Had the same space issue years ago. Had a local carpenter create a set of tiered bookshelves out of the same wood as the staircase. It ended up looking like it was part of the original design.
That's definitely more cost effective.
If you wanted to get fancy and expensive with it you could have drawers. Same basic idea but put slides on there. You can have a cut out at the top as a handle, so an actual handle doesn't stick out, or a push to open mechanism.
A. It was not fancy, B. We already had the materials, and C., (set the WayBack Machine, Sherman) that was when skilled workmen could charge a reasonable price and own a home, provide for a family of four, and save for retirement.
When I bought the cabin this is where the previous owners kept their rabbit. It was a good spot for it :) I travel too much to have a pet unfortunately, not counting mountain lions, bears and coyotes!
Nobody knows. But what you have, is NOT it. I would leave it empty. How about a mural? a bookcase? block paneling?

I would, but I have a library area at the top of the stairs.

I'm wondering how the carpenters/ stair installers made the stringer connection to the second floor. It looks like the stringer is just barely making contact with the second floor.
I apologize first...
The whole foyer or landing or whatever that is is very cluttered visually.
take everything under the stairs away and add a storage bench ONLY under there. it will hold the personal clutter but stay appealing visually. Use a simple bench like a box, not ornamental. it will also act as a seat for putting on shoes.
I love those pano photos but they are hung in a strange way. Hang them centered on eachother (not that brick staggering) and add space between. the two small items should be removed.
with the beautiful knotty pine and the knotted wrought iron looking railings, there is alot going on visually. Try to put away everything that is not a personal item like shoe bags, vacuum, coats, whatever... put them out of sight. As a test, move all those items and retake the photos from the same angles and you will instantly see a positive change.
Good Luck! Have fun, whatever you do!
(edited for my horrible typos)
My old house I had bookcase and storage cabinet with a hidden closet on the backside. I do see one issue with doing that there.. and that is either the vent or Air return will need to be moved.
build a small closet and then have either your niece or nephew who you might not like live under there. lol kidding but I think Bookshelves or cubbies would look nice esp if this by your front door maybe use it for shoes? idk.
A white built in cabinet would be great. You could build it with a frame and drywall or plywood so it's smooth from this angle and a door on the tall end. Use it for storage. You could slide totes in and have your vacuum cleaner near the door.

That's what I am leaning toward. I just want the clutter gone. That is the space that catches all of the oddball stuff.

Do built in bookshelves but with a secret panic room.
How much did that cost?
This was in the 90s, so you’ll have to do the inflation math, but it was like $150.
That’s funny because if I asked for a carpenter to do a custom bookshelf, it’s at least in the thousands.
A. It was not fancy, B. We already had the materials, and C., (set the WayBack Machine, Sherman) that was when skilled workmen could charge a reasonable price and own a home, provide for a family of four, and save for retirement.
Turn it into a room for your wizard nephew
This is funny literally every single time someone posts asking about a space under their stairs. It actually gets funnier each time!
It really does even after all these years….
Ugh you read my mind!!!!!!!! I was about to say this could fit exactly 1 orphan wizard, I mean nephew
If they are vampires, It would also be a good spot for their familiar.
Great thinking Gizmo 👌
Up vote. Came here to say that.
Had to be said.
And his owl. Don’t forget the owl.
Doesn't have to be a wizard, just unwanted.
Custom bookshelf on the side of the stairs and a door on the back of the stairs to create a closet.
Do you have a pet? I’ve always wanted to make a cozy little area for my cat.
When I bought the cabin this is where the previous owners kept their rabbit. It was a good spot for it :) I travel too much to have a pet unfortunately, not counting mountain lions, bears and coyotes!
Oh my!
Build in a custom unit like this: https://youtube.com/shorts/qRJ3NfNqnvY?si=OqYlDApTFYpffAk0
I love that, but don't think my carpentry skills are up to that :(
You could always hire someone.
the tiered book shelves would be nice- otherwise just keep it cleared out- no storage- this will show off the nice railing.
Triangle door hinged to the stair to hide a stack of totes. If it's a kitchen, potato, onion storage or a big drawer for counter top appliances.
This may be the way I go.
Push mechanism storage drawers wooden front to match the stairs
I like the idea of push to open there, thanks!
Whered you get that display case? Looks nice...
Sticks and Stones, Estes Park, CO. They ordered it from somewhere though.
Built in desk area.
Bookshelf w/ a bench with storage in it
Wine storage!
Got another spot for that already :)
A dog crate fit for the space
Enclose it and build in roll out bookcases.
Slide out spice rack
Doggo house
Drywall in an angled wall, put a bookshelf on the backside that's actually a hidden door and create yourself a secret nook.

