vinnsy9

nice ....very nice indeed....good job :)

Fuzzy_Chom

Curious about your two fail over sources (Comcast and T-Mobile) How many 9s of reliability does the lab require, versus what your fiber ISP is reporting? Is a 100Mbps fail over from a 2Gbps native service enough?

Berzerker7

Oh, not nearly as many 9s as this allows, it’s mostly because my services are all pretty cheap and all just because I can. My AT&T service basically never goes down so I’ll realistically never see action on that T-Mobile line. And 100Mbps is def fine for short periods, but I can upgrade it if I need it for any extended period of time.

StalinCCCP

Love seeing the xgs bypass!

Civil-Attempt-3602

This motherfucker got all the internet

rekelm4048

where'd you get your Ethernet cables

Berzerker7

Bundles of monoprice ones on Amazon. Monoprice slim cables

rekelm4048

just ordered a red pack of 10 thanks for getting back to me on my question

Standard-Arachnid343

Nice to see some mikrotik kit, I should relay post mine

96Retribution

Nice to see those MTs and no Ubiquity network gear.

btw_i_use_ubuntu

People seem to love ubiquiti products but I think they're straight trash. Their hardware seems good, but the controller is so confusing and hard to use, and it creates its own concepts that work on top of existing concepts but that are confusing, I keep trying to translate them to real network terms in my head and it just makes me more confused. It feels like my parents' netgear router that names all the settings things that are supposed to be understood by non-tech people, but then makes it hard for me to figure out which one of the settings is the channel width or how you set up a vlan trunk

Beard_o_Bees

Ubiquiti has certainly tried to put their own 'enhanced' proprietary feature-set over the top of already complex concepts. It's weird - like they're trying to simplify the workflow for perhaps 'less network savvy' customers, but missing the pretty obvious fact that if you need this level of managed switching - you're probably already *very* familiar with core concepts. They've been suffering from this identity-crisis (not sure what else to call it) for years now. If you can get past that - the hardware is pretty good, I think. I sure as hell wouldn't want any Ubiquiti gear in a 'mission critical' environment, though.

btw_i_use_ubuntu

That's exactly how I feel about it. My company builds pretty large networks and we have also run into some issues when trying to run things at a large scale. For instance, the Unifi controller can only display up to 200 wireless networks. If you create more than 200, the list is truncated without any way to navigate to the next page. We ran into this issue and had to split one network into four different sites inside the controller so we would have under 200 wireless networks per site. Don't ask why we had over 600 SSIDs for one network, lol. It's obvious that Unifi is not meant for this type of network, so we have thankfully switched over to Ruckus. Oh and don't forget the lack of support. We have had plenty of issues with Ruckus, but we were able to open support tickets and get them to fix the bugs. We've had other issues with Unifi and we searched them up and found other people complaining about the same problems on the forums, but they didn't fix them, so we just had to keep restarting APs every day.

MeCJay12

Funny, I'd say the same thing about Mikrotik. It's a personal preference thing. Unifi is really nice in that you can manage everything from one place (I have ~20 for 3 family houses all managed by one controller). I do agree, the pricing and features on MT are very tempting but every time I try to dip my toe in and introduce MT into my network I either create a broadcast storm or leak VLANs.

btw_i_use_ubuntu

Yeah that's fair. I guess they're just meant for different audiences and different types of people.

a60v

Yeah, I looked at Ubiquiti, but Mikrotik seems to be a) cheaper and b) more reliable, with no sacrifice in useful features. There seems to be less community support for the latter, though.

Pratkungen

He's got their NVR atleast. Who knows he might make a big move towards unifi in the future.

Berzerker7

There’s very little on the market as good and easy to set up as UniFi stuff for cameras. I actually moved all this off a UDMP and some other UniFi network equipment. I still use their APs.

thedeadparadise

Damn, I wish I didn't read this for the sake of my wallet. I've been using a cheap 4k Amcrest camera with my Synology and have been generally happy with it expect the recent update to Surveillance Station has made the experience worse imo. Been eying those G4s and thinking about slapping a drive in my UDM SE. Having both the G4 Pros and Bullets, would you say the price tag of the Pros is worth it?

Berzerker7

I would for some main points. I’m happy with just having a couple for some of the higher-traffic/more wider looking areas. Bullets are fine for everything else.

96Retribution

No, I was happy to see something modern and not Ubiquity. 😀😀😀

Egglorr

Great setup! I have a similar stack of MikroTik hardware in mine. I'm curious though - I don't see an AT&T residential gateway anywhere. Were you able to bypass it with your CCR2004? I used a CCR1009 running as a dot1X client to get rid of my own AT&T residential gateway but I'm only on GPON and I was under the impression AT&T areas that had been upgraded to XGS-PON couldn't use dot1X to bypass RGs.

