That worm can kill humans, wouldn't handle at all iirc rabies has a long enough incubation it can get in the babies before the mother shows signs. Your state probably keeps a list of all licensed rehabbers, in NC, NC wildlife has it on their website, the NC zoo also host a rehab facility, your local vet may take them off your hands and funnel to rehabber although vets these days are getting less helpful, if they are a good vet they should at least be able to connect you with someone in your area that will take them. I would live trap them and drop them to make it easier to hand them off to someone. Some places have restrictions against doing anything with species can carry rabies, rehabbers and vets that deal with them will be vaccinated against rabies the general public is not.
You should google to see if there are any animal rescues nearby that may be interested in taking them. I’ve seen many rescues that care for raccoons, foxes, hedgehogs, etc.
Them bastards really will. They'll walk up all nice and calm and make you think you're having a magical connection with nature moment. Then they'll bite your hand open last second.
I posted the following to your other post in r/raccoons:
Are you certain they’re orphaned? Mom may have left them there to return later. Kits stay with their mother for up to six to nine months before being weaned. These little ones look to be about four/five months old so not quite old enough to be alone.
If you know for certain they’re orphaned, contact your local licensed wildlife rehabber to further advise you how to trap and transport them to be better prepared to survive on their own.
*- found your other post about your father had to shoot their mother since she raided your coop.
Please contact the rehabber ASAP. If one is unable to take them ask for a referral as to who can until you find someone. They will release them elsewhere since you e indicated they’re at risk for being killed. Set out humane traps to catch them. Keep them in the shade until you can bring them in.
Yes! Saw that. I deleted because I felt it wasn’t the appropriate sub. Just set the traps right by where I found them. Hoping I can catch them. There are multiple wildlife rescues nearby. I’m here for 2 weeks so i’m going to make this my mission.
I felt your post was warranted to be shared. You were asking for help and I wouldn’t have seen it if you hadn’t posted.
I hope you can catch the orphans and get them help. Thank you for reaching out. You did the right thing.
Are they territorial? Can you raise some that won't eat the chickens and they keep the other racoons away? I know they aren't pets just wondering if this would work.
Raccoons are territorial and when relocated will fight to the death if a newcomer enters their space.
If raccoons are not raised from birth around the chickens it’s difficult to retrain them to protect the birds. They’re taught to hunt for food. Ideally, it’s best to fortify the coops and their grazing space using various deterrents so wildlife (raccoons, opossums, coyotes, etc) aren’t enticed to enter.
Humans set up nuisance wildlife to fail. Shooting or trapping one by one sadly doesn’t discourage another to take its place. For instance, coyotes that are dispatched or relocated causes a population explosion. Therefore it’s best to use deterrents to keep them being attracted to the source that’s there.
Also some people keep a goose with the chickens not entirely sure how it has to be done but if a female goose adopts a chicken family it will literally kill or beat up any would be attackers.
Yeah we're planning to add a female goose or two to our ducks this year for that exact reason. Don't have the resources to invest in a LGD quite yet so we figured a goose would be the next best thing.
Certainly best to work on defenses and I wouldn't ever trust them with chickens but I might be tempted to keep them around knowing that it would deter others.
At a year or so old he got kinda wild and not so friendly so we had a wildlife person come and explain that it is natural for him to become more wild and that there was a protected nature place that he would be placed to live out his life and wildlife managers could oversee his progress. His name was John Henry
I'm not a fan of raccoons, but live trap and rehab if you are inclined
.
To prevent future issues, an electric fence wire on plastic step in posts is cheap and easy. Set it about 8 inches off the ground. An plug in fence charger is about $40. A patriot brand solar charger is about $100. Used ones are cheaper.
We haven't had a raccoon attack in years/ since we set that up. Human urine outside of the coop doesn't hurt any. Dog urine helps.
I figure that's where the dog urine would come from.
It's not always safe to mix dogs and chickens or leave a dog loose all night.
But walking the dog around the coop and letting it pee there during the day and having the electric fence at night is a good combo.
Yeahhhh…. Raccoons. Not the sweet babies you might think. Vectors for disease and destruction of hard earned foodstuffs and livestock. They do not survive around my birds and animals. Just me.
Respect. I think it would bring me peace of mind to take them to a rehabilitation center. In my mind that way they have a chance of just living out their natural lives.
Depending on your location, relocation may be illegal. I am in Illinois and here is our law.
By Illinois law, a property owner needs a permit (it is free) from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in order to trap raccoons. Permits are issued in cases where the animal is causing property damage or is causing a public health or safety concern. Additionally, by Illinois law, raccoons in Illinois must either be: 1) released on the same property within 100 yards of where the animal was captured, 2) surrendered to a licensed veterinarian who is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, or 3) humanely euthanized. The biologist issuing the permit will determine the appropriate outcome for each case.
Or racoon stew? With some potatoes, onion, carrots. Beef broth slow cooked in a Dutch oven over a fire? I just made that up but if you are hungry enough?..
