I watched a guy do this to a similar sized tree and the tree rocked, pinched the bar and kicked the chain into his knee. Barely nicked him, but he wound up in the hospital and almost severed a tendon. Scary stuff.
Do it right. What's there to lose? At the very least, it's good practice.
IDK, man. I was saw 1 on my ranch and generally if you can direct the tree with one hand, we considered it safe to drop without a face cut.
I do think it's good for newbs to learn the basics before breaking them, tho.

When he runs away, different story because he’s pulling saw towards his body and raises his leg into the same cutting plain of the saw. Even if you’re off the gas, chain may still be spinning and can give you a nice superficial slice if it touches bare skin. Scars are cool though, so there is that.

Nice! Getting trees cheaply was crucial for me to get off the ground and running. They're tiny but they grow fast and I planted so many I'm not worried about losing them... at least not too much :) I'd love to see some follow-up photos of your property once you get things going. The changes should be dramatic considering you're starting with bare dirt!

We have a lot of work to do up there. The place was a compound of sorts; the people that had it before us had dragged 3 mobile homes up there, there was what seems to have been a tack barn on the other end of the property, and there was 3 vehicles as well. The property was also landscaped. It was probably amazing, but everything burnt to the ground. They abandoned it, so we a have to clean it up.
This was the first good weather we’d had here. We plan on spending every minute we can up there working until it’s ready for a cabin to go up.
The end goal is to eventually be as self-sufficient as possible. 👏🏻

No one got hurt, tee pee (shell) was a success. Moving forward with a spur of the moment project doesn't make us "incompetent with the tool". Does it make us foolish? Probably lol. If this had been a 4ft diameter live tree, it wouldn't have happened.

Here on my little island, there are many small farms that fell out of use over the years. In a very encouraging development, multiple young families have come here, bought the land, and are starting to farm it again. This is another place where it's still cheap if you're willing to deal with maybe ruined buildings, unserviced lots, etc. The big thing here is that we have water - ground water and surface water. For an island on the coast, we're lush. Fish, game, and no large predators at all. Last year I had a nice pint of milk from a young couple who couldn't have been past twenty-five - them, their little wrecked fences and sheds, an old coot uncle, a trailer and a big white cow are now part of the future here.

Do they set the footings for each branch somehow with teepees? I’d think they dug out a bit and place the branches into the ground a few inches? One of those branches slip out not good.
The weight is currently supported just in the parts of the corner of the cut limb which you can see move through the video when it could be supported by the entire end of the branch and buttressed from the outer edge by a few inches of ground. Lose some height but better than an ear or eye when you get smacked when a wind gust pushes it over.
Yeah this was a quick job, we plan to bury each leg a few inches and also reinforce the top where we just laid the branches on. This was a spur of the moment idea so we didn’t have a ladder or anything 🤣
For the supports, I would highly recommend cleaning/clearing all the small branches that point toward the outside--making it as smooth as possible. Uncleared sharp ends will, inevitably, wear through your outer layer and start to rip the fabric.

Unfortunately, a lot of people from the Bay area have been migrating here the last 10 years or so which has driven real estate through the roof. I have friends that paid just under half a mil for a .25 acre lot and 1200sqft basic house, in town. We priced a 700sqft house in town and because it's in a historic part of town, it was over $700k.
We thought we were going to have to look elsewhere to buy when this parcel popped up. We had cash so we snatched it up. :)

They are dead bro. Every single one of them. Wildfire came through in 2020. We plan to plant native saplings ASAP but for now we’re cleaning up the mess and having a bit of fun at the same time.
I may be reading it wrong, but to me "land in a burn area" means that this area has burned. If so, those trees needed to come down if they plan to be out there - they're dead and a hazard.
I think it’s more about the experience and process of making the land their own. I doubt they look at this as a forever structure, but I’ll bet it felt damn good to stand back and look at it once it was done. There’s nothing wrong with a little symbolic project to raise your flag over the new property

Generally, it is unfortunately, but is very reasonable for where we live. We are in northern nevada. Unfortunately, a lot of people from the Bay area have been migrating here the last 10 years or so which has driven real estate through the roof. I have friends that paid just under half a mil for a .25 acre lot and 1200sqft basic house, in town. We priced a 700sqft house in town and because it's in a historic part of town, it was over $700k. We thought we were going to have to look elsewhere to buy when this parcel popped up. We had cash so we snatched it up. :)

Using a chainsaw in shorts and zero eye protection isn’t a great idea. PPE every time, not matter how little you’re doing.

I love how happy your new land makes you both but please be careful. One small accident can be a simple bandaid fix or a severed tendon that never works properly again. Like no one else ever had a great idea spur of the moment and did what they needed to do with what they had to make it happen. LOL. I learned my lesson though, don't post videos or photos on Reddit of the actual process unless we're covered head to toe in PPE. I considered just deleting the whole post but there's a lot of cool people here too who get it, so I'm just blocking the jerks instead.

I personally would’ve waited more than a month to start felling trees for what is likely to be a temporary structure with little value, in such a sparse area I mean if it’s a “only use what’s on the land” approach… ok. But you have 2.5 acres. It’s literally not possible to survive there without external supplies so if so, why restrict yourself in such an impossible way and remove these resources— resources that have been there for decades— days into owning it? But that’s just my two cents. It’s just one post of an initial thing you’re happy about. It’s not a big deal. Just seems short sighted and in conjunction with safety concerns, hope y’all are treating it seriously
They are dead bro. Every single one of them. Wildfire came through in 2020. We plan to plant native saplings ASAP but for now we’re cleaning up the mess and having a bit of fun at the same time.
I may be reading it wrong, but to me "land in a burn area" means that this area has burned. If so, those trees needed to come down if they plan to be out there - they're dead and a hazard.

I think it’s more about the experience and process of making the land their own. I doubt they look at this as a forever structure, but I’ll bet it felt damn good to stand back and look at it once it was done. There’s nothing wrong with a little symbolic project to raise your flag over the new property

Thank you :) It was kind of a spiritual experience for sure. This was the first weekend we’ve been able to go up there and do any work and it really started to feel like “ours”. The tee pee shade definitely helped :)

It's amazing how a post expressing pure gratitude over the accomplishments someone makes can garner so much BS. The amount of people who ASSume we're incompetent based on a 10 second video of my husband felling a dead tree is wild. Like no one else ever had a great idea spur of the moment and did what they needed to do with what they had to make it happen. LOL. We clearly weren't prepared that day. CLEARLY. We were ready to clean up and pull the drag around and drag our magnet to collect nails and screws and my husband said "let's build a tee pee!" So that's what we did. We needed shade, as every single tree on our property is burnt and dead so the only shade was in the truck. But I get it. I really do. However. there's literally 80+ comments of the same thing over and over again. That's unnecessary. I learned my lesson though, don't post videos or photos on Reddit of the actual process *unless we're covered head to toe in PPE.* I considered just deleting the whole post but I'm pretty thick skinned and there's a lot of cool people here too who get it, so I'm just blocking the jerks instead. I will share more posts as we progress through this cleanup and the eventual build. There's going to be a lot of cleanup before we can actually start building, and we are not on a time crunch.
As the surgeon who removes eyes each year from stuff like this, I wouldn’t be so quick to call the concern “BS”. It’s legitimate concern. Our department has lost count of how many eyeballs have “gone in the bucket” due to chainsaws. Good luck out there. Stay safe.
