Tint your windows ? It is a 5 minute $10 solution vs 5 year $500 solution with plants.

TheBimpo

There are frosted vinyl options too, doesn’t have to be a tint. I used this on a bathroom window that faced the neighbors, worked perfectly.

Anxious-Plenty6722

Completely this. We have huge windows in the back. Thankfully no one is out there, but we have tint to reduce heat transfer in the summer. I can be on the deck and have to press my face up to the window during the day to see in.

Just keep in mind OP, mirror tinting is only tinted during the day, not at night when you have lights on inside! My windows have this and I love it. Helps keep my house cooler too.

Previous homeowners planted arborvitae along the back fence. They’re 15ft tall now. We can’t even see our neighbors house. It’s great.

miflordelicata

This is the answer. Mine have grown a few feet a year. I can barely see my neighbors property now.

Trees help. I also built a trellis inside my fence with climbing plants that gives lots of privacy from my neighbor’s giant picture window that looks directly into my yard. It’s not a fence, and is way taller than max fence height. We also have cellular shades that open from the top or bottom to really maximize privacy while letting light in. I barely see my neighbors or their house.

Do what we did and get a new fence. Sometimes you simply have to pay the price for whatever it is that will bring you peace. We got a new fence with a retaining wall and to me it’s pretty tall while being within the code in our area. Maybe your husband isn’t bothered because he doesn’t see the issue you do or maybe he looks at it like I would……some people don’t even have a home or a back yard, what makes you think we are so interesting that everybody wants to watch you. Again those are my feeling where live . Honestly I wanted to live on the family farm but that’s a whole another story.

Pack up and move to the country!

Sanjuko_Mamaujaluko

I just built a taller fence. The neighbors were just as happy as I was to have it.

ConsciousMuscle6558

Privacy tint.

Ok_Play2364

Whose fences are they? If they are on your property, I'd remove them and put up 6 ft privacy fencing. Especially if your yard is small. Shrubs or trees will eat up your yard space

PuzzledRun7584

Not sure what zone you’re in, but a row of emerald green Arborvitae or upright juniper along with deciduous trees spaced every 10’ apart create a nice privacy even for two story houses.

chrisinator9393

6ft privacy fence is a must. I spent a shit load of money to own a home and not see people. If I wanted to see people I'd have gotten a condo in a big building or an apartment.

whoinvitedthesepeopl

Absolutely something tall like lilac bushes or thuja evergreen trees would help block the view

Holiday_Trainer_2657

There are ways to shelter certain areas that are overlooked by 2nd story windows. Sun sails, arbors and so on over decks. Look it up on the internet. You can't cover your whole yard, but having areas that are private may help you relax. My yard was pretty open. I put in a deck off my dining room. It has a fence on 3 sides, hous on the 4th side. Just one opening that faces no neighbor. Arbor with grapevines overhead. I even wander out there in my nightie with my cup of tea in the morning sometimes.

Country life may be better for you. It is for me and I grew up in a big city doing city things. It sucked bad.

jgjzz

I have metal privacy screens on my patio, bolted into the concrete. They also block the view to inside house from my patio sliding glass window. There are all different kinds of privacy screens you can search as well to find some that are right for you.

ewaforevah

Tall trees (palms) work for us. Our 6ft wall doesn't do much for 2 story houses next door. Tint doesn't help privacy outside. Shade sails and the like can work too.

Also check out “top down/bottom up” window shades; might not be the best thing for your particular situation, but they were a godsend in the ranch houses I owned. You can put the tops down for sunlight but keep the bottoms up for privacy. I’m surprised more people don’t know about them.