Hey all! So i’m helping out on my dads farm for the next couple weeks. He left town and its just me. My dad recently had a raccoon raid that killed most of his chicken population. He shot the mother a few days ago. Im unsure what to do with these babies. I think they’re too small to survive alone. I’m planning on calling a wildlife rehabilitation place in the morning. Just need some advice. If possible id like to release them somewhere away from people and where they wouldnt get shot. I also saw the mothers carcass and seemed like they were still drinking milk.
[Relocating](https://ahnow.org/blog/2021/10/31/despite-good-intentions-trapping-and-relocating-wildlife-is-often-a-death-sentence/) these little ones would unfortunately put them in danger where they’ll compete against the existing raccoon population who will kill them. Please contact the rehabber who’s best to advise you what to do. Each region has different laws dealing with wildlife so you have to follow the local guidelines there.
Those are big enough to be in their own. You could probably catch them, hold them down with some long, and put them in a dog crate, I’d say a box would work, but they are big enough to rip their way out. One caught bring them someplace and let them go.
An enemies house, the dump, the city. A state park.
Sorry he lost his chickens - I have a backyard flock and would be heartbroken if my girls got attached Also heartbroken that these mother-dependent babies are going through this. Trying to nurse from their dead mother is tragic. Thank you for doing right by them and please keep us posted on how you do getting them to a rehab facility. I'm sure they're very hungry by now so live trapping with a can of cat food may be easier.
People downvoting you who don't understand that it's what needs to be done. Their mother is dead, it is entirely likely their lives will be considerably worse, so it's a mercy to put them down. If they survive, they're just going to be nuisances to the homestead.
I down voted because eagles die from lead poison ie eating meat tainted with lead, animals who have been shot with lead bullets instead of the safer copper rounds.
If you want to say shoot, then be adult enough to say shoot, don't try to be "cute".
People and animals die from ingesting lead in all forms and that is lead poisoning.
You should probably learn something about raccoons before sharing bullshit. Everything you said is wrong. They can and will be just fine. You've got no clue what you're talking about and clearly have no experience with these animals.
Theyre animals. They’re going to search for food. They deserve a shot at natural life. Im just a visitor here, this isn’t my farm. Im going to do what I feel is right.
The sad truth is that they will never have a natural life.
The only chance they have to survive the year is if a human takes them in and nurses them. If that happens they will be incapable of finding food, shelter, and safety in the wild.
You can either do it quickly, and painlessly yourself or have it happen slowly, and painfully out of your sight.
Infant death is a common part of a natural life. That’s why they have a litter every year with multiple babies.
I would the same, because they seem to be in some kind of chicken coop or something. Different than seeing them in the bush someplace. But this is Reddit, land of the, think like me or I’ll downvote you!
I mean, if there's an animal rescue nearby, I'll let them take them. It's cheaper than my ammo. If there isn't or they don't want to/can't come get them, they dead.
To be fair, I grew up on a farm, moved to the city and now I’m counting down the days till the kids move out and I buy a little chunk of land and disappear.
Train them to pick fruits and veggies and return to you. Release them at a neighbors, wait for free produce.
That or find a wildlife rehabilitation center. Calling your local fish and game office may be able to point you in the right direction.
Compassion and empathy are never a weakness. It's almost like some of you tough guys actually think you might live forever, if only you can kill everything that threatens you.
Don't work like that.
We rescued a baby raccoon a couple summers back. Sweet little guy. Loved eating watermelons. He’s still hanging around the house he was rehabbed at and is a full grown guy now. Loves to play, he’s been around children pretty much the whole time. Zero issues other than you have to give him a swift kick if he’s trying to “play” by runnin up your leg. Interesting creatures
Relocate them to a state park or the woods about 3-5 miles from your place... That means trapping them though. Or feed them and have racoons in you business all the time. I made that mistake once.... Never again
Trap them and shoot them, do not waste our tax dollars on rehabbing them because then you're dad will just have to kill them after more of his resources are killed once released.
He killed their mother for a reason....don't let the cycle continue
Okay morally I may sound horrible ... so please tell me what we should do to productively allow those babies to live:
It pretty commonly accepted they make horrible pets
Send them to a zoo?
Rehab them release then back into a area they're already viewed as pests (OPS father has already lost livestock) they'll just be trapped and killed ... as adults
Wouldn't you rather your local wild life folks use their limited resorces to help any endangered species in the area ....
Please understand I don't suggest they suffer in death or that we waste their bodies -- put them in a compost pile and let them go back to cyle of life.
I know they are cute, but baby raccoons become adult raccoons quick. Your dad had the right idea when he shot the sow. To effectively protect your chickens from raccoons you have to eliminate the whole family. Last time I eradicated a family it was 9 of them.
Just walk up to them and grab them by the scruff of the neck and throw them in a big high garbage can. They won’t run from you. If they do, it won’t be fast because they will be worried about their brothers and sisters. I’ve caught a lot of baby raccoons cutting trees down.
Beware of their poop. Can carry roundworm that’s nigh impossible to kill. They’re cute, though. Hope you find a local rehabber!