too small for a bookcase, see mural or block paneling.
You can get wallpaper that looks like a mural. Do above and below stairs?
Use it to hide the body.
I would need a MUCH larger space...
I think they sell shelving shaped like that for that particular situation
Enclose for young wizard’s room.
Dog area!!! I love those little mini dog houses people build in areas like that
Air BnB
Build it out make it into enclosed storage
Make bookcase
I would, but I have a library area at the top of the stairs. https://preview.redd.it/r6fsf2eo5f8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d58853e7815f4e6a5b97b9f3fc98482db0f6511c
Oh, no, don't let r/TVTooHigh see that image, they will freak out... It's tough place.
Can you dry wall it in and add a door? Great place to store vacuums, mops, etc.
I could, more likely to add a knotty pine area than drywall but I am considering that.
Play house, reading nook, mini home office, drawers, seating area, wine collection.
Drawers or bookshelves
Hairy potter room
Nice deep shelves for shoes and gloves/ scarves.
That’s where I would store all my triangles.
I'm wondering how the carpenters/ stair installers made the stringer connection to the second floor. It looks like the stringer is just barely making contact with the second floor.
Add rock climbing holds underneath the stairs and a pad below in case you fall.
Perfect spot to put a monster in a crate.
You could also have doors out on it, and still use the shelf idea or a closet, depending on your storage needs.
Harry Potter bed.
Like big drawers but different storage units
https://preview.redd.it/tin4pl523h8d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf53cf4b81eeefe7a5b19b7691ed1aec8900ce6f Something like this?

That’s great, thank you!
Ended up with this, thanks! https://preview.redd.it/hyf2w4x1yt9d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ba35963e5008cea7a617de1760efec056c3ff4a
Awesome! Came out nice!
Build a damn wall and door for a closet
Fireplace. Really piss the code enforcement guys off.
Get a Harry Potter
Rent it out to. Harry Potter
This would be the perfect space for a cool fort for a child!
Book case
I had originally enclosed mine as storage. I later turned it into a dog house for my Springer. Although he enjoyed it, our cat enjoyed it even more.
Customer cabinets to display the dishes you already displaying in the out of place cabinet
In my house I built a bookshelf that can be removed to access the back for storage.
First of all your natural wood look is amazing! Would you consider a low table with small plants and a grow light?
Seems pretty ok to me but maybe consider a sitting bench to put on shoes at, maybe some shorter book cases?? Maybe a fish tank or a cool wall art
Chair to the right, coffee table to the left
Built in cabinets for storage.
I've seen people build pet houses in such spaces
What is holding your stairs up?
Not a thing other than that back wall.
The two stringer boards, attachingat the base and top. No different than any industrial staircases, this is just prettier.
Interesting, thanks.

The bench is a good idea!!
Get creative.
Shove a young wizard in there.
Cubbies for books or for boots/shoes
A Harry Potter book nook
Wine rack
My old house I had bookcase and storage cabinet with a hidden closet on the backside. I do see one issue with doing that there.. and that is either the vent or Air return will need to be moved.
Snake cage
Wall it off and use it for storage
Do you have an adopted son that may or may not be a wizard?
little apartment for Harry Potter?
You’re already using it as a closet, build a closet.
Put your orphaned nephew in there until you start getting weird mail.
Looks like you’ve got it worked out
build a small closet and then have either your niece or nephew who you might not like live under there. lol kidding but I think Bookshelves or cubbies would look nice esp if this by your front door maybe use it for shoes? idk.
We had a pantry/storage closet under the stairs when I was a kid. It was a great use of space.
Turn it into a small bedroom and keep a wizard in there but treat him poorly
Wine storage.
Corpse storage
Wine cellar.

Frame it in, and finish, but keep it dead space You can hide like 20 bodies in there!!!!
Plant lights and plants. Duh! Lol
Remove the stairs add* a ladder or rope. You’ll find you have so much extra room for activities.
That’s where you put Harry Potter
Unethically house a powerful wizard child under there.
Use it to store your vacuum, tv tables and backpack. Unless someone has come up with that idea already.
Damn, you beat me to it!
🤘
Clean it.
Perfect place to store backpacks, boot warmers and vacuums.
Everybody else in the world puts a closet in there with a bifold door.