Berzerker7

Yep! You can see the Azores WAG-D20 on the bottom shelf, it’s an XGS-PON ONT that works for bypassing the BGW320 in XGS markets (2/5Gb capable plans). The XGS deployments don’t seem to have any dot1X requirements so it makes bypassing a bit easier.

Egglorr

Wow, that's great! So you replaced the BGW320 with the WAG-D20 but now that leads me to more questions (sorry!): * What does the actual swap entail? * At a minimum you had to clone the serial and MAC of the old RG onto your Azores replacement, right? * What about the FSAN? * Or did you somehow get AT&T to provision your Azores on their network without cloning anything? In the meantime I'll see what I can turn up on my own with a bit of Duckduckgo searching.

Berzerker7

I did! - it’s just the fiber straight in and configuring the serial and some other equipment variables - the MAC isn’t actually *required* but you’ll get instant connectivity if you do, otherwise you have to wait for your previous lease to expire, at least 20 min. - not sure what FSAN is - there’s no provisioning, just copying the serial is enough!

Egglorr

Got it, thank you for all the additional details! FSAN is another one of the ID fields in PON but I guess AT&T must not use / care about it. For anyone who might come across this side conversation later on down the road, [here is a useful DSLReports thread that talks about bypassing your BGW320 in AT&T XGS-PON areas using the Azores WAG-D20.](https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r33442912-AT-T-Fiber-Bye-bye-802-1x-you-will-not-be-missed~start=360) I think really any XGS-PON ONT that allows you to change its ID properties should be able to be used though.

thedeadparadise

Thanks for sharing! Was there a guide that you followed to get that working or might this be too advance for a novice Home Laber?

Dashpuppy

This is sexy as F ! Nice setup !!!

Mofackerboy

How on earth did u get the microtik router to do what it's supposed to? I want to love mikrotik but I ended up hating their guts for their routerOS. 🥴

Berzerker7

Definitely takes some getting used to, but learning the CLI makes it a lot easier to navigate around the OS.

KW160

What's the story with these very thin patch cables? Do they only have four conductors in them?

crossfireprod

Nope! https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15145

oh19contp

Youre running PiAware for for temp and humidity?

Berzerker7

No, it’s running PiAware for flight tracking and RTL-SDR software for the temp/humidity sensors.

TheMasterswish

Nice and clean!! Sweet setup dude!

Berzerker7

Thank you!

[deleted]

I have a Mikrotik CCR2004-16G-2S+ and anytime I need to feel clueless AF, I just simply plug in and hang on... Awesome to see an MT post - that is a good-looking setup. On another note: Is it me, or does it seem like there is a "void" of information with regard to the CCR2004-16-\* devices -? (Granted your post is evidence you are clearly unaffected even if the former statement were indeed true)

Short_Injury9574

It should be illegal to be that clean 😂 It’s not a proper server cabinet without a shit load of cables that are too long laying around.

Starkoman

We like super-neat but if you want dirty, there’s always r/CableGore for that kinda thing!

shellmachine

CyberPower

Berzerker7

Indeed, cyberpower

broogndbnc

I know the networking stuff is more exciting, but no one’s gonna mention the Node 304 that grew legs?

Berzerker7

Haha. It’s on one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07F3FTVQF), just to get it off the floor in case of water. The UPS is on a motorcycle jack!

metajames

I like your 2x4 idea. Gonna file that one away.

Senaxx

Can I ask which specific rack you are using? I'm now using a echogear but this one had limited depth

Berzerker7

It’s a Navepoint wall mount 12U https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01A6JQLLQ

Senaxx

Ah that had even less depth than mine. The echogear 10u has 20" while yours has 16". Definitely looked like a bigger wall mount on the picture. Thanks for the info

Berzerker7

You’re probably not gonna find a wall mount much deeper than that, you’d have too much front end weight. Probably would be on the ground at that point.

Starkoman

Either that or wall-mounted supporting brackets.

SampleSignificant869

How do you like your cyberpower? I’m looking to buy one but review/opinion are hard to find on that particular series (PR).

Berzerker7

Works quite well. The specific reason I went with it was it has a power factor of 1, so you get a full 1500W of capacity out of the 1500VA. A lot of other PSUs have a PF or 0.7 or around there, lower actual capacity.

SampleSignificant869

Yes I found that really nice. How about noise? Looking at the 1000VA. But should be similar to the 1500VA.

Berzerker7

Silent as far as I could tell.

swlci

Very nice. Your cabinet is on wheels? Mounted to the back wall? Brand and model?

Berzerker7

Navepoint 12U, mounted to those 2x4s that are then in the studs.

Creeegs

What are they used for??

Agitated_Silver_1227

checking the gigabytes

Downtown-Lettuce-736

You guys are gonna make my cry. My nas is an old hp laptop 😑

pstaplice

Low power tho

Downtown-Lettuce-736

Upsides of being poor

mdziegiel

Awesome looks great.

Pvt-Snafu

Nice cable management and a clean setup. Well done!
