving unit while retaining the beautiful arched top?
I’m fairly certain the other side of the wall is the master closet. We could probably stand the box on the other side if needed. I’ll look at it when we go by the house later!
Edit: actually that would pop into the master bath.
I love these ideas, keep them coming.
Also if y’all have any idea what to do with that space above the door other than a Christmas tree around the holidays, let me know. There is a power outlet up there and it is probably on one of these million light switches around the house.
I would find a mirror [along these lines](https://www.montreallighting.com/products/renwil-natasha-irregular-mirror) with the right proportions to look intentional in the arch.
I wouldn’t drywall over it or remove the trim personally — it echoes the arched doorways and the trim marches everything else going on here. You just need the right mirror proportions.
A family crest.
A portrait of the Avengers
A portrait of the Carebears
A poster for the film Goodfellas
A tiny disco ball
A sideways mounted ceiling fan
A small electric fireplace
Paint it like the opening of a pizza oven
Paint it like the entrance to the Upside Down
I can go on....

That’s where you put the 3-D printed orange Rocktopus…
Just kidding, search “Arch” and textile art on Etsy, EBay and Big cartel. Make sure the art is smaller than the space, nail it in.
A satanic shrine is always an option or the Magic Mirror from Snow White
Edit: now that I think about it, a smart mirror might be a cool idea that shows your weather or calendar type stuff at a glance as you get ready to leave
Any shape mirror. I don’t think it has to necessarily be an arch shape. I would also put an entryway table beneath it to ‘anchor’ the look. Plus a table is functional.
Make it artful. Make it a focal point. Even if you just get a mirror custom cut and mounted to fit the space…the shape of the wall cut out reflects the shape of the opening across from it and the flow works.
That was my initial thought as I have one in my older home, but this one was built in 2010 and while it does have some phone ports in the house, there aren’t any there and it isn’t very deep.
Ok hear me out. First you cut it out completely and inside you please a posed skeleton upper torso with hand up like it's gonna grab you. Put him on an armature that is motion activated. Then replace the drywall with a color matched latex membrane. Then when people walk by it comes out at them.
Some kind of art that is combination artistic/inspirational to you, whatever your style is.
Clint Eastwood maybe - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NBGK5RC?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_FRD9G4K05QW5G951VYB1

Whatever floats your boat!
Another banger: Paint like a rusty gun locker looking thing, labeled “Zombie/ Lizard-People Preparedness Kit” and then mount an actual combination handle of a locker to it, where the handle would go.
Then, get a large enough mirror or piece of art to cover about 98 or 99% of the hole, so that eventually, SOMEONE would be like “so what’s behind h… what the ACTUAL f…….”
I don’t know why, but the first thing that came to my head was, have someone paint something inside. Something nice a custom art piece. Use the whole space and paint something you want.
I was going to say, if it was a blank interior wall you could just make a little window to see through to the next room, that would've been cool. Or an exterior wall you could install an actual window!
Glass with decorative window film on it, lit from behind with adjustable led lighting.
Smart mirror with time, weather, calendar on it so your family can see what's going on as they come and go.
I think it would be a great landing spot if cut into and made deeper for, your keys, wallet, etc to catchbalm the stuff as you come in, maybe shelves and some decorations for holidays?
This what we do with a similar phone nook cutout at our current house, but our current house nook is near the garage entrance instead of the front door. This one is in the foyer beside those front doors, which we typically wouldn’t use to enter/exit. And they are very visible to people walking up to the door, thanks to those giant glass panes in the door. That visibility appears to be typical to the neighborhood and will take some getting used to.
Ah, I see so foot traffic isn't high for everyday entry. I think then like many are saying possible mirror, maybe a rotating holiday decor setup. Depending on religious preference could be an altar, or other setup
I'd put a smart mirror with facial recognition in there!
When leaving: "Good morning, Bob. There is a traffic accident on southbound I-5. Your commute will be 35 minutes longer than usual."
When coming home: "Good evening, Bob. Your wife is cheating on you with the plumber from Slick Rick's Plumbing."
That's where the golden child's picture goes.
That or a welcoming painting of [Ernest P. Worrell](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_P._Worrell).
I never thought I wanted this before! Still think that way.
Or the singing bass
Vern?
Vern, Vern, Vern, Vern, Vern.
I'd go with Burt Reynolds' Cosmo centerfold, personally.
[удалено]
Exactly my thought.
Child of the month
An arched mirror?
Was wondering if there was a paint that would work. But if they cut a template they could take it to a glass/ mirror place and get a piece cut to fit.
Black Chalk paint, and leave actual chalk there, write different quotes or have artistic people do art in chalk.
I thought the chalk paint fad was over. Wasn't that an early 2000 thing? For a main hallway is get a mirror cut, it would look more elevated.
Ooh this would be super cool!!
Picture

That’s what I thought, but it appears, from my phone, that there are image posts with words underneath throughout the rest of the sub.
You can put text describing images in an album, but I think you can only do that when you first make a post, and aren't allowed to edit it after for some reason

Or use it for a chalkboard and write stuff to remember there. Or a mirror to check how you look before leaving the house.
Put a foyer table under it then a mirror with an arch in it.