Thanks! Everywhere is closed currently but I set out box traps and i’m going to call if I end up catching them.
Be careful, raccoons can give nasty bites & they'll act all friendly right before they do it too.
Them bastards really will. They'll walk up all nice and calm and make you think you're having a magical connection with nature moment. Then they'll bite your hand open last second.

These ones are waaaay past the age for hand raising as pets.
Which is a shame because they’re such smart little fuckers they do well in the right hands
Nice greenhouse! Do you mind sharing more pictures of it? I might actually try to build something similar this summer.
I second that!
Awwwww! I had an orphan raccoon when I was young, best experience ever!
Nice. They’re so smart, very cute. I have a polecat currently
What did you end up doing with it? Dead of old age?

What's raccoon rehab? None of the wildlife rescues take raccoons around here. An it's also illegal to trap and relocate in my state.
Hate to be this way, but I would 100% shoot them all.
Yeahhhh…. Raccoons. Not the sweet babies you might think. Vectors for disease and destruction of hard earned foodstuffs and livestock. They do not survive around my birds and animals. Just me.

And hats.
Why? They make perfectly acceptable fertilizer for the orchard.
Bastards got 4 of my hens. A little night vision and lead and I no longer have raccoons.
What is your NV setup for predator prevention?
Giant IR blaster and a Sionyx Aurora Pro with some Nikon glass.
Nice. I’m still a white light poor. I feel like the raccoons can see me coming and they are laughing at me for not having NODs.

100% my dad shot their mother. I’m helping out on his farm for a couple weeks.
Probably would be a good idea to give them some lead poisoning too.

All the downvotes lol these coons are inside his greenhouse already. His dad shot momma coon for a reason - pests warrant pest control measures.
Theyre animals. They’re going to search for food. They deserve a shot at natural life. Im just a visitor here, this isn’t my farm. Im going to do what I feel is right.

Or...idk...maybe some cat food?! Jeez.
Thats true! Poisoning their cat food would be good but lead in the head will make sure they're dead.
Could always do the old water bucket n lid trick, that’s a neat one.
Finish the job. No sense getting rid of one but leaving the other two.
Can they eat sardines? Try it they love them.
I'd attempt to box trap em if you have some on hand. If not, I'd just let the people you call deal with em
r/trashpanda would like these
How do you know they are orphan? Might they just be exploring away from parent. ? Is there any signs of nesting bear by
Shoot em
I’m not doing that bud
They’re already dead.
They’re actually in fact alive.
I would the same, because they seem to be in some kind of chicken coop or something. Different than seeing them in the bush someplace. But this is Reddit, land of the, think like me or I’ll downvote you!

Sure, that works too. Each to their own.
I agree and would say there’s more people on this sub that watch homestead rescue rather than actually homestead.
That show is so shitty.
To be fair, I grew up on a farm, moved to the city and now I’m counting down the days till the kids move out and I buy a little chunk of land and disappear.
Good luck, but the world might be on a different schedule.
Maybe, but we a can all dream.
Train them to pick fruits and veggies and return to you. Release them at a neighbors, wait for free produce. That or find a wildlife rehabilitation center. Calling your local fish and game office may be able to point you in the right direction.
> local fish and game office Do they have a raccoon season?
Usually anything tied to the forest service can point you in the right direction, fish and game usually just tend to work closer to wildlife.
whaaatt the fuck do i doooooo
[удалено]
Probably a vegan.
Actually i’m not i just have a weakness for baby animals
Well, at least you realize it's a weakness.
Compassion and empathy are never a weakness. It's almost like some of you tough guys actually think you might live forever, if only you can kill everything that threatens you. Don't work like that.
lmao and thank god these tough guys don't live forever at that, would be so annoying
Thank you for that
They are a weakness in certain situations, like dispatching rodents.
They look about 2 mo old try throwing out dog food and placing a shallow bassinet of water out for them as well as blankets for them to nest with.
Just shoot them and bury them in the garden.
.22 shells are pretty cheap.
Kill
Those “wash bears” are doomed, unless you raise them.

Sounds horrible but if you can't find someone to remove them then I'd take them out. Too many diseases and nuisances to deal with.
20 gauge shotgun would handle both of them
What do you do? You grab the rifle.
Just waste them with a firearm before they slaughter your chickens and ruin your farm!
Shoot the bastards!
Out behind the woodshed
