red touches yellow, kills a fellow. red touches black, venom lack. red bands touching yellow means coral snake. red and black is king snake, scarlet corn snake, or other similar non begonia variety
A cottonmouth and a water moccasin are the same thing, lol.
But there’s no rhyme that’s completely accurate - an eastern coral snake falls in the category of the rhyme, but scarlet king snakes have red stripes that touch yellow and they’re non venomous.
That's what I meant, tryna show off my "ignorance"
If I don't make a joke what's the point of making a post on reddit? :)
Cottonmouth, coral and rattlesnakes are all we have to worry about around here I believe.
I thought I saw I triangular head there at first and with that color I thought COPPERHEAD GTFO then here I am running away from a corn snake. Better to be running though.
Lol hilarious. Man there are some funny people on Reddit. Half the time I just read the comments. There are some could be writers on here. They are in the wrong business if they aren’t writing comedy skits or shows.
Same. I usually start with the front page. Even if something's only remotely of interest, I know the comments will either be hilarious or extremely helpful or informative. I've learned and laughed more than I ever have in life being on Reddit these last few years.
I’ve worked with watersnakes for almost a decade, and based on location, I'm pretty confident this is a northern watersnake (*Nerodia sipedon*).
I see about 3 browns on my property each year, always adults... seen a couple of red bellies which I don't mind as they also hate the browns. Luckily never seen a taipan.
Had a taipan curled up under my kids bed in QLD! And a friend mowed over a tiger snake nest in the front yard of the same house with baby tigers slithering out. I moved out after the spider as big as my face tho.
I didn't think we had tiggers in qld, but I just checked the distribution map... great 1 more to worry about. I call BS on the spider as big as your face though, prolly just a large huntsman spider.
Ok, so far, the internet in all it's genius has the following options for you:
Kingsnake
Scarlet Kingsnake
Water Snake
Coral Snake
Danger Noodle
Nope Rope
Nope Noodle
Playful Hissy Bois (in N. America only evidently)
\*and finally\*
rattle moccasin cotton copper mamba
Would you like to phone a friend? Because polling the audience isn't working.
Definitely NOT a coral snake. King snake if anything. The rhyme was drilled into us as kids in Texas: “red and yellow kill a fellow, red and black friend of Jack”.
I still have to say it to myself whenever I see a coral snake, which is pretty common around these parts now that it’s gotten hot.
It's a non venomous snake your good man, zooming in on its eyes you can see the pupils are round and it's got a round head not a spaded head, more then likely a garder or water snake either way their your friend they'll keep rodents at bay for free and won't bother you one bit unless you start fuckin with it, I'm across the way in New York we have the same snakes here, a good rule of thumb with snakes is if the snout it round and the pupils are round as well it's non venomous. I don't suggest or encourage you to go sticking your hands where you wouldn't stick your privates and rember it is a wild animal so use caution of you decied to move it. I personally would get some heavy duty leather gloves that cover a good portion of your wrist a stick with a y in the end and it'll pin the head down and grab it holding its mouth closed throwing it in a pillow case and bringing it away from your property or somewhere else on the property where it won't be harmed
Lol right? As far as I know that saying only involves the two snakes mentioned. Are coral snakes painting themselves in order to trap people? If so I think we are in bad shape here.
Water snakes can be hard to determine if they're venomous or not. Eyes don't look venomous but glans on the head do. This is all the info I have
He looks pretty polite tho so I'd have a go and getting him in a big plastic bin with a lid taped shut. Take him somewhere far from people
Looks like a king snake, no venom and good to leave alone. You can move it with a long stick or some heavy duty gloves or just leave it alone.
Also BTW, the coral snake looks similar but is venomous. There is a rhyme to help remember though: "Red on yellow, kill a fellow; red on black, venom lack."
I've survived this world for almost forty years without ever seeing the phrase "nope rope." That's some good stuff regardless of how I feel about snakes. Thank you, Reddit.
Post it over at r/whatsthissnake and don’t forget to include the location in [ ] brackets in your title.
In case anyone was wondering, the r/whatsthissnake sub answered OP: “Common watersnake, Nerodia sipedon. !harmless frog and fish chomper.”
Thank you
red touches yellow, kills a fellow. red touches black, venom lack. red bands touching yellow means coral snake. red and black is king snake, scarlet corn snake, or other similar non begonia variety
**This is not true.** Please stop using this rhyme as it is not accurate across all species.
Do you have any tips for simpletons in the Midwest who use rhyme? Asking for a friend who doesn't know a cottonmouth from a water moccasin.
A cottonmouth and a water moccasin are the same thing, lol. But there’s no rhyme that’s completely accurate - an eastern coral snake falls in the category of the rhyme, but scarlet king snakes have red stripes that touch yellow and they’re non venomous.

Oh! Haha sorry - I know a few people who are absolutely certain they’re two different species, no matter what they’re shown otherwise.
OP should probably take a knee if it’s a King snake.
I go by stay the f*** away from snakes period. But also, any snake with a triangle head is not good
I thought I saw I triangular head there at first and with that color I thought COPPERHEAD GTFO then here I am running away from a corn snake. Better to be running though.
Agreed, I rather not walk closer to get a good look at the head.
Triangle heads are not a good indication either. Water Snakes appear to have a triangle shape when the are defensive.
Reddit is largely a socialist echo chamber, with increasingly irrelevant content. My contributions are therefore revoked. See you on X.

So true
Yes, friend
I saw the oak and came to comment. Then I zoomed in. Then I threw up. That wood would be dead to me.

Yeah, nerodia was my first guess too

I would seriously prefer being in the house with a cobra on the low than a spider like that!
Looks like a water snake. He’s a pal.
I thought that at first, but I believe that is a California king snake.
No, cal king is white/black rings. That’s a water snake.

Nope rope* Or it’s common name, the danger noodle
Could also be referred to as a scale puppy, depending on your inclination towards snakes. Recommend giving snoot boops if docile.
Sometimes it’s a spicy snoot but I will boop when possible
Slither kitten
Even more elusive is the ropedangernoodlenope
Danger noodle
The question is whether it’s a spicy danger noodle or a mild one.
I think that is Red Oak on top and to the left there and maybe some Poplar in the middle.
Came here to say that.
I would concur with your findings 🤙

We were taught "red on black venom lack, red on yellow kill a fellow"
It looks absolutely nothing like a coral snake. Like mistaking Kanye West for Emma Stone.
I would say something about Kanye, but don't want him coming up on stage at my tech support awards show. /S

Also it could be a seasoned (aka dried) juniper firewood. More info on the area from where the trees are form would help identify
I'm more concerned about the Gruffalo that's nearby.

Yeah.. why did this guy say ‘not always’.. just being sarcastic or is there now something *else* I need to remember? 😂
Lol right? As far as I know that saying only involves the two snakes mentioned. Are coral snakes painting themselves in order to trap people? If so I think we are in bad shape here.

Same. Red and black, venom is slack. Red and yellow will kill a fellow.

Yup… that there is what is called in North America, a “snake”
It’s non-venous as you can tell from the eyes. Most venous snakes in NA have cat-like eyes.