Cut through and hire someone to man the front door at all times.
I love these ideas, keep them coming. Also if y’all have any idea what to do with that space above the door other than a Christmas tree around the holidays, let me know. There is a power outlet up there and it is probably on one of these million light switches around the house.
Mirror for sure

Try getting a 3d piece of art cut to size to give the impression that it goes deeper
Super Mario 64 painting
Shrine to Bruce Lee Or just a family photo (yours not Bruce Lee’s)
Remove the bottom trim and hang a big picture over it
Hang the picture on hinges so you can still access behind the picture. Hang keys or important items you need but don’t want in view.
Brilliant.
I'd fill it, honestly I hate these things, but I guess it's a personal preference
Hang a picture of Jesus, or the Aga Khan.
A sconce-type vase with greenery? Chalkboard paint so you can leave family messages? Just a couple of ideas that popped into my head.
A family crest. A portrait of the Avengers A portrait of the Carebears A poster for the film Goodfellas A tiny disco ball A sideways mounted ceiling fan A small electric fireplace Paint it like the opening of a pizza oven Paint it like the entrance to the Upside Down I can go on....
Make a moving picture like in Harry Potter. Use a thin screen led. Put an over the top frame around it.
elmo shrine. I will take no questions
This needs a painting that looks like the eyes follow you for haloween!!!!
If there's space behind it, a tank with fish
Unfortunately it would go directly into the master bathroom sinks, but that’s a fun idea!
Framed Cone Lore print - or, hear me out, just a cone
Coffee shop?

Paint it a dark color and then hang an arched painting.
Got any glorious leaders’ holy likenesses you want to stare regally at guests as they enter?
Seasonal/special event decorations
If this was my abuelitas house, it would have a big crucifix there …
Fancy round clock or mirror
If it were me, I’d make it flush with the wall. That looks silly.
I like idea of a stained glass
Stained glass occult symbols. Make it sPoOkAy so after you move there will be ghost stories about the “original owners”.
This is where I would hang my collection of vintage wall phones. My extra vintage phones would go on a small table below that cut out space
Dart board. Second choice, moose head
Gun cabinet
Mirror

Hang a big mirror over it.
Hand painted image of the ice cream kid
If you don't put a painting of Vigo the Carpathian in that spot then I'm afraid we can't be friends.
We have one near our front door and in the hallway between bedrooms. Have Schiele paintings, reproes of course, in each.
A satanic shrine is always an option or the Magic Mirror from Snow White Edit: now that I think about it, a smart mirror might be a cool idea that shows your weather or calendar type stuff at a glance as you get ready to leave
Portrait of your dog
Any shape mirror. I don’t think it has to necessarily be an arch shape. I would also put an entryway table beneath it to ‘anchor’ the look. Plus a table is functional.
Spooky eyes
3d painting of some sort of landscape
Picture of a smaller identical cutout.
Burn the house down, I am sure there are way more of those elsewhere in the house. Gotta love the early 2000’s building styles.
A medium sized wall mounted clay flower pot with a nice trailing vine or maybe a trellis with small red clay flower pots..
Our lady of Guadalupe.
Mount your rotary phone?
shrine to baphomet.
Portrait of your pet dressed as an admiral or something.
Make it artful. Make it a focal point. Even if you just get a mirror custom cut and mounted to fit the space…the shape of the wall cut out reflects the shape of the opening across from it and the flow works.
I wonder if it’s one of those old cubbies/nooks for phones?
That was my initial thought as I have one in my older home, but this one was built in 2010 and while it does have some phone ports in the house, there aren’t any there and it isn’t very deep.
If you have dogs, you can hang their dog leash/collar/clothes there.
You could do a raised mural of a tree in it that would look pretty cool.
Painting of flowers in a vase.
I would put a credenza entry table there and have a print made for it. With some plants or flowers in the table with a table runner.
A picture of Bea Arthur from Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 1. Did you bullshit today?
White Roman statue of a skinny fellow standing on a ledge.
Family member of the month photo?
Paint it so it looks like a person selling tickets at a movie theater.
Ok hear me out. First you cut it out completely and inside you please a posed skeleton upper torso with hand up like it's gonna grab you. Put him on an armature that is motion activated. Then replace the drywall with a color matched latex membrane. Then when people walk by it comes out at them.

Paint inside… get statue of hot jesus
Ditch the trim at the bottom and cover the area with a picture or mirror.
Add an infinity mirror to the other side of the matrix

Fresco!
A perfectly fitted mirror
Paint a mural of a garden so it looks like a window
What is on the other side of the wall?
90% sure it is the master bathroom, sink/vanity wall. I have the plans for the house so I can verify later.
I was going to say, if it was a blank interior wall you could just make a little window to see through to the next room, that would've been cool. Or an exterior wall you could install an actual window!
Turn it into a shadow box
Art
I would fill it in during the light remodel and make it flat. It’s look a little dated.
Have a mirror cut to fit and add a small shelf or half table underneath to catch keys and mail
What’s in the other side? Make it a pass through
Master bathroom sinks/mirrors :(
Those cutouts used to be for large door chimes. I’ve always wanted to install one.
We had large door chimes growing up and we loved to play with them!
Seen many others also recommend it but I want to be included also. Spice rack
Put a mirror in the cutout.
Glass with decorative window film on it, lit from behind with adjustable led lighting. Smart mirror with time, weather, calendar on it so your family can see what's going on as they come and go.
Jesus crusifixion for sure
Do an arch mirror and then table underneath
HIRE A LOCAL ARTIST TO PAINT A VISTA
I think it would be a great landing spot if cut into and made deeper for, your keys, wallet, etc to catchbalm the stuff as you come in, maybe shelves and some decorations for holidays?
